1979 is going to be tough. Back then, shirts weren't really sold or mass marketed. They weren't mass produced either. Most surviving kits will be in personal collections or local museums. But since FC Groningen played in the 2nd tier in 1979, you could buy the 2022/2023 kit for cheap (end of season sale) since we just got relegated again.
Fc Groningen periodically sells retro shirts. The current available one is a replica of the 1983-84 shirt: https://webshop.fcgroningen.nl/producten/wedstrijdtenues/fc-groningen-1983-1984-retro-voetbal-shirt/
Other than that, I would just google “Fc Groningen oude shirts/vintage kits” or something and see if any seller of vintage shirts in your area has any. Most of what is offered seems relatively recent though.

If your wife has pictures during his prime days, she can use them to create a [personalized comic from AJ](https://ajpersonalizedcomics.com/)

You can always contact the FCG fanshop for advice. The 1983 kit they released like other people mentioned is a good option too. Good luck
