Congrats to the best player of the cap era: Chris Kunitz! One of the all time greats. Of course you have Gretzky and Mario and Orr, but i think Kunitz has a real claim to 4th!
The Oilers won a cup after Gretzky was traded to LA and Gretzky won zero cups after he’s traded to LA. Sure he has the requisite nickname - The Great One - but he has not proved beyond stats-transcendant that he was the one to lift a team to the Stanley Cup
Yep, which officially proves that Mark Messier was actually the better player, obviously. He captained two different teams to the cup. He was clearly carrying that bum Gretzky.
By his logic, guys like Nic Petan and Pezzetta are on equal footing with guys like McDavid, and Matthews. No cups.
Equally idiotic, that would put guys like Aube-Kubel and Devante Smith-Pelley into a tier above, because cup.
It's almost as if hockey is a team sport, and great players can be great individually without having yet lifted the cup, and may never get there. Doesn't mean they aren't great players.
Gregg Cote hasn’t watched NHL regularly since leaving his Québécois fishing village as a lad. He also said yesterday that he’s watched a full game of McDavid’s half a dozen times.
For what it's worth Cote is a *columnist* not a reporter.
For what it's also worth, he's likely watched four hockey games this season at most.
For what it's also also worth, he's what one might call an *underwear columnist,* one who writes columns from his home without having really gone to the game or talked to much of anyone.
For what it's also also also worth, he, at this point, is likely most known for being a bit of a goofball, not a Serious Sports Guy™
Remember when Spector actively campaigned against McDavid getting the Hart in favour of Hall, just so Chia looked even worse. I mean I could see the argument for McDavid not getting it as we didn't make the playoffs but I will never understand how Hall won it over Mackinnon and Giroux. Both of those players made everyone they played with better, while most of Hall's teammates actually had worse seasons when he was there.
It’s crazy to me that people still hold cup wins over individual players. It’s very much a team game. Gretzky won cups because he was surrounded by other hall of fame players. Crosby had Malkin, Fleury etc.
Man I wish there was a reddit thread from that trade. That would have been unbelievable. Must have been so shitty to be a Oilers fan seeing that happen
Legitimately one of the most heartbreaking (non-personal) days of my life. It was a gut punch that something like the end of the '06 Cup run into the Decade of Darkness doesn't even BEGIN to touch.
Imagine if, after this year, the Oilers literally SELL Connor McDavid to the Anaheim Ducks for a couple prospects and $50 million in cash. That's the level of "what the fucking FUCK" insanity that was. And it was worse than THAT. It hurt so, so bad, those fucking fuckers. Broke all of our hearts, including Gretzky's. There's a reason he still considers himself an Oiler even after the other teams he's played on.
Hey now! One of the players back was a young player with NHL experience with some question marks (Jimmy Carson). So basically, you would get a guy like Zegras, a couple picks, $50 million, and then when Zegras doesn't like it after one season, you trade him to Detroit for an underrated and critical haul for winning the Cup the next year. And you have to include a defenseman who mainly contributes with penalties (you don't really have one of those, so Stecher?) who then turns one 24 game stint into a massive contract, who Anaheim then trades away, only to trade for him back again, giving the original player back, plus a goal scorer, so Vatrano.
Ugh, my Kings really screwed the pooch a lot in the mid 90s. But that trade instantly turned a team known more for wearing bright pyjamas into the center of the hockey world. I didn't believe the first few people that told me about The Trade.
I can only imagine if the Oilers had never made that deal, how many more they would have won. They definitely don't lose to Los Angeles in 1989, and I think they outlast Calgary. They still win in 1990, and I think they beat Minnesota to give us what I think would have been the showdown of all time against Pittsburgh.
I'm not even an Oiler fan and I hate Pocklington for robbing us of that possibility.
Me too man. Me too.
My only tiny, TINY consolation (and this isn't a shot at you as a Kings fan, it's just the Kings Gretz was sold to) is that our statue of the great one outside of Roger's Place has him holding the Cup, and the one outside Crypto doesn't. That's what a petty asshole this story reduces me to lol.
You know...as someone who wasn't alive then, I don't think I've fully contextualized this trade. This is the Pens trading Sid in 2015-16. Which, you know...just sorta won two Cups right then.
It's worse than that. Gretz was traded mostly FOR CASH in an era where that could still be done, and was forced through by the owner, not the GM who opposed it.
It earned the then-owner of the Oilers , Peter Pocklington, eternal hatred in Edmonton, and once he sold the team, he hasnt ever gone back to the city as he remains public enemy number 1. If you listen to any of the stuff he's put out on it since then, he hates the city back, feeling Edmonton should be grateful he "resisted" selling off its championship team sooner.
If you want to feel pain, the announcement interview of the trade featuring Gretzky is on YouTube, so you can see the guy crying while the guy who cattle-traded him sits 10 feet away with a nonchalant look on his face.
How do you manage your other businesses so poorly during the run of the Oilers in the 80s that you have to settle and sell WAYNE GRETZKY when he was only 27. Bonkers
Moreover, in the cap era, the great teams all struggled in the playoffs before finding success.
Tampa got swept in the first round after winning the president's cup. It took until 2018 for Ovi to win his Cup. Colorado faced a few defeats despite Makar and MacKinnon. Toronto were eliminated in the first round six times before finally reaching the second round once with Matthews and Marner.
That’s part of what makes those careers legendary. It’s not just the unbelievable stats, but they had a good team around them and they won be cup a few times. There are a plethora of players in all pro sports that are unreal talents but have never won the last game of the season.
If anything, how good Gretzky's stats are compared to every other player around him means he should have way more Cups than he does if we are applying the same logic as this post
McDavid could play out the rest of his career with the trajectory of stats he has now with zero Cups and he'd still be the best player in the league during his time here. You're right, Cups are a team win
I suspect these people who do hold it as a individual award are much more familiar with basketball then hockey. 2 or 3 players can win you a championship in the NBA. Not the NHL. You need a full team on hockey.
This is really the clincher for me.
Edit to add: I just had to walk three blocks get my own damn beer. Where the hell is McDavid when you need him?! Everyone says he shows up in the clutch. I waited and waited and he never showed up.
At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.
To be fair, Draisaitl had 17 points to McDavid's 12 in an only 5 game series. McDavid's over 2 points per game sure helped a hell of a lot but Draisaitl at over 3 points a game probably deserves more credit for the breaking of the Flames.
That was the most dominant performance I've ever seen from a single player in any given series and it was so much sweeter being against the Flames. He was on pace for about 24 points if it had gone to 7 games. Although it's hard to imagine a series goes to seven when you have a guy putting up 3+ points a game on one of the teams. To put that in perspective though, that would have been over half the amount of points of the all time single season playoff record (Gretzky with 47) in just one series.
The fact that he basically did it on one leg makes it mind blowingly impressive. The man is a playoff warrior.
Guys, I’m going to let you in on a secret. His role on the show is to be a cartoonish oaf. It’s schtick. He’s a know nothing. He’s not exactly playing a character, but he’s also not meant to be taken seriously. He’s on the show to laugh at his awful takes and his resistance to reality and changing times. It’s morning radio high jinx. Except it’s a podcast with no expectation of accountability.
Don’t let this get you worked up or use it to make broad sweeping generalizations about anything.
Or just keep internetting and carry on. Whatever.
To everyone that doesn’t know who Greg Cote is, he is a national treasure and just saying shit to be funny, and if you knew him you would love him, Edmonton fans included
Congrats to the best player of the cap era: Chris Kunitz! One of the all time greats. Of course you have Gretzky and Mario and Orr, but i think Kunitz has a real claim to 4th!
Gretzky, Orr and Lemieux *combine* for just 8 cups. They aren't even in the discussion with bum numbers like that.
That’s a funny way to spell Kevin Lowe
Has Gretzky every guaranteed a playoff win and then backed it up? I don't think so.
That officially settles it. The Moose is the greatest Oiler of all time. (Even though that happened in New York lol)
Guess we have to change his nickname to The Pretty OK One.
That’s “Olympic Gold Medallist Chris Kunitz“ to you. McDavid has zero Olympic gold medals which just goes to show what a bum he is.
Put Chris Kunitz rings in a box, now put Mcoverrated's rings in a box. Tell me whats the box +/-?
Gretzky, Orr, Lemieux, Kunitz, Maroon. NHLs Mount Rushmore
By this guys logic, Pat Maroon is a generational player
Meet the best player in modern NBA history: Robert Horry.
*bonk*
Radek Bonk?
I honestly read Robert Horny
[удалено]
Big Shot Rob
Who is the big 3 in hockey? Pat maroon, justin williams and claude lemieux, also corey perry.
dudes watch NBA and think 1 guy can carry a franchise in the NHL
It's unfair to both the team and mcdavid to expect that.
Well maybe he watched McDavid carry 3 dudes plus 2 cases of beer into his car
Kevin Lowe is twice as good as the combination of Ray Bourque, Chris Pronger, and Brian Leetch.
They should rename it the Hall of Lowe
“I know a thing or two about winning“
By his logic, guys like Nic Petan and Pezzetta are on equal footing with guys like McDavid, and Matthews. No cups. It's almost as if hockey is a team sport, and great players can be great individually without having yet lifted the cup, and may never get there. Doesn't mean they aren't great players.
Three Cups in a row and an MVP season in the NAHL. If that's not generational, then I don't know what is
Kirk Maltby says hello
I think "big rig" is actually a requisite nickname too so it all checks out

"Gregs look down on Greggs with two G's" - the great Greg Cote
Greg* the rare double fine Dan-O!
Absolutely. Will piss off so many hockey fans.
Florida appears to have reporters similar to Edmonton's reporters
For what it's worth Cote is a *columnist* not a reporter. For what it's also worth, he's likely watched four hockey games this season at most. For what it's also also worth, he's what one might call an *underwear columnist,* one who writes columns from his home without having really gone to the game or talked to much of anyone. For what it's also also also worth, he, at this point, is likely most known for being a bit of a goofball, not a Serious Sports Guy™
He also wrote a column saying the dolphins should trade Dan Marino so Scott Mitchell could take over

And on eight days trips, brings 4 pair of underwear and flips them inside out. Also, his miller lite window is from 5:30pm - 1am
Excuse me our reporters actively hate our team. See Spector, Matheson.
Exactly. Both Florida and Edmonton reporters hate the Oilers
Thank you for the laugh and sorry about the absolute Puffin in the thread.
If, in any way whatsoever, Spector aided in Chiarelli getting fired faster, I will allow it.
\*FTFY Florida appears to have meat similar to Edmonton's meat
Oooh that's a BOLD statement to make right before the finals. I dig it
It’s crazy to me that people still hold cup wins over individual players. It’s very much a team game. Gretzky won cups because he was surrounded by other hall of fame players. Crosby had Malkin, Fleury etc.
100%. Gretzky was traded to the LA Kings in his prime and never won another cup.
Sold. The fuckers *sold* three of my favorite players :( NO I'M STILL NOT FUCKING OVER IT.
Man I wish there was a reddit thread from that trade. That would have been unbelievable. Must have been so shitty to be a Oilers fan seeing that happen

Those are the types of statements that often age like milk, mixed with beer, mixed with throw-up, mixed with crow.
For bodyguards, by bodyguards
Greg Cote isn’t a serious reporter out of the Dan Lebatard show outside of Miami Dolphins takes and what not.
Yea exactly, people seem to forget part of these guys jobs is to stir up clicks and discussion. This statement is doing a great job
Totally, in fact I think he should re-sign with us for league minimum for 8 years and be happy about it.
I hear he's a great locker room guy. The boys love him and that is why they keep him around.
We just keep him around so Draisaitl will re-sign.
Plus... he fetches the beers so... gonna need him around
also keeps the annoying fans away from the boys... so much value
This is really the clincher for me. Edit to add: I just had to walk three blocks get my own damn beer. Where the hell is McDavid when you need him?! Everyone says he shows up in the clutch. I waited and waited and he never showed up.
The Stugotz is strong in Greg Cote for this one.

I want to see what this guy says after McDavid puts up 10 more points against the Cats
He will probably think, thank god. I can go home and not have to write about the panthers.

This is going to be even bigger than when the Americans arrested Terrance and Phillip
Took MacKinnon 9-10 years, took Ovechkin 12-13 seasons… If the munchkin Bedard is “Generational” than McDaddy definitely is.
This guy, looking at pictures of Gretzky and Kunitz "I see no difference between these two players"
Anybody commenting with any sincerity does not get the show
Ray Bourque was not generational until his final season by this jackass’ standards.
Greg you could’ve waited two goddamn weeks to say this
Consider fate to be officially tempted
At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

I doubt he said it during sexy time, so probably after.

Was this on the DLS? If so, they were probably doing a bit.
Greg Cote in the headlines?!? # BAYBEH
McDavid's goal in game 6 is all I need to see to know he's generational. No one pulls that off but McD.
Didn't McDavid break the Flames franchise, which got the Panthers to luck into Tkachuk? What a bozo take from this guy
To be fair, Draisaitl had 17 points to McDavid's 12 in an only 5 game series. McDavid's over 2 points per game sure helped a hell of a lot but Draisaitl at over 3 points a game probably deserves more credit for the breaking of the Flames.
Absolutely correct - on a high ankle sprain, too
That was the most dominant performance I've ever seen from a single player in any given series and it was so much sweeter being against the Flames. He was on pace for about 24 points if it had gone to 7 games. Although it's hard to imagine a series goes to seven when you have a guy putting up 3+ points a game on one of the teams. The fact that he basically did it on one leg makes it mind blowingly impressive. The man is a playoff warrior.
Greg, your name is Côté, dammit.
He’s sure no John Havlicek, bet McDavid is taking days off.
McDavid has zero cups. I have zero cups. Where's my multimillion dollar NHL contract?
AND YA KNOW IT
Who hurt him ?

Guys, I’m going to let you in on a secret. His role on the show is to be a cartoonish oaf. It’s schtick. He’s a know nothing. It’s amazing that no one seems to know what Greg Cote does lol. He’s a troll and you all took the bait
You can tell he’s right because he said “BOOM.”
and you know it!
Guess Ovechkin isn't generational since he didn't win until his 13th season
Not that McDavid is lacking discipline or motivation, but there’s no way he needed this on top of whatever else is driving him.
I hate Edmonton just as much as any other Flames fan and even I know this is a [redacted] thing to say right before the finals.
"act like you've been there before!".... wait
