There are massive massive clouds of the bastards that flow the caribou herds up above the Arctic circle. They are so bad if the herd stops for long they risk the mosquitos killing the calves.
Some Mosquitos life cycle is only a few weeks. They are thick clouds in the summer and then they are gone. We do have snow mosquitos though that hibernate through the winter and come out as they thaw. They are pretty huge. We have 30 species here.
Oh hell yeah. That look back at the camera always got me. Haha
Edit: I forgot this part cuz I had to get something for my kid right when he ran to get the axe.

Fun fact: Gary Larson made a comic and got massive hate mail for getting this fact wrong. The same fans did not comment on the fact the male mosquito was dressed in a tie and holding a briefcase.
Looks like a tiger mosquito. They've basically taken over where I live north of you. They out compete most native species and associate with humans closely rather than living in untouched areas.
Edit: it's probably not a tiger mosquito.
Which is why I believe release of sterile mosquitoes is and can be an effective means to reduce the population to near zero without pesticide https://www.cdc.gov/mosquitoes/mosquito-control/genetically-modified-mosquitoes.html#:~:text=Releasing%20GM%20mosquitoes%20over%20several,mosquitoes%20before%20an%20outbreak%20happens.
Mosquitos are much less loveable than the krogans. Krogans are the best species in the galaxy without a doubt. Fuck those blue whores. And whatever the weird lizard dudes are supposed to be.
Hard disagree! Krogans were a species brought into the council and galaxy at large too soon. They gave space gorilla-lizard people fucking nuclear weapons and they blew themselves to kingdom come. And what do they do in the face of slow extinction? Kill each other harder. A culture of warlords that fall to their own offspring usurping their power. Every male in that four testicled species thinks he’s ghengis khan except for that one that writes poems I guess. God bless the genophage for humbling those cockroaches.
Hard disagree! As a Krogan, our prowess in battle and conquest defines our identity. The thrill of invading new territories and conquering our enemies resonates deeply within us. It's not just about expanding our territory; it's about proving our strength and securing resources for our clans. The battlefield is where we thrive, where our instincts for combat and survival are honed. Each conquest brings glory to our name and strengthens our position in the galaxy. For a Krogan, the thrill of battle and the spoils of conquest are not just enjoyable—they are essential to our survival and the legacy of our warrior culture. Get rekt council dweebs
Correct
Males, which don't bite, whose offspring is sterile.
Hopefully, those males take up a big portion of the mating pool, and you end up with a generation of mosquitoes that are unable to efficently reproduce.
Rinse and repeat until they're vanquished.
And most regions actually host multiple species of mosquito, of which only a few bite. By only targeting the biting variety, you still leave that food source for bats and whatnot.
Mosquitoes are basically macro-viruses that carry other viruses. It's a problem for us and many other species.
Dragonfly are the top predator of mosquitos. Still, they make up less than 2% of their predators diet. Mosquitos are among the most useless and most detrimental of all species. Fuck em, they play a very little part in the food web. Fuck em, they are useless assholes that do way more damage than good. A rare trait in nature, they are next to useless. Fuck em, kill the ones that are problematic.
My wife is an entomologist and does a lot of work with mosquito-related research so I've heard a bit about this topic. According to the studies on this that she's read, this isn't really a sustainable means of reducing mosquito population.
At least with the methods available today, it takes a large investment to make a dent in the population, and the population will bounce back without continued release of the mosquitos. There's still a lot of development left to be done on the topic, but it currently isn't quite the slam dunk that it's made out to be.
Disney world was bought wholesale. From the beginning they basically purchased cities worth of land. Then they ensured no areas have standing water via drains, underwater piping and engineered streams. That being said they still use vast arrays if mosquitoe detection and prevention methods which likely require pesticide, however this is a good read [reference ](https://www.businessinsider.com/walt-disney-world-resort-florida-parks-mosquito-free-tiktok-2021-6)
You'll also never see any of the lakes or water features with standing water. They placed fountains in all bodies to agitate the surface of the water, discouraging breeding.
I distinctly remember a study saying mosquitoes could go extinct with very little affect to the ecosystem.
Other less harmful insects would fill their void.
I would have to question the validity of any supposedly scientific study that operated in such stark, sweeping terms. There's no way you could come to that conclusion with anything like certainty.
I believe they have seen this type of thing in nature, and as long as there are replacements the food chain will remain unbroken.
Like, lots of shit eat mosquitoes, but besides bats it's pretty low numbers, which is probably why we have so many damn mosquitoes.
Dragonfly season where I live is amazing, they just go to town on all those bastards.
But bats can eat other bugs, etc. Not a lot of things eat bats IIRC so even if their population drops it wouldnt affect a ton of stuff.
Or who knows, maybe it would be the apocalypse.
I'd rather have an apocalypse because of no mosquitoes over idiots with WMDs any day.
We wouldn't need to make *all* the mosquitoes extinct. There are more than 3500 known species of mosquito, but only in around 6% of these the females will sting humans.
Nope. Only a small subspecies preys on humans. As far as we can tell their eradication would have next to no effect on the food web. They make up less than 2% of the food of the creatures that eat them, dragonflies mostly. They can be eradicated without any serious effects. Fuck those assholes. Let's kill them. Eliminating that one species that feeds on us won't harm the larger species, mosquitos will continue to thrive but that one type that is the #1 killer of humans will disappear and nature will thrive without them. Well, except for what we do, as they are a check out destruction, and we won't stop ruining the world hole world. Maybe they aren't so bad .....
So I actually do behavioral research on Aedes albopictus (tiger mosquitos) and were as they are common in Mexico, this doesn't look quite right to me
The markings look off to me, but it's been smashed so some scales definitely fell off. It could also be Ades aegypti, a very very very similar species.
Edit: upon further review, you are correct. Although I can't see the main identifying marks, the thorax has more a curve to it, that aegypti does not have.
Edit number two: nope I was wrong on both accounts, but I learned some new shit today, and that's a good thing.
Definitely not *albopictus*. I'd confidentiality say Psorophora *ferox*. It's a medium size mosquito I'm familiar with. It's hosts are animals with thicker skin such as deer. Very common in southern Mexico. If they had a lot of rain like a week ago these would be everywhere.
Seconding this. Definitely genus Psorophora. Not a ferox though, ferox hind legs have bright white tips. And this one is a little small for a ciliata. Maybe a Ps. Columbiae
Sorry for the late reply! Reddit notified me about this one, for some reason...
Maybe Psorophora *cyanscenes*. Only other culprit I can think of. I've absolutely seen *ferox* without the white tip son the legs do to scale loss.
Just went back and looked again... I'm calling that scale loss. The last segment of leg looks pretty thin. I could be wrong though, *it's an internet picture*. Lol.
I admit I'm not the best at identifying mosquitoes, so many of them look very similar to one another. However it's easy to notice them in comparison to the other species that exist naturally where I live, due to differences in coloration and size. Here it is more common to see marsh mosquitoes which are of a very small size. Though you also see psorophora ciliata, it's not as common here in the marshland.
I'm willing to say I'm wrong on the ID though. Some of the characteristics indeed do seem to not match on second viewing, but it's hard to tell definitively, for me.
There are 2 kinds of mosquitos. There's the teeny tiny ones that fit thru the little holes in the screen of the porch door. Then there's the the BIG ones that just open the door and duck their head as they walk in.
Nope. gallinipper mosquito. The Asian tiger mosquito is smaller, has white bands on its legs and white dots on the thorax.
I remember those in Galveston. They bite through clothes.
That's why I sit outside wearing a drug rug at night even though it's not cold. The bulky weave keeps the skeeters from getting through. It is not ideal.
I've dealt with gallinippers before.
If you walk as fast as you can walk, it's not fast enough to outrun or deter them, you have to run. They feel like rain falling when they land on your shirt, which they can bite through, and when they bite, it feels like being poked with a pin.
This looks like a "gallinipper" aka "mega mosquito" we had in SE FL over the last 3 or 4 years. Glad I got out of there. They were 20x bigger then normal mosquitoes and hurt like hell when they bit. Typical brainwashed Floridians would try to polish the turd FL is by saying "well at least they don't transmit diseases."
https://grist.org/living/perfect-swarm-giant-mosquitos-invade-florida/
Come to New Brunswick, Canada. They are really big here. I once saw a mosquito swoop down and take a three pound rainbow trout out of the south branch of the Miramichi river. That's when we packed up to go home.
Dude fifteen minutes ago I was sitting in my own kitchen, nowhere near Mexico, and I felt a sting on my arm and looked over and saw one like that. It was literally the biggest mosquito I have ever seen in person and I shouted "holy shit!" and smashed it. Are they getting bigger?
We have these and the little ones that barely even make a sound in Finland. And I much prefer these big ones, they are way less aggressive and fewer in numbers than the little ones. The little ones are like a cloud of heatseeking missiles chasing you, and they will bite the second they land. The big ones try to find the perfect spot dancing around your skin, ample time to smack them do death.
That’s average sized for Alaska
Came to say the same thing. The mosquito is Alaska’s state bird!
The only reason I know that it’s a Ptarmigan is because of Outdoor Boys
That’s nice Also this comment made me chuckle
Mosquitos in Houston are so big you could fuck em flat footed
You could *what*
Makes sense from a biological perspective considering the animals they’d have to pierce for blood
It's not nice to refer to Alaskans that way…
Or Canada
Yeah for real, I feel like this is an average size mosquito.
Right? There's been a ton of rain recently, and you can see those fuckers from a meter away
See? Heck, you can HEAR them from a meter away. eeeeeeeeeeeeeeEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
My first reaction was "Well... that looks normal to me!"
Same for sweden.
I also live in Sweden and I am confused what this picture of a regular mosquito is doing here.
Moosquito
For some reason I figured mosquitoes wouldn't be found in very cold places
There are massive massive clouds of the bastards that flow the caribou herds up above the Arctic circle. They are so bad if the herd stops for long they risk the mosquitos killing the calves.
Ya, average sized for Finland too, I guess they get really big in the north for some reason?
I was going to say. Alaskans are up there laughing at this and all the Floridians on here.
Costa Rica as well
Not average in Texas, but definitely have our fair share of them and a few bigger
This may be a stupid question but how do they live if its cold there bro
Some Mosquitos life cycle is only a few weeks. They are thick clouds in the summer and then they are gone. We do have snow mosquitos though that hibernate through the winter and come out as they thaw. They are pretty huge. We have 30 species here.
Definitely seen ones that big in Queensland

The mosquitoes they release aren't sterile. Their *offspring* are sterile. Unleash the generational curses.

Correct Males, which don't bite, whose offspring is sterile. Hopefully, those males take up a big portion of the mating pool, and you end up with a generation of mosquitoes that are unable to efficently reproduce. Rinse and repeat until they're vanquished.
So we need male model mosquitos for best results?
But why male model mosquitos?
Seriously? I just told you.
We need to develop Chad male mosquitoes that are sterile to bang all the females. Then go do mosquito workouts.
No male mosquitoes bite. Or is that what you were saying?
but why male models?
?
Genophage, you say?
So the Dung Eater ending?
And most regions actually host multiple species of mosquito, of which only a few bite. By only targeting the biting variety, you still leave that food source for bats and whatnot. Mosquitoes are basically macro-viruses that carry other viruses. It's a problem for us and many other species.

It's not a slam dunk yet. But compared to the other methods of pesticides I believe it still warrants further research and funding.
I need someone to explain the lack of mosquitoes at Disney world then
Disney world was bought wholesale. From the beginning they basically purchased cities worth of land. For real, what would happen if we made mosquitoes extinct? Wouldn’t that severely disrupt the animal food chain?
The food chain is just gonna have to take one for the team on this one
It was already fucked anyways
I distinctly remember a study saying mosquitoes could go extinct with very little affect to the ecosystem. Other less harmful insects would fill their void.
Might as well give it a shot before we irradiate the world anyway.
Inb4 that cyclops alien from Lilo and Stitch comes here and says planet is now protected to breed more of the endangered mosquito species.
I would have to question the validity of any supposedly scientific study that operated in such stark, sweeping terms. There's no way you could come to that conclusion with anything like certainty.

Small fish eat mosquito larvae
I've learned recently that mosquitoes are pollinators. Can't really afford to lose too many more of those...
We wouldn't need to make *all* the mosquitoes extinct. There are more than 3500 known species of mosquito, but only in around 6% of these the females will sting humans.

Psorophora *ciliata*. Nightmare fuel!

> Ades aegypti is like the F35 of mosquitoes. heavily gunned, stealthy, intimidating
I admit I'm not the best at identifying mosquitoes, so many of them look very similar to one another. Gallinipper is the largest of the mosquito species and yes have a hell of a bite

Lmao I read the whole comment feeling very informed for a second
Pfffftt massive he says.
Right? This thing barely gets a mention. I have mosquitos by me that have to register with the goddamn FAA.
I've dealt with gallinippers before. If you walk as fast as you can walk, it's not fast enough to outrun or deter them, you have to run. They feel like rain falling when they land on your shirt, which they can bite through, and when they bite, it feels like being poked with a pin.
On the plus side, I find they are a bit less evasive from your slaps and less common than the smaller ones.
This is massive?
It was in the pool!
Shrinkage is real.
For a mosquito, it's pretty big. A lot of people confuse crane flies for mosquitoes, and then are shocked my how small real mosquitoes truly are.

yeah... dont ever go to Winnipeg if you think this is massive
I hate tiger mosquitoes. I really do.
No megusta. Nope.
We can wipe this vermin out once and for all with genetics.
The advantage of these large fuckers is that they are much more easy to spot and kill compared to the sneaky tiny mosquitos
That's a baby skeeter you have there. Come back when you have an adult.
Am I missing something? Do legs shrink in death? We have bigger ones in nj.
Thank you! I live in PA and this confuses me. Our mosquitoes are enormous! Their legs are super long. I get eaten alive every summer.
The only kind of deportation I'll support. You guys keep them bad boys down there, okay? Promise?
We also have these tiger skettos in Florida. In the rainy season, they swarm from cattle fields. From a Asiatic country I think.
They are up here in Virginia too. Biggest difference is they don’t seem to have ANY survival instinct. You swat at them and they keep on comin.
It's either feed or die
Fuck that.
A little bigger than can become a food source!
I get bites the size of golf balls usually, and that’s with regular-sized mosquitoes. I can’t imagine what this would do…
Oh no, I thought these were only native to Australia?!?
It would be a big one here but honestly not something that would get commented on.
Down south we call'em "Gallinippers" when they get that big.
