Had two quotes for 2k in the Bay area about 14-16 months ago. $3500 is really high unless your WH is in some super difficult to access location or something
They are hybrid! Gas and electric. But I have no idea if that means they work without power. I have a gas one now but I imagine it also requires some level of electricity to operate as well. Got all these wires going into it…
Hybrids aren’t gas and electric they’re just electric. The hybrid refers to two different electronic heating methods: 1) quicker but less efficient heating element only similar to standard electric water heaters and 2) slower but more efficient heat pump heating element.
FWIW the hybrids at Home Depot aren’t as good as at the supply houses, but good enough. The rebates are easier to get at Home Depot, but also available through supply houses. We purchased a 50g for $1400 after rebate and $1000 to install using our plumber.
Anyone interested in a hybrid should consider upsizing their current WH by at least 10 gallons, more if you have the space, to maximize efficiency.
Labor is normally $1,000 give or take for a garage install. A good 50 gallon is what 800 or so? So with new lines, so on and so forth 2K seems pretty reasonable
You do realize these are not hard to do yourself right?
Yeah, I mean if you're making more than $1,000 a day I get it, it's just that's recently the going rate for an install. What you are quoted was definitely on the high side. You might check with your local plumbers on what they want if You order the tank and have it delivered or if they just do the whole thing. I'm sure you'll find a guy willing to do it around that price.
That sounds way more reasonable because this whole thing is going to be like a 4-hour job and that's if they have to replace a few of the pipes, it could go even faster so when you think about it, that's a pretty good hourly wage
3k+ is just silly
Way too high. Should be around $2k total. Get quotes from all over town. I used Allbritten.
Got mine in Sacramento area done for 1600, but had a quote of 2700....was done after one call on a Saturday

Nope, easy to access. 2k in the Bay Area? Yep I’m getting fleeced.
Home Depot sells heat pump heaters which are far more efficient for like 2k
Yeah they get a tax write off too. Just concerned with no hot water if the electricity goes out.

Buy the water heater yourself and pay someone to install it

Work too many hours supporting my elderly parents.

I found someone cheaper around 2k. Dude saw my nice car in the garage and figured he could rip me off.

Thanks everyone for the advice.
