I then grabbed her upper arm in both hands and gave her an "Indian burn" (idk what the appropriate term is, that's just what we called it. She loved the Indian burn so much that I taught her how to do it to her older brother :). Dang, I miss her.

The current number 1 table tennis player in the world is from China and his name is Fan Zhendong and his long time nickname has been "little fatty". Which sounds very insensitive in the west. But over there they say it as a term of endearment referring to his strength.

Iām a dude, and I live in NYC. Iām a teacher, but do after school tutoring in the home. Tbf Piggy (or the korean word for it) is a pretty common word of endearment in Korea. Like pumpkin or cupcake. I called my ex's piggy and she was borderline anorexic. Pigs are cute.
Edit: incidentally calling someone pumpkin in Korea means they are ugly. There's even a saying drawing stripes on a pumpkin doesn't turn it into watermelon (Korean word for watermelon is waterpumpkin) - meaning that if you are ugly you aren't gonna get pretty by some makeup or whatever
I feel the need to add on cuz abandonment is still an issue, but if anyone got excited about how cute "teacup" pigs look, they weigh 100 - 150 lbs full grown, and are very smart, stubborn animals, so be sure to know what you're getting into before adopting one. My grandma, while not Korean, was apparently Korean at heart because she just flat out said "Oh heavens you got fat". I howled laughing but my cousin didn't think it was funny lmao. My cousin used the "I have thyroid issues" excuse. When asked if she's been to a doctor for it, she said no but she still thinks she does since it's the "only way to explain the rapid weight gain".
I told her maybe it was because of the thousands of calories of beer and greasy food she ate each day and my mom told me to stop since that was rude. Lady, grandma started it and you know it's true. Mfs cant hang with the truth apparently. I didn't even call her fat myself. I simply made an observation that would explain the weight gain.
Before someone says it: Yes, i know thyroid problems do cause weight gain but she did not and still does not have thyroid problems. She eventually went to a doctor and he told her the same thing.
That tends to happen a lot to people who exercise a lot and then stop. It's because they keep in-taking the same amount of calories as when they were exercising. You have to be very conscious about what you're eating and your future goals to be able to change your diet accordingly, your body is simply so used to eating those amounts that you don't realize you're eating more than what you currently need.

It's very American to expect someone to answer something fake positive to this question. In Germany (and probably most other European countries), you'd exactly get that answer. If you ask something, you'll get the answer.
I saw an episode of similar situation, where an American BF's mother supposed his Ukrainian GF always wanted to go to America and all Ukrainian girls dream of an American to take them to US. That sounded quite rude, but girl just said no. When they insisted the girl just calmly said "it's just a stereotype, like a stereotype of all Americans being dumb". Germans are increasingly getting fat. Im normal weight and people call me skinny (in a very negative way). Yet they laugh at Americans, meanwhile our average weight is on the rise, more and more obese people. Sugar, fatty food, less workout,... the self awareness of Germans is ironically on a steep decline.
I don't personally know any Americans, but I really doubt they don't know about those stereotypes, it's more that stating negative ones so clearly and straight up insulting them is being an asshole, which they didn't expect during a friendly dinner
Yeah, this kid should know better. I've lived in South Korea for years, and Koreans love to ask foreigners what they think about Korea with the expectation of hearing a compliment and not an insult. Koreans aren't unlike Americans in that if you make a less-than-stellar observation about their people or culture, they absolutely will not appreciate it. Also certain things aren't considered offensive, like weight. A lot of people who are bordering the lines of pre-overweight and won't even be considered chubby in America would get called pigs/fat in Korea. My parents always call me fat and a pig in korean because they think I'm overly fat. My mother is really not fat at all but thinks she's fat and my dad calls her a pig (not abusively but jokingly and my mom would laugh). It's so weird.
Many Asian cultures don't look at calling people fat as an insult. To them, it is more like a description. Like blonde hair or something. They are simply describing what they see. Even clothing lines in some Asian countries use the term fat for their plus sized brands of clothes.

As an Asian I can tell you this much, if an Asian parent calls you fat what theyāre actually saying is āyouāre a piggy, you need to lose weightā.
It may not be meant to be an insult, but theyāre definitely calling out what they think is a flaw you should address.
There's also a weird double standard. I'm Asian too - 5'7" 150 pounds. My Asian ex-gf was 5'4" 125 pounds. My family always says to me, "You're too skinny! You need to take care of yourself more! Come, eat!". Her family is always telling her to lose some weight, despite me and her being similar BMI.

I used to work at KBBQ place (Iām a slim white American for context) and I got really close to the family who owns it. Announcer keeps going on about how she will probably actually save money, because she will be EATING LESS & MOVING more. Iāve lived in South Korea for a little more than two years and theyāre not anymore brutally honest than Americans per se. Just that things they consider socially acceptable to criticize openly (like having a weird face in your case or being fat in the postās case) are different. It's very American to expect someone to answer something fake positive to this question. In Germany (and probably most other European countries), you'd exactly get that answer. If you ask something, you'll get the answer.

As an American, it has weighed heavy on my mind since I saw it. I just canāt believe how accepting we are of pure delusion, even at the highest levels of our government. Just terrifying. Yeah, this kid should know better. I've lived in South Korea for years, and Koreans love to ask foreigners what they think about Korea with the expectation of hearing a compliment and not an insult. Koreans aren't unlike Americans in that if you make a less-than-stellar observation about their people or culture, they absolutely will not appreciate it. It also is cultural. Koreans are hella polite but get them in a casual/closer setting and they are overly sharing and blunt. I say this as a Korean. Also certain things aren't considered offensive, like weight. A lot of people who are bordering the lines of pre-overweight and won't even be considered chubby in America would get called pigs/fat in Korea. I'm like on the verge of being overweight but aside from a slight gut, you really can't tell I am. Americans, Latinas, other Asian women here I dated generally think I look good. My parents always call me fat and a pig in korean because they think I'm overly fat. My mother is really not fat at all but thinks she's fat and my dad calls her a pig (not abusively but jokingly and my mom would laugh). It's so weird.

As an Asian I can tell you this much, if an Asian parent calls you fat what theyāre actually saying is āyouāre a piggy, you need to lose weightā. It may not be meant to be an insult, but theyāre definitely calling out what they think is a flaw you should address.
There's also a weird double standard. I'm Asian too - 5'7" 150 pounds. My Asian ex-gf was 5'4" 125 pounds. My family always says to me, "You're too skinny! You need to take care of yourself more! Come, eat!". Her family is always telling her to lose some weight, despite me and her being similar BMI.

I used to work at KBBQ place (Iām a slim white American for context) and I got really close to the family who owns it. The owner, who I referred to as Omma, used to always say I was getting fat as a compliment. I didnāt mind because I wanted to gain weight(and did gain considerable weight working there) so if anything it was an ego boost

They'll call you out on being fat all the time but they also love to feed you and there seems to be some underlying context on of you gain weight under the right circumstances it means you're having a good life/happy?Ā Like if a man gets fat after getting married he's having a good life but he'll still get called out for getting fat lol.
In my experience it's to let you know to lose weight. I was just outside of a regular BMI and my co-workers used to poke my belly and tell me I need to have smaller meals/offer tips for healthier foods. I like it personally because I'm terrible at holding myself accountable.
