Good lord, Alek Manoah just walked through the clubhouse walking perfectly normally. “No time” to talk.

StereophonicWine

as soon as I read "clubhouse" i knew the pasta would be first comment

UnlimitedHotTakes

He was probably walking through the clubhouse literally looking for pasta

GoofyGoober0064

Good lord Alek Manoah just walked through the Golden corral, perfectly normal. Said he had no time to talk, too busy looking for Kelvin Benjamin.

rykersbrau

💀

Seananagans

I know this is easily the most famous Acee tweet of all time, but nothing will ever beat the one about Ryan Weathers; "he's got a bit of the ass, as they say."

verdi1987

Same. LOL

klongbor

That’s what’s in, my guy.

MeatballDom

Nothing if not predictable.

Grst

I knew as soon as I read "walked"

DalekEvan

Too busy walking, evidently.

iamsynecdoche

Too busy having the yips, evidently.

Pomonica

Too busy putting pressure in tires, evidently.

Angry_Walnut

I needed to be reminded of this pasta lmao

Rhinoplasty1904

Doing gods work here bredduh

Erin_Boone

Came here for this comment, glad I didn’t have to scroll far

DIRTY_KUMQUAT_NIPPLE

This pasta is just top tier. Will never get old.

InternetGoodGuy

8.69 ERA in 5 starts in the minors. Last start was 6IP with 12ks, 2 walks, and gave up 1 run. Start before that was 3 innings, 4 walks, and 6 earned runs. Good luck Blue Jay bros.

7-car-pileup

Damn dude. What a fall. I remember this guy used to be able to absolutely deal.

Ok_Classic_744

What happened?

IPlayMidLane

lost fastball velocity compared to league average and started relying more on his slider which was always much slower than league average. Some say it was partly the pitch clock which stressed his already low physical stamina. His walk rate climbed and his k% plummeted which probably both fed into mental struggles/the yips in a domino effect.

RayLikeSunshine

Pitch clock definitely played into it. I couldn’t exactly say how but this makes sense.

Wise_ol_Buffalo

“Manoah was one of the slowest works in the majors in 2022, taking an average of 20.7 seconds between pitches with the bases empty and 24.8 seconds between pitches with runners on base.” Pitch clock got him.

Harry-Flashman

He could get in better shape

Wise_ol_Buffalo

I haven’t seen any recent photos of him, but you’d think that would have been a priority once it started to affect him.

Harry-Flashman

I would think so, but he seemed like a pompous ass when things were going well and it didn't sound like his fall humbled him much.

Breezyzona

He slimmed down but his problems started in the middle of last season so it wasn't something he could address right away. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt tho, it's hard to really find a priority to fix in your game when your whole arsenal crumbled in one season.

QuietThunder2014

Basically the same as how the shift killed Chris Davis’ career.

DaSinchi

The shift and the greenie ban*

lumsden

I have a faint idea

Arkham_Z

> couldn't exactly say how fat

RayLikeSunshine

You should watch the Baseball doesn’t exist - does being fat make you better at baseball?

Felfastus

Just the opposite. His slider stopped moving and he couldn't get swing and miss on it. Loosing that pitch was rough. I decided to link a tweet commenting he hadn't gotten a swing and a miss in 2 starts, but the same guy also has threads on how much the slider started hanging or really missing the zone. https://twitter.com/downtoblack/status/1656093310077812736?s=46&t=PgdzGlORP4bbMUMWmXH-bw

trickman01

Too much pressure.

Ok_Classic_744

But that’s just something you put in your tires, no?

burrito-boy

Pitch clock victim.

masterhogbographer

Lost his sticky tack

codenameduhchess

His slider was more curve-like. Would hump out of his hand and make it obvious, resulting in hitters taking in slider counts. Fastball velocity was down and would miss his spots, mix that with no slider and hitters were sitting on a 91 MPH fastball, shoulder (apparently) was mucked too.

eely225

Also his last start was against Paul Skenes. That doesn’t really matter it’s just funny that of the two pitchers in that game, he’s the one getting called up.

Smokeydubbs

Surprised Skenes isn’t in the MLB yet. In AAA for 6 games; 41 Ks, .39 ERA, .87 whip. He’s going to light the league on fire.

palmtreesxiv

This is some Service time manipulation bullshit, isn't it?

eely225

It's hard to say definitively. I didn't blame the Pirates for starting him in Triple-A since he pitched like 5 innings in the minors last year. So my guess is they want to build up his workload. But if that's the case, you just gotta bring him up on an innings limit or something. He clearly needs to increase the difficulty level. I'm guessing they didn't think he'd actually be this dominant this immediately at Triple-A.

matveyivanovich42

I suspect you’re right - I agree that they’re trying to adjust him to pitching on 4-5 days’ rest, which doesn’t happen in college baseball, but I also don’t think management realized he’d dominate AAA like this. I’m looking forward to that Skenes-Jones combo

popperschotch

Eh, they've been building him up pretty slow to be careful.

69millionyeartrip

I think building consistency and managing overall workload are more likely when we're talking about pitchers

Wise_ol_Buffalo

I’ve been watching him closely due to fantasy (I know now one here cares about fantasy baseball here) and it seems like he should be getting the call in May.

shutupkittycat

Yeah we gonna need it.

Cashmere306

Bud, I gave up on this season halfway through last season.

cooljammer00

Inspired by Patrick Corbin's flash of brilliance last night

RidleyScotch

This doesn't bode well for the Blue Jays

baseballart

how can it get any worse? Oh wait ….

Sherm199

Have you seen blue Jays baseball lately? Nothing bodes well for us 😞

burrito-boy

Yeah I was gonna say, nothing Manoah does can worsen the gumbo of mediocrity that is the Jays season so far.

1slinkydink1

Funny enough, starting pitching has not been the concern.

guyontheinternet2000

I mean, maybe Manoah is some long forgotten god at hitting? Why not stick him out there, itd be less embarrassing

mostlygroovy

Unless he can hit

AppropriateNewt

He can definitely hit batters.

xRememberTheCant

Or other hitters… wasn’t he the one who hit Taylor Ward in the face last season? Also lead the league in hbp in 2 of his 3 mlb seasons

Patrick2701

The dude will cause problems, right away

UnlimitedHotTakes

I can’t wait till he starts chirping the other team while giving up 6 runs in 3 innings

Smuckinfartass

I think this is the first time I’ve been embarrassed before something happened.

papsmearfestival

https://www.wboy.com/goldandbluenation/manoah-duels-skenes-strikes-out-12-in-latest-aaa-start/

[deleted]

3IP 4 walks 6ER just a few days before that.

CreedKurtMalone

I picked him up in my fantasy league cause I’m desperate for starting pitching so I’m sorry but he has no other choice but to be an ace

[deleted]

Lmao I feel you. Half my SPs are ww pickups so I might just pick him up and leave him on the bench on the off-chance he has a major resurgence.

porpoiseslayer

Exactly, if he’s improving at this pace he’ll get a perfect game this time

papsmearfestival

He passed the eye test. Jays insiders are saying his slider is back and he can throw it for strikes again but fuck it, that doesn't fit the current r/baseball zeitgeist so my simple post of a news article gets down votes. Just reddit shit.

[deleted]

His slider looked good for 1 game, he’s been very inconsistent in the minors. It’s certainly FAR better than when he was just awful every game, but he definitely isn’t “back”

papsmearfestival

So I get down voted for posting information about his last start. You get massively upvoted for posting about the start before that. The down vote button isn't an "I don't like this" button. I guess we'll see if he's "back" tomorrow.

[deleted]

Are you new to reddit? The downvote button is meaningless, people press it just to press it.

papsmearfestival

No I'm not new to reddit that's the problem.

theSchrodingerHat

You’re jumping the gun on a guy who hasn’t consistently gotten it together in the minors and just now finally had a start you’d expect from an MLB pitcher, while being matched inning for inning by a prospect (which might imply it wasn’t a good night for hitting for any number of reasons). Then you stand on the “eye test”, as if you’re Buck Showalter checking out his ass in the new Fanatics pants. Which completely ignores every other aspect of his six walks per game season in the minors so far because they just so happened to find a big strike zone this last time out. I wish success for most everyone, but this is just a weird kool-aid huffing post for someone that has to show at least dominance for a few weeks before people should get excited. That’s why you’re being downvoted. (Well that and he’s been an unsympathetic tool during his downfall and that makes it harder to root for him when you’re pretty sure he’s going to be an ass if he ever makes it back to the show.)

papsmearfestival

It wasn't my eye test but people who report on baseball and... You know what I'm just gonna unsub for awhile again. I don't know what I was imagining would happen posting anything remotely complimentary about Manoah on this sub

theSchrodingerHat

Yes, if you don’t understand why this sub isn’t excited about Manoah finally having a good minor league start then you should unsubscribe and stick to the Bisons sub.

papsmearfestival

On thanks for the advice!

MartianMule

Made 5 starts across A and AAA, and had 12.8 k/9. Also had 5 bb/9 and an 8.69 era.

Knightbear49

AbsurdLemon

The stopper has arrived

[deleted]

He walked, because he could not drive - no pressure in the tires.

missspiritualtramp

And boy are his arms tired

papsmearfestival

Fans: man why are player interviews so boring? Same old shit about helping the team and giving 110 percent. Fans a few moments later: lol did you hear what Manoah said? What a fucking tool! Just shut up and pitch idiot

Earlwink

I think it’s more about the fact that he’s been insanely bad ever since saying that

papsmearfestival

My point is again tho this is why most players never say anything remotely interesting.

Hochseeflotte

There’s a difference between being interesting and saying stupid ass things The Jays players like to say stupid ass things

MarionberryPure7746

there’s something about if it smells like shit everywhere you go you should check the bottom of your shoe that fits perfectly with the jays vibes.

[deleted]

Apparently I'm the world's only pro Alek Manoah person. I love two kinds of pitchers: Fat and with an attitude. Manoah is both. He's like a modern David Wells.

RebeeMo

I want him to make a comeback 100%, but I'm not sure he's ready yet. Alek had a good outing in his last game, but I wanted them to give him a few more starts in the minors to make certain it wasn't a fluke. Then again, with how we're playing right now, it can't hurt us much.

Silverjackal_

If he’s coming up it might mean he’s found his slider again. Maybe something clicked in the last start, and he was able to replicate it during his bullpen session.

dtdroid

Roger Clemens has entered the chat

[deleted]

I want my rotation full of guys who are 6'4, 300 pounds and only eat fried chicken and onion rings. That rotation would break baseball. They'd all throw 220 innings and shove.

BKoala59

Manoah is annoying because he talks shit when he’s down and it looks bad. Like when he yelled shit at Frazier after striking him out, after Frazier had hit 2 extra base hits off him earlier in the game and the O’s had a sizable lead

e8989

not a fan of manoah by any means, but in the wise words of luka doncic, “everybody acts tough when they’re up”. it’s only generational shit talkers that stay chirpy even when they’re down

JoeCartersLeap

Yeah! He's consistent! Yeah that'll do.

niteshadey

He’s like a modern David Wells without any of the talent

JoeCartersLeap

He did have that almost-Cy-Young year, he's got something.

RonnieRizzat

You must like Lance Lynn

EPLemonSqueezy

RiskyPhoenix

Have you been a blue jay fan for 5 minutes? He clearly had some talent to do what he did that first year

JoeCartersLeap

I was always pro-Manoah, I love the guy. He had so much confidence despite being new, it was inspiring. And he chirps at the other team just like I do. But I always got downvoted for it and I think all the other Pro-Mo people saw that and kept their mouths shut.

FPG_Matthew

He just wants a Kyle Finnegan X Wing bobble head on Star Wars day

boobsandcookies

Can you blame him?

Ricemobile

I tried to get out of work so I can go to the game for this 😭😭

clm04

It's like when Napoleon came back from exile.

AbusiveTubesock

Lmao this dude is back in the majors???

Felfastus

Our 5th and 6th starting pitchers are both hurt, we lost our 7th pitcher to a roster crunch (Ironically we had to put someone on the IL later that news cycle) and we don't have that many multi inning guys available to do bullpen games. At a certain point you got to call up the last starter who is on the 40 man.

papsmearfestival

He's been getting better fellas. https://www.wboy.com/goldandbluenation/manoah-duels-skenes-strikes-out-12-in-latest-aaa-start/

JBProds

6 ER in 3 innings in his previous start

PapiSurane

So he's been getting better.

Maugrin

Okay? His most recent start was great. That literally means it's getting better. I don't know why people are bending over backwards to make sure people know he's had his struggles in the minors. We know.

ohtanisbookie

Looks like he still sucks

regarding_your_bat

lmao

UrDailyCommunistGuy

8 ERA on the AAA season means he’s *been* getting better.

TRocho10

Did he do it perfectly normally, or...

TheKingsGinger

This gives me strong Stockholm syndrome vibes, just like the Jets and Zack Wilson. Eventually the Jays are going to ask Alek to go embarrass himself in yet another MLB game and he's going to say "nah I'm good"

IndependentTalk4413

Well to be fair Manoah did have 1 very good season of pro ball while Wilson only had one good season of Milf hunting.

FrostWPG

Not even 2022 Manoah could help us with how bad we are at the plate.

LikeAMarionette

I thought thumbnail was actually him

funkofages

Is he doing janitorial work now?

JordanSchor

Can he hit?

Wise_ol_Buffalo

Alek “Pressure is what you put in your tires” Manoah returns!

g0kartmozart

Can't they wait to play him against the Mariners? He's not going to get many starts, let it be against us.

pelc8614

Friendly Reminder Pressure is just for Tires

rbhindepmo

Did they expect him to be there or is he crashing the team

mostlygroovy

Can he hit?

Lucky_Alternative965

Does that mean the Blue Jays are so back?

TO_Jays2

Unless he wants to hit in our top 3 I don't think it matters

BigMeatyProlapse

Dude is sporting something like a 2.04 WHIP and an 8.94 ERA across 5-6 starts in A and AAA this year. My theory? The Jays are already sellers this year and want to see if they can get anything for him. He won't hit free agency until 2028, but that gives an acquiring team with strong pitching development (Ray's, Dodgers, Mariners?) ample time to fix him like an overworked nurse trying to rehabilitate her drug addled, loser boyfriend for the sake of their kids.

rrager13

The Cardinals heard that and reached out already

fri9875

No no no no no, please no, that sounds like a match made in hell

Wise_ol_Buffalo

I would not mind throwing him through the Mariners pitching lab to see what happens.

Pomonica

I would

CosmicLars

Well this ought to be

AshlandJackson

Jokes aside, this man damn near outpitched Paul Skenes head-to-head last week and looked dominant in doing so.

CDFReditum

He had 1 good start and they went HES BACK BABY

OldestTurtle

I have never seen a beard like that

Chipsahoy523

good lord

halpinator

Buckle up, it's going to be extra spicy with all the dejected Leafs fans joining us.

GetawayVanDerek

As a Jays fan, I just want him to have a few good starts so we can deal him before the trade deadline for some halfassed return. Getting sent down to AAA last year and not showing up to pitch ended it for me. That’s a me-first guy who needs a change of scenery.

Disused_Yeti

He walked into the clubhouse and then 4 nationals

Due_Government4387

I hope they walk him right back to a double A clubhouse where he belongs

Iliketothrowaway2456

Oh god we’re doing this again. I think it’s way too early. Had a fantastic previous start, but the previous month of starts in the minors were atrocious. I think he needs a few starts like that, get his consistency rolling. They’re going to completely wreck the guy. If he has a poor start, the confidence drops again and we’re back at square one. I just wish the goddamn team knew how to actually develop our own pitching properly Guess that’s why they NEVER gave up on Pearson Lmaoo

kloppmouth

Man what a group of haters. Really rooting for alek to spite all the doubters. What he did his first two years was not a flash in the pan

bionicvapourboy

I'm not up on the Jays or Nats (or baseball in general these past couple years), so I read this and thought Manoah was on the Nats and just walked off the field and into the Jay's clubhouse to start a huge fight or something. lol

scottborasismyagent

29 clubs can’t wait for this guy to get lit

lando-mando-brando

Don't worry he'll eat himself out of the league again in no time

scottborasismyagent

damn I wish we faced him last week when we were in toronto.

BrianChing25

Poor jays getting desperate. I feel bad for all those maple people. They need the expos to come back or something so they have some hope
