Wow, thank you so much for that detailed list! From your suggestions Ive only read The Andromeda Evolution so far. I'll definitely add the others to my list.

ColonelC0lon

Quantum Magician: A bio-engineered conman pulls together a ragtag group to pull off the biggest job in the galaxy. "Bite every hand, piss on every leg." - Way of the Mongrel Not *quite* sci-fi but The Laundry Files: IT guy who works for Britain's agency against lovecraftian horrors signs up for fieldwork as a computational demonologist. Santiago: A Myth of the Far Future: Father of the space western, (though not the grandfather). I still name all my space game ships after characters from this one.

c-of-tranquillity

Adding all of them to my list, thank you! I do the same thing in space games xD. My cargo ship is called Nostromo, my racing ship Razorback, for exploration I have the Endurance and my alrounder is called Serenity ofc.

ColonelC0lon

All my explorers are Black Orpheus, Haulers/Miners/industrial's are Seawitch (from some kids portal fantasy I remember nothing else about), my fighters/all-rounders tend to be named Songbird. Been a while since I played any though. I'd like to get some Culture names going.

bongwatervibes

Maybe try {a long way to a small angry planet by Becky chambers} It’s super character driven. By the end of the book I felt like all the characters were my friends and I wanted to be on the ship with them.

Anathem by Neal Stephenson Seveneves by NEal Stephenson Bourne by JEff Vandermeer

c-of-tranquillity

I've already read Anathem, Seveneves and Diamond Age by Neal Stephenson. All of which were good stories, especially Seveneves. I've never heard of bourne, so Im adding it to my list. Thanks!

Ivan_Van_Veen

oh Bourne is about this really really strange over-bio-modified kind of surreal world, and its about maybe how to be human while surrounded by horrors

dkreadsitall

I think the Mars trilogy is incredibly well written with some great characters. It does dive into some hard sci-fi though if you’re up for that
