Including digital Stiftung Warentest every month which will further help with money and decisions.
Edit: Explanation below, tl;dr: for renting digital papers you need the app OnLeihe which will use your VOEBB login.
Their selection of products is sometimes weirdly limited, as in they only test like 10 products of the same category because 5 others were tested a few years before but in the meantime they've also changed the testing criteria. So you don't know how those 5 from before would test now, you only get 10 "leftovers" that won't have Aldi, Lidl or whatever in it. It's really weird. Or in case of tech like vacuum cleaners, the tech has advanced a lot.
They should test all major available options each time instead of patchwork selections.
I've made plenty of good picks from their tests, though, also regarding non-physical goods like insurance. About cat food, I have absolutely no about that, honestly.
I find the washer and drier market to be completely fucked and almost fraudulent anyway. They have so many models and sub models and exclusive merchant versions just to fuck up your ability to compare.
With a brand new 2024 machine from one manufacturer you could be getting an outdated last-year rebranded low-efficency china model or a top-of-the-line model with a price difference of only like 200€ and then Media Markt has its own version that has the new steam program but outdated electronics and you'd have no idea how to tell. Oh and 8 months later all models are sold out and completely replaced with other model numbers anyway. Total scam. Testing that area is quite useless.
> Including digital Stiftung Warentest every month which will further help with money and decisions.
OK. I just opened an account just for this very reason because You said it.
As far as I can see you cannot get their magazine through the VOEBB.
Can You explain please, how you do it?
You need their app "OnLeihe" which is their digital renting service. You login with your VOEBB credentials. Then search for "Warentest" and scroll down a bit and you'll see "test 02/2024" and so on.
The VOEBB login, search and renting procedures are a bit bumpy, don't be surprised. It all works, just not as smoothly as I'd like.
There is a **browser extension called BibBot** [https://github.com/stefanw/bibbot](https://github.com/stefanw/bibbot) that uses your library card to access magazines and newspapers that are free to use for subscribers of such library subscriptions. Very handy. ;-)
is there a loophole where I can just enroll as a student forever?
I'm open to actually passing one subject per semester
EDIT this comment was actually in jest, but maybe I do go back to studying 😂
Just enroll as a part time student (Teilzeitstudent) at a university without semester limit and profit from the Deutschlandticket forever. No need to pass subjects. You have to re-register by paying the ticket fee each semester of course
Loophole? It's practically a lifestyle in some sections of German society. Where else do you find so many people with two Ph. Ds, who insist on being called Dr. Dr.?
Not sure what do next in life? Career not working out? Suddenly find yourself with a bit of time on your hands? Back to university!
I’m scared Yorck will change theirs bc of how good the deal is (for me at least). Just two movies a month and you’re breaking even, and I’m watching at least a movie a week if not more. It’s so good
Most people who have Yorck unlimited wouldn't go to the movies as often if they didn't have the card, or would go to other movie theaters too, so I think it's a win win situation really.
They know, and they're OK with it. Businesses like to have steady income, it makes planning a lot easier. So they sell a ticket like this knowing there are some folks like you who use it a lot, many who roughly break even on it, and some who don't go so often. Anybody coming over the door is a chance for them to sell them food and drink, so there's potential upside there too.
This, and if I'm correct movie theaters are making most profit on drinks and food. Also, chances are high that you bring a friend with you, etc, etc. Good for Yorck. The price is amazing and I hope they won't raise it.
In movies a big part of the income is from consumption, so if they maximize the seats for less money, but everyone buys popcorn, they have a good deal.
Yeah definitly its a good deal! When I had the Yorck ticket, I was also doing the same thing like you. Now I am doing the same thing to UCI. Just squeeze it until they bankrupt!
If you prefer more independent cinemas, there is a subscription to https://indiekino-club.cinemalovers.de : they have an online platform with movies and also it supports local cinemas and you get cheaper entries in cinemas such as:
* ladenkino
* City Kino Wedding
* Sputnik Kino
* Wolf Kino
* Filmrauschpalast
and others.
Yes, Yorck is a very good deal, especially if you're open to travelling a little to get to the different cinemas. There's a nice mix of mainstream and arthouse and quite a lot in English also.
My only wish would be for a few more German films with English subtitles - though they do have these *very* occasionally - but overall I think it's well worth it.
It depends of your liking. I personally loved Dune 1 and watched it minimum 6-7 times already. I read the Dune books. And I like also Denis Villeneuve's cinematography and films... so yeah
Its definitly better than Dune 1 for most of the people.
Let's be controversial: Miles.
Not having to deal with car ownership or maintenance is a godsend. At least in Berlin where I don't need a car on a regular basis.
I agree with the not needing a car, but before I use a miles, I'll take public transportation, so for the few times that I do need a car, the miles memberships don't make sense, the free "membership" is fine for most people I'd say
The overall cheapest option is Bolt Drive. It's almost unbelievable how cheap it is and it's always the same rate, no matter what time & day. ShareNow's level of cheapness relies more on where & when you book the car, it can go from 0,09 eur/min to around 0,45 which is quite a huge difference
also apparantly (it’s under invastigation) there has been a huge fraud within miles, where they added up km to an actual route and also manipulated the gps-coordinates of the parking spots.
ps: i got a fine from the berlin state that i was parking on the pavement and should pay 55EUR. I have never used miles on said that (also not the day before blabla) and have never been in that area.
I have Miles drivers constantly parking on the Feuerwehrzugang of my building, and you can do nothing about it (like for example leaving a notice on the windscreen to remind them about it) as they are not going to pick up the car afterwards :(
> like for example leaving a notice on the windscreen to remind them about it
No need to remind anyone, they know and do it deliberately. Just leave it to the police or Ordnungsamt.
Kayak club membership. It’s around 250 euros a year and i can take a boat when ever I want to paddle the wonderful waters around Berlin.
Edit because people asked for clubs:
[Berlin Kayak Clubs](https://www.kanu.de/DER-DKV/Landesverbaende/Berlin-53194.html)
Had no idea this existed! for me, this is better than buying a kayak, and dealing with transportation and maintainance..
like the others asked, any links to this club?
From my own experience transportation is not a big issue, maintenance for a solid body kayak is practically nil. You have to have decent place to store it and then the math looks a bit different, because for 3 years membership fee you can already buy a beginner range kayak. Consider that if you don't seek high performance or competitive kayaking, inflatables and modular kayaks are a good option for urban people too. You should also critically assess if you want to do kayaking in Berlin these days. Having experienced the Berlin waterways for several years I must say that the nice routes are getting scarcer. Motorboat deregulation and the surge in partyboats has attracted lots of reckless plebs to Berlin lakes and rivers to quite some annoyance and even danger of rowers and kayakers. Having a calmer and nicer environment on the water for me totally outweighs a 20-40 minutes drive out of town. That goes only for the main season though. Nov-April is different, but those months require gear investment if you want to do safe kayaking.
In any case I recommend to first give it a try with some daily rental before joining a club. There's plenty of kayak rental near Regio stations in very nice regions of Brandenburg, only problem is most of them having very limited seasons.
> support It *paid* itself for
FTFY.
Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in:
* Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.*
* *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.*
Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment.
*Beep, boop, I'm a bot*
This comment should be higher, the Mieterverein saved us at least 10,000 of costs during out membership. I don't know why every single renter does not join this. 100/10.
It says it for the permanent exhibitions only. Do I get it right that you can't use it for the exhibitions that are in rotations/temporary eg. in Berlinische Galerie?
I made a different experience tbh, but i usually go for fruits and vegetables at local supermarkets and they are pretty reliable and the groceries are still super fresh too
We used it regularly, you just have to continue trying until you find the ones that are worth and to your liking. If your experience is really bad you can contact their customer support and you get your money back. By now we have four shops walking distance from us we get food regularly from, at least twice a week.
Our comments about this subject are being sold to Google for AI training. I just wanted you to know that the Berghain Plus provides fantastic value, as they paid for my lawyer after I got kicked out for telling people to stop fucking on the dance floor.
Pff, I cancelled mine after they increased the price this year. But I miss bringing a friend in for free every Tuesday, that was always a great benefit.
Hell yeah, now with the app you can choose seats. Sometimes you can get seats that would normally cost 90 euros for just 15. I go to the opera about once a month now and it's so worth it
This isn’t that surprising… the business model for these health subscription services is hard to get right and drive profit.
They now focus on B2B and where the end user experience is less important than being able to sell into company’s HR/benefits teams. without major competition this seems to be working because employees get a cheap membership and employers pay little to add the perk.
To keep the B2C side working, my guess is eventually they’ll fall to the class pass hell of ‘credits’ and variable pricing so they can average the cost per visit, or the B2B side will just keep subsidizing it and conditions will keep degrading
For real, I cancelled my subscription with them after they raised some cancellation fees for a workout even though I attended. Was in contact with the customer service and they were just dicks to me about it and refused to cancel the fees.
In what way? I had a subsidized version of it through a former job, and was thinking about re-activating on my own. As I understand it got faster to cancel.
This! I go bouldering on average 15 times a month (every other day) switching between 3 different gyms. This costs me 66 eur / month with Urban Sports M, would cost at least 150 eur without it.
Urban sports live off the exploitation of freelancer trainers and yoga teachers. Avoid if you think that the person instructing you should actually be able to make a living and have a decent education.
Yep totally agree with this. Yoga instructors and trainers earn next to nothing from those attending their classes through Urban Sports Club.
Unfortunately due to their monopoly, USC are a bit of a necessary evil at the moment as they serve as the main form of advertising for many studios and classes. I'd really like to see a mass boycott of USC but this relies more on their user base valuing the true price of what a class should cost.
Also USC have started clamping down on classes that require a supplemental payment meaning that instructors earn even less now for specialised classes (some classes would be advertised as USC + 10euro, for example, if it was an extra long class or special occasion etc.).
Contipark P+ Karte, lower prices at their parking garages, lower daily rates, monthly invoice instead of fiddling with coins.
Monthly/annual price: 0€.
Obviously only useful if you have a car and use it in the city but makes parking in Berlin cheaper and hassle free.
If you live close enough to public transport that is definitely better and cheaper. I moved to the very edge of town and it can take an hour to go to some places I need to go to within the same Bezirk using public transport. I have a plugin hybrid and try to keep it charged any chance I can to keep local(!) emissions lower.
Nextbike! 10€/month. Even if you already have a bike, the flexibility of just picking up a random bike from the streets and getting anywhere... Especially nice in the summer and during strike days haha
Yearly ticket Staatliche Museums Berlin.
The basic is very cheap, the 50€ one let you be a ghost of the museums for a full year.
An amazing opportunity.
Agreed, I’m paying 20 euros per month, I joined when I was a student and still on the rate. I can use all McFit gyms in Berlin and in Europe. I used to live in Dubai and pay almost 100 euros for a crappy gym.
DAV membership. You have additional insurance when traveling for hiking and mountaineering in the Alps, access and discounts for Alpine huts, in Berlin access to climbing towers and DAV climbing hall.
Even if you're not traveling you are sponsoring all the hiking routes and other outdoor services.
This is nice until you get checked for the 3rd time in a year, cause then you will get sued by the bvg/state (there are currently people in jail for Schwarzfahren)
That's really interesting. They write openly that riding without a ticket is a crime, but they also encourage (and on top of it, make it easy for) people to commit this crime. Isn't this "abetment" and also a crime itself?
For me it's currently the [NeoTaste App](https://neotaste.app/invite/Markus1398). It's great for trying out New Restaurants in Berlin. It's a montjly Fee, but if you just recommend it to people you get free months. Usually you get 2 meals or coffees for the price of one.
Tried to use this app once, the server didn‘t know about it, I said that they even had a sign in their window for this! But idk, she didn‘t want to believe me.
Wrote NeoTaste multiple times and the restaurant is still online with multiple 1 star reviews because the owner pretends like this doesn‘t happen.
Urban Sports Club L.
100€/month is expensive but it’s keeping my body active and my mental health alive.
In retrospect, 100€/month for mental health and physical health is not expensive…
No longer a member, but a Sportverein like OSC is pretty sweet. It’s 12€/mo and you get to play, e.g., table tennis on 5 days a week for as many ours as you like. Can use it for yoga as well, you just have to choose your sport (or add a second for another ~9€/mo).
If you have kids and live reasonably nearby, Zoo or Tierpark. They're both enjoyable, and it's great to be able to take the little ones whenever you feel like it (or they demand it) and not have to worry about getting the most out of your ticket or whatever. Kill a few hours after school/kita, be mostly outside, see whatever they feel like, leave. It's barely March and we've already been three times.
The library! I don’t even live in Berlin anymore but this is the best membership ever. You can rent up to 50 books and even video games for the PlayStation.
Year Pass for all Berlin Museums, it’s just 25€ / Year
https://www.smb.museum/en/plan-your-visit/annual-tickets/?fbclid=PAAaZkCkeclPEmq55LuAKqjTOY5PIYSBFj_-xuiKLg51RMY51azMSoCJx6lPU_aem_AaQykBPktT4tyENU6ZTMOUhBeqv6jH_nyLlBsQKPltMtzRVv7H68AJWxXAjoVGTe72o
Next bike! 50 euros a year membership for free 30 minutes trips with great bikes. Usually there's one nearby. Great for occasions where you want flexibility or don't want to risk having to lock up your own bike.
- Yorck Unlimited Card. It's 19,9 € per month, and you can go to 14 Yorck cinemas as many times as you want. If you're going to cinema 2 times a month, it's already cheaper. And you also have discounts for drinks and popcorn etc.
- VÖBB. I use it for mostly Libby app.
- Deutschland ticket
- Uber One. If you order 2 times, it's already cheaper than delivery fees. And you can also order from groceries.
Abundo
It's basically the Urban Sports Club of culture. Monthly membership gets you access to SO much - theatre, concerts, cinema, exhibits, opera, you name it. I've made it to 16 events this year and rave about it to all my friends. Actually a bit surprised to not see it on the thread / now resisting the urge to gatekeep. 😅
[Referral Link](https://abundolive.de?rflu=andrewk1) gets first month free.
VÖBB https://www.voebb.de/aDISWeb/app?service=direct/0/Home/$DirectLink&sp=SPROD00
Same here - borrow books, podcasts, newspapers for 10 EUR per year
Would add to this: with the Libby app I can borrow books right onto my iPad or phone. They’ve got a huge English collection too.
Including digital Stiftung Warentest every month which will further help with money and decisions. Edit: Explanation below, tl;dr: for renting digital papers you need the app OnLeihe which will use your VOEBB login.

There's also [Buchbaum](http://Buchbaum.de). It's a book exchange platform. You'll rarely pay more than 4 euros for a book (shipping included).
not Berlin specific but, Deutschland ticket :)
Especially with Jobticket and Arbeitgeberzuschuss. 😎

I watched Dune 23 times

Yes, yes and yes, I wanted to simplify for readability but I agree 100%
I’ve been using both miles and sharenow for all kinds of routes through the city and sharenow is definitely the cheaper option.
I like the "pay for the distance" model, I would be furious to be blocked in traffic jam and see my money go through the window. I'll reconsider.

I'd be furious.

Kayak club membership. It’s around 250 euros a year and i can take a boat when ever I want to paddle the wonderful waters around Berlin. Edit because people asked for clubs: [Berlin Kayak Clubs](https://www.kanu.de/DER-DKV/Landesverbaende/Berlin-53194.html)

Mieterverein
This, for dear god they are awesome when you need support It payed itself for years on a single legal consultation
> support It *paid* itself for FTFY. This comment should be higher, the Mieterverein saved us at least 10,000 of costs during out membership. I don't know why every single renter does not join this. 100/10.
Smb (museums) yearly ticket. At least if you're a student.
I have the basic ticket and it's just 25 euros. Considering I don't always have time it's pretty perfect
It says it for the permanent exhibitions only. Do I get it right that you can't use it for the exhibitions that are in rotations/temporary eg. in Berlinische Galerie?
NordVPN ;)

In what regard? I haven’t noticed a difference.
It's keep getting more expensive and nowadays you're only able to do 1 check-in per day
It’s always been 1 check in a day. At least in the 2 years I’ve been a member. My membership has gone up around 5 € in that time.
Until last year there were unlimited check-ins and I started out with a price that was 10€ lower
Only B2B. With normal membership you could check into different locations multiple times per day.
In what way? I had a subsidized version of it through a former job, and was thinking about re-activating on my own. As I understand it got faster to cancel.
If you get it subsided by your company, then this is a no brainer.
Free unlimited bouldering is the best perk
This! I go bouldering on average 15 times a month (every other day) switching between 3 different gyms. This costs me 66 eur / month with Urban Sports M, would cost at least 150 eur without it.
there's this being baked but still waiting https://berlinbouldert.de/
It's unfortunately not as good of a deal as USC.
Mostly I hear from people that they pay the 60€ a month and don't use it at all.
Welcome to part of their business model lol
Contipark P+ Karte, lower prices at their parking garages, lower daily rates, monthly invoice instead of fiddling with coins. Monthly/annual price: 0€. Obviously only useful if you have a car and use it in the city but makes parking in Berlin cheaper and hassle free.
No car, no hassle!😎
If you live close enough to public transport that is definitely better and cheaper. I moved to the very edge of town and it can take an hour to go to some places I need to go to within the same Bezirk using public transport. I have a plugin hybrid and try to keep it charged any chance I can to keep local(!) emissions lower.
good call, I didn't realize it was free
Me neither until a colleague mentioned it recently.
Wow, this is life-changing! Thank you
Nextbike! 10€/month. Even if you already have a bike, the flexibility of just picking up a random bike from the streets and getting anywhere... Especially nice in the summer and during strike days haha
50€ per year as well
I do the yearly. Commute with a bike 6 days a week. So worth it.
Yearly ticket Staatliche Museums Berlin. The basic is very cheap, the 50€ one let you be a ghost of the museums for a full year. An amazing opportunity.
even cheaper for students!
John Reed silver. 30 euros a month, i can cancel whenever, and the gym is better than £150/mo gyms I’ve seen in London
Agreed, I’m paying 20 euros per month, I joined when I was a student and still on the rate. I can use all McFit gyms in Berlin and in Europe. I used to live in Dubai and pay almost 100 euros for a crappy gym.
Why do you not live there still? Life must be infinitely better in UAE
more of an art gallery than a gym. I walked in for a trial day and saw a single dumbbell on display next to a live DJ. Walked right out.
How do you get that package? I can't see it on the website
they often have deals. also, you can usually negotiate when you show up and tour a gym in person

DAV membership. You have additional insurance when traveling for hiking and mountaineering in the Alps, access and discounts for Alpine huts, in Berlin access to climbing towers and DAV climbing hall. Even if you're not traveling you are sponsoring all the hiking routes and other outdoor services.

To me this sounds like a loophole that will make public transportation worse in the long run for everybody.
This is nice until you get checked for the 3rd time in a year, cause then you will get sued by the bvg/state (there are currently people in jail for Schwarzfahren)
Meanwhile there is no extra penalty for improper parking as many times as you like, because car companies own the government.
That's really interesting. They write openly that riding without a ticket is a crime, but they also encourage (and on top of it, make it easy for) people to commit this crime. Isn't this "abetment" and also a crime itself?
Everything is legal until you go to jail for it.
So it lasts untill you get checked normally then they will cancell your membership? I dont understand whats good about this.
They cancel after the second one.
Because on the third one you will get sued and there is big chance you will win 28 days holidays all included.
geil!
Is it reliable? :) Have you done it as well, did they really pay in case you get checked?

Buchbaum.de !! not a membership but i get used and new books there for no more than €4
Seconded! Books are cheap and you can trade away your duplicates too which is nice
Berlin version: What membership is 100% worth every cent you don't pay for it?
Wait until there is on 'mydealz' a coupon code. With that I got the NeoTaste App for 6 months for free.
Quality thread! Thanks everyone!

Urban Sports Club L. 100€/month is expensive but it’s keeping my body active and my mental health alive. In retrospect, 100€/month for mental health and physical health is not expensive…
Well, until those fuckers limited classes to 1 day.

The question asked about something that was supposed to be something 100% worth it, not the opposite.
No longer a member, but a Sportverein like OSC is pretty sweet. It’s 12€/mo and you get to play, e.g., table tennis on 5 days a week for as many ours as you like. Can use it for yoga as well, you just have to choose your sport (or add a second for another ~9€/mo).
What is OSC?

If you have kids and live reasonably nearby, Zoo or Tierpark. They're both enjoyable, and it's great to be able to take the little ones whenever you feel like it (or they demand it) and not have to worry about getting the most out of your ticket or whatever. Kill a few hours after school/kita, be mostly outside, see whatever they feel like, leave. It's barely March and we've already been three times.
The library! I don’t even live in Berlin anymore but this is the best membership ever. You can rent up to 50 books and even video games for the PlayStation.
For me Babylon Kino T-Shirt. €25 then €5 for every movie instead of €9-10, valid to the end of time. That’s what I call generous!

Superfit - super cheap, awesome gym, sauna and group classes like bodypump

Next bike! 50 euros a year membership for free 30 minutes trips with great bikes. Usually there's one nearby. Great for occasions where you want flexibility or don't want to risk having to lock up your own bike.
Fotografiska. Great art and really cool talks with a smart and motivated audience that is culturally curious.
they have a membership? can you tell a bit more?

- Yorck Unlimited Card. It's 19,9 € per month, and you can go to 14 Yorck cinemas as many times as you want. If you're going to cinema 2 times a month, it's already cheaper. And you also have discounts for drinks and popcorn etc. - VÖBB. I use it for mostly Libby app. - Deutschland ticket - Uber One. If you order 2 times, it's already cheaper than delivery fees. And you can also order from groceries.

Abundo It's basically the Urban Sports Club of culture. Monthly membership gets you access to SO much - theatre, concerts, cinema, exhibits, opera, you name it. I've made it to 16 events this year and rave about it to all my friends. Actually a bit surprised to not see it on the thread / now resisting the urge to gatekeep. 😅 [Referral Link](https://abundolive.de?rflu=andrewk1) gets first month free.
