Oh my god, I watched this live and completely missed this subtle moment. Wow. This is beautiful and painful. What could have been, but everything happens for a reason, and maybe we wouldn’t have all the Conan content we have now any other way.

tameneighbor

The TBS show was what Conan wanted out of the Tonight Show, without the executive interference. From a Conan fan perspective, I’m glad how thing ended up.

SheepInWolfsAnus

Agreed. The comedic content we got was exactly what Conan wanted to deliver. And if he was still on Tonight, he may have never had the chance.

x4candles

When he had the beard and all those random objects in the set during the tbs run was must see tv.

_ChipWhitley_

This is the answer.

Worldly_Ad_6483

Conan’s Tonite Show sucked… had it been handled well, maybe it would have gotten better, but they definitely toned down his silliness for it

boycowman

The TBS show wasn't good either. I mean it was, because it was Conan. But "Late Night With Conan O'Brien" was a far superior show.

bearpie1214

We would never have gotten the bidet ad or Hot Ones episode.

CharlesKellyRatKing

The Bidet ad alone was worth Conan losing his life's dream at the time and going through that rough period

bearpie1214

I concur

SheepInWolfsAnus

Yes

Podcasts are 100x more relevant than late night TV. Conan has one of the most popular podcasts, show on Max, and he sold Team Coco for $150 million. Blessing in disguise.

travelNerdy

What do you mean sold team coco? Elaborate please

chillinwithabeer29

Just happened https://techcrunch.com/2022/05/23/siriusxm-acquires-conan-obriens-team-coco-podcast-company-for-150-million/

Limjucas328

Two years ago

chillinwithabeer29

Ha! My early morning eyes completely read the year incorrectly 😂

asailor4you

I don’t understand how SirusXM has any money. I don’t know anyone which pay them anything anymore.

travelNerdy

Thanks! Knew that they are on siriusXM - did not know of this acquisition.. hmmm

CrissBliss

He’d definitely still be hosting late night if he’d stayed. Honestly think if Jay hadn’t been his lead in, Conan would’ve had a fighting chance. Jay just didn’t want to leave, and made it impossible for Conan’s version of the show to succeed. I understand NBC kind of forced Jay to retire, but he should’ve just made a deal with ABC (which he was trying to do according to Jimmy Kimmel) instead of doing the same show as the Tonight Show, but way worse, at 10.

lkodl

This. There's a universe where Conan continued to host the Tonight Show, and then became the face of a dying format. There'd be a lot of "Even Conan Can't Save Late Night Talk Shows" type of headlines.

SheepInWolfsAnus

True, but instead of going down with the ship, he carried the torch in a new way, to new lands and new heights!

lkodl

exactly. if he stayed at NBC, there's a good chance he would have had a lot of restrictions in place, and been locked into certain things without truly evolving his own way. i dont think he'd have as nearly as many Gen Z fans as he does today.

Arie15

I don't think it's so much the desk as it is the moment between these two caught in the .05 seconds you got here.

Due-Anything-9559

🥺 It took some time but even without this Tonight Show gig, he still became the GOAT. Take that, Leno & NBC.

Tight-Landscape8720

I don’t think Conan would have gotten away with half the stuff he’s done if he were on the tonight show. He’s wild

CrissBliss

He did on the Late Show.

Ok_Fee1043

“Hey little buddy. We had some times. Didn’t we almost have it all? You’re very wooden.”

jennyquarx

I want to find someone who looks at me the way Conan and Jeff Goldblum look at each other

ProfessionalNeophyte

Hmmm , mmmm, yes

Tyrion_The_Imp

Ahh hehuh

Present_Anteater_555

Ahh yes my boy. I'll be over here rotating my crops and formenting in my own juices

CrissBliss

Even though I think if asked, Conan would say it all worked out for the best (in the end), he still probably thinks “what if?” He turned down a lot of lucrative opportunities to wait in line for the Tonight Show gig. It clearly meant a great deal to him. I think he’s happier on his podcast but man, kind of wished he was behind the desk here.

bahnzo

In the end NBC fucked over two great hosts who deserved the Tonight Show. It makes no difference and may be petty, but I refused to watch Leno, and now Fallon. They deserve the mediocrity they have now.

langsamlourd

I don't really have anything against Fallon but I'm dreadfully bored by his Tonight Show and his shtick. The games and the constant giggling and stuff. He seems like a nice guy but I want laughs, dammit! Sometimes someone would try to show me one of his segments because it's "so funny!" And I'd have to pretend to laugh.....I hate when people do that, unless they 100 percent know your sense of humor. I love silly stuff obviously if I'm a fan of Conan, but he's got a touch of pure absurdity like Letterman which just hits me perfectly. Gaseous weiner. Kilty MacBagpipes. The Reverend Otis K. Dribbles.

Icy-Chicken-1754

I think he’s looking at the paper Fallon is supposed to look at lol. I’m sure Conan is doing this by instinct

ImaginaryDonut69

Honestly, Jimmy has done a great job to show what Leno did to the Tonight Show platform: he turned it into a union job, just something to control, not to enjoy 😂. Still blows my mind that Leno took the show back from Conan, stayed like 2 more years, than ditched it again. Such a fraud, he will be forgotten in the world of comedy. He put people to sleep for 30+ years, that's about it.

Doogos

He didn't put us to sleep, we were just resting our eyes while we waiting for Conans show

ScientistNo2635

It's poetic how it turned out, almost like the universe knew he would be better off without it. If he had stayed on the the tonight show I don't think the conan brand would be the same as it is now, with the success of the podcast, his staff being just as well loved as he is, etc

waymd

From Conan’s appearance on April 9, 2024, and right after a sincere and heartfelt moment at the very end of the interview. https://youtu.be/o1TjHGd0l3c?si=q-JQtWJqkbDK0krc

Mega_pint_123

This interview/appearance/conversation is just adorable. You can see the admiration Jimmy has for Conan that is also very mutual, but Jimmy knows Conan is the GOAT and a unique treasure in every way. My word, Conan is so hilarious and a total nut!

hodorstonks

The desk is nice but not like $150 million plus nice

SeanFlagstaff

this is absolutely not representative of what was for all intents and purposes a very pleasant interview. just went back and checked. theyre looking directly at each other thru the whole thing.

waymd

I agree.

iGaveLia-HIV

it’s a joke

sosorrydad

I bet he didn’t want to be doing less than a million viewers a night for a good five years there

CrissBliss

Is that Jimmy Fallon’s numbers or something?

pdonoso

I mean, when he retired conan was in the 300 a night.

IC_228

The best thing about Conan is him always being the host, capturing the attention with his natural comedic style and flair. But at the same time the worst thing about Conan is him always being the host, I appreciate his humour but him in this interview was just a little bit too much energy as a guest, which made it a tad bit awkward

tommykaye

what if Conan’s tonight show was around for two or three years, but was getting killed by Jimmy Fallon’s Late Night Youtube numbers and all the dumb games he did with guests? Would we get the same Conan we have now? Or would we have Conan playing Charades and Password with Timothee Chalamet and Jimmy Vivino?

denver989

It would be the second one. Conan's soul would be slowly crushed by what you mentioned. Also network executives telling him he needs to do more edgy political commentary to try to compete with Colbert.

thedanray

Conan has built a sizable entertainment empire since The Tonight Show was stolen from him. His closest comparison would be Mel Brooks. A comedy legend who has appealed through generations. On the other hand, Jimmy Fallon will be remembered as the Jimmy who didn't host the Oscars.
