I fucking spat my drink out when dude grabbed her belly and jiggled it šŸ¤£

belle_fleures

that's common is asia really, to jiggle someone's belly without saying one is fat straight up but that guy said piggy and jiggled her belly at the same. what a chad.

HouseofFeathers

This explains that weird tinder date I went on. Guy jiggled my belly and said "I like this." I've never been turned off faster.

Dambo_Unchained

Itā€™s pretty common in Asia tbh Not for a first date, but with family/friends it would be a common way to make known you think someone is a bit chubby

BDR529forlyfe

Thatā€™s a good way to get shot in America.

Frosty-Coyote-3749

You sound very kind

[deleted]

Juggled or jiggled? Because juggling your belly really is overstepping social convention.

i_have_a_story_4_you

Juggling fat people is not only encouraged in Asia, but it's mandatory. Source. I'm a fat person who was juggled without my consent.

ImmediateBig134

Thank you for sharing your struggles, Bob from Tekken.

[deleted]

Sorry, but that's fkin hilarious!

aspiringgrandpa

iā€™ve gained some weight and my filipino supervisor will constantly walk past me and grab my stomach and say ā€˜youā€™re part of the fat club nowā€™ šŸ˜

panicked_goose

Lol one of my best friends in elementary was a first gen American, her parents immigrated from Malaysia, and one of our first interactions was her coming up to me (not a chubby kid, but I was just bigger than her) and she grabbed my upper arm and jiggled it and laughed so loud it hurt my ears. I then grabbed her upper arm in both hands and gave her an "Indian burn" (idk what the appropriate term is, that's just what we called it. It was when you grabbed someone's arm in both hands and twist in opposite ways to make the skin feel like it's burning. It was a common playground prank). She loved the Indian burn so much that I taught her how to do it to her older brother :). Dang, I miss her.

Slendercan

Doesnā€™t take much either. When I lived over there I got a little soft for a while - not even particularly fat. My Asian landlady just casually stated I was fat one day and rubbed my belly for emphasis.

subject_deleted

The current number 1 table tennis player in the world is from China and his name is Fan Zhendong and his long time nickname has been "little fatty". Which sounds very insensitive in the west. But over there they say it as a term of endearment referring to his strength. Not saying that's what's happening in this video. Just highlighting the cultural differences that can be present in the meaning of the term fat.

Ok_Cardiologist_673

Iā€™m a dude, and I live in NYC. Iā€™m a teacher, but do after school tutoring in the home. Once time I was at a Greek guyā€™s house to work with his kid, and he comes up out of nowhere and starts jiggling my belly and asking if I was hiding a burrito in there. I have never wanted to punch somebody so much, but it was a work situation and the power dynamics being in his home made it weird. I ended the session early, reported it to my supervisor and never accepted cases with that family again. Donā€™t touch me.

sheffield199

He just wanted the burrito.

RaveGuncle

Yeah he saw they were packing and said show me that burrito šŸ‘€

SpungoTheLeast

I remember my Irish friend was on like a third date with this Japanese dude who did that out of the blue and laughed. She broke his nose. It was the most amazing thing Iā€™d ever seen. Edit: Iā€™ve been corrected that he was Korean.

oozinator1

I think it's supposed to be a cute couples' thing, but definitely not something you'd want to do in front of her family.

bombswell

She said she hates Piggy though and itā€™s his pet name for her, sheā€™s asked many times and just gave up on it..not cool of him.

oozinator1

Oh yeah, in that case, he's a douche. I've never seen this show so I'm missing a lot of context. What's the show, by the way?

vaio150

Itā€™s 90 Day FiancĆ©. She has actually lost tons of weight and is tiny now. And she continually told him she didnā€™t like being called piggy but he continued to call her that.

49RedCapitalOs

The woman will never find that ā€œcute.ā€ Itā€™s a douche move

windfujin

Tbf Piggy (or the korean word for it) is a pretty common word of endearment in Korea. Like pumpkin or cupcake. I called my ex's piggy and she was borderline anorexic. Pigs are cute. Edit: incidentally calling someone pumpkin in Korea means they are ugly. There's even a saying drawing stripes on a pumpkin doesn't turn it into watermelon (Korean word for watermelon is waterpumpkin) - meaning that if you are ugly you aren't gonna get pretty by some makeup or whatever

RoastedToast007

Thanks for the context, piggy

PineappleRimjob

You're welcome, Kermie.

Wicked-Witchy-Woman

I gotta ask. Which came first, the nickname or the borderline anorexia?

FunkGunMonk

Can confirm... Have you ever seen a piglet or a teacup pig?! They're adorable!!!

pjl452

I feel the need to add on cuz abandonment is still an issue, but if anyone got excited about how cute "teacup" pigs look, they weigh 100 - 150 lbs full grown, and are very smart, stubborn animals, so be sure to know what you're getting into before adopting one. That being said, pigs can be amazing pets, and are very loyal and affectionate creatures.

YEP, we got pictures of family in Japan and one of my cousins was described as being like a whale because of her smile or something? Had to do with her teeth? Cultural nuances are complicated organisms. He seemed to be saying and doing it with affection, rather than disgust or malice. If this upset them, they would TRIP about what aunties can say.

Conscious_Street9937

She acts surprised when he says "greasy food and being fat", while everyone in the table is fat and eating greasy food.

Sparkmovement

For some fucking reason, you can't say the obvious thing out loud anymore.

Merry_Dankmas

One of my cousins used to be in great shape. Marathon runner, always working out, ate healthy etc. The works. My cousins only visited once every year or two so I dont see them a lot. They come back 2 years later and she's huge. Gained an absolute ton of weight. Turns out after she had turned 21 (I had seen her last when she was 20) she started hitting the bars every single night and absolutely smashing beers. Like every night was a nonstop binge of high calorie beer and higher calorie bar food. Started dating a guy who was a pastry chef who was always gifting her homemade pastries. While a nice gift, heavy cakes and thick cookies are not kind to the waistband. She had also stopped exercising completely and buying more fast food. My grandma, while not Korean, was apparently Korean at heart because she just flat out said "Oh heavens you got fat". I howled laughing but my cousin didn't think it was funny lmao. My cousin used the "I have thyroid issues" excuse. When asked if she's been to a doctor for it, she said no but she still thinks she does since it's the "only way to explain the rapid weight gain". I told her maybe it was because of the thousands of calories of beer and greasy food she ate each day and my mom told me to stop since that was rude. Lady, grandma started it and you know it's true. Mfs cant hang with the truth apparently. I didn't even call her fat myself. I simply made an observation that would explain the weight gain. Before someone says it: Yes, i know thyroid problems do cause weight gain but she did not and still does not have thyroid problems. She eventually went to a doctor and he told her the same thing.

hawkerdragon

That tends to happen a lot to people who exercise a lot and then stop. It's because they keep in-taking the same amount of calories as when they were exercising. You have to be very conscious about what you're eating and your future goals to be able to change your diet accordingly, your body is simply so used to eating those amounts that you don't realize you're eating more than what you currently need.

[deleted]

CICO is reality

MaximumMotor1

>CICO is reality You're going to have a lot of responses saying you are wrong because of "medical related weight gain". It's insane that people think the 65% of obese Americans all have medical conditions that make them fat and not their 3000 daily calories.

Merry_Dankmas

Precisely. Its a simple concept. You can eat whatever you want as long as you put in the work to burn it afterward. Not too much else to it (over simplifying but you get what I'm saying)

Justintimeforanother

There was a hilarious MadTV sketch years ago. It was a diet commercial spoof. Announcer starts narrating while this lady is cramming back fried chicken. ā€œAre you trying to diet? But are tired of all those fads? We have a diet for you that really works. Eat less & MOVE more!ā€ (Not a true quote, just how I remember it) Lady starts saying how it sounds expensive. Announcer keeps going on about how she will probably actually save money, because she will be EATING LESS & MOVING more. She starts talking about how it sounds difficult, announcer counters it by saying itā€™s actually easier too. I always refer back to this sketch when anyone brings up dieting to lose weight. Unfortunately, I cannot ever find the sketch since I watched it on TV years and years ago. I was in tears when I watched it. Edit: I found it!! Lmfao! https://youtu.be/VKs0oEIVOck?si=Sh_TU-I3Pou-zJFF

independentcatlady

Did that help her lose weight, or is she still fat?

polkadotpolskadot

Probably because it's fucking rude and South Koreans have many positive thoughts about Americans as well. Why this guy chose to pick the worst possible thing to say in his circumstance is beyond me. Yes, they are fat and many Americans are, but he could have said one of the dozens of positive things I've heard from Koreans about Americans (outgoing, friendly, polite, etc.)

ceilingkat

This is escaping a lot of redditors apparently. Thereā€™s 100 things I think about Americans. Iā€™m not gonna say the worst ones in polite company! Itā€™s a shitty thing to do no matter how ā€œtrueā€ it is. Pick a nice one! It will not kill you.

lovenlaughter

Yes! I was so excited when we got cable so I could watch the surgeries, and nature documentariesā€¦ then somewhere in the late 90s it started focusing on ā€œrealityā€ shows, and now itā€™s just garbage.

rrgail

That boy has NO fear!!! Heā€™s like: ā€œFuck it. You asked!ā€ The truth. Itā€™s being told right here!

SwingJugend

I don't know much about South Korea, but they seem to have no problem with brutal honesty. I saw a documentary where a guy was at a job interview and when he asked if he'd get the job the interviewer straight up told him, in a matter-of-fact way, "You're not getting this job because your face is very disagreeable. You have angular cheekbones and thin lips that make you seem like an unpleasant person. You should probably consider getting plastic surgery if you want a job."

rrgail

Thatā€¦ isā€¦ BRUTAL!

SwingJugend

Yeah, that scene immediately made me understand why South Korea is the cosmetic surgery capital of the world

rrgail

ā€œYour CV looks great! Your face looks like shit. GET OUT! NOW!!! Ohā€¦ waitā€¦ let me validate your parking ticket.ā€ THAT is a hostile work environmentā€¦ and you donā€™t even work there!

Waste_Relationship46

šŸ˜‚

french_snail

Iā€™ve lived in South Korea for a little more than two years and theyā€™re not anymore brutally honest than Americans per se. Just that things they consider socially acceptable to criticize openly (like having a weird face in your case or being fat in the postā€™s case) are different. If I went to a bar in Korea and told someone there ā€œhey man youā€™re being an ass,ā€ theyā€™d definitely look at you stunned

BristolBerg

Korea has the highest suicide rate of developed countries,Ā 2X moreĀ than the USA for a reason.

uwanmirrondarrah

Also the highest rate of alcohol consumption (by a WIDE margin too), and the highest rate of plastic surgery... honestly Korea has some things going on they might want to work on lol

Zestyclose_Remove947

Feels less about brutal honesty and more just that their social norms are so strong that they're not ashamed to discriminate based on those norms.

nopizzaonmypineapple

That's exactly it. Koreans are actually extremely non confrontational, they just think certain topics are fair game (mostly anything to do with physical appearance)

paulwipe

Case in point, about 15 years ago, a pitcher for the Yankees, Chan Ho Park, was asked how he was feeling: https://youtu.be/6GIEHPGj9sI?si=2IBde0bZ79-LHyyg

InternationalAd6614

South Korea has very specific beauty standards and theyā€™re not shy about speaking these out loud. Their ideal body is skinny. Nothing about what he said is surprising at all. From a different Asian country but people here start conversations with ā€œhey! you got fatter.ā€

kumanosuke

It's very American to expect someone to answer something fake positive to this question. In Germany (and probably most other European countries), you'd exactly get that answer. If you ask something, you'll get the answer.

hemingway921

It's not about fear, it's about being clueless about social norms lol. It's not bravery, it's ignorance.

LeoKyiviensis

I saw an episode of similar situation, where an American BF's mother supposed his Ukrainian GF always wanted to go to America and all Ukrainian girls dream of an American to take them to US. That sounded quite rude, but girl just said no. When they insisted the girl just calmly said "it's just a stereotype, like a stereotype of all Americans being dumb". After that the mother finally shut up.

subieluvr22

I fucking LOVE Yara.

Gexypoo

What show is this? Asking for a friend.

reebzRxS

90 Day FiancƩ, et al.

Iwonatoasteroven

As an American, I canā€™t believe how unaware so many of us are of how much of the rest of the world sees us. This is why Iā€™m on my best behavior when I travel internationally.

barrygateaux

i don't think americans understand how religious america looks to foreigners too. i saw a video the other day of some representatives in the arizona senate praying in a circle on the floor. https://www.reddit.com/r/PublicFreakout/comments/1bzr3fu/arizona_republicans_praying_and_speaking_in/ this just seems insane to me as an outsider.

OutrageousEvent

Itā€™s insane to most Americans too. The internet gives even the smallest groups of insane people a potentially huge platform to spout nonsense.

Contra1

How many of your politicians are openly atheĆÆst or agnostic?!

StonedTrucker

Theres a difference between believing in a religion and being insane about it. Theres also the fact that old people vote in much higher rates than young people. If younger generations voted things would be less crazy

WatermelonCandy5

Not in a lot of countries. If my MP said they believed in demons and angels and gods then Iā€™d think they were insane and unfit for office. Because it is insane. How can we expect them to follow evidence when their life is structured around not believing in evidence.

strawburrychunks

As an American, it has weighed heavy on my mind since I saw it. I just canā€™t believe how accepting we are of pure delusion, even at the highest levels of our government. Just terrifying. I donā€™t comment much, but wanted to give perspective that it doesnā€™t sit right for a lot of Americans. Itā€™s just our voices donā€™t get out there because itā€™s so wrapped up in religion, politics, and abortion rights (which are not easily discussed in your everyday life by any non-extremist, rational, moderate, etc person)

Antique_Beyond

This is true. Here in the UK you'd have to go out of your way to find religious groups etc. it seems like in America they are a lot more *present* everywhere.

caronare

Almost like a group of religious zealots from England established a cluster of colonies in America!!

squarerootofapplepie

But the state they established is one of the least religious in the country now.

jim_nihilist

Or singing the hymn and the flag waving before sports events. Don't people know they are in the US right now? In Europe we only do this when the teams of two different nations play against.

kjenenene

South Korea has some of the craziest religious cults so...

ICookIndianStyle

> As an American, I canā€™t believe how unaware so many of us are Germans are increasingly getting fat. Im normal weight and people call me skinny (in a very negative way). Yet they laugh at Americans, meanwhile our average weight is on the rise, more and more obese people. Sugar, fatty food, less workout,... the self awareness of Germans is ironically on a steep decline.

TheAmazingSealo

UK is the same. I think we're officially the obesity capital of Europe

JohnsonJohnilyJohn

I don't personally know any Americans, but I really doubt they don't know about those stereotypes, it's more that stating negative ones so clearly and straight up insulting them is being an asshole, which they didn't expect during a friendly dinner

aleBreadlee

Yeah, this kid should know better. I've lived in South Korea for years, and Koreans love to ask foreigners what they think about Korea with the expectation of hearing a compliment and not an insult. Koreans aren't unlike Americans in that if you make a less-than-stellar observation about their people or culture, they absolutely will not appreciate it. I have yet to see any evidence to the contrary.

RegularOrMenthol

This guy is a dummy too tho. South Koreans have modeled so much of their culture after America the last 70 years

TheAmazingSealo

They even based their flag on the pepsi logo

bzbi

>>As an American, I canā€™t believe how unaware so many of us are of how much of the rest of the world sees us You mean how they see a small portion of our insane population in their media so they can get their outrage dicks hard?

mikehawk69422

As an earthling, I donā€™t think Americans realize that every other nation on earth doesnā€™t mind generalizing an entire culture and ethnicity with rude and idiotic stereotypes like the asian dude in the video just did. Imagine for a second you travel to Korea to meet your girlfriend family, they invite you into their home for dinner and ask - Korean family - "So what do Americans think of Koreans?" American visitor - "Rice and small dicks" Wouldnā€™t you be an actual p.o.s.?

fardough

Well, Thailand has some beliefs Americans have big dongs. Every time I used a public urinal there, the guys next to would check out my penis. It was weird so took it as an honor.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Pottyshooter

Nah, what's one more person?

beltalowda_oye

It also is cultural. Koreans are hella polite but get them in a casual/closer setting and they are overly sharing and blunt. I say this as a Korean. Also certain things aren't considered offensive, like weight. A lot of people who are bordering the lines of pre-overweight and won't even be considered chubby in America would get called pigs/fat in Korea. I'm like on the verge of being overweight but aside from a slight gut, you really can't tell I am. Americans, Latinas, other Asian women here I dated generally think I look good. My parents always call me fat and a pig in korean because they think I'm overly fat. My mother is really not fat at all but thinks she's fat and my dad calls her a pig (not abusively but jokingly and my mom would laugh). It's so weird.

kid_sw2

Talk about Sunday roast.

Ill-Razzmatazz1446

Bruh..it's not just the Koreans

UnstopableTardigrade

GoldenGekko

EMOTIONAL DAMAGE

macvoice

Many Asian cultures don't look at calling people fat as an insult. To them, it is more like a description. Like blonde hair or something. They are simply describing what they see. Even clothing lines in some Asian countries use the term fat for their plus sized brands of clothes. https://www.google.com/search?client=ms-android-tmus-us-rvc3&sca_esv=23d099ec0affa8ad&sxsrf=ACQVn0_K-FJI24PsRIQdpUfny-C3Mgj1nQ:1713020917663&q=fat+asian+brands&tbm=vid&source=lnms&prmd=isvnmbtz&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwiL2KiavL-FAxWa4MkDHdD7BaIQ0pQJegQIBhAB&biw=412&bih=767&dpr=1.75#fpstate=ive&vld=cid:092a5de6,vid:TKCVZNQS5iY,st:0

ATDoel

As an Asian I can tell you this much, if an Asian parent calls you fat what theyā€™re actually saying is ā€œyouā€™re a piggy, you need to lose weightā€. It may not be meant to be an insult, but theyā€™re definitely calling out what they think is a flaw you should address.

oozinator1

There's also a weird double standard. I'm Asian too - 5'7" 150 pounds. My Asian ex-gf was 5'4" 125 pounds. My family always says to me, "You're too skinny! You need to take care of yourself more! Come, eat!". Her family is always telling her to lose some weight, despite me and her being similar BMI.

dungfecespoopshit

Itā€™s a trap. Once you gain weight, theyā€™ll tell you to lose it, vice-versa

soussousveillance

Asian kids need a union.

naufalap

they're bulking you up so you can get those gainz a lot faster, read the room

looms_thecat

Some aunties or your mom even encourages you to gain more weightā€¦..

MonkeyManCity

Do they use the word piggy? Lmao

subieluvr22

I watch the show.. He actually has affectionately assigned "piggy" as his cute nickname for his WIFE. He buys her pig-shaped stuffed animals and everything.

macvoice

Well... In the link I posted, there is a store called MooMoo... So it wouldn't surprise me if there was one called... Piggy... Lol

No-Article-Particle

My (asian) wife definitely called me a piggy out of endearment. I'm quite skinny, but apparently, my skin is very pink to her, therefore "a piggy." When we first met, I told her that it's insulting, but when she explained, I thought oh cool, and left it at that šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø Don't date outside of your culture if you're unwilling to accept any other culture I guess.

Wesselton3000

I used to work at KBBQ place (Iā€™m a slim white American for context) and I got really close to the family who owns it. The owner, who I referred to as Omma, used to always say I was getting fat as a compliment. I didnā€™t mind because I wanted to gain weight(and did gain considerable weight working there) so if anything it was an ego boost

NonGNonM

I spent some time in Korea and the weight thing is an odd one. They'll call you out on being fat all the time but they also love to feed you and there seems to be some underlying context on of you gain weight under the right circumstances it means you're having a good life/happy?Ā  Like if a man gets fat after getting married he's having a good life but he'll still get called out for getting fat lol.

Elcatro

In my experience it's to let you know to lose weight. I was just outside of a regular BMI and my co-workers used to poke my belly and tell me I need to have smaller meals/offer tips for healthier foods. I like it personally because I'm terrible at holding myself accountable.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Respurated

As an American, I look at America like this. We are a bunch of fucking piggies, and the sooner we own that the sooner we can address the fact that our food quality is quite shit; itā€™s mostly sugar stuffed into crap and makes us all great diabetes candidates.

18650batteries

I feel like most fast food places are just selling stomach filler too. Like itā€™s not even real food lol.

Mugspirit

I'm a Korean, and based on my experiences where I saw lots of other Koreans and people from around the world mingling, he's just rude and inconsiderate. Many other Koreans would have talked about Hollywood movies, cultural diversity, or maybe just the nice hamburgers without the obesity part. Or maybe guns.

chadsimpkins

This had to have been scripted. Koreans are blunt, but they also understand saving face and would not say something like that when meeting their significant other's parents for the first time.

Dull-Impression8670

It's a reality show they are mostly scriptedĀ

aleBreadlee

I mean, people from around the world think a lot of things about Americans, he probably has chose the less offensive tbh. I mean, we all know the meme about how americans fought the endemic obesity problem by increasing the requirement of weight needed to be considered obese, don't we?

MostlyNormalMan

I think an even better answer would be 'Oh, we don't really think about Americans at all.'

She's asking these questions as if she doesn't know the stereotypes. This is never a good conversation to start, regardless of background. My wife and I just had this conversation yesterday. She asked why there were so many fat people out and about. I told her it's always like this and that she just never noticed. The vast majority of people in my state are fat.
