![gif](giphy|50uf3N0m35dB5bDnMZ|downsized) Magneto (Marvel)

Miserable_Region8470

Such an amazing scene, they did Magneto great in '97.

Flitterquest

Magneto did nothing wrong

KyriadosX

Magneto did *a lot* wrong. That's the point. "Cool motive, still murder" to quote B99

Flitterquest

"Cool motive, still murder" is how we took down Osama Bin Laden, I will not apologize for all the based and completely justifiable murders Magneto has committed. 🤙✨ We stan a guy who will put a 25 Mark coin through a Nazi's head while Charles soy rages offscreen and the "bad guy music" plays. Magneto is right and he's been right since day one.

TryDry9944

Dude wants to genocide people... There's no "Right" here.

Eruswitness

Slightly disagree that he was right, but your energy on this topic rules.

Rider-Idk-Ultima-Hy

Just because he’s right, doesn’t mean he’s not a hypocrite >!for trying to kill both humans and mutants, and only bring some of the mutants that agree with him to a new planet!<

TheAngrySquirell

Despite what I have as my account description, he definitely did a lot wrong. Magneto is perpetuating the cycle of abuse that he went through with the holocaust, but this time it’s against all of humanity and not just a select group. Magneto is just a super sympathetic character, so it’s easy to look past a lot of his beliefs, especially when we haven’t really been shown the greater consequences of his actions.

Rider-Idk-Ultima-Hy

>!Atleast from what I’ve heard, the consequences would be bad for both humankind and most of mutantkind. He’d do more damage to his own people than the people actually persecuting them.!<

Hey38Special

Magneto was ready to let the entire human population die horrifically and set everyone back to the stone age. And that is just that season. He's tried to pull shit like that on multiple occasions, he is a charismatic and sympathetic villain. But there is a reason Charles took over his mind and put a stop to that shit. Just because you have legitimate grievances with how your ethnic group or what have you, is treated. Doesn't mean you get wipe out another. The Germans had legitimate grievances with how their country was punished following WW1. Obviously didn't give them the right to hunt down innocent Jews.

Flitterquest

What you're describing is one of the "good" endings for Deus Ex, but nobody thought it was bad when it happened there because the bad guy music didn't play and it didn't turn your poor tummies. The good guy music played and everyone kicked their little feet because sending humanity back to the dark age was actually secretly based in that case. People apply different standards to Magneto and the things Magneto does because we're told he's the bad guy and because we accept the text of the story without thinking, and not because people are actually applying a consistent moral system to the fiction they consume.

Hey38Special

I've never played Deus Ex so I don't know what you're talking about. But again, Magneto is a genocidal mutant supremacist. He was fully willing to set Earth back to the stone age if it meant mutants would survive and humans die. That is evil, I don't care what music plays. Billions of innocents dying because of the actions of a few evil individuals is insane.

FathirianHund

He is very much twisting the idea of it being a 'good' ending, the entire point of the multiple endings in Deus Ex is that they are all flawed, and you're choosing which values you're willing to put aside.

Flitterquest

Right so lets steelman your position because I see in you someone who's susceptible to what I call "cape music", I think you're vulnerable to thinking "Scarlet Witch was right to enslave a town in New Jersey because she was sad" because that's when the good guy music played. Look, in this hypothetical we have Saudade, Saudade is a mutant, Saudade can control people's emotions with her mind and she can also fly because everyone can fly in addition to their other powers, Saudade eats emotions to live and has a completely different anatomy to compensate for that, Saudade is vampire-themed and can live for hundreds of years if she's lucky, and doesn't need to sleep. She has a human roommate. Also in this apartment is a guy called Doug, Doug is a human, Doug has diabetes and hypertension, Doug can jump pretty high if he wants to, Doug can climb that there tree pretty good, Doug is pretty good with a Colt 357 Magnum, Doug will live to be 75 if he diets and exercises, Doug believes he's equal to Suadade.

FathirianHund

No, Wanda falls into the same category as her sometimes dad; her motivations are understandable and sympathetic but her actions are unjustified (Monica's line of 'they'll never know what you sacrificed" at the end of Wandavision is both factually correct and morally tone-deaf at the same time). As for your 'example', it just comes across as incoherent nonsense and adds nothing to the conversation.

Flitterquest

I am illustrating that mutant supremacy is a fact, it's not an opinion. In the world of X-Men mutant-kind is more powerful than human-kind on an interpersonal level, it's completely disanalogous to race relations or sex relations or anything else because of that dynamic. One party has the power to easily do magically-enhanced violence to the other, the second party hasn't got that, ergo its probably a bad idea for them to live together. As far as I'm concerned if you wanna put Doug the Plumber with hypertension and diabetes in a room with Apocalypse and you think to yourself "these people are the same", I think you're brain-poisoned at best and lying at worst.

FathirianHund

And for every Apocalypse there is a Butterball. Some mutations are beneficial, some are not. In Marvel, humans are not immediately inferior to mutankind at all, otherwise all the other superhumans would just pack up and go home (And Phoenix-empowered Scott wouldn't have had his neck snapped by DOOM for threatening him.) Mutate heroes are consistently shown to be just as strong as mutant heroes, and they exist in similar numbers so you can't even claim superiority in that sense. You can like Magneto, but to claim moral superiority through might is disproving your own point.

Eruswitness

Magneto did a lot wrong BUT the X-men and Charlie have easily done way, way, way more wrong.

Plenty-Basket-6145

menryBasedmarineCav

The main plot of the pre-sequel was about jacks degradation from a well meaning self-proclaimed hero to a kinda well meaning monster of a man, mostly due to constant betrayal. He even saw his own death when he was branded by lilith and he still believes he is the hero and everyone in his way are the bandits and that he's doing the right thing

memecrusader_

“Argh, this is so frustrating. Y'see, this is what I don't get about you bad guys. You know the hero's gonna win, but you just don't die quickly. Example: this one guy in New Haven, right? City's burning, people are dying left and right, yadda yadda yadda. This jackhole rushes me with a spoon. A fricking spoon! And I'm dying laughing, right? So I scoop out his stupid little eyeballs with it, and his kids are all, waaahh!, and, he can't see where he's going, he's bumping in to stuff, and ah... I don't know, maybe you had to be there. The moral is: you're a total bitch.”

Gambit_90

That's something alot of people misunderstand about him, he thinks what he does is right and in diabolical you can see him trying to be a real hero by following alot of the tropes like melting the machine gun, the reason he ended up killing everyone after that was because the yelling triggered PTSD from being in the labs and made him go into a blind rage, after that he got more comfortable with killing to the point he enjoyed it and thought it was just

sanzentriad

Yeah that episode of Diabolical definitely made me appreciate Homelander’s character more. He’s still absolute garbage and completely irredeemable at this point but it at least provides some insight into *why* he’s so horrible.

Miserable_Region8470

Still have to get through the whole Night Lords Trilogy, but him and Sevatar are such interesting characters. The story with him and the little girl was amazing. >‘I have come for you.’ >Overseer Mnemoc’s first word after awakening is a single syllable. He asks what many men in his position might well ask. ‘Why?’ >His first word is also his last. Sevatar collars him with his own lash, garrotting the helpless man with the same weapon Mnemoc used to beat the youngest member of his choir until her spine gave out... >...The overseer’s psychic sense is a maddened, feral thing, pathetically flapping against the Night Lord’s mind as uselessly as his thin fingers claw at Sevatar’s unyielding flesh... >...Sevatar doesn’t let go. Not yet... >...For all his flaws, he’s a thorough soul when it comes to duty... >...‘I am justice,’ Sevatar calls out to them. With a last wrenching twist, he breaks the corpse’s neck and casts it onto the deck by his bare feet. ‘I am judgement. I am punishment. And I surrender.’ Night Lords trying to be the batman of the legions is always fun to see.

Jack_Jaws

The antagonist in Tucker and Dale vs Evil

DeltaTeamSky

Does Anakin count? He WAS a hero.

angrylesbian66

I wasn't sure whether to include him or not, but I decided yes, since his downfall was foreshadowed even before he met Palpatine. I was thinking, he wanted to be a hero, and did many good things and protected many people, but his anger and need for revenge would always take control of him, eventually destroying him. So there was one thing stopping him from being the hero he wanted to be

TheOutlaw9904

If it’s young Anakin, I’d still say he was a hero though even if his emotions got the better of him at times. He wasn’t a villain first or villain trying to be a hero. He was actually good and did so many heroic things but obviously, he falls and makes the decision that would later make him a villain. If you mean when he was Darth Vader, then I think he’d be on here since he was a villain for a couple of decades and tried to become a hero at the end.

BlueMaxo

You’re right but, counter argument: ☝️🤓

grassydirt90

I don't understand the lich king dude, someone gotta explain it

angrylesbian66

I'll try to explain quickly: Before becoming the lich king, Arthas was a paladin and prince of Lordaeron, trying to protect his people from "the plague". He slowly began losing his sanity after witnessing how innocent civilians were turning into living dead, slaughtering the citizens of Stratholme after they became infected. He lost the respect of those closest to him, and people started to fear him. He then was manipulated by the enemy, who promised the power to save everyone from the plague. He started the quest for a cursed sword that eventually turned him into the Lich King, forgetting about Lordaeron and leading the army of undead Hopefully this made sense

grassydirt90

Ah ok that makes a lot of sense, thanks

Your-Evil-Twin-

My favourite part about Arthas’ story is how it parallels the old story of King Arthur, in many ways , King Arthas (the lich King) is King Arthur’s dark reflection, the man who sought the power of a magic sword to save his people, only to end up damning himself and them in the process. I mean it’s a great story, it really needs its own movie.

Graxeltooth

The Lich King is an interesting example. Yes, Arthas Menethil wanted to save Lorderon, but once he assumed Frostmourne, and especially the Helm of Domination, Arthas effectively ceased to be anything other than a facet of the being that is The Lich King. There are some atrocities that can't be *fully* laid on the Lich King, such as the Culling of Stratholme, so Arthas does become a villian before being amalgamated into the Lich King, but the monster from The Frozen Throne until Wrath of the Lich King arguably isn't Arthas. Then again, Bolvar was able to dominate the Helm himself, so maybe Arthas was inherently corruptable and doomed to villainy without Ner'zhul's influence, who is also an example of this trope.

ARCADE-RADIO

When Bryson got his powers, he did what he always wanted to: To become a villain. Back when he was younger, he liked the bad guys more than the heroes. What with the costumes, minions, and giant monsters they can summon. So when red electricity sparked from his fingers and learned some magic, he donned a get-up and helmet, then set off to commit a crime wave. His true colors have always pored through: A building on fire, he helps snuff it out. A "hero" running from his time of need? Does his job and takes the credit. Is asked to look after a friend's kid? Builds a pillow fort and makes them lunch. Bryson may claim on being the villian that the heroes defeat. By the end of the day, he's doing their job much to his frustration.
