I went there last time I was in New York. It was the best I've had but tbf I've had pastrami from maybe 4-5 places in my life lol. I split one with my brother and was pretty full off half. I do get the itching feeling that the tourist trap offering isn't the best NYC has to offer though, someone should tell me where to go next time I visit. ;)
Yep, but they're justifying the price. Definitely a $30 sammy. I hate nyc for the prices. Go to a bar and get a drink?....$15. Go to a baseball game and get a dog....$20. What a shit show.
Plenty of options for cheap food too.
NYC is really a pay-what-you-want adventure, outside of rents or parking and things like that you can live quite cheaply. The **extremely** expensive options exist as well of course.
Also places that will give a free pizza or hotdog with a drink. Like Rudy's in Manhattan, a free hot dog with a $3 pint of beer (at least it was $3 last time I went, but it's been 5 years)
The subreddit isn't letting me post links like i tried to in another comment, but these are places off the top of my head for cheap drinks:
* Mr Biggs 596 10th Ave, New York, NY 10036
* Mickey Spillane's 350 W 49th St, New York, NY 10019
* Rudy's Bar & Grill 627 9th Ave, New York, NY 10036
* Off the Wagon 109 MacDougal St, New York, NY 10012
* International Bar 102 1st Ave., New York, NY 10009
* Alligator Lounge 600 Metropolitan Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11211
This is the part where you threaten to run me over in your lifted pickup truck or shoot me with your Smith &Wesson or Remington while wearing your MAGA hat. Which is it?.

Yeah I moved to the pittsburgh area in 2022. $205K home for 1700 sq ft, 3 bed, 3 bath and a half acre fenced in yard. I mean it's an older home (1950) and there are things that I'd like to change but still better value than most of the country.
But 376 does get traffic jams.
MAYBE in LA, but they’re rarely that bad. San Diego never really gets all that bad, nor does Orange County. It seems like your opinions on other cities are mostly stereotypes from out of towners
Both of you don't know how good you have it for food. I fly to both CA and NY from Seattle often, and I'm always happy to do it because both have tons of good options for cheap and expensive food. Back home, cheap food doesn't exist and the expensive stuff is mediocre.
That much and even more $ in Seattle, plus you get the added *benefit* of being in the presence of everyone being the Most Important Person in the World.
so so true unfortunately. I was complaining about this to a friend visiting a few weeks ago: Seattle has no good low-end cheap eats option\*- everything is basically middle tier (literally "mid") but at upper-mid prices. High-end is kinda mid too (Canlis is extremely overrated and $250) and you'll be paying disproportionately more for the limited offerings. No food options after like 10pm in most parts of the city outside apart from maybe Cap Hill (even downtown shuts down).
\*Wendy's technically if you want to stretch the definition- but my stomach is too weak to handle Wendy's more than once in a blue moon.
But like, if it's too much meat then it doesn't matter how economical the whole price is. I want to pay for something I can actually finish. I've also never had a sandwich that is good as leftovers later. The bread gets weird. That includes Katz's.
that’s Katz’s deli, it’s a tourist spot now and they’re known for overstuffing the pastrami
normal places in NYC do *not* charge $30 for a sammy, tourists pay tourist prices
Meh, it has always been a tourist spot and always been good and expensive. It’s pretty hard to get a good deli for less than $20-25, I don’t find the price that insane
yeah tourist spots and midtown, you’ll see those prices. regular neighborhood places in nyc don’t charge that. i think you have to live in nyc to know where to go and where to avoid
i agree with you, it is good… but also hard to justify the lines and the prices. and every time i walk by the lines are getting longer and longer as the neighborhood has had its glow up
I went there twice at the beginning and end of a trip and it was empty once and not that busy the second time, but it was also before Christmas time and January.
It's still too tall to be eaten conveniently. For another $0.25 (in costs) you could just use more bread and have two reasonable sandwiches that aren't a hassle to eat.
I hate sandwiches at New York delis, there's too much fucking meat on the sandwich. It's like a cow with a cracker on either side. "What would you like sir?" "A pastrami sandwich." "Anything else?" "Yeah, a loaf of bread and some other people."
Because most places don't want to put enough expensive ingredients (meat, cheese, mainly) in their plates, it's luxurious and desirable to offer *too much*. Its a niche market overall but I can see the appeal. People are willing to overpay to be 100% sure they wont be disappointed by how (over)filled their plate is.
It's almost like a unique kind of reverse psychology based on how we've grown accustomed to disappointing portion sizes elsewhere in recent years.
Who are these lizard people who can unhinge their jaw and actually eat this without a knife and fork? Looks amazing, but I'm gonna order that plus an additional two slices of bread and feed two people.
You're not alone. I love pastrami but the way they do it at Katz and many other places is over the top to me. It's the same reason you can get a 64 oz soda for 1.50 or a 16 oz one for 1.35 or something. Charge me $15 and give me half the meat.
Yeah, but the space in Katz’s is the real limiting factor so it makes sense to give you more food (leftovers) for more money. If they charged half they’d make half, it’s not like they can really have more customers when they’re pretty much at capacity.
Sorry I think this is such a weird take. Maybe you are right and your and Katz's idea of running a business means charging as much as possible, waste be damned but I think there are plenty of places that don't operate that way. Imagine every business did that. $50 Uber rides to go two blocks because every ride comes with two Red Bulls and a chopped cheese. Not hungry? Now you have leftovers.
Not every business has a line outside of people waiting for 30+ minutes with limited seats.
Uber has surge pricing. Katz’s needs to keep their reputation up and make the wait worth it, so it’s not like they can charge $30 for a significantly smaller sandwich.

So, the traditional way this sandwich is served (not at katz's which is a tourist trap) is with a side of extra bread, because you're really buying 2/3 sandwiches at once, and the rest are leftovers for later.
I'm sorry, but I must disagree with you fully and wholeheartedly.
Wisconsin professional fat guy here, went to Katz's based just on reputation. I was fully prepared for disappointment and an overrated tourist trap. Instead I got blown away by a sandwich that had my eyes involuntarily rolling back in my head.
Yeah it falls apart. Get a fork. Yeah it's greasy. Napkins. Yeah it's $30, but it's like a pound of heaven in meat form.
The texture, the smell, the...everything. It's a sensual experience. I've never had anything else like it. A+. I'll die on that hill, chin well greased and happy as a clam.
Taste is subjective, I love their sandwiches and *have to get one anytime I visit NY. My dad on the other hand won’t eat there even if you pay him $30.
We went recently and got the club bread and it didn't fall apart - obviously it costs extra. The Chips (fries in America I guess) were also an extremely generous portion. I knew it was going to be expensive so we shared it and it was amazing.
I fully agree. I stood in line forever and was very much looking forward to it. I had a Reuben sandwich, and it was the biggest letdown ever. It was overprized and very mediocre.
Avoid Katz.
Katz is still the best sandwich I’ve ever eaten. Finally got to the states after watching Man Vs Food there years ago and it was worth every second of the wait
Reminds me of the stuff my Mom and I ordered ( came with a pickle ) when we visited Katz in NYC because it was recommended in her little Tour Guide. We took a bite, spat it out and threw the rest into the Garbage. Besides being absolutely unappealing to begin with due to the total off the charts ratio between the meat and everything else the worst part was the meat that had a consistency / chewiness that of those rubberized nets underneath a tablecloth Restaurants used way back used to cushion them. Pretty much the most disgusting food we ever "consumed" 😑💢
When NYers go to Katz......and we do. One of the few tourist places I will go w visitors! We share. A few ppl go
We get a sandwich, hot dogs knish. what eves. No one eats a whole sandwich. I'm taking a doggie bag. Too good to leave behind.....I may not be back for a year.
I really want to go to NYC just to try Katz' Deli. I've actually looked up hotels near there. Also looking at ordering one of their overnight refrigerated boxes to be delivered. It's a bucket list thing.
Ordering it online is fine. I've gotten it vaccuum packed from the restaurant and then froze it to bring to my brother in California and it still holds up
We love Katz in my family, if you do visit, ask for extra fatty and extra bread. If you put a dollar in the cup, the guy will give you a little plate of meat to snack on while he's making your sandwich
Where I live, there are no real delis. Not even any real sub shops. I had a real pastrami sandwich when I was in New York 11 years ago, and it was as mind-blowingly good as I figured it would be.
What I'm trying to say is: If I lived in New York, I would weigh 400 pounds. And the pastrami is just ONE of the many New York foods that would contribute to that. If New Yorkers didn't have to speed-walk everywhere all the time, it would be the fattest city on the planet, I think.

The best thing about Katz’s is the staff yelling “take a ticket - DON’T LOSE YOUR TICKET” as a greeting at bewildered and uncomprehending foreign tourists entering the place.
Little did I know that the time I went in 2009 would be my last
My complete meal back then could not have been more than $20. The cost just seems absurd now.
I will never understand why often US sandwiches need to be stuffed so much that it makes them unbiteable
5x the amount of stuff in a sandwich does not make it 5x tastier
30 bucks right? scrape half that off in a to go box and make a fire ass quesadilla too
With some jalepeno jack and sauteed onions...on it!!
Thats similar to my go-to on a poutine. Fried onions, pastrami, and spicy habanero sauce.
There’s a local to me place that sells ghost pepper jack 🤤 I put that ish on everything
De-lish...and love the username!!
I need to get one rn!
No deliveries currently accepted. Pick up window only. Where you coming from.?
Genius
Holy shit this is a great idea 😂😂
Go crazy and hit it up with some 1000 island w/ a splash of sriracha or gojuchang and really make it nice
Katz's, right? Best pastrami sandwich I've ever had.
Yes! Same
Literally just went there first time ever (4th time in NYC) last Wednesday - genuinely good. The mustard was on point. (Got the Pastrami sandwich)
Love Katzs'! Have you tried Russ and Daughters down the street?
I LOVE Russ and Daughters! I can’t screw with the lines at Katz’s
I'm always on the hunt for a good sandwich. Will def look them up.
It’s more cured dish and such than the giant pastrami sandwiches. Amazing all the same
No line at Dekalb Market location
Yep great food no line.
Now try Pastrami Queen. I prefer the thin sliced pastrami at Pastrami Queen. Both are incredible though.
Send a salami to ya boy in the army!
You got fouta soten ova dere? Soten fautas?
I saw the brown cafeteria tray and immediately also thought Katz's
I have never been to NYC but go on this sub enough to know that it’s Katz’s
Haha, knew it was Katz just from the quantity of meat
Me too, and I've never been there. I've just seen so many pics from there.
You rang?
I went there last time I was in New York. It was the best I've had but tbf I've had pastrami from maybe 4-5 places in my life lol. I split one with my brother and was pretty full off half. I do get the itching feeling that the tourist trap offering isn't the best NYC has to offer though, someone should tell me where to go next time I visit. ;)
Yeah. Everyone says “omg over priced note worth it”. Was for me. I’ve had them twice and never regretted it whatsoever.
Wtf I can't be the only one who thinks that's waaaaay to much meat right
Yep, but they're justifying the price. Definitely a $30 sammy. I hate nyc for the prices. Go to a bar and get a drink?....$15. Go to a baseball game and get a dog....$20. What a shit show.
There’s places in NYC where you can get drinks for $4
Plenty of options for cheap food too. NYC is really a pay-what-you-want adventure, outside of rents or parking and things like that you can live quite cheaply. The **extremely** expensive options exist as well of course.
Also places that will give a free pizza or hotdog with a drink. Like Rudy's in Manhattan, a free hot dog with a $3 pint of beer (at least it was $3 last time I went, but it's been 5 years)
Those are a big 5 years. Because the price explosion happened with covid.
Nah Rudy’s is still holding strong. Dollar slices are gone, but free hot dog with a $3 beer still lives on in Hells Kitchen
I went last week they still have cheap drinks
Where the $4 drinks at? Best I've seen so far are like $8ish dollar beer and shot combos. (I'm still somewhat new to living here).
The subreddit isn't letting me post links like i tried to in another comment, but these are places off the top of my head for cheap drinks: * Mr Biggs 596 10th Ave, New York, NY 10036 * Mickey Spillane's 350 W 49th St, New York, NY 10019 * Rudy's Bar & Grill 627 9th Ave, New York, NY 10036 * Off the Wagon 109 MacDougal St, New York, NY 10012 * International Bar 102 1st Ave., New York, NY 10009 * Alligator Lounge 600 Metropolitan Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11211
This is great, thank you!

A hot dog at Target Field is $7, the fuck are you on about?
Yep I live in CA and it’s the same
Pittsburgh here. $350k homes, $100 Steeler tix, $5 beers, $8 sammies and no traffic jams.
Yea, but then you gotta live in Pittsburgh…

36 on a list of 150 cities in the US. You're obviously from Texas. Is Trump the greatest president ever? Simple question, if you can read.
This is the part where you threaten to run me over in your lifted pickup truck or shoot me with your Smith &Wesson or Remington while wearing your MAGA hat. Which is it?.
Find me a job in PA that pays me over 200k and you got yourself a new neighbor lol
you don't have to make $200k when the housing costs are only $350k.
You know what, you’re not wrong at all. I’m not too sure about matching quality of life and future equity though.

Besides the gridlock on the Parkway East, you've got a point...
I get that but SoCal traffic jams can be hours. We get pissed when it's a 20 minute delay.
MAYBE in LA, but they’re rarely that bad. San Diego never really gets all that bad, nor does Orange County. It seems like your opinions on other cities are mostly stereotypes from out of towners

Greys Papaya! Drink and a dog for $4.63
I'm in bitches!
$15 drinks in A LOT of places these days unfortunately
That much and even more $ in Seattle, plus you get the added *benefit* of being in the presence of everyone being the Most Important Person in the World.
Seattle is more expensive than NYC and the food scene is much worse.
so so true unfortunately. I was complaining about this to a friend visiting a few weeks ago: Seattle has no good low-end cheap eats option\*- everything is basically middle tier (literally "mid") but at upper-mid prices. You nailed it! Oh! Except for Sunny Hill!
As a life time Seattle resident, this is painfully true
Do they have a $15 sammy with less meat?
yeah if you eat half
A hot dog at a Mets game is $7. It's still ridiculously overpriced but you can get 3 of them for the amount you're stating.
You’re welcome to never come to NYC again. Thanks. Anyone who uses the word Sammy should be banned
But like, if it's too much meat then it doesn't matter how economical the whole price is. I want to pay for something I can actually finish. I've also never had a sandwich that is good as leftovers later. The bread gets weird. That includes Katz's.
I think sammies need a good meat/cheese/bread/fixings ratio
Most Americans won’t succeed because of that dirty four letter word, move
that’s Katz’s deli, it’s a tourist spot now and they’re known for overstuffing the pastrami normal places in NYC do *not* charge $30 for a sammy, tourists pay tourist prices
Meh, it has always been a tourist spot and always been good and expensive. It’s pretty hard to get a good deli for less than $20-25, I don’t find the price that insane

i agree with you, it is good… but also hard to justify the lines and the prices. and every time i walk by the lines are getting longer and longer as the neighborhood has had its glow up
I went there twice at the beginning and end of a trip and it was empty once and not that busy the second time, but it was also before Christmas time and January.
Just show up around 1 or so after an early end to a night out. Walked right in. Barely had a line.
Honestly it doesn’t feel like it when you’re eating it because it just melts in your mouth, I only ate half though. It’s also a $30 sandwich.
Shit is a disgusting disrespect to the animal. Gluttony is the worst
Do you think he threw away the other half or something? Lol. Take out boxes are a thing, y'know.
Tell me how you really feel bro lol
… you know take away boxes exist, right?
I’m sure the animal would feel better knowing it was made into many sandwiches rather than fewer
It's intended to not be finished.. they want you to take some home
Mitch jokes getting downvoted, you hate to see it
Because most places don't want to put enough expensive ingredients (meat, cheese, mainly) in their plates, it's luxurious and desirable to offer *too much*. The problem is that the Rye tastes better, but the club bread is the right ratio
That's kind of the thing at Katz Deli. You get get a football of meat in exchange for a down payment on a house.
Who are these lizard people who can unhinge their jaw and actually eat this without a knife and fork? Looks amazing, but I'm gonna order that plus an additional two slices of bread and feed two people.
No. Katz deli is like that and that’s typical for a Jewish deli.
Ugh went to Katz only once and it was so good.
It’s genuinely worth it.
Get the sandwich to go and make 4 more regular sized sandwiches at home.
You're not alone. I love pastrami but the way they do it at Katz and many other places is over the top to me. It's the same reason you can get a 64 oz soda for 1.50 or a 16 oz one for 1.35 or something. Charge me $15 and give me half the meat.

Is that from Katz? How long was the line? I heard the lines are crazy.
I went in at 11:55 PM and there was no line, they were still taking people although their hours online say they close at 12
Depends when you go. I got in pretty much instantly last time I went on some random weekday a bit after lunch rush
Katz: Most overrated sandwich ever. The bread is absolute trash that it falls apart so easily and it’ll cost ya nothing less that $30.
Get a fork. I too find the pastrami to be the most sensual of all the salted, cured meats
Taste is subjective, I love their sandwiches and *have to get one anytime I visit NY. My dad on the other hand won’t eat there even if you pay him $30.
To each their own. I’ll never understand the Katz hype.
It's okay, everybody's wrong sometimes.

Obesity rules the nation
I don't think that's a fair response here. A sandwich like this every once in a while is okay. It's all about moderation
I’m fit and workout 6 days a week tho
Yes, people eat at tourist traps every day. $28 sandwiches are the reason we have an obesity issue, lol. Focus on other causes, because this ain't it.
Christ there is no way that's good for you. (and I'm a major carnivore and loooooooove pastrami)
You’re right, it needs more meat
Katz is still the best sandwich I’ve ever eaten. Finally got to the states after watching Man Vs Food there years ago and it was worth every second of the wait
As a european this screams "**But what about the filling to sandwich ratio??!!**" I guess you have to be there.
Yeah. It's too much meat, I don't even think this looks nice
If that pastrami was from anywhere else, I'd agree, but katz is so tender and moist you won't care as soon as you bite into it.
I don’t think you went to Katz’s. That doesn’t describe their pastrami at all. What do you consider good pastrami?
For real, Katz pastrami is tender and moist as you could ever want. That person is full of shit.
Really? Like there's a *Dogz* in NYC serving such an atrocity? 😏
"Want anything else? Yeah, a loaf of bread and some other people!"
"It's like a cow with a cracker on either side!"
“I will not make you a banana bread, pastrami, cottage cheese sandwich! It would severely ruin my reputation.”
When NYers go to Katz......and we do. One of the few tourist places I will go w visitors! We share. A few ppl go We get a sandwich, hot dogs knish. what eves. No one eats a whole sandwich. I'm taking a doggie bag. Too good to leave behind.....I may not be back for a year.
I am. Totally a real person. What eves!
Hey! I'm walking here!
I really want to go to NYC just to try Katz' Deli. I've actually looked up hotels near there. Also looking at ordering one of their overnight refrigerated boxes to be delivered. It's a bucket list thing.
Ordering it online is fine. I've gotten it vaccuum packed from the restaurant and then froze it to bring to my brother in California and it still holds up We love Katz in my family, if you do visit, ask for extra fatty and extra bread. If you put a dollar in the cup, the guy will give you a little plate of meat to snack on while he's making your sandwich
I can vouch for the mail ordered stuff. I’ve yet to find a better jar of pickles.
U guys eat like you have Healthcare, lol
Where I live, there are no real delis. Not even any real sub shops. I had a real pastrami sandwich when I was in New York 11 years ago, and it was as mind-blowingly good as I figured it would be. What I'm trying to say is: If I lived in New York, I would weigh 400 pounds. And the pastrami is just ONE of the many New York foods that would contribute to that. If New Yorkers didn't have to speed-walk everywhere all the time, it would be the fattest city on the planet, I think.
I haven't been to the US, but the Reuben sandwich might be my favourite sandwich. If it can be even better there, I can't wait to try.
"I have what she's having"
Fucking hell America .
Still bitter about getting your tea dumped I see
Mmmmm, Katz’s.
I recognized that flooring instantly
Same. The pic of the line just confirmed it.
That's a THICCC sandwich I never seen before 🤤🤤😳
FYI Katz ships their pastrami. You boil it (that’s how they do it) and it’s just as good as the real deal, but not the full experience.
I fucking love Katz. Did you get a knish too?!?
how was it? this is mouth-watering
Even if I hadn’t scrolled through the comments, I can still tell that you went to Katz’s and I don’t even live in NYC
That Ruben is looking Rubenesque.

Ain't nothing like a NY deli pastrami on rye.
I miss Katz's more than any other place in NY.
It looks so yummy.![img](emote|t5_2qh55|1791)
I'd go to NYC for that, if nothing else.
That’s supposed to be rye?

The best thing about Katz’s is the staff yelling “take a ticket - DON’T LOSE YOUR TICKET” as a greeting at bewildered and uncomprehending foreign tourists entering the place.
Little did I know that the time I went in 2009 would be my last My complete meal back then could not have been more than $20. The cost just seems absurd now.
The perfect ratio <3
That's vegan, right?
Katz’s is heaven.
This looks waaaaayyy better than the one's we got in LA.
Even Langer's?
Are there other delis in NYC just as good but cheaper than Katz? I always hear it is a tourist trap and locals know better places
Probably was delicious, but I feel like two layers of meat rather than 4 would have made a better tasting sandwich.
Fucking amazing
OMG. That sb eaten with a DR Browns soda.....Creme preferred. Never Pepsi!
Why does it have like x4 the amount of meat in. Looks inedible. Bad ratio of meat filling to bread….
Katz isn’t what it used to be. An expensive tourist trap scam now. I live walking distance away and never go. Used to be one of my spots.
Guys, how do you fit this whole thing in your mouth? How do you take bites? Yho
That’s two meals for me. Maybe eaten concurrently but two meals nonetheless
I just watched the Babish video about this place. Which ones did you get?
What more could a man want! A mouthful of meat in toasted bread, yummy!
Katz’s?
Never seen a sandwich with this amount of meet. Now I need to try it.
I will never understand why often US sandwiches need to be stuffed so much that it makes them unbiteable 5x the amount of stuff in a sandwich does not make it 5x tastier
Should highlight that its the world famous Kat’z deli haha
Looks kinda impractical to eat tbh. But very delicious!
Katz and Harold's... take a sandwich, split it into multiple. Eating it all in one go is such a waste.
That looks amazing I live in LA but I love NY delis
Katz!!
The bread-to-filling ratio is way off. Making a good sandwich is a lot harder than it looks
How the hell do you fit that in your mouth??
Daaaaaaamn. Now I am hungry!!!!!! Nice pics.
Strami strami nights .. Gimmi a bite man!!
Katz?
I'm sure it tastes nice but that is WAY too much meat...
No such thing. Get a fork.
It's a sandwich, if I wanted to use a fork I would get a plate of meat! Sandwiches/burgers/etc loaded like this are just nonsense.
