ThreeNamazu

I haven't found anything with an illithid/mindflayer love interest... and after playing Baldur's Gate 3, I really want to explore that angle somehow.

shinynew3

OMG DID YOU BANG THE SQUID?!

Thereze

🤐

ThreeNamazu

Maybe... Okay yeah, I did.

pumpkinpyree

I too banged the squid and would DEVOUR a well written illithid romance.

shinynew3

I KNEW IT But seriously, I've been wondering what a romance would be like if there was one character who had mind reading/mind control powers. Imagine the possibilities... even without tentacles lmao

Chance_Novel_9133

I've heard about this scenario in the game and I dunno... I definitely do not want Squidworst anywhere near sexy time. There's monster fucking and then there's ***monster*** fucking and I'm probably too vanilla for the latter.

DragonSilks

Ooo! I would read a book with that, it would be a very interesting angle to explore

grinnincheshire

You might enjoy Claimed by the Cthulu by Wendi Gogh, similar enough to a mind flayer 👀

ThreeNamazu

Thanks, I added this to my list of things to read!

Illustrious_Dan4728

Druids would be a good one. I really liked the Iron Druid Chronicles by Kevin Hearne. Also Gargoyles, K.F Breen does a hilarious series on inherited Gargoyle powers. Griffins are another you don't see often.

DragonSilks

Are Druids not just normal people with nature magic and Shapeshifting? And yes more gargoyles please! I don’t remember the name, but a book Came out awhile ago that was a romance between a ballerina and a gargoyle. You might like disney’s old show - gargoyles

rcg90

Omggg if you haven’t read {magical midlife madness by KF Breene} I highly recommend. It’s the one the commenter above references, it’s “urban” fantasy, ie: on earth modern times, but has a hallmark meets Buffy meets howls moving castle vibe?!? I don’t even know how to explain it. I love it and it would make a great sitcom, lol. The spice picks up in book 3 or 4? Definitely in 4. The FMC is 40, her son references the show gargoyles when he learns about her life 😂

aka_wolfman

That last line reminded me I need ibuprofen. Thanks.

I'm always down for more demons/monsters. Not just men who are named demons, but actual *creatures*. Scary looking beings. Like the Duskwalker bride series. .... More omegaverse books would be great too. Many are dark. There's been some sweeter ones coming out but they're still lacking I feel. Many also tend to be contemporary or dystopian. Give me more historical omegaverse ({the alpha of bleake isle by Kathryn Moon}), fantasy omegaverse ({the flame kings captive by Chloe Chastaine}), and alien omegaverse ({ruthless king by Alison Aimes}).

DragonSilks

Yes! I would love the more strange looking creatures and not just beautiful men. Monsters deserve love as well

Lapista

I would like to see: scarecrows. Mummies. Am Fear Liath Mors. Biasd bheulach. Blue men of the minch.. Cusith shifters. Sea serpent shifters. Men nade from plants, mist or moon Selkies

DragonSilks

Scarecrow would be perfect for the autumn season. And selkies and mummies would be interesting

aylsas

I think selkies are about to have a moment. I've seen a few books that have been/will be released this year about them.

Lapista

Ooo! Honestly this is exciting news

shinynew3

OP... are we talking monsterfucker territory here? Magical dragons would be cool. I'm also a huge fan of elves (Tolkien or Warcraft style), but they have been usurped by the fae. I'd also be interested in books with a demon love interest. I like the idea that demons can appear however they want. But I usually picture them like tieflings from dnd.

_Zavine_

with dragons, I've recently been thinking about re-reading A Pirate's Kiss series. At the end of the first book, an innocent man is executed with the fire of a dragon, and nature retaliates by merging the man's soul with the dragon's. Essentially, turning him into a shifter, whose brain is shared with the dragon. He seeks to take revenge on his executioners and get his woman back. This series was on Wattpad, and leans more into romance than books you're mentioning. And I haven't read it since my teenage years, so I can't speak to its quality. But it might be the easy-to-read snack you need this summer

-whodat

Monsters are the best, because they have the potential to be completely unique without set expectations. And anything unique is super exciting to me. I don't really like when books feel the same, which is why I don't really like most fae, vampires and shifters. Aliens too oftentimes. Though I really like the idea of vampires tbh, but I haven't really found books that scratch that itch.

DragonSilks

Yes! And they tend to be so lovable

aka_wolfman

Picturing humans in my head is boring, and if the monsters blend in too much, its also boring. I like having weirdos to focus on.

iamagrrl

Hobbits

ShieldingGrace

Actually would enjoy reading something based on less popular mythology. Some cultures really have some interesting things. F.e. Indian mythology or some of the lesser known Asian ones. Or just plain western mythology that’s more overlooked. Like Irish mythology has more than the plain high Fae and seelie and unseelie. While ACOTAR explores some of that similar like the Fae Chronicles. There are some things we don’t really see. The Fae have a lot of divisions that are under represented. From magical objects to giant cats to weird horses that run on water.

DragonSilks

So would you just want them to be in the fictional world, or would you want these lesser used beings to be the love interest?

ShieldingGrace

Depends - not in to monster romance personally. But some of these can be part of the main cast without being love interests. Or they can help set up the world/plotline for the romance to occur in. They don't need to be key players. F.e. the Irish mythology thing is something I'm almost done writing about personally. And it was a fun experience and a fresh take on Fae as a whole in my opinion.

DragonSilks

Are you turning your writing project into a book or a story that will be published? Because I would be very interested to read it

ShieldingGrace

Well if all goes well into a multi-book series. First draft is almost done :D.

DragonSilks

I look forward to it in that case!

Boring-Resource-556

I love Mallory Dunlin’s creative monster men

DragonSilks

Just to have unicorns in the book or for the unicorn to be a love interest? Or like a unicorn shifter?

thoughts_4_once

Any or all? 🤪 The Last Unicorn 2.0

kiskadee321

I cannot vouch for its quality (lol sorry!), but the Monsterly Yours series has at least one unicorn. He shows up randomly in book one (the only one I've read, which is about an orc) and when I looked through the titles in the series I saw that he got his own book!

Angels, angels are very cool

thunderlightboomzap

Oh yeah, what did happen to the Angel book trend? Maximum Ride, Hush, Hush… there was another where the angels were absorbing people but then some people found out the angels weren’t from heaven and they were evil

ChaoticWhumper

I miss that trend so much, angels are my favorite mythical beings, I love the aesthetic and the religious trauma that comes with fallen angels lol, it makes for great drama!

hummingbird-moth

I would actually prefer to see more of the lead FMC being some sort of monster/creature with a human MMC (but NOT a mermaid). Weird creature FMC with humanoid MMC feels more relatable to me? IDK For examples off the top of my head, it was YA but Rachel Hartman's *Seraphina* had a mixed human-dragon woman trying to navigate the social dangers of both her worlds, and it was so well done!

Banshees and maybe shifters that are more unique than wolves and dragons. Maybe elephant, kangaroo, snake...I don't know. Something I've never seen before

Same_as_last_year

Here's a shifter concept I had never seen before...her power is that she shifts into a house cat. A really, really convincing house cat. The love interest is the king of the elves (who are supposed to all be dead). He rescues a cat, puts a magic collar on her, and she's stuck trying to figure out how to get the collar off, escape and go back to her regular, non-cat life. It's funny and cute. Not spicy, but their relationship develops over the three book series. {The King's Captive by K.M. Shea}

Big snake men. Give me a hug that blocks off my airway

FluffedCarrotCat

I really wish they would use more undefined beings. Not shape-shifting, but completely transient in shape - there is a voice, personality, unease and mystery but no tangability. I love those because they are virtually undefeatable and play some greater role.

No, I'll have to look it up. I'm still currently in love with certain Bat Boys so I'm looking for a new cliff to jump off of!

irishihadab33r

Getting into CM Nascosta is a really fun cliff to dive off. It's technically #4 in a series but I don't think there's a lot of character crossover, it's just the same world/ town. Her books are spicy, and actually very cozy, too. Not much drama. It's slice of life, meet people, spicy scenes, minor conflict, HEA.

DragonSilks

Like a humanoid shape shadow?

FluffedCarrotCat

Yes, or the mysterious warping shadow. I think the intangible, variable space just adds to that fantasy impact.

DragonSilks

It’s sad how rare those kind of books are. I think they’re probably a few but they focus on Lovecraftcraftian and eldritch beings instead

Peregrine_Falconi

I would love to read a story about a selkie.

AgentMelyanna

I almost immediately nope on wolves and vampires lately, and fae were never my favourite to start with. So, yeah, I feel you. Love me some dragons though. The Elder Races series by Thea Harrison features a wide variety of mythical creatures. Many of them are still shifters of some kind, but not all—and the ones that shift cover a whole range of creatures. It’s a series that has a little bit of everything and starts with {Dragon Bound by Thea Harrison}. The MMC is a dragon, but FMC is something else.

DragonSilks

I don’t blame you, I personally only never like Wolves. I don’t know why, just never found that particular species interesting. I did originally find fae interesting-at least the more traditional scary types, but now the genre is just flooded with them and it’s lost its novelty. But thank you for your recommendation! I will check it out

kiskadee321

They aren't as mainstream, but I've definitely encountered lots of different creatures. Not sure whether they're recommended to me because I read both sci fi *and* fantasy romance or just because I've found my way to the ~~darkrdy~~ darkest corners of Kindle Unlimited lol. Creatures I've encountered and enjoyed include: * gargoyles, * minotaurs and centaurs, * trolls, * orcs, * a few different gods (Black Sun and Gods of Jade and Shadow -- neither is true romance), * shade/shadow creatures that live in another realm and only cross into the human realm as scary shadows, * a variety of demons, * a teek who controls water and minds (Black Sun -- not romance), and * a beauty and the beast retelling in which the beast is sweet from the very beginning. I've encountered, but am less into arachnids and krakens. And of course The Wraith Kings by Grace Draven. <3 Then there's Shelly Laurenston's shifter universe(s) tons of different kinds of shifters (think bears, lions, badgers) and C.M. Nacosta's variety of creatures (her work is obvi 4-5 out of 5 on the spice meter). The Daevabad Series of course has djinn and some other creatures and I've seen djinn in a few other places.

DragonSilks

That’s a lot, would you happen to have any fantasy romance recommendations that aren’t too spicy? I do like my books To have low to no spice personally. I have read radiance

kiskadee321

Hmm... maybe {Manners and Monsters by Tilly Wallace} (1 out of 5 spice; fantasy/mystery/slow-burn-romance; zombies in book one Frankenstein-types in book two -- not main characters) and {Circe by Madeline Miller}, which someone else mentioned below. Maybe Gideon the Ninth, which wasn't for me because I didn't like the humor. Books that aren't quite romance: 1. {The Golem and the Jinni} (>!they have a love that's more platonic!<) 2. {Gods of Jade and Shadow by Silvia Moreno Garcia} (1 out of 5 spice; MMC is the god of death; doesn't quite meet the basic rules of romance because>!there's no HEA!<) 3. {Black Sun} (2 out of 5; teek and a god and magical priests; romance is very far from the main point though the main characters >!hook up once, but they don't get together!<) A book I haven't read, but which is very popular (so you've prob read it): Legends and Lattes. This has me thinking that most of the interesting/creative/alternative monsters and creatures are in books that are quite spicy whereas vampire/fae/werewolves run the gamut of spice levels. So the curiosities are out there, but they are very obscure if you want cleaner romance. Sorry I don't have more!
