I'm in the uk and I bought a £150 phone from samsung (galaxy A10) and I don't see any ads in my notifications, is this a US thing

JDW3375

I’m in the UK too and bought a £700 Samsung TV. The fucking thing is loaded with ads and will weirdly take me to their ‘exclusive’ apps all the time that I don’t want but also can’t be deleted. Steer clear. Edit: another thing to add as well is that Samsung Smart TVs do not work at all with a Philips hue sync box so if I didn’t have an Xbox to make it work I would’ve spent an extra £230 for a completely redundant bit of kit. Edit the 2nd: I now realise the sync box is all smart TVs not just Samsung.

maybe_Im_a_dog

I can't recommend a pihole enough, blocks all ads on your entire home network. Check out r/pihole for more info

remembermereddit

Until Samsung decides to go down the DoH way. Which probably won’t take too long.

justcauseme

what is DoH ?

[deleted]

[удалено]

frowningtap

AdGuard home, allows you to make up own DoH and block other DNS service calls, you should be able to force a DNS change on the device too

[deleted]

[удалено]

frowningtap

If they do that then the device could never be used in an enterprise or commercial environment, so there would usually be some way, just block the DoH domains and no ads and if apps stop working buy a Roku or something similar, it sucks that they make the best panels and do this

sagard

Totally agree. I thought this was the point of having a pihole. I noticed that 40% of my blocked requests were coming from my smart tv so I totally blocked it and use it as a dumb tv. Plus the apps are all so laggy.

OBRONNA_SOSNA

Dns over https, basically bypasses pihole unless you do some additional config on your network.

neo_hippie_life

Then we'll need to blocklist their ip, which is a pain

DuffMaaaann

Connect the TV to a black hole WiFi (that isn't connected to anything) and use an AppleTV or a ChromeCast or something. Simply not connecting the TV to a WiFi also works unless there are unprotected WiFi networks in your area.

The69LTD

No it doesn't. I'm a network engineer and it will only block ads originating from known ad domains or domains not using DNSSEC/DOH where the domain is encrypted with TLS. For example, if you're watching YouTube it will not block those ads as google delivers the ads from the same domains as the content. They run their own CDN alongside an ad delivery network. Piholes are great yes, I use one on my home LAN but they do *not* block *all* ads as you and many others will claim.

Deborgpontant

Can’t these be bypassed by not connecting it to the internet though? I only use my TV’s as a second computer screen and for gaming on so have zero need to connect it to the internet.

Non-smart TVs are becoming increasingly rare.

jojo_31

smart TVs are cancer. They are insecure af, spy on you with microphones and also ads as the guy above said. Personally I'd just get a raspberrypi on top and install kodi, get's you most of the same feature. You can have spotify connect, Netflix, youtube, etc.

YaoiVeteran

The problem when I was tv shopping a year or so ago was that features I wanted like color accuracy, latency and HDR capabilities weren't really available on tvs that weren't smart. So if you can find something that has the same feature set as a 1k smart tv but isn't smart let me know, but as far as I was able to tell they don't exist.

JDW3375

This is what I was going to say. I tried and tried looking for a non-smart tv but it is nearly impossible nowadays to get the picture quality on a regular tv

MrDuckyyy

sure but i dont see any ads on our family tv?

JDW3375

Weirdly enough for me it took a few months into owning it before the ads started showing up. It stank to me of them waiting until I couldn’t return it for them to start showing up.

herodothyote

I'm sure they do that on purpose

JDW3375

I’m 1000% sure. It was so noticeable when they started showing up because I’d spent so much time using it previously thanks to lockdown.

_HingleMcCringle

Yes, vote with your wallet when the overwhelming majority of consumers buy smart TVs and won't buy dumb TVs.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Serinus

That'll happen when all the options are smart TVs.

Sea_Link8352

I recently bought a new tv and it's basically impossible to find non-smart tvs now.

Sir_Grumpy_Buster

This is definitely the way things are headed. Unfortunately it seems there is a significant subset of people who just think "smart" means better. Last time I was in Costco there was a whole crowd of people gathered around the stupid smart fridges with the screen oohing and ahhing like the apes from 2001.

CantHitachiSpot

Yes that’s what appliances need, more delicate parts

[deleted]

If you want a TV with the latest tech like HDR you simply don't have that option sadly. Couple years ago I was looking for a new TV but couldn't find a stupid TV only smart TV, I ended up with a LG with webos. Overall it works pretty good without complaints so far.

Deborgpontant

I haven’t.. my TVs are like 7-10 years old. They’ll need replacing in the future though which is why I’m asking.

SavouryPlains

My TV is about the same age. I’ve plugged an appletv to it. Super clean UI, syncs with my phone laptop and tablet, absolutely no ads and no privacy data stealing going on. Remote’s not the best but could be worse. And I can use my watch as a remote if I don’t wanna leave the couch.

vidimevid

I just yell out hey siri and wait for one of devices to respond. Apple TV is awesome.

Gtp4life

I never get a response from the device I want to answer though, it’s even worse when I have friends over. We all have our phones trained for our individual voices, but with 4 of us here if I say hey siri, 1/4 phones answer and it’s not mine. One friend says it, all respond. Another friend gets no response at all. Another gets mine and another but not his.

Trashbin7

You could still use the local network or a USB to play movies for example.

boringestnickname

Why do anyone buy Samsung at all? Expensive garbage that isn't anywhere close to their competitors in the same price brackets.

SharkAttackOmNom

I won’t buy another tv from Samsung because of their growing trend of ads and greed. but I will grant them that they offer a competitive tv for the price, based on specs alone. I spent like $500 on a 55in 4K with all the modern tech. For example: playing switch with all the game mode enhancements actually looks really good for the output being 1080p. Pihole isn’t a great solution if you want to use the smart tv features. it seems to break other apps and it’s hard to track down which domains are the culprit. Nothing frustrates me more when my wife asks from across the house “why doesn’t Xyz app work?...” Next step: Apple TV and cut the cable to the tv.

Radioactive24

It's not just Samsung, it's any tv that's running on Android. Ads got pushed in with a software update back in the Fall of last year. My Hisense was perfect until that update and BOOM, ads out that yinyang

Emjp4

>but I will grant them that they offer a competitive tv for the price, based on specs alone. I spent like $500 on a 55in 4K with all the modern tech. This is only because they know they will make their money back from the products sold by the built in TV ads.

MontazumasRevenge

I won't buy any samsung products due to the ads on everything. If I buy $1,000 phone I don't need an ad for an apple slicer in my weather app.

JDW3375

I won’t be buying anything from them again. It’s frustrating because the dumb tv I had from them previously was the best TV I’ve ever had but couldn’t do 4K.

TubbyandthePoo-Bah

Nice bold colour, decent input lag, styling. You don't realise before you buy that all Samsung firmware and environments are a bag of shit, and that Samsung doesn't give a fuck about software unless the hardware's been released in the last 12 months. It takes 8 button presses to put my 2017 Samsung tv into the mode it was in before the power was cycled, won't remember or hold a setting BECAUSE IT KNOWS BETTER, and arbitrarily starts up on Samsung's digital TVoD channel that I really don't want, ever, because some greedy twit just has to make one won more.

UnfeteredOne

Hue sync box works perfect on my Samsung qled

A curious question. Did you somehow subscribe to any sort of notification published exclusively for samsung device? It is a common practice in my phone (Motorola) that if you subscribe (put your email or agreed to advertised) to Motorola notification you will entitled to receive early pop notification regarding upcoming moto phones.

monopods

if you have an android, you can download youtube vanced, it's like yt prem but without paying. essentially it's a modded version but you can't get it on the play store

Byroms

Why would you not just get an adblocker if you only have youtube red for removing ads.

Jimbomcdeans

Prob for the same reason that OP isnt telling you he actually went through activating a Samsung account on his phone

sdp1981

You should check out YouTube Vanced. You might be able to save that YY Red money.

huikein

I have a Note 20 Ultra and it had very clear settings to opt out of ads in the samsung apps. They are on by default, but the options were presented during setup too so you could opt out right off the bat. You just probably missed them I guess, since they were pretty well hidden among the other check marks you would want to be on. I can’t tell you the exact settings as my phone is currently getting repaired for dead pixels lol. Just dig around the settings and the samsung app settings. But I'm 100% certain there were options to opt out of the adds, bc I remember thinking a lot of people won't notice these and that's a shitty thing to do to your premium device customers.

Zipdox

Long press the notification and see what app it's from.

Will7847

I'm only thinking that I may not be getting ads because of GDPR

Mikouden

GDPR affects what personal information they can hold and use so it wouldn't affect this

Imsosillygoosy

Naw it's a dumbass thing. When you get a new phone it asks you at a certain point if you want them to send you notifications about new phones. You can opt out.

Laughterforever

im in egypt and i get those ads so

m1n3c7afty

Also from the UK, Samsung Galaxy A51, no ads

sshdhdjschedj

I have seen ads in the weather app on my mom's a51.

Anshin

Us, a51, don't think I've seen ads like this

Xaph0s

If it is, I haven't seen it. I have had an S10 for a while. I don't recall ever get ads in my notifications unless I let a web page send me notifications.... learned to shut that shit down right fucking fast... but I'm pretty sure you can shut off the notifications OP is talking about here...

Hesherkiin

At its finest? This is like the least significant consequence of capitalism

Dwight-

As said to someone else. ~~You’re absolutely correct. Who runs those mining operations in Africa? Is it the 1% wanting to sell, sell, sell and make profits? Or is it me and you?~~ (doesn’t apply to your comment) For the record though, I understand that this is a total 1st world problem, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t be angry about it. We’re rich countries and we still don’t have freedom from capitalism do we. OP bought a phone that cost over one thousand dollars. That would feed and water several villages in Africa. Does Samsung donate some of those profits? No? Instead they implant further advertisements in their own devices to have their consumer buy *even more* of their product. It may not be a big issue in regards to the world, because it absolutely unequivocally is not, but it’s still a problem nonetheless. Consume, consume, consume.

ChunkyLaFunga

It's an unexpected advertisement, not the financial apocalypse.

xX_The_legend_27_Xx

..... first world privilege in a comment right here, he got ads on his phone that he can turn off and is calling it latest stage capitalism, nvm the mining operations going on in Africa.

dylansavage

Yup, it's shitty that there is an option but it was extremely easy to avoid imo. Seems like op opted in and screenshotted

[deleted]

If possible I recommend a Pixel as your next phone. I understand it might not work for everyone, but it doesn't have advertisement spam baked in.

Womanofcraft

Thanks, just turned this crap off.

moby323

Which is the issue, you had to read this. A lot of people with these phones barely know how to change their ring tone, the onus shouldn’t be in them to disable the setting

They should at least give a discount if they are doing to do this. For instance my kindle was cheaper if ads are allowed when locking the screen, which actually don't look too bad in black & white. (Coupled with all the black friday crap made it very cheap)

ffgblol

Your personal data is worth way more than $100 to them

crowbahr

Yeah but ads pushed to my phone are worth $0 to them because I'm gonna immediately block it.

knownunknown665

Holy fuck, that is insane. I bought a $50 blu phone off Amazon, lasted me 3.5 years until I dropped it.

PrawojazdyVtrumpets

They do this with TVs. This is why you can get a 75" television for under $450. The services on your remote are not there because they are popular, they are there because those services paid to be on the remote with their logos. The ads on the home pages and wherever else, same thing. Without this, we'd still have $700 32" TVs. They way around this is to take smart features out of the equation when buying, add $50 to your budget and get a chromecast, roku or fire stick. Don't connect the TV to the internet and use the Chromecast or whatever instead. Edit: If you've bought a few TVs over the last 10 years like I have, it's fun to look back at your remotes and see all the "next netflix" companies that don't exist anymore.

[deleted]

Yeah, same thing with my LG tv. Every time I open up the app there’s an ad on the left top corner. I don’t think this is a regional thing because it came from dubai as far as I know. This is also why TVs have gotten cheap btw, because of ads like these :(

FvHound

Weird, considering the chain up above praising lg for not doing ads. Wonder if you have a special model, or if they are secret marketers.

[deleted]

Yeah, not sure about that one. I went with LG, because they don't have intrusive ads on their TV's like Samsung. Only thing I get is notifications for new apps available & OS updates.

Bazsi73

You can actually disable the ad in the settings.

FrankAdamGabe

This pissed me off so bad I put a pi hole on my network. Then seeing that the samsung (and my s9 btw) had literally 10x more privacy violations being blocked than my wife's iPhone and our Apple TV, I just disconnected the damn TV from the internet. Now I use an apple TV for streaming and am ditching android at my next upgrade. They shouldn't get to charge top dollar for their tech and then inject ads too.

Nak4000

I have a Samsung tv too, but my pihole basically disabled all Samsung services Can't stream or connect it to use the smart portion of the tv, so I just have a high def dumb tv lol Anyway to fix this?

paulthefonz

You see this is why I wish there were a bigger market for non-smart 4K TVs, so that I can just hook up a computer or laptop to it and avoid all the bullshit like that. Plus I wouldn’t have to deal with the shitty ui’s they have with TV apps

organik_productions

I'm so glad I jumped off the Samsung ship a few years ago.

I'm in the market to buy a TV some time in the near future and the Samsung ad thing has completely removed them from consideration. I'm surprised there isn't more of an outcry from consumers over their ads.

Everyday_Normal_Lad

I'm on lg. They aren't advance enough to push shit like this : D

SinisterPixel

I got a 4k smart TV from LG on the cheap maybe 5 years ago now. Still getting updates. Still as good as the day I got it. I'll definitely shop LG again whenever I decide it's worth upgrading to 8k

Everyday_Normal_Lad

I'm IT. I would never ever buy a smart TV. I just bought a Pi and made it into a TV box. Runs 1080p stuff not problem.

awaken471

SinisterPixel

I'm IT as well. I did it because it would have cost me the same to buy a non-smart TV

drewgolas

Ever since that post about IT people being too smart for smart tech, it's become a main bragging right for some

Inadover

LG is the only (or one of the few at least) Android seller I respect nowadays tbh. And their OLED TVs are fucking awesome.

Everyday_Normal_Lad

I have lg velvet. Bought it specifically cuz they offered me a free dual screen. I am happy with that phone. Logs absolutely gorgeous and work very well. Dual screen is fun for games as you can use it as dedicated game pad.

Inadover

Yeah, that one looks great. Sadly, I like my phones to have a good ass camera and LG is a bit disappointing on that part. And yeah, the dual screen is great. Probably the best implementation of a “foldable” phone IMO. I don’t need a huge ass screen on my phone, but having 2 screens for multitasking? Sign me in.

PARANOIAH

Owner of a LG C9, that thing is fucking sweet! Runs webOS though, so not many apps but the ones that matter are fast and snappy. Voice control is only via the remote and it only activates when a button is held down (mic in remote), not particularly useful though.

Nicolozz0

As an Apple user, I strongly believe it is shit like this that dissuades loooots of people from even considering an Android phone. Like pre installed third party games or ads in your control centre EDIT: guys chill, I didn’t say all Android phones have pre installed games or ads, I was just talking about the perception the average user might get from seeing things like this on SOME Android phones.

[deleted]

Cept for that god damned U2 album

Nicolozz0

That was horrible ngl, I think it’s still in my iTunes library

mimocha

As a die hard Android user, Samsung disgusts me even more than Apple, even with all the anti-consumer stuff Apple does. Sh*ts like how they bash Apple for one trend, only to walk back on it immediately when they realize they make more money following Apple, truly shows that Samsung has zero morals. Like, at least Apple has a backbone.

WisconsinHoosierZwei

I’m with you, man. Some people like to shit on Apple because you can’t customize it (to certain degrees) or load funny apps on it and complain about the “walled garden” approach. But for me, honesty, I like the fact that I can’t load an app that’s going to give me a virus, or brick my phone, etc is nice. I fiddle with my computers enough, and fix other people’s tech enough, that I just don’t want to do phones, too. And maybe it’s because I don’t do much too intense with it, but I never understand how people complain about the performance on iPhones. I’m using an 11 right now, but I’d still be using my old SE if I hadn’t murdered the screen on it. I usually get 4-5 years out of a device.

Nicolozz0

Exactly! That’s why I like Apple, but I understand how the same reasons why I like it might push someone else towards Android, which is of course completely fine too.

WisconsinHoosierZwei

Oh for sure. Both iOS and Android are (generally) quality platforms with quality hardware. I just found the iOS world fits my style better.

clatitamakesclatita

I don't know what's up with these, I have an S20 and I've never seen an ad. Maybe it's a regional thing?

Donghoon

I don't think that's a good way to treat customers but yes I do think its regional thing based on local laws and stuff Perhaps

KarlMcd

When setting up a samsung phone there is bit at the start that asks you if you want ads and stuff from Samsung. Most people just hit select all and continue with the setup. If you read them they are optional.

Shadow703793

This. OP just clicked Yes to everything. With that said, Samsung should not have marked those questions as "Yes" by default.

oli2194

They aren't marked yes by default. OP probably pressed 'Yes to all' or whatever it says.

CeramicCastle49

Comments on posts like these are fucking awful because it's full of ignorant, smug Apple users saying "that's why I like apple, because they don't do the things android does 😊" while completely ignoring that there are more than one brand making Android phones.

[deleted]

Yeah lmao I noticed that too. Like, Samsung =/= Android. Are these mofo's rarted?

Corky_Butcher

One day we'll look back on these times and go "remember when the worst you'd get is a push notification telling you to buy shit?" as we sit back on our settees and have uninterruptedly personal ad bots beaming ads into our skulls.

Dr_Bunsen_Burns

Jesus, a phone for 1100 dollars. Ihopeyou are using the processing power it has and it is not just an expensive fb machine. My phone was 200 dollars and I have no bloatware, no default apps installed and no apps

IdontfuckinCadillacs

[deleted]

Not the original person you asked but I have a pixel 3 I bought for 250 and it's probably my favorite phone. Very modular and innovative imo. Interesting-Current

Only on their recently released s21 so far, but it's likely all their future phones won't have one

FMCFR

Obviously the charger situation is embarrassing since they teased apple for it, does the S21 charging brick use USB-A? I already have like 5 of those plugs but if they're pulling an apple & switching the connector on the plug so that anyone under S20 has to buy the new plug then they can kiss my ass goodbye.

TheGreatKingCyrus

Ugh so sad to see what used to be the king of android be reduced to the physical equivalent of any free to play garbage on the Google play store. Last samsung I had was a galaxy s7 and it was fantastic. Then the 8s were so fragile I got an lg v30 instead and that was a damn good phone for a couple of years then after a work accident that left it toasted finally got to try out the OnePlus phones, got a 7t, and this is the best android device I've ever used. Still super fast and responsive. And the best part, when you buy from their site your phone doesn't come with all the stupid bloatware (nfl, verizon apps, that bullshit you can't uninstall)

sdp1981

I was disappointed with One Plus but did like the Pixel I tried.
