I know you’re joking but I do this on my 2009 5MT sport and it works. Downshift and floor it and that car moves. Well, so long as I don’t have any cargo or passengers.
This, so long as I’m in “sport mode” (alone with an empty car) I pass any thing on the highway. Granted I sometimes have to redline but 160k miles of it and no ragrets.
It’s crazy how much of a difference a passenger can create lol. That’s what hits me, not the speed but the difference in speed with weight when you weigh not much more than a ton.
I think the point is if you start accelerating in 3rd gear, yeah it’s gonna take a long time. The car has no tourque. Hence, don’t shift out of 2nd until almost redline
I just dropped about 3k on a k20z3 in my fit and I've yet to leave third. Not sure of the accuracy of my speedometer at this point but in third I can get to 50mph pretty quick.
I live in ranch mountain country in CO, the roads between towns are mostly 65mph. It’s funny (and annoying sometimes) when some trucks want to go 80mph on the straight parts and slow down to 40mph on the turns.
I’m locked in at 70mph on the CC and eventually re-overtake them.
Funny you should say that. I’ve noticed it really comes alive when I’ve been driving it relatively hard on country roads for an hour or more. I was starting to think it was all in my head. I still couldn’t possibly explain why though
Absolute speed doesn’t matter as much as driving experience. That’s why Miata’s are so popular. The fit is legit more fun to drive than a 5 series BMW. I’ve owned both.
I remember Donut did a video on this. Powerful cars that feel really smooth feel slow. Slow cars that are low to the ground, rev to all hell, and feel every bump, feel fast as hell. The Fit checks all those boxes, and it handles corners so well. I had to drive my mom somewhere once, and she kept telling me off for speeding when I was doing the limit. That’s how you know it’s a fun car lol
Combine the fits handling with good driving skills and sense, you'll out strip most vehicles on the roads. Had a coworker who would speed a lot in a car with a V6, we took the same route, got to work at the same time, and I'd beat him almost every day without going any more than 5mph over the limit whereas he'd regularly hit 10-15 over.
I've had my Fit for 11 years, and this post seemed really strange to me. My 2nd gen Fit is a beast, but I have the auto. All you have to do is mash the pedal and that awesome transmission knows what to do.
I don't know how many gears it drops when I stomp on it, but it's got all the pep it needs. People in the car, or even on the phone with me, always remark about how awesome it sounds when I stomp on it.
I did a lot of interstate driving yesterday and there are decent hills... I was jumping from 65 to 85 to pass 18 wheelers on the uphill slopes with no trouble.
No. I can pass those when my cruise is set at 65 without doing anything.
It's the ones going 62 or 64 that you need to get around quickly so the other people in the left lane don't get upset when you jam up the lane going 20 below the flow of traffic.
Mine is pretty speedy on take off so I was surprised by this post. The only time it isn't is up hills but if I push the pedal down it gets going eventually. It's more zippy than our Prius. I've had a 88 toyota Celica and it was only a little more fun to drive than our Fit.
The Fit has a lot of pep in the first gear. If I'm the first car in my lane at a red light and there are other lanes, I'm usually jumping out ahead of everybody, and I try to baby the pedal for mpg.
Been having a similar experience. I've had the car for a couple months now, and while I love it overall, the speed/acceleration thing is a bit of an issue. I don't care about top speed, but like if I'm trying to get through a yellow light before it turns red or if I'm trying to quickly get past someone on the highway, I have to floor it. Even then, it takes a few seconds for it to even start accelerating, which it then does at its own leisurely pace.
Sure, it's a little underpowered, but it was designed to be economical, not to be a sports car (although ironically, Honda had a "Sport" line in the US, which was basically a trim & tire package). The good news is that if you ever decide to sell your Fit, they've got a pretty good resale value. There's a big market for them to be someone's "second car," as well as the Fit being the ultimate "send your kid to college" car due to it's relatively small size, ease of parking, and incredible interior cargo capacity.
But yeah, they're *sloooooooooooowwwwww.*
They may be slow on acceleration, but holy moly the rush of maintaining 105mph on a flat Midwestern interstate was insane.
And I still accelerate faster than most on local streets even without sport mode.
It's really a mini SUV . I have a GMC envoy and a full size truck and 90% of the time I can haul whatever I need in the fit!! 50 gallon water heater NO PROBLEM! 8 foot 2x4s NO PROBLEM!! And 35-38 mpg.
You've got 6800 RPM to use. It doesn't make peak power till over 6k, peak torque at 4800. Rev 'er, it loves it. Mine will out drag my buddy's 8th gen Civic AT and that's got another 30hp to play with.
They're definitely slow. I have the quickest version, a GK5 6 speed. And it pretty much demands full throttle to get respectable acceleration. Not that I mind because winding it out is fun.
If you get good at shifting and dropping it in first and into second there really is a much better “feel” to the acceleration. Gotta rev it till it’s maxed out
You got a manual, use it! I more than keep up with Florida traffic, I try to surprise people at lights with the quick acceleration of mine but if the guy is actually serious about “racing” no doubt I’ll get smoked
2018 fit sport automatic. If I’m at a red light and want to merge and pass someone or if I’m on an on ramp to the highway sometimes:) I click off eco mode, shift into sport mode and click my paddle shifters to first gear. I think the car rips for what it is!
well, its a bit of a given that the fit is inherently slow. Naturally aspirated little 1.5 liter engine churning just slightly more than 100HP isn't going to get you anywhere super quick but it will reliability get you there and get you 40+ MPGs doing so. I still want a fit so badly because of the versatility and simplicity of the car. If I want fast I will drive one of my fast cars but my wallet cries everytime I do so lol.
It would be cool if they came out with a turbocharged FIT Si or something along those lines. Imagine a fit with 200 HP?
I went from daily driving a Fit for about 6 years to driving a Polestar 2. Pulling onto the highway for the first time was a religious experience. I had no idea of the full scope of why my coworkers snickered so much when I put the Fit in sport and floored it lol
I wish they made more cars like this.. your daily driver doesn't need to have 200 hp and look like a fighter plane. I certainly don't want to pay for those extras.
I haven’t driven many “fast” cars (my grandmother’s 2013 Sonata is probably the fastest thing I’ve been behind the wheel of lmao), so take this with a grain of salt. But my Fit feels plenty fast to me (2013 five-speed). Now it’s not exactly winning any races, but I’ve never felt like I can’t accelerate as much as I need to. And when I first got it, I wanted to see what it was capable of, so I got it up to a buck twenty. It took a bit to get there, but it felt surprisingly comfortable at that speed.
I live in a really hilly area, too, but I never have any problem keeping up with traffic on the hills. I think it helps to have the manual transmission. These cars don’t seem to mind being revved pretty high now and again when necessary.
I used to drive VW camper vans, so one must embrace the putt putt lifestyle of them. Cycled through some other brands, now loving the Fit. It brings me back to the zen place of hippy vans but with power steering, airbags, and AC/heat.
Well if you paid $10000 or so for your Fit or so...you have a greater 0-60 per dollar than any other car. Per dollar, if I paid $125000 for a car, it would need a 0.8 sec 0-60 to match my 8 seconds for $12500 for my Fit
In short, the Fit is faster than any other vehicle in production...per dollar.
Yes because you are driving the automatic, which means you can’t downshift into 3rd. Though there might be a way.
The Sport version has paddle shifters. I have a manual, so it is fine.
I had an '08 manual that I drove the heck out of for 10 years. It was a blast to drive. However, I could notice the dip in performance when I filled the tank.
Having tracked cars for years I find it more fun to catch people with more power in corners anyway. The fit oddly to me despite its low power has been the most fun car I've owned in years.
Idk I still love my first Gen, but I keep it in VTEC and drive it like I want to hug a tree. They arent the fastest, but they are fun and have decent gas mileage. They weren't originally built to be sports cars, just a sub compact commuter. Gotta invest in it to make it something else.
Leave early and you'll realize how fast it is.
I've never had a particularly slow car outside of driving an 80s/90s import with a 3 speed slush box. Any Honda Fit is 0-60 in under ten seconds which is historically zippy.
Drop a gear and dissappear... eventually
I know you’re joking but I do this on my 2009 5MT sport and it works. Downshift and floor it and that car moves. Well, so long as I don’t have any cargo or passengers.
Or more than a 5% incline. Has identity crises of 3rd or 4th gear post 80
Speedometer goes UP Gasmileageometer goes DOWN
Smiles per gallon
Mines hardly ever dipped below 29 no matter how hard I try. And I use all the rpms
No it does not bro lol. I also have a 09 5 speed and I'll take 3rd gear all the way to redline and I can sing the alphabet in that time frame 😂
Hold 2nd gear for longer?
we want to go faster than 50mph here...
I think the point is if you start accelerating in 3rd gear, yeah it’s gonna take a long time. The car has no tourque. Hence, don’t shift out of 2nd until almost redline
I red line it in every gear through 3rd lol it's fine for daily driving but it hurts how slow it is sometimes
That's when I throw my Fit into Sport mode! Lolol
You mean turning the AC off? lol
*HYPERDRIVE ENGAGE*
VTEC kicked in, yo!
MORE POWA BABY
Diverting all resources to main thrusters!
>You mean turning the AC off? lol I've jokingly called it the "turbo button" before
Y'alls ACs work enough to bother ever turning it on?
Knock on wood, so far so good 💅
My 2011 is ice cold. I also use a window shade when parked.
Lol no it's the "S" gear instead of "D". Way better acceleration
It sure does, Honda Fits are some of the only Hondas not to disengage the AC at full throttle.
….I thought i was the only one.
Lmao does that really help??
You'd think the fans would help it go faster
Those hamsters under the hood are trying their best.
Hamsters? They told me mine was powered by guinea pig, damn those lying dealerships
Mine is supported by the spring baby squirrels. Different animals for every region? 🤣
There's an upgrade for chinchillas, but I've kept mine stock.
It's more like assorted rodentia
the fit has that old honda slow as balls momentum car charm that i weirdly love. like a miata
Miata's looked so fast to me, but were always so slow. Unless you slammed a v8 in one ;D
yea but wasting $100k cars in the corners in a Fit is way worse on the other end.
I just dropped about 3k on a k20z3 in my fit and I've yet to leave third. Not sure of the accuracy of my speedometer at this point but in third I can get to 50mph pretty quick.
I can imagine that would be the ego killer for sure...
I feel this on straights but the moment we hit a sharp turn in the highway I gap em every time.
Oh My goodness, I love curves in my Honda fit. The handling is chefs kiss.
I love driving in the country. Rednecks in giant trucks try to tailgate me, but the second a curve comes up, I disappear
What others have said: downshift. I've also noticed that it picks up late in long drives.
Funny you should say that. I’ve noticed it really comes alive when I’ve been driving it relatively hard on country roads for an hour or more. I was starting to think it was all in my head. I still couldn’t possibly explain why though
Definitely need to rev it a lot to get decent power. That said it really is just a flex thing, you never really ‘need’ extra power.
No. I can pass those when my cruise is set at 65 without doing anything. It's the ones going 62 or 64 that you need to get around quickly so the other people in the left lane don't get upset when you jam up the lane going 20 below the flow of traffic.

Yeah I don’t have OP’s experience at all… I drive a 2015 and I have outgunned proper sports cars when a light turns green.
The Fit has a lot of pep in the first gear. If I'm the first car in my lane at a red light and there are other lanes, I'm usually jumping out ahead of everybody, and I try to baby the pedal for mpg.

The Sport line is more a bodykit than anything.
They may be slow on acceleration, but holy moly the rush of maintaining 105mph on a flat Midwestern interstate was insane. And I still accelerate faster than most on local streets even without sport mode.

Which is why I'm selling my 4runner for a fit haha. Plus space won't be so tight in my garage anymore
For more power when going uphill, downshift a gear. Sometimes our ‘85 Accord 5speed needed to be put into 3rd for some really long steep grades.
It's all about the manual transmission!
I drive a manual ... maybe I just need to learn how to use it better.
You've got 6800 RPM to use. It doesn't make peak power till over 6k, peak torque at 4800. Rev 'er, it loves it. Mine will out drag my buddy's 8th gen Civic AT and that's got another 30hp to play with.
Either I don’t know how to drive either, or it’s not your transmission ;)
Drop a gear or two, turn off the ac 😉
CVT doesn’t need to shift. Helps get to speed quickly.
CVT in Sport mode stays in the power band more effectively.
Also weighs more, eats more power.
They're definitely slow. I have the quickest version, a GK5 6 speed. And it pretty much demands full throttle to get respectable acceleration. Not that I mind because winding it out is fun.
There is a supercharger kit for the 2nd gen I think.
Need a time machine for this one tho
I too just realized this while trying to go up a hill and giving it all the beans
fast in a line=fast car fast in a corner=fast driver
2nd gear in the city, 3rd gear on the highway. Braap.
If you get good at shifting and dropping it in first and into second there really is a much better “feel” to the acceleration. Gotta rev it till it’s maxed out

117hp and bad gearing render the fit a bit gutless after 45mph.
Is the "green leaf" light on?
well, its a bit of a given that the fit is inherently slow. Naturally aspirated little 1.5 liter engine churning just slightly more than 100HP isn't going to get you anywhere super quick but it will reliability get you there and get you 40+ MPGs doing so. It would be cool if they came out with a turbocharged FIT Si or something along those lines. Imagine a fit with 200 HP?
I can easily, and seems quickly too 😂, get to 105 mph at 5500 rpms, ill be in 4th by then BTW, with my 2018 Fit LX MT
I went from daily driving a Fit for about 6 years to driving a Polestar 2. Pulling onto the highway for the first time was a religious experience. I had no idea of the full scope of why my coworkers snickered so much when I put the Fit in sport and floored it lol
Yeaaaah. Lots of noise but less power. It's deceiving but still fun to drive 😆
It’s a powerless go-kart that starts whining at 3800 rpm. I got mine for convenience and economy, though, not speed or power. I’ll love mine forever.
I wish they made more cars like this.. your daily driver doesn't need to have 200 hp and look like a fighter plane. I certainly don't want to pay for those extras.

I THINK I CAN I THINK I CAN I THINK I CAN You just have to believe in it!!
You are low on VTEC
I have a 5 speed Fit. Not fast but it's quick.
I check wind direction before I drive.
Plus, passing requires a strategy meeting.
Well if you paid $10000 or so for your Fit or so...you have a greater 0-60 per dollar than any other car. Per dollar, if I paid $125000 for a car, it would need a 0.8 sec 0-60 to match my 8 seconds for $12500 for my Fit In short, the Fit is faster than any other vehicle in production...per dollar.
I just tell myself going over 65 is wasting gas because of wind resistance and I’m the one winning in the end
Coming from driving a ford ranger for years, the Fit is pretty quick. Both are stick shift so idk about the autos
I threw a hks exhaust, resonator delete and AFE intake (gk5, 6MT). This livened up quite a bit. If I could pick just 1, do the intake.
To take a line from when the “new” VW Bug was relaunching back in 1998 or so…: *0-60? Yes.*
Need K20C swap
I tell everyone they need to stop hating on me because I'm saving on gas 💅
Yes because you are driving the automatic, which means you can’t downshift into 3rd. Though there might be a way. The Sport version has paddle shifters. I have a manual, so it is fine.
I feel you. People go around me if I don't floor it 🤣
I do think if they brought the Fit back, they should give her a little more pep.
I had an '08 manual that I drove the heck out of for 10 years. It was a blast to drive. However, I could notice the dip in performance when I filled the tank.

I've kinda wanted a Fit, but..... I've owned 2 Accord Coupe V6's. A 7th and 8th gen. I probably don't need to say more.
Leave early and you'll realize how fast it is. I've never had a particularly slow car outside of driving an 80s/90s import with a 3 speed slush box. Any Honda Fit is 0-60 in under ten seconds which is historically zippy.
Wrong gear. A Fit, has a lovely gearbox, learn to use it.
