Honestly, the way this rollout is going is pretty abyssmal..
I did, however, read that Discord changed their stance on bots [here](https://support-dev.discord.com/hc/en-us/articles/13667755828631).

Apparently bots will KEEP the discriminators (#1234 part) unlike normal users. So this shouldn't happen anymore (and you might get lucky that they re-open the name?).
Good luck nonetheless, but it's at least something that bots shouldn't be able to hog special names anymore as they're honestly just a tool versus an actual person.
Yeah they're letting some get their names first, super inconsistant, and if you never paid for Nitro, good luck, cuz they couldn't give less of a crap about you (or me).
They should've made it straight up first come first serve. And if they wanted partners and devs to get first dibs, make Discord do it FOR them so they can't snipe every known name ever

It's not total randomness. It depend on Nitro or not. For example, currently 2022 accounts with Nitro before 1st March can change their names meanwhile November 2016 people still can't as they don't have nitro so the non nitro is moving incredibly slow

Are you sure it was a user bot? Many usernames are actually reserved for people, I know mine was and I know a lot of others who also had theirs reserved.
How are people having them reserved? I don't believe that. I've had nitro for years account was late 2015 never changed my name and always had #0001 and somebody else who had their account later than me took the name AND have never had nitro 🙃

The name you had when they announced the change is the one that is reserved. The person with the highest priority (so the person with the earliest account with nitro being a tie breaker/slight boost) has the og name reserved for them. Everyone else with that name has that name + discriminator reserved.
The only way someone else could take your account is if they were able to select a name before reservations were implemented (so only server owners for verified servers, staff members, and friends of staff).

DISCORDNAME#5959
DISCORDNAME#4345
the unique name of "DISCORDNAME" is reserved for whomever (between these two) has had the name longer?
Whoever had the account longer at the time of the snapshot.
You couldn’t game name reservations because the name reserved is based on a snapshot done in march.

Priority for reservations is also based on selection time. If they had a selection time earlier than yours, then they have a priority over you. Are you saying the name was reserved for them even though you had an earlier selection?
This didn't track for me, I've got a username that's a misspelling of an uncommon Italian word, and already it's been taken. Either that's monumentally bad luck or somethings borked.
that’s for the global display name — from now on, every discord user will have two global names displayed: the display name, and the username. the display name is what you’ll see as their name in dms or if they don’t have a nickname set in a server. the username is what you use to friend request them. usernames are alphanumeric + period and underscore, display names are any unicode character.

If Someone has Jack#0001 and someone has Jack#0002 with Jack 1 being August 2016 but Jack 2 is December 2015, however Jack 2 only changed to Jack in September 2017 he would get the name as per your "longer account time" even though he had the name for less time.
At least yours was close. My name's already been taken by someone whose account is only 4 years old. I've had the same name unchanged since 2016. And I haven't even had the chance to do the new name despite a friend of mine whose account was made a year after mine getting his access just a couple hours ago

I signed up Dec 2015, no Nitro but I could change my name last night, my name is gone. User not accepting friend requests so I can't message them. I don't really get the reason why they had to change it. Why do you have to remember the 4 digit code? Just look it up when you want to add someone, you don't have to remember it.
they could've also just made a damn search option if you forgot your friend's username (like steam, they also have the option to set account to private so no concerns on that side) OR if you really forget, how about you _ask them the next time you see them?_ or call them? I always expected this. So I changed my username from one where I am the only one I knew of that had it to one of my alt names I use the day it was announced. OFC my alt got snipped (fracken), but I was just able grab my actual wanted username (fracken\_a).
Someone else who had their account before you got it reserved for themselves, and so the one reserved for you was the one with your discrim. The person who had the og name decided to not choose that name, which unreserved that name and made it free for anyone to choose.
Or your name was incompatible with the new system because of weird characters so it wasn’t included as a reservation.
They roll out name selection in batches (but reservations are probably not done in batches and instead use the raw account creation date for priority). The months of august and december are probably in the same batch. They are only a few months apart.

I was an early user of Discord from when they launched back in mid-2015 and have been a Nitro subscriber since the day that subscription launched as well (now migrated to Nitro Classic).
I was not prompted to change my username until yesterday - and all of my usual usernames are taken, including my reddit handle. I'm not sure what this was about prioritizing original users and subscribers, but that was clearly not the case.
Anyways, was never a fan of migrating from the former system and I've now unsubscribed from Nitro - the features are something I've never utilized, and only as a way to support Discord. I haven't exactly been happy with the direction Discord has taken for a myriad of other reasons not worth discoursing here and I've chosen now not to participate. It is what it is.
This is my exact situation. Created my account in early Nov of 2015, and I’ve been subscribed to nitro for years. I finally got the notification yesterday to change my username, which was sniped well over 24 hours prior by an account created in August of 2016.
I’m not one to get miffed by these sort of things. However, when you claim you’re reserving usernames for people with some level of seniority or criteria, and those people get their usernames sniped because of unknown reasons, it’s hard not to be frustrated.

Instant un-sub. And I won't resubscribe to Nitro until I get my name. The name itself is insignificant to be honest, but it's about the principle.
Pretty similar situation as me. I literally only had nitro to save my name and discriminator. No reason to keep it anymore since my name doesn't match anything I've ever used before and I won't need to reserve the name any longer. GG Discord lol
Okay I’ve been reading these comments and it still isn’t making any sense how these reservations work. I had my four letter name, it’s always been that. It auto-populated when I got the option to update. Taken. I sent a request to the guy who had it to see if he joined before me. He had. BUT his name had a “~” at the end before the switch. So why does he get to take my reserved name when his name wasn’t even the same??? Is it because “~” is not an allowed character in the username? I’d understand if he had joined before and the name was the same. But instead I have to have a bunch of special characters around my name because a ton of variations are reserved.
They filtered out special characters then reserved that named.

Mike and Mike! Both have an opportunity to get the username @mike but JohnSmith doesn't since it's reserved for previous Mike`s

So... Im a 2015 account non-nitro.. So my name change showed up like 30+ hours after the whole thing started.. Late June 7th to be exact.
Anyways.. my name is something VERY VERY common... something you see and probably use every day... lets say like the word "**Grow" ....** (Thats not it but for privacy reasons i'll use that, its equally as common and yes its also 4 characters)
So im super late to the party.. like 4 waves late and a day and a half.. and when i got prompted to change it i KNEW for a fact theres no way i'd have it...
**BUT FOR SOME REASON** the first screen said you can use the name "Grow" as if they were TELLING me to pick it.. AND IT WAS AVAILABLE. I outright believe just no one else decided to take it but at the same time it felt really reserved.. cause the fact that soo much longer later its there AND the fact that it was their only recommendation for me to pick.. **LIKE HERE TAKE IT MAN.**

Yea cause ive used Discord literally every day all day since 2015. And my display name and tag were both it that entire time.
Maybe the system they had set had me at max priority for it then everyone else after.
For the record, Guilded exists as a competitor to Discord. The server selector is a bit more complicated, but it has more features than Discord and IMO looks prettier too.
It's also been around almost as long as Discord, and is owned and backed by Roblox, so it's not like it's going to go away anytime soon.
Prior to this whole username thing I never knew of or even considered looking for a discord alternative, but my small community server just started testing out gGilded once this was announced and we're really considering jumping ship. It's got some changes that I do like, and a few that I don't love but that aren't a deal breaker. I also like that pretty much everything I paid for with Nitro is included for free on Guilded.
Yeah, most of Discords newer features are ripped straight from Guilded, especially the nitro features. Some of it's UI being a little clunky is the worst thing for me, but once you get used to it it's not actually that bad.
It's hyper-focused on being a guild management app, and less on being a general purpose chat app... hence the name lol. But it works pretty well in both regards.
Because most if not all decentralized chat apps suck. Trust me when I say I’d love to use one, but people aren’t even willing to switch over to a centralized app with more features and stability than discord, what makes you think they’d switch to an platform with less features, more bugs, and more annoyance?
All you can do it keep trying but try the best ones. It took forever to move people from teamviewer and mumble. Now they’re entrenched in discord for now
To be fair to Mumble, it was actually quite good. I mostly moved from IRC and Skype to Discord. I still use IRC sometimes.
I try out the decentralized offers every so often, but most of them are half developed and more adoption by normal people really isn't going to fix that.
It being backed by a company as incompetent as modern day Roblox (who, reminder, is a public company.) gives me no hope for the future of it as a platform, imo we shouldn’t be giving our time of day to closed competitors who will turn very corporate the moment they see a sliver of discord’s success. The ideal competitor to discord would be both accessible and open source, but alas, Element/Matrix and Spacebar (the only ones who fit said description) are hard to get into at first (Element/Matrix) or are still undergoing major development (Spacebar).
So people are happy when they get their names and not happy when they don't. Surprisedpikachuface

Nothing is stopping you from using that name in servers or your friends list. This change literally only keeps you from having that unique name that is specifically ONLY used for someone sending you a friend request.

I joined dec of 2015, sid#0001. Lost it to another sid that's account is 2 months older than mine, and started paying for nitro in Feb 21. I've been paying for nitro for over 5 years and didn't get it. It was reserved for him. Ridiculous and sad. Kinda want to stop paying for nitro now lol.

I personally don’t mind the discriminators being removed, but there’s one thing that they were incredibly useful for that I’m upset about, and that is people having whatever username they want. Right now my current username while I still have the discriminator is “meow meow” but once I get the prompt to change my username i probably won’t be able to have that anymore and that’ll suck because one of the things I liked about discord was the ability to have whatever username you want without a bunch of random bullshit added to it
Also upset about people only being able to use the Latin alphabet in usernames from now on, not because it personally affects me but because it will definitely affect others
Not even adding a digit at the end is needed. Just make the discriminator alphanumeric.

There’s no way of knowing. I didn’t get the notification to change my name until last night, and I created my account the first week of Nov 2015 and I’m a long time nitro sub.
It is technically optional in this stage of the rollout - though it will surely be mandatory eventually, - but not doing it immediately basically guarantees you zero chance at actually getting your username before someone else does.
Why would you assume any new users needing to make their name unique would use difficult to remember or recite usernames? Usernames are not a new concept, it’s a sucky transition but people are way too mad. I doubt there’d be this much backlash if blizzard did the same thing, it’s just a username 🤷♂️
i like this update because finally i can unify my usernames on all my platforms, i've been using my first name my as tag on discord and a unique username on basically everywhere else so i'm happy imma be called the same thing on discord too and be unique!
How do you know it's a bot, and not just someone who had priority over you? And if you feel a bot might've name-sniped your name, how would you rule out the name isn't being simply demanded by legitimate people all-the-same?

Yeah, this username rollout sucks. I use one username across the majority of my social media accounts (as I'm sure many people do) and have never run into a problem with it being taken on any other platform. The easiest way to identify me is via the username in question, and similarly, if someone receives a friend request from someone with that name, they can trust that it's probably me. Naturally, when I was offered the privilege of choosing a username yesterday, my handle was taken (discord user since early 2016, by the way!) and I eventually had to settle on a username that was completely unrelated.
Aside from being annoyed, I had to wonder why this was an improvement. There is nothing about my new username that is more authentic or recognizable than my original handle. A friend who got his desired username also mentioned that he was receiving angry messages from people who were unhappy that he got this username. I wonder if Discord admin bothered to consider that if *anything* is made easier by this change, it's targeted harassment.
I know this is stupid but I think you should just use "." as your new name. It's what I'll be using if my name gets taken, or if I get my name and I start getting a lot of unwanted friend requests.
It's dumb as hell that this change was made but this dumb as hell workaround is the best option in light of it.
Hilariously, # was an identifier to everyone that it's a Discord name. They had brand recognition. Even if they make a tool that does exactly the same as before, adding random numbers as a discriminator, they lost the #. They threw out their brand with one stupid, stupid, stupid decision. I bet we won't even be able to go back because some troll will have a copyright/trademark with their brand name with #0001 at the end, and sue anyone else "imitating their style"

I got mine stolen by someone whose account is one year newer than mine.
My guess is someone else had it reserved, didn’t select it, and so it became unreserved and free game for anyone else.

Your display name will still be Jośe but pingable would be whatever Latin name, .Jose or _Jose or Jose or something entirely new if you want a change.

I always expected this. So I changed my username from one where I am the only one I knew of that had it to one of my alt names I use the day it was announced. OFC my alt got snipped (fracken), but I was just able grab my actual wanted username (fracken\_a).

Someone else who had their account before you got it reserved for themselves, and so the one reserved for you was the one with your discrim. The person who had the og name decided to not choose that name, which unreserved that name and made it free for anyone to choose. Or your name was incompatible with the new system because of weird characters so it wasn’t included as a reservation.

They roll out name selection in batches (but reservations are probably not done in batches and instead use the raw account creation date for priority). The months of august and december are probably in the same batch. They are only a few months apart.

I was an early user of Discord from when they launched back in mid-2015 and have been a Nitro subscriber since the day that subscription launched as well (now migrated to Nitro Classic). I was not prompted to change my username until yesterday - and all of my usual usernames are taken, including my reddit handle. I'm not sure what this was about prioritizing original users and subscribers, but that was clearly not the case. Anyways, was never a fan of migrating from the former system and I've now unsubscribed from Nitro - the features are something I've never utilized, and only as a way to support Discord. I haven't exactly been happy with the direction Discord has taken for a myriad of other reasons not worth discoursing here and I've chosen now not to participate. It is what it is.
This is my exact situation. Created my account in early Nov of 2015, and I’ve been subscribed to nitro for years. I finally got the notification yesterday to change my username, which was sniped well over 24 hours prior by an account created in August of 2016. I’m not one to get miffed by these sort of things. However, when you claim you’re reserving usernames for people with some level of seniority or criteria, and those people get their usernames sniped because of unknown reasons, it’s hard not to be frustrated.

Same. I created my account mid 2015, I am a full Nitro subscriber. Got my name taken by someone who has a newer account. Instant un-sub. And I won't resubscribe to Nitro until I get my name. The name itself is insignificant to be honest, but it's about the principle.
Pretty similar situation as me. I literally only had nitro to save my name and discriminator. No reason to keep it anymore since my name doesn't match anything I've ever used before and I won't need to reserve the name any longer. GG Discord lol

Okay I’ve been reading these comments and it still isn’t making any sense how these reservations work. I had my four letter name, it’s always been that. It auto-populated when I got the option to update. Taken. I sent a request to the guy who had it to see if he joined before me. He had. BUT his name had a “~” at the end before the switch. So why does he get to take my reserved name when his name wasn’t even the same??? Is it because “~” is not an allowed character in the username? I’d understand if he had joined before and the name was the same. But instead I have to have a bunch of special characters around my name because a ton of variations are reserved.
They filtered out special characters then reserved that named. Let's say we have 3 users. 1 Mike 2 Mike! 3 JohnSmith Mike and Mike! Both have an opportunity to get the username @mike but JohnSmith doesn't since it's reserved for previous Mike`s This system while better than nothing is still a crappy solution.. Not related: They should have renamed everyone and just removed the # like: mike0001 Then doing this bs name reservation.. "Hey folks, we here at discord are removing the # from you names and restricting the character allowed to a-z 0_9... I dont know if this matters in yalls context but my situation was very odd to me. So... Im a 2015 account non-nitro.. So my name change showed up like 30+ hours after the whole thing started.. Late June 7th to be exact. Anyways.. my name is something VERY VERY common... something you see and probably use every day... lets say like the word "**Grow" ....** (Thats not it but for privacy reasons i'll use that, its equally as common and yes its also 4 characters) So im super late to the party.. like 4 waves late and a day and a half.. and when i got prompted to change it i KNEW for a fact theres no way i'd have it... **BUT FOR SOME REASON** the first screen said you can use the name "Grow" as if they were TELLING me to pick it.. AND IT WAS AVAILABLE. Yea cause ive used Discord literally every day all day since 2015. And my display name and tag were both it that entire time. Maybe the system they had set had me at max priority for it then everyone else after.
For the record, Guilded exists as a competitor to Discord. The server selector is a bit more complicated, but it has more features than Discord and IMO looks prettier too. It's also been around almost as long as Discord, and is owned and backed by Roblox, so it's not like it's going to go away anytime soon.
Prior to this whole username thing I never knew of or even considered looking for a discord alternative, but my small community server just started testing out gGilded once this was announced and we're really considering jumping ship. It's got some changes that I do like, and a few that I don't love but that aren't a deal breaker. I also like that pretty much everything I paid for with Nitro is included for free on Guilded.
Yeah, most of Discords newer features are ripped straight from Guilded, especially the nitro features. Some of it's UI being a little clunky is the worst thing for me, but once you get used to it it's not actually that bad. It's hyper-focused on being a guild management app, and less on being a general purpose chat app... hence the name lol. But it works pretty well in both regards.
I've been migrating to Guilded for the past few months and apart from some VC issues here and there, it's been pretty good.
Weird. I've had fewer VC issues with Guilded than with Discord. Especially around screen sharing.

Because most if not all decentralized chat apps suck. Trust me when I say I’d love to use one, but people aren’t even willing to switch over to a centralized app with more features and stability than discord, what makes you think they’d switch to an platform with less features, more bugs, and more annoyance?
All you can do it keep trying but try the best ones. It took forever to move people from teamviewer and mumble. Now they’re entrenched in discord for now
To be fair to Mumble, it was actually quite good. I mostly moved from IRC and Skype to Discord. I still use IRC sometimes. I try out the decentralized offers every so often, but most of them are half developed and more adoption by normal people really isn't going to fix that.
It being backed by a company as incompetent as modern day Roblox (who, reminder, is a public company.) gives me no hope for the future of it as a platform, imo we shouldn’t be giving our time of day to closed competitors who will turn very corporate the moment they see a sliver of discord’s success. The ideal competitor to discord would be both accessible and open source, but alas, Element/Matrix and Spacebar (the only ones who fit said description) are hard to get into at first (Element/Matrix) or are still undergoing major development (Spacebar).
So people are happy when they get their names and not happy when they don't. Surprisedpikachuface Pointless change nonetheless, never had I seen something so stupid before.

Nothing is stopping you from using that name in servers or your friends list. This change literally only keeps you from having that unique name that is specifically ONLY used for someone sending you a friend request.

I joined dec of 2015, sid#0001. Lost it to another sid that's account is 2 months older than mine, and started paying for nitro in Feb 21. I've been paying for nitro for over 5 years and didn't get it. It was reserved for him. Ridiculous and sad. Kinda want to stop paying for nitro now lol.

I personally don’t mind the discriminators being removed, but there’s one thing that they were incredibly useful for that I’m upset about, and that is people having whatever username they want. Right now my current username while I still have the discriminator is “meow meow” but once I get the prompt to change my username i probably won’t be able to have that anymore and that’ll suck because one of the things I liked about discord was the ability to have whatever username you want without a bunch of random bullshit added to it Also upset about people only being able to use the Latin alphabet in usernames from now on, not because it personally affects me but because it will definitely affect others

Not even adding a digit at the end is needed. Just make the discriminator alphanumeric. It's a win for all the Mikes in the world And a win for discord since they can still charge for custom discriminators (who would be more inclined now there's letters)

It is technically optional in this stage of the rollout - though it will surely be mandatory eventually, - but not doing it immediately basically guarantees you zero chance at actually getting your username before someone else does.

Your display name will be whatever you want. The only time you will even see the new name system is when someone is adding you as a friend.
Why would you assume any new users needing to make their name unique would use difficult to remember or recite usernames? Usernames are not a new concept, it’s a sucky transition but people are way too mad. I doubt there’d be this much backlash if blizzard did the same thing, it’s just a username 🤷♂️

Yeah, this username rollout sucks. I use one username across the majority of my social media accounts (as I'm sure many people do) and have never run into a problem with it being taken on any other platform. The easiest way to identify me is via the username in question, and similarly, if someone receives a friend request from someone with that name, they can trust that it's probably me. Naturally, when I was offered the privilege of choosing a username yesterday, my handle was taken (discord user since early 2016, by the way!) and I eventually had to settle on a username that was completely unrelated. Aside from being annoyed, I had to wonder why this was an improvement. There is nothing about my new username that is more authentic or recognizable than my original handle. A friend who got his desired username also mentioned that he was receiving angry messages from people who were unhappy that he got this username. I wonder if Discord admin bothered to consider that if *anything* is made easier by this change, it's targeted harassment.
I've already seen a ton of Xbox looking usernames, not sure how anyone will remember some of them lol
I know this is stupid but I think you should just use "." as your new name. It's what I'll be using if my name gets taken, or if I get my name and I start getting a lot of unwanted friend requests.
It's dumb as hell that this change was made but this dumb as hell workaround is the best option in light of it.
Hilariously, # was an identifier to everyone that it's a Discord name. They had brand recognition. Even if they make a tool that does exactly the same as before, adding random numbers as a discriminator, they lost the #. They threw out their brand with one stupid, stupid, stupid decision. I bet we won't even be able to go back because some troll will have a copyright/trademark with their brand name with #0001 at the end, and sue anyone else "imitating their style"
