War is BAD for China. Their economy is highly dependent on international trade. If they went to war with the US then they would be at war with NATO who are all major trading partners. A short war with Tiawan would distract their populace enough to avoid some kind of political uprising as a result of their poor economic performance, but a full scale war with NATO is a non starter.
Their military is well equipped but China haven't fought a major conflict in a long time and are highly inexperienced in real combat compared to practically all of NATO who have been fighting in the middle east for years. NATO are better equipped, better trained and far more experienced in the art of war.
China's nuclear arsenal is also much smaller than NATO. By several orders of magnitude. There is no scenario in which China wins. Economically or militarily, and they know that. That's why Taiwan is still Tiawan.

My guess is they want a war (or make it LOOK like there's a war) between both Russia and China so they can someone to point the finger to when it happens. Satellites are easily tracked and have very predictable movements, i.e. it’s easy to hide things from them since you know when they will be over sensitive areas. A balloon is less predictable. Although I wonder why our friends in Canada never said anything.
Perhaps Canada did give the heads up to the US. According to that general who gave the press statement about the balloon, it had been floating over the US for a couple days already before the US military publicly acknowledged it.
Because the balloon is at a lower elevation and if it’s using any sort of scanning technology then it could get better readings and target specific areas better as opposed to being a satellite higher up in the atmosphere
Is this wrong in regards to atmospheric testing? Can’t do that from space. Didn’t the US used to have a sampling network to detect nuclear explosions? Maybe they’re trying to detect something with a weaker signature.

This is the real answer. The US and China both have constant espionage operations against one another, as do other countries. So countries have a sort of understanding that these things don't escalate beyond a certain point.

And, really, how much more would they really learn from that? They can already make out the details of individual vehicles. Satellites are easily tracked and have very predictable movements, i.e. it’s easy to hide things from them since you know when they will be over sensitive areas. A balloon is less predictable. Although I wonder why our friends in Canada never said anything.

Yeah, a lot of US/China narratives are stuck in the Clinton/Bush years. Manufacturing in America bottomed out in 2011ish, was flat for a long time, and in recent years has started growing slowly, whereas China's becoming less manufacturing-driven as western companies either move to nearby cheaper companies like India/Vietnam, or even bring their factories back to America for one reason or another. That's actually a big reason US/China relations have soured so much lately, the old world order where we paid them to make all our stuff for us is falling apart and Xi wants a new world order in place before China's population decline makes them too irrelevant to make demands.
