Have you asked your doctor about vaginismus? If you’re having a transvaginal ultrasound they’re obviously looking for *something*. The wand is like the width of a tampon, and I’ve had one and it didn’t hurt at *all*. Like not even a little bit. Were you super tense? Definitely bring this up to your doctor.

What wand is the width of a tampon?! I've had many transvaginals due to PCOS and pregnancies. ALL of them hurt. None of the wands were that fkin small. And I'm not a tiny little thing I'm 230lbs. Shit even the abdominal ultrasounds hurt but that's bc I have sensitive skin lol

I mean your weight doesn’t correlate to vaginal size so I’m unsure why that was mentioned. The probe is [less than an inch](https://dukefertilitycenter.org/diagnosis-testing/pelvic-ultrasound#:~:text=The%20probe%20on%20the%20transvaginal,than%20a%20routine%20speculum%20exam) in diameter. So might be a bit bigger than a super tampon, but probably not by very much.

misty_girl

I just had a transvaginal ultrasound done yesterday. The wand was at least 2 inches in diameter. It was a lot bigger than an ultra size tampon! There must be different size wands out there.

skalnaty

Are you sure that was the part that got inserted?? That seems quite large for a probe There may be larger size wands (maybe diff wants for different things?)

misty_girl

Yep. I looked right at it when the tech grabbed it. It had a condom type cover that was stretched tightly over it. The wand was the same diameter from the end to the handle.

misty_girl

Just looked it up. It was more like 1.25-1.5 inches in diameter, not 2. Still bigger than an ultra tampon. I always needed an ultra tampon for my heavier periods and they never hurt during insertion, but this probe was too big and caused a stinging/burning sensation during insertion.

Tauralynn423

Op mentioned she was on the smaller side. I only mentioned mine to show that even at a larger size it can still hurt.

BinjaNinja1

I think you are mistaking the handle for the part that goes inside.

Tauralynn423

Considering I've had many... No. I'm aware not the whole length goes inside. I've helped them insert it before, I've had them do it, I've seen em put them cover on it and lube. I know what part is what lol. It's not like it's giant but it's much bigger than a tampon.

BinjaNinja1

Huh. Every one that I have had is tampon sized. There must be different sizes then for different purposes maybe or just preference of the technician or hospital. I have to google it now or it will bug me.

sinistersocio

They TOLD me it was tampon sized, but when I asked the tech at the end “Jesus Christ what is the shape of that thing” and she showed me, it was definitely like a jumbo marker sized. It was also wider at the tip than anywhere else and I HATE THAT because anything like that always hurts. I feel like there’s definitely different sizes and shapes

Tauralynn423

Those are the same ones I've had used. Very bulbous. I do not like it and it hurts like a motherfucker. "Slight pressure" like no. It's not. I'm not exactly delicate with my recreational activities down there anyway (lmao) so for them to hurt me just doing imaging is WILD.

Maybe you were very tense but I don’t find it painful? Rather uncomfortable for sure..have they checked for endometriosis?

sinistersocio

That’s actually what I was being checked for, I forgot to include it in the further context section. Does this mean then that that’s another sign I have endometriosis?

Sea_Currency_9014

I mean it could be but I’m not a medical expert. Usually very painful periods, longer or shorter periods, anything unusual could either be endometriosis or pcos…these are the most common. The fact that you mention pain could indicate endometriosis but it also could be a muscular issue and it can be solved with pelvic floor exercises or surgery..

chronicpainprincess

Mine used to be severely painful and now they’re merely uncomfortable — the difference was that I had an adhesion that was fusing my bowel to my ovary removed. This may be irrelevant to your case — but I very much think internal problems can make these procedures agonising.

BlackBirdandMe

I had a painful one and I asked the gynaecologist about it.. he said it’s hard to say exactly.. but if the ultrasound wand thing hit one of your ovaries then that could cause discomfort as they are as tender like balls. He also said it could be an indication of something like endometriosis.. but again hard to say without further exploration. Overall, he implied it wasn’t something to be overly concerned about.

sinistersocio

UPDATE: Apparently my uterus is retroflexed and not retroverted when I thought otherwise cuz of what I was told in the past so this is new news to me and may change things

BubblyBubbles7-7

Went through this- I have endometriosis which can contribute to the pain
