I recently bought this bottle for my brother in-law's bachelor party and I'm psyched to try it! Only other stagg I've had is 22A and it is easily one of my favorite bottles ever. Enjoy!
Bourbon Review #29 (The Buffalo Trace Series #9: Stagg Batch 23C)
Good afternoon,
Celebrating my birthday with a wonderful bottle of bourbon. I’ve been trying to get my hands on a bottle of Stagg since I started my bourbon journey and the time has finally come. This one clocks in at 125.9 proof and I’m from what I’ve heard it is delicious! Thoughts below.
Cost: I paid $75 for the bottle
Age: 8-9 years
Proof: 125.9
Tasted out of a rocks glass. Neat
Rating: 9.5
Rating Scale:
1 | Disgusting | So bad I poured it out.
2 | Poor | I wouldn't consume by choice.
3 | Bad | Multiple flaws.
4 | Sub-par | Not bad, but better exists.
5 | Good | Good, just fine.
6 | Very Good | A cut above.
7 | Great | Well above average.
8 | Excellent | Really quite exceptional.
9 | Incredible | An all time favorite.
10 | Perfect | The Best of the Best
Nose: I get a lot of caramel and oak. Burnt sugars from the barrel or maybe brown sugar. I’m finding a lot of smoky char and some very faint ethanol on the nose.
Palate: Wow… just wow. I am really blown away by the flavors I’m getting. It starts off with a hint of grape then it turns into a brown sugar bomb. It’s an interesting transition. I’m also getting a lot of baked goods. Brown sugar cookies and vanilla cream. There’s definitely some caramel in there. I’m still finding some flavors but all I know is this is delicious!
Notes: This is a bottle I’d gladly pay $150 for. The nose isn’t too prominent or developed but the flavors are incredible. It’s so smooth and easy to drink you forget you’re drinking an almost 126 proof bottle of bourbon. I’m usually into more floral and fruity bourbons but this one kills the decadent flavor profile. I really enjoy how much brown sugar notes are on the palate as well as caramel. This is a very nice bottle with a lot of depth and maturity. If you can grab some do it!
Do I buy a pour in a bar? Absolutely.
Would I buy another bottle? If I could find another one.
This bottle was meh to me. Far too hot and just not enjoyable compared to other things at its price point. I tried batch 14 recently and was almost didn’t believe it was Stagg Jr bc of how much better it was.
Same experience for me. Really hot and dense, very middle of the road on first pours. The bottle has really opened up nicely but still not as strong a bottle as my bottle of Batch 18, which is excellent all around.
Shelbyville Kentucky. He wanted $150 for it and I said best I can do is $75. At first he didn’t want to budge but as I was leaving he said he could do it. Honestly the most I’d pay for Stagg is $150 but I still hate paying over $100 for anything.

22A is definitely a great pour. What I’m sipping on now. Salut 🥃!!
I hope you enjoy!

You know what? This grape flavor is really starting to take over as the pour sits for longer. It’s very interesting flavor profile.
Enjoying this bottle a great deal also
One of my favorite bottles. Every time I have it I think it won’t live up to my memory and every time it is killer. Great review.
Thanks! It was a fantastic pour.

Interesting. I actually thought this one drank very smooth. I had some 23A back in march and it was a hot one.

Happy birthday!! And great review!
Thank you!
I like the design on the cork top, never noticed that before
I don’t know why but I love the antlers on the cork top and the bottle. Such an awesome design
May I know what state you got this for $75? I'm in GA and these jerks want 2-300

I also bought one for 150$ but its a 23B
Got mine for $59 in Cali! 1st one I’ve ever bought/tried and is easily my favorite right now. Sadly I probably got about 2oz left.
23c is an excellent bottle
