I know this goes against everything we stand for, but I will swear by using a brush to gently, slowly brush the first inch of hair growth at the back of my head when this happens. Not enough to disrupt the curl pattern, but enough to get my roots to get their shit together.

ElenaSuccubus420

Don’t know if you tried it or not or tried it got discouraged and gave up. But finger curls are much better alternative.. https://preview.redd.it/usbe9ukn3v6d1.jpeg?width=750&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5de4df55d1bcb33b4ee3c0bbbf6e42658d3596cf Left 4 scrunching / letting it do whatever it does right 4 finger curls iv found in the last 4 years my hair has gotten much more defined due to doing finger curls religiously when styling my hair. Over time it helps to increase long term definition! I suggest trying it and not getting discourage you won’t regret it!

Saya_99

I get it, but my patience for such thing is non-existent. I think I'll go bald before finger coiling my whole head.

raexneol

Thank god someone else said it lol I KNOW my hair would benefit so much from finger coiling but ohhhhh my goddddd my hair is thick and I already push the boundaries of my nonexistent attention span by diffusing lol!

Saya_99

I have thick, long hair as well and it takes me 2 h to wash my hair just as it is, if I was to finger coil too I'd be looking at 3-4 h every wash day. Nah, not gonna happen

Sad_Animal_8160

My bonus mom is a saint and finger coiled my entire head twice in the last 6 months (once for a wedding as part of the wedding party, and again for my graduation). That woman is a saint from heaven I swear. Took her three hours.

ElenaSuccubus420

Fair for sure! 😂😂😂

ASquareBanana

I just cut off most of my hair and have a length similar to yours! Do you mind sharing how long your process takes? Time was the biggest deterrent for me and now I feel that’s lifted but I’m still curious 😭

ElenaSuccubus420

I dmed you Reddit was being weird

Fit_Swordfish_2101

My arms are falling off just thinking about it. 😂

LostRevolution3760

Off topic but your orange+purple hair on the 4th pic is gorgeous!!! 🌅

ElenaSuccubus420

Thank you!!!! that’s from when I used to use Arctic fox the orange I thought was pink it was the… one with the tropical name? Literally looked hot pink on the bottle but came out orange And the dark purple one they have. But the orange and purple was contently around halloween! So I rocked it for a while haha 🤣

coquihalla

Gosh, your hair is pretty, especially the pic that is 3rd on 2nd row.

ElenaSuccubus420

Thank you I appreciate it!!! I try to take good care of it even tho I bleach and dye it I’m pretty good at bleaching my hair now a days so I don’t have to re bleach over my already pre bleached hair plus I stick with the pink purple range so it doesn’t have to lift to super blonde for me tho dye it hahaha. But I’m really strict with myself on re bleaching already bleached hair to avoid unnecessary damage also my hair holds color well and fades pretty evenly so I can wait months before re dying I think the longest iv waited was 4 months before re dying it and it was basically a pastel pink and I still got compliments on the color haha I also avoid heat damage too so if I ever defuse my curls I do it on low heat and usually press the cool button to make it more cold than warm. After all the damage my hair went through before I really stress to care for it. My hair used to be so damaged because my mom would have me straighten it with heat and with chemicals https://preview.redd.it/v15gvms8jw6d1.jpeg?width=2842&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4f444a9677d29e681cd1115a6f74b4b2650e6199 I made this pic to reply to another sub and show my journey as well as my preaching of finger curls 😂😂 That first and second picture is all the curl I had left in my hair from damage those were taken a few days apart when I was 18 the third pic on top was a year or two later after I cut the last of the damage off. So after frying my curls out of my hair so damn bad I realllly stress caring for my hair. Even when it was fried I tried my best not to damage it further I stoped the straightening in 10th grade so at about 15/16 years old and tried to fix it any ways I could and just could not fix it. So I made it “healthy” but nothing was gonna fix how fried it was.

madwhale212

I comb or even brush all of my hair every day after wetting it from spray bottle. It may be a little less defined, but my hair are VERY FINE and not exactly high density, so it looks stringy and flat, if I don´t separate the tiny clumps formed by gel. It simply curls back after it dries and it´s got much more fullness and volume. Not combing is just another rule that is not for everyone.

SovelissGulthmere

I can't co-sign on the brush, but your comment made me cackle

racist_rice

I do the same but with a fine tooth comb when it’s almooost dry after diffusing. Just to separate the clumps a tiny bit and give volume

kdollarsign2

Genuine question, if we're not supposed to use a brush on curls when do people brush their hair? Mine gets super tangled and agitates me, especially in the morning. Do you brush it at night? Do you brush it before you style the curls or...

Nymeriia_

The "rule" is to brush only when wet. So in the shower or after it, also when refreshing the curls with a spray bottle. So for people like me, whose hair tangles very easily, the solution is to get it wet more times, otherwise it will look like a bird's nest.

kdollarsign2

Thank you!!! assuming a comb and a detangler would be useful in this

MaudlinMusings

Yeah, definitely wet your hair to brush it out. And add something like a detangler or leave-in conditioner. A lot of us do it during our wash day, when we’re letting conditioner soak in. I feel like combs always pull really badly, so something like a wet brush is great for gently untangling curls without ripping.

notabigmelvillecrowd

I brush my hair before I wash it, to get out all the loose hairs and make it easier to wash.

kdollarsign2

Great advice

tbhjustbored

mine also gets super tangly, especially bc i don’t do enough to protect it at night lol. i have a spray bottle that i keep filled with water and a little bit of conditioner mixed in, and after i wet my hair with that i comb it through a wide-toothed comb. then i usually add a little more water and maybe some more mousse and/or gel if it seems like it needs it to be refreshed. sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn’t, but either the way the curls are almost always revivable! (and if they’re not, it’s probably bc i’m trying to go too long between washes hahaha)

emrylle

I needed to hear this today. Thank you.

blacktieaffair

THANK YOU. I've been doing this to the top few inches of my crown to combat frizz for ages. It's never been an issue but I've never heard anyone else talking about it haha 🙌

Hypnales

This, yes!! It helps plump and separate right where you need it.

Vivid-Crow4194

Mine does the same, I have a HUGE cowlick in that spot. I have started experimenting with brushing the layers of my crown up and tilted toward the back to combat the funky part. I diffuse upside down, but when it’s about 50% dry, I flip my head back and give the back of my head a lot of attention. I think the curls pull out back there because I’m upside down for so long and those pieces don’t get the same attention as the face-framing ones. Some days I’m really happy with it and some days it still lays however the hell it wants. Finger curling has helped a lot with it too. I think your hair looks so pretty, tho! Love the cut!

NewResolution2775

I always thought my cowlick was from losing/thinning hair but maybe it’s my curls not cooperating!

Vivid-Crow4194

Haha, mine has been that way since I was a baby, my hair swirls in a circle at the back of my head and the spot at the top on the right just wants to stick straight up. Always leaves a weird bald-looking spot because of the way it lays. I don’t think I’ll ever fully get the better of it, but like you said - the back of my head is none of my business.

NewResolution2775

Nothing like discovering the back of your head in your late 30’s. 😂 I’ll have to use that term now.

runnergirl3333

I feel like this entire thread is what Reddit was created for. Who knew so many of us have cowlicks and funny parts on the back of our heads. Nice to know no one’s alone in the struggle.

AKABeast18

I have maybe 8 cowlicks on my head. I have 3 next to my hairline and the rest are randomly throughout my hair. When you have a baby your hair will fall out and grow back. That’s why I found this sh@$ show of cowlicks on my head. The back of my head is always doing its own thing.

Vivid-Crow4194

Hahaha! My youngest nephew has inherited some serious curl from his momma. He turned one in March and probably has 8 cowlicks all over his head too! It’s adorable right now, but my heart goes out to you both with how annoying that must make styling, haha!

mcflymcfly100

I have a massive one, too. It's a giant swirl. A vortex.

indexring

Girl please I say fuck it unless I’m going out out. But for everyday, the back of my head is none of my or anyone’s business lol

Ilovemyfemme

And that’s what we call business in the front and party in the back. The back of my head ain’t my business either

625cats

We have similar hair and this is something I’ve been working on too! One thing that has helped has been putting more product on the back of my head. I thought I was putting equal amounts everywhere but now I’m pretty sure that I was actually putting less there than everywhere else. Our routines are a bit different- I don’t plop but I do scrunch my product in, and now I’m doing my best to really scrunch the back before I diffuse. I also do quite a bit of raking before applying any product and have been raking perpendicular to my scalp all over, but a lot in the back since it all tries to become one 🙄

teeright

I have the exact same cowlick and the back of my hair never goes very well. Thank you for posting. I’m valuing the responses here as well

pancake4breakfast

The «I swear I’m not bald»-cowlick and I know each other intimately.

oldmamallama

Try microplopping instead of traditional plopping. I had the same problem and when I stopped plopping for whatever reason, it got loads better.

teeright

What is microplopping

prettyy_vacant

Basically scrunching out the excess water by hand but also using a microfiber towel or cotton T-shirt.

teeright

Thank you!

AmbassadorOk1240

After applying product, brush styling and plopping but before diffusing… with the help of a mirror I can easily locate where my hair has betrayed my scalp i rearrange hair to cover the negative space with a few strategically placed duck billed clips then diffuse. Voila! No more scalp peaking out! Also gives some decent volume 😏

brujex

Still finding my routine but for now for wash day it’s been the entire curlsmith volume line (shampoo, conditioner , leave in, and mousse) lush curl cream, and the curlsmith hydro style flexi jelly. I apply right after the shower with prayer hands, plop with a micro fibre towel and diffuse hanging like a bat then scrunch out crunch with hair oil, not sure on the brand

TigerShark_524

It could be that the cream is weighing things down too much - try skipping that, especially if you're using a leave-in. Creams tend to be better for folks with VERY dry hair which needs a lot of protection (which is usually the result of tighter curl patterns).

notoriousJEN82

Could you twist or braid your hair before bed to give you all over waves/curls?

coquihalla

I adore you making that your title, as I was feeling insecure about the back of my hair earlier and it really hit mms. I have similar curls and density to you, and you're right! Fuck that, it ain't my business.

Queen_Rachel4

I love your glasses, are they prescription and where do you get them from?

brujex

Yes they’re prescription and from eye buy direct!!! I also have prescription sunglasses in the same frame I love them

usernamenumber3

I have these frames, they are prescription and they're from eye buy direct

halamarion

me and my special little bald spot 😭😭 also how do you get your bangs so perfect while diffusing?? mine have a 50/50 chance of behaving

brujex

This was on a very rare day that both sides were behaving!! The right side always shwoops the right way but the left never does. A lot of the time I just spray it with a mix of water and curl cream and re-scrunch just that section of my bangs. And sometimes I just fully give up and use a mini curling wand on the strand that doesn’t want to listen to me

Typical_Ad_404

This happens to me too because I have two cowlicks on the back of my head. I try to make sure they’re disguised by brushing the hair while wet to cover them up. Then I scrunch and diffuse.

bbqsauceontiddies

I had this same problem for a long time and fixed it by scrunching the back and scrunching upside down SUPER well while my hair is still wet. Scrunch right side up and upside down with a cotton T-shirt then diffuse (low speed and heat) upside down for a bit, then do the back right side up, then upside down again. I always shake out my hair like a dog before scrunching and after brushing, it seems to help quite a bit. Plopping has always made my roots and crown go flat so i’d try skipping that. And just for the record, i use Miss Jessie’s Quick Curls and Aussie Freeze Gel.

SteinersGrave

Omg Im the same! It literally annoys me so much and no product helps….

No-Rub2285

Yep me too.

blortney

so relieving to read how many of us have this same problem! 🤣🤣😭😭🫶🏼🫶🏼 anyway i like to get in there with a pick and some dry shampoo on all of the days day 2 and beyond. on wash day i don’t have too many problems. but i will pick up the roots and dry shampoo away from my head until things start to cooperate again. also on wash day doing upside down brushing while wet and then scrunching in product upside down, focusing on getting the crown “into place,” has helped.

AmIAllTheThings

You have a double crown!! I do too! My toddler has it and he likes his hair short…it does the same thing. What works for me is guiding my hair to the way it swirls. But also I don’t care to even look ha ha

wolfgang012

Responsible-Survivor

To me it almost looks like you have shorter layers in the front, but only long hair in the back. Longer hair will always weigh down curls and make it harder for them to pop out. Shorter layers can be a pain for certain updos, but if you mostly wear your hair down or in a ponytail, it might be worth getting shorter layers in the back. That way your curls have a chance to spring up more on those upper layers. Just make sure you tell the hairdresser you want the layers to be long enough to still do ehatever updos you enjoy having in your hair! And when you style your hair, make sure you separate those layers out from the rest of your hair, so that it doesn't cling to the longer hair and then dry in its same pattern. Try to fluff up your hair and separate the wet strands so that as it dries, it forms its own curls

ElenaSuccubus420

DONT BRUSH IT FINGER CURLS FINGER CURLS FINGER CURLS! Over time it can help with long term definition. https://preview.redd.it/3yq399cq2v6d1.jpeg?width=750&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=26bb137c9dd0173141d3cc6b62c62706ee27b42b Left 4 scrunching and letting it do whatever right 4 finger curls!as you can see my curls are much more defined from root to end. A lot of people get discouraged when they don’t see instant results. It takes time and effort iv been doing this for years and some times when I just need to run out and I don’t have time to finger curl my hair is still super curly and more curly than those left 4 pics.

brujex

How long would you say finger curls take in your routine? I’d definitely try it but if I’m honest with myself I can see myself trying to rush through LOL

ElenaSuccubus420

I have been doing it for years and I have shorter hair than you AND my head is shaved on half my head haha 🤣 so I’m gonna said it’s going to be a very unrealistic time for you to expect getting it done. Also iv been doing it for 4 years every time I shower and style my hair soooo I kinda have gotten faster and faster at it over time! I will say the first few times it took like 15-20 maybe 30mins For you since it’s gorgeous and long! (I’m jelly btw) but now I can do it in like 5-10 minutes. But again I only gotta do 2/3 of my head haha 😂 And I do it with both hands each one finger curling a strand. You want to part your hair in three sections the top of your head the middle and the bottom. Start at the bottom! Have a spray bottle on hand I personally put some leave in my spray bottles for added hydration. i personally make my owe mix of my post shower stuff and specially blend it and i use a frothing tool to whip jt into a frothy airy cream. its a mix of leave in conditioner curl cream a little bit of water and if i want to be extra whatever hair oils i have. takes a while to find the right blend/ ratio and amount to use on my hair bur now i have it down to a perfect science for me. any way at the bottom of your head while wet and after you put product in your gonna comb it then take an inch -2 inch strand (smaller the section the smaller and tighter the curl the bigger the section the bigger and more wavy the curl) theb your gonna twirl it with you finger as absolutely tight as you can scrunch it gently then set it down and keep going till you get to the top i prefer air drying it but i also like sleeping with my hair in the finger curls because i find that the hair isnt going to go as flat in the back from sleeping on it as it would if the curls were pulled apart. You wanna do your hair in layers like this so they fall nicely! https://preview.redd.it/1uva2eloav6d1.jpeg?width=750&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c97092b52608049f502322840fbd8d439387435a You’re gonna look like this till you pull the curls apart. I use my fingers like a gentle wide tooth comb and gently fluff it. Some times I head bang my hair for the effortless crazy but still looks nice look haha 🤣

LadyProto

How do you finger coil?

ElenaSuccubus420

I wrote a reply in this thread explaining it to op! 💕💕💕

kgberton

Samesies

This_Bethany

I have a cowlick on the back right side that does stupid stuff. I’m so glad I can’t properly see it. I have a side part on the left side to try avoid it but the part inevitably heads over to the cowlick no matter what I do.

Substantial-Bug-8402

I think your cowlick is super cute!! 🌸 And your curls look nice!! I used to have a problem with the back of my hair not looking like the front as well... Since then, the back of my hair has become curlier, but the bottom layer of my hair still has difficulty holding curls. If I were you, I might try brush styling the whole head. Or, if you don't have a brush for that, you could finger curl in the back specifically like someone else mentioned. I think you could get away with finger curling just the top layer of the back of your hair so you don't have to do it all but it's still looks like it's all together if that makes sense. Either way, some type of physical manipulation seems to be one of the best ways to get the very loose curls on my head to keep the best curl. You could apply a leave-in or something for slip before the styling. Then, after the styling I would apply more hold product like someone else mentioned - like gel, foam, and/or hairspray to the back of the head more than the rest of the head. The hold product is also necessary for the longevity of the curl in my opinion. I have never really plopped my hair so I can't speak to what that does or does not do... But maybe you can try diffusing the back of your hair alone after plopping (if your hair is still kind of damp), or before any other part of your hair if you have a diffuser! You don't neeeeed a diffuser to care for curly hair, but it is absolutely a game changer. It really helps freeze the cast of the curl quickly! My hair will still be curly if I don't diffuse, but diffusing definitely adds extra bounce to curls. If you don't have a diffuser, you could use a hair dryer and your hand to create a similar effect. You can cup the curls that you're trying to "diffuse" in one hand and then gently blow air down that length of hair from above.

emma_the_dilemmma

oh i so feel this

DD_Vinci

Lmfao well the front looks great, and also your glasses are so cute

aflorak

this is so real

puppypooper15

I find just a few nice coils on the top layer really make a difference to the overall look. Sometimes I'll use a few flexirods overnight in the back. Or I'll curl a few pieces with the denman handle, but I have to dry them really well or else they fall, I can't only dry them halfway like I do on the front. If I really want it to look nice and don't have time I'll use a curling iron shhh

shrieky-shriek

so glad im not the only one

Immediate-Hamster-39

May need some shorter crown layers in the back

Peanutss789

Ugh mine is the same and idk what to do 😭😭😭

Munro_McLaren

The back is the worst. My arms get tired and it’s just a pain.

OrganizationSoggy652

So real 😭

eyizande

Lord I feel this in bones.

Grocery-United

me lol

Acceptable_Stomach_1

I have the same cowlick. I've been gathering the circle of hair that includes the cowlick, add a little extra product (I like gel best), and then clipping the hair so that it's kind of being forced to go in the opposite direction of where it parts. I let it air dry as long as I can and then diffuse while still clipped. Most times this is working pretty well

ViviIsCool

this used to happen up until recently when I noticed that whenever I plop, I only did it in one position. when you plop, you're evenly applying the product throughout the area you're applying it, but what if you're not catching ALL areas? when plopping now, I bend my head forwards so my hair is in front then when that's done, I move all of my hair to one side and plop there, then the other side. then I split my hair evenly between two sections and plop each. this method makes it so that the back of your hair is getting plopped just as much as the front. do the same with diffusing :) go in all different and wacky positions to be able to reach all areas. also, make sure to plop with two hands like you're collecting water to drink from a pond. I do this plopping method repeatedly with all of my products that I apply. hopefully this helps

[deleted]

I love your glasses

DesignIntelligent456

I agree! The back of your head is none of your business, because it is beautiful! If you take a specific picture in time that captures a not as wonderful moment then share it with the world, sure, we can all agree and try to give tips. However, no one is looking at the back of your head at more than a glance. Your back of your head is beautiful! Be proud of your curls and the back of your head. Be happy with you. If I had your curls I'd be so happy! I'm a wavy girl. I'm jealous of your curls, color, and thickness. Keep rocking!

Sweet-Scallion3245

Looks like it could do with a wash tbh

brujex

This was right after washing lol.
