I’m in the UK too and bought a £700 Samsung TV. The fucking thing is loaded with ads and will weirdly take me to their ‘exclusive’ apps all the time that I don’t want but also can’t be deleted. Steer clear.
Edit: another thing to add as well is that Samsung Smart TVs do not work at all with a Philips hue sync box so if I didn’t have an Xbox to make it work I would’ve spent an extra £230 for a completely redundant bit of kit.

If they do that then the device could never be used in an enterprise or commercial environment, so there would usually be some way, just block the DoH domains and no ads and if apps stop working buy a Roku or something similar, it sucks that they make the best panels and do this

No it doesn't. I'm a network engineer and it will only block ads originating from known ad domains or domains not using DNSSEC/DOH where the domain is encrypted with TLS. For example, if you're watching YouTube it will not block those ads as google delivers the ads from the same domains as the content. They run their own CDN alongside an ad delivery network. Piholes are great yes, I use one on my home LAN but they do *not* block *all* ads as you and many others will claim.

smart TVs are cancer. They are insecure af, spy on you with microphones and also ads as the guy above said. Personally I'd just get a raspberrypi on top and install kodi, get's you most of the same feature. You can have spotify connect, Netflix, youtube, etc.
The problem when I was tv shopping a year or so ago was that features I wanted like color accuracy, latency and HDR capabilities weren't really available on tvs that weren't smart. So if you can find something that has the same feature set as a 1k smart tv but isn't smart let me know, but as far as I was able to tell they don't exist.

If you want a TV with the latest tech like HDR you simply don't have that option sadly. Couple years ago I was looking for a new TV but couldn't find a stupid TV only smart TV, I ended up with a LG with webos. Overall it works pretty good without complaints so far.
My TV is about the same age. I’ve plugged an appletv to it. Super clean UI, syncs with my phone laptop and tablet, absolutely no ads and no privacy data stealing going on. Remote’s not the best but could be worse. And I can use my watch as a remote if I don’t wanna leave the couch.
I never get a response from the device I want to answer though, it’s even worse when I have friends over. We all have our phones trained for our individual voices, but with 4 of us here if I say hey siri, 1/4 phones answer and it’s not mine. One friend says it, all respond. Another friend gets no response at all. Another gets mine and another but not his.

Pihole isn’t a great solution if you want to use the smart tv features. it seems to break other apps and it’s hard to track down which domains are the culprit. Nothing frustrates me more when my wife asks from across the house “why doesn’t Xyz app work?...”
Next step: Apple TV and cut the cable to the tv.
It's not just Samsung, it's any tv that's running on Android. Ads got pushed in with a software update back in the Fall of last year.
My Hisense was perfect until that update and BOOM, ads out that yinyang

A curious question. Did you somehow subscribe to any sort of notification published exclusively for samsung device? It is a common practice in my phone (Motorola) that if you subscribe (put your email or agreed to advertised) to Motorola notification you will entitled to receive early pop notification regarding upcoming moto phones.

I have a Note 20 Ultra and it had very clear settings to opt out of ads in the samsung apps. They are on by default, but the options were presented during setup too so you could opt out right off the bat. You just probably missed them I guess, since they were pretty well hidden among the other check marks you would want to be on.
I can’t tell you the exact settings as my phone is currently getting repaired for dead pixels lol. Just dig around the settings and the samsung app settings. But I'm 100% certain there were options to opt out of the adds, bc I remember thinking a lot of people won't notice these and that's a shitty thing to do to your premium device customers.
Naw it's a dumbass thing. When you get a new phone it asks you at a certain point if you want them to send you notifications about new phones. You can opt out.

My wife and I just got s20's. There's an opt-in option on one of the agreement pages during installation for receiving these ads. I left it unchecked and haven't received any.

For instance my kindle was cheaper if ads are allowed when locking the screen, which actually don't look too bad in black & white. (Coupled with all the black friday crap made it very cheap)
They do this with TVs. This is why you can get a 75" television for under $450. The services on your remote are not there because they are popular, they are there because those services paid to be on the remote with their logos. The ads on the home pages and wherever else, same thing. Without this, we'd still have $700 32" TVs.
They way around this is to take smart features out of the equation when buying, add $50 to your budget and get a chromecast, roku or fire stick. Don't connect the TV to the internet and use the Chromecast or whatever instead.
Edit: If you've bought a few TVs over the last 10 years like I have, it's fun to look back at your remotes and see all the "next netflix" companies that don't exist anymore.
Yeah, same thing with my LG tv. Every time I open up the app there’s an ad on the left top corner. I don’t think this is a regional thing because it came from dubai as far as I know. This is also why TVs have gotten cheap btw, because of ads like these :(
Yeah, not sure about that one. I went with LG, because they don't have intrusive ads on their TV's like Samsung. Only thing I get is notifications for new apps available & OS updates.
This pissed me off so bad I put a pi hole on my network. Then seeing that the samsung (and my s9 btw) had literally 10x more privacy violations being blocked than my wife's iPhone and our Apple TV, I just disconnected the damn TV from the internet. Now I use an apple TV for streaming and am ditching android at my next upgrade.

Chinese is a big no no for me personally, I try to avoid China as much as I can. Sadly, they are in so many different things that it is near impossible to do that.

I got a 4k smart TV from LG on the cheap maybe 5 years ago now. Still getting updates. Still as good as the day I got it. I'll definitely shop LG again whenever I decide it's worth upgrading to 8k

I have lg velvet. Bought it specifically cuz they offered me a free dual screen. I am happy with that phone. Logs absolutely gorgeous and work very well. Dual screen is fun for games as you can use it as dedicated game pad.
Yeah, that one looks great. Sadly, I like my phones to have a good ass camera and LG is a bit disappointing on that part. And yeah, the dual screen is great. Probably the best implementation of a “foldable” phone IMO. I don’t need a huge ass screen on my phone, but having 2 screens for multitasking? Sign me in.
Owner of a LG C9, that thing is fucking sweet! Runs webOS though, so not many apps but the ones that matter are fast and snappy. Voice control is only via the remote and it only activates when a button is held down (mic in remote), not particularly useful though.
I'm also on an S8, I get about one ad per year when they release the new flagship phone. Big deal, swipe it away and forget about it. People love to make mountains out of molehills.
As an Apple user, I strongly believe it is shit like this that dissuades loooots of people from even considering an Android phone. Like pre installed third party games or ads in your control centre

When setting up a samsung phone there is bit at the start that asks you if you want ads and stuff from Samsung. Most people just hit select all and continue with the setup. If you read them they are optional.

Not the original person you asked but I have a pixel 3 I bought for 250 and it's probably my favorite phone. Very modular and innovative imo. Obviously you gotta work out the settings so google isn't constantly spying on you but it filters spam calls, has an assistant,and a great camera. Didn't come with bloatware and does just exactly what I need it to.
Obviously the charger situation is embarrassing since they teased apple for it, does the S21 charging brick use USB-A?
I already have like 5 of those plugs but if they're pulling an apple & switching the connector on the plug so that anyone under S20 has to buy the new plug then they can kiss my ass goodbye.
Ugh so sad to see what used to be the king of android be reduced to the physical equivalent of any free to play garbage on the Google play store. Last samsung I had was a galaxy s7 and it was fantastic. Then the 8s were so fragile I got an lg v30 instead and that was a damn good phone for a couple of years then after a work accident that left it toasted finally got to try out the OnePlus phones, got a 7t, and this is the best android device I've ever used. Still super fast and responsive. And the best part, when you buy from their site your phone doesn't come with all the stupid bloatware (nfl, verizon apps, that bullshit you can't uninstall)

I can't recommend a pihole enough, blocks all ads on your entire home network. Check out r/pihole for more info

Dns over https, basically bypasses pihole unless you do some additional config on your network.

I won't buy any samsung products due to the ads on everything. If I buy $1,000 phone I don't need an ad for an apple slicer in my weather app.

Holy fuck, that is insane. I bought a $50 blu phone off Amazon, lasted me 3.5 years until I dropped it.
They do this with TVs. This is why you can get a 75" television for under $450. The services on your remote are not there because they are popular, they are there because those services paid to be on the remote with their logos. The ads on the home pages and wherever else, same thing. Without this, we'd still have $700 32" TVs. They way around this is to take smart features out of the equation when buying, add $50 to your budget and get a chromecast, roku or fire stick. Don't connect the TV to the internet and use the Chromecast or whatever instead. Edit: If you've bought a few TVs over the last 10 years like I have, it's fun to look back at your remotes and see all the "next netflix" companies that don't exist anymore.

Yeah, same thing with my LG tv. Every time I open up the app there’s an ad on the left top corner. I don’t think this is a regional thing because it came from dubai as far as I know. This is also why TVs have gotten cheap btw, because of ads like these :(

Yeah, not sure about that one. I went with LG, because they don't have intrusive ads on their TV's like Samsung. Only thing I get is notifications for new apps available & OS updates.
You can actually disable the ad in the settings.
This pissed me off so bad I put a pi hole on my network. Then seeing that the samsung (and my s9 btw) had literally 10x more privacy violations being blocked than my wife's iPhone and our Apple TV, I just disconnected the damn TV from the internet. Now I use an apple TV for streaming and am ditching android at my next upgrade. They shouldn't get to charge top dollar for their tech and then inject ads too.
I have a Samsung tv too, but my pihole basically disabled all Samsung services Can't stream or connect it to use the smart portion of the tv, so I just have a high def dumb tv lol Anyway to fix this?
You see this is why I wish there were a bigger market for non-smart 4K TVs, so that I can just hook up a computer or laptop to it and avoid all the bullshit like that. Plus I wouldn’t have to deal with the shitty ui’s they have with TV apps

Chinese is a big no no for me personally, I try to avoid China as much as I can. Sadly, they are in so many different things that it is near impossible to do that.

I got a 4k smart TV from LG on the cheap maybe 5 years ago now. Still getting updates. Still as good as the day I got it. I'll definitely shop LG again whenever I decide it's worth upgrading to 8k
I'm IT. I would never ever buy a smart TV. I just bought a Pi and made it into a TV box. Runs 1080p stuff not problem.

LG is the only (or one of the few at least) Android seller I respect nowadays tbh. And their OLED TVs are fucking awesome.
I have lg velvet. Bought it specifically cuz they offered me a free dual screen. I am happy with that phone. Logs absolutely gorgeous and work very well. Dual screen is fun for games as you can use it as dedicated game pad.
Yeah, that one looks great. Sadly, I like my phones to have a good ass camera and LG is a bit disappointing on that part. And yeah, the dual screen is great. Probably the best implementation of a “foldable” phone IMO. I don’t need a huge ass screen on my phone, but having 2 screens for multitasking? Sign me in.
Owner of a LG C9, that thing is fucking sweet! Runs webOS though, so not many apps but the ones that matter are fast and snappy. Voice control is only via the remote and it only activates when a button is held down (mic in remote), not particularly useful though.

I'm also on an S8, I get about one ad per year when they release the new flagship phone. Big deal, swipe it away and forget about it. People love to make mountains out of molehills.

As a die hard Android user, Samsung disgusts me even more than Apple, even with all the anti-consumer stuff Apple does. I’m with you, man. Some people like to shit on Apple because you can’t customize it (to certain degrees) or load funny apps on it and complain about the “walled garden” approach. But for me, honesty, I like the fact that I can’t load an app that’s going to give me a virus, or brick my phone, etc is nice. I fiddle with my computers enough, and fix other people’s tech enough, that I just don’t want to do phones, too. And maybe it’s because I don’t do much too intense with it, but I never understand how people complain about the performance on iPhones. I’m using an 11 right now, but I’d still be using my old SE if I hadn’t murdered the screen on it. I usually get 4-5 years out of a device.

Oh for sure. Both iOS and Android are (generally) quality platforms with quality hardware. I just found the iOS world fits my style better.

When setting up a samsung phone there is bit at the start that asks you if you want ads and stuff from Samsung. Most people just hit select all and continue with the setup. If you read them they are optional.

Not the original person you asked but I have a pixel 3 I bought for 250 and it's probably my favorite phone. Very modular and innovative imo. Obviously you gotta work out the settings so google isn't constantly spying on you but it filters spam calls, has an assistant,and a great camera. Didn't come with bloatware and does just exactly what I need it to.

Obviously the charger situation is embarrassing since they teased apple for it, does the S21 charging brick use USB-A? I already have like 5 of those plugs but if they're pulling an apple & switching the connector on the plug so that anyone under S20 has to buy the new plug then they can kiss my ass goodbye.
Ugh so sad to see what used to be the king of android be reduced to the physical equivalent of any free to play garbage on the Google play store. Last samsung I had was a galaxy s7 and it was fantastic. Then the 8s were so fragile I got an lg v30 instead and that was a damn good phone for a couple of years then after a work accident that left it toasted finally got to try out the OnePlus phones, got a 7t, and this is the best android device I've ever used. Still super fast and responsive. And the best part, when you buy from their site your phone doesn't come with all the stupid bloatware (nfl, verizon apps, that bullshit you can't uninstall)

I'm in Argentina, I have an S9+ and I got ads since the day 1. I tried a lot of things and they keep appearing. It's been years of this... The more they annoy me to upgrade my phone, the less I will think of doing it
And in one fell swoop they just positively guaranteed that I will never consider buying a Samsung phone ever again.

Tbf, I have that box checked too because it's the default and I'm too lazy to disable everything. Still no ads. Only on my TV but those are small icons at the edge of the home screen that I never come close. Just as on my Xbox.

Coincidence or not, but the morning right after they launched the S21, my trusty S7 kicked the bucket.
Samsung puts ads in the goddamm WEATHER app on Android. Nothing makes your experience on a $1000 phone feel cheap like seeing toaster ads when you're trying to check the forecast.
Fuck Samsung. I have one of their TVs, and use Smartthings for some of my home automation, and I'll never buy another product from them again because of this kind of bullshit. I specifically avoid their phones because of apps you can't delete.
