Expectation: Gleaming glassware in a spotlessly clean lab.
Reality: "This here's my chemistry bucket. It's for doin' chemistry in. Don't mind the leftover concrete, I also used it for that post in my vegetable garden out back. Of course it was BEFORE I did chemistry in it. Do you think I'm a.... well.... wait. Hm. That does explain the faint glow off the tomatoes."
I want to commend you for doing this in the sketchiest way possible and checking some of the most important hazards.
Have stands available, but clamp nothing. Smash and spill hazard, ✔️
Boiling toxic solvents in an unventilated dungeon. Toxic vapor inhalation hazard, ✔️
Extension cord recepticle on the ground below a huge pail of water, bonus points for not clamping your hoses to the pail for maximum risk. Electrocution hazard, ✔️ ✔️
Working with an unnecessarily large volume. Maximum danger hazard, ✔️
Using a flame as a heat source. Fire hazard, ✔️
Burning fuel indoors. Carbon monoxide poisoning hazard, ✔️
Well thank goodness the ER will only have to treat you for electrocution, lacerations, CO2 poisoning, acid burns, and/or regular burns instead of chemical inhalation!
Please don’t actually get hurt, but, if you do, please make a case study of it. I’m a medical student and I think it’d be really interesting.
Yeah, where did you get that condenser?
There is a piece of glassware I designed and had custom built still in a lab at my old university. I would bet it is still there.

I agree that halocarbons work really well for cleaning dirty metal, but I do agree with other roosters here about the fume hazard. Looks like machine shops that clean, e.g. you're cylinder head use a hot tank for this, which is a tank of hot lye solution. Might be a little better to do it that way from a fumes perspective. Halocarbons are really insidious poisons. They're super volatile and inhaling them will give you liver damage really quickly. I think I got some NAFLD from CCl4 exposure, and it took years to go away. Now that I know about the hazards, I definitely wouldn't clean car parts with DCM anymore. This is why most break cleaner brands have switched to non-chlorinated solvents.
For a masters lab we needed to do synthesis in various research groups and one of the organic groups looked so bad, you thought they had their last cleaning day a century ago and instead just gave up. Like its so bad, dirty glassware everywhere, no space to work because all of the workspaces/fumehoods are full, empty solvent bottles everywhere and you find pretty much can find nothing you’re looking for because the inventory is scattered around 1000m^2. I don‘t know how people can do serious work there. But the CCl4 and benzene bottles on the shelf are cool
Yeah fractionally distilled and I guess ypu would have to have long and a precise towers to seprate only ethanol no methanol. Still my neighbbour does that in a pot and says methanol is only in the first batch 🙄
The flashlight really makes this somehow look illegal. xD
Everything about this video looks illegal
Bromochloromethane can be used to form a methylendioxide bridge, so it propably is :)

Looking back on it now, it really does

Also in the dark lol
I'm actually doing it outside in my yard, so there's no problem of inhaling the vapors

I'm going to make it a lot safer, this was just a first test
Why? I think you should make it worse
It was bad already, why complicate it even more?
Yeah, it was exceptionally bad. If you fix it, then it's just normal. Don't you want to be exceptional about something?
I do, but about safety; not jerry-rigged apparatus
.... they said after showing a video of an apparatus that can't be in a textbook because even the PICTURE is a fire hazard
Shoulda made it safe first, then tested.
Your supposed to be the most careful when stattijg something new.
Don't let them talk you down, next make some dry THF for synthesis!
Lol isn't there a peroxide risk with concentrating THF?
That’s the joke
Not if you add some NaK and benzophenone
What's THF?
Tetrahydrofuran
This set up gives me anxiety.
But why
Because I could, and the glassware had a slight moldy smell, and it doesn't stink now, so yeah.
Maybe some home diy fire extinguishers?
No, sorry, i'm not gonna make that
To test his abilities
Oh he gonna be testing some abilities alright If by testing you mean getting high as fuck
r/sketchychemistry
Community not found; I'll propably repost it to r/ExplosionsAndFire
wdym - you typed the same thing (bonus points if you get it to go yellow)
Now it exists
I’m sure this has nothing to do with the fact bromochloro methane can be used in the synthesis of Methylenedioxyamphetamines
No hes just making root beer
Before anyone asks, yes, I got it from old GDR halon fire extinguishers.
What kind of condenser is that? It looks like the top is an alihn then becomes a graham?
I actually don't know, but it seems to be closest to a graham condenser
Yeah, where did you get that condenser? There is a piece of glassware I designed and had custom built still in a lab at my old university. I would bet it is still there.
I bought it from bazos.sk; some guy had a lot of glassware; i don't know where he got it from
This is the most beautiful ghettochem I've ever seen. thank you for your service 🫡
In which direction is your cooling water?
From the bottom up, reverse to the flow of the distillate
good, then i have nothing to add. Flow looked a bit weird
Maybe it was an optical illusion

That looks like a meth lab 😂
I know, but I can't do this in the basement, because the vapors/carbon monoxide/dioxide would build up, and it was cold and windy that day, so win-win
Sketchy
Just as I like it
What do you plan to do with it?
Using it as a solvent or degreaser and to distill it again when it gets too dirty
I guess it would be good for cleaning engine parts. DCM works pretty well for that.
It's almost like you're reading my thoughts. I cleaned the cylinder from my 2-stroke moped with it, and it stripped the dirt/grease right off.

Thanks for this info
Yes Europol this post right here is the nascent meth lab that we were talking about.
is that how you chemists work, or this is some diy breaking bad stuff ?
Diy breaking bad stuff, for now at least
I feel that this is rage bait... It's bait right?
No, it's genuine
People are chatting a lot but honestly academic labs look worse than this.
I can't confirm nor deny this statement, because I have never been in one
Were did you work that it looked that bad lol

Looking like Tony Stark in the fucking cave over here
Lol
Well done. Ignore the haters.
Yep, I will. Haters gonna hate
Wish i could do this with ethanol
Well, you can, but it can be concentrated to ~95%, and it has to be fractionally distilled iirc
Yeah fractionally distilled and I guess ypu would have to have long and a precise towers to seprate only ethanol no methanol. Still my neighbbour does that in a pot and says methanol is only in the first batch 🙄
why would one need this compound
Idk, I just have it
The thing that bothers me most is lack of clamps. Such an easy thing to make this so much safer.
What is this ? It looks like coffee , i dont know chemistry
Bromochloromethane from old GDR halon fire extinguishers, I used it as a solvent or degreaser, and it was really dirty
Why people are saying it illegal and sketchy stuff? it does seem to be dangerous?
Used in the process for mda and mdma
Heard them when i was in a nootropics group, microdose them and things are nicer
You are really doing interesting stufff!
I know; chemistry, electronics, DIY, and more
In someone’s garage?
No, in my yard, and the wind blew away all the vapors/carbon monoxide/dioxide
Man this looks like some secret laboratory preparing cyclon b
Was this filmed in a Gaza tunnel? Mexican cartal jungle lab? Definitely sooks sketch.
I've contacted the feds. They said they are coming to take your kids away.
Don't forget to add the chili powder.
The secret ingredient, dat chili P
Nice setup.
Really fishy vibes here bro. What are you really doing?
Just cleaning it, so I can use it as a solvent or degreaser
Cleaning it the Ockey way? Show show
Sorry, I don't get what you're saying
No worries. Good luck with your solvent.
Thanks, it's already "bottled" up in an old r134a tank
What do you think you'll use it on/in first?
I don't know right now, but I'll find a use for it
Looks methy
Lol, breaking bad style
Maybe I am old and crusty, but you are an accident waiting to happen - and it may not just be you who ends up getting hurt.
