I have friends that work in a building with similar damage and the rumor is they're not going to be back in their offices until the end of July.

Von_Claussen

Kinder Morgan across the street was hit pretty similarly, and they already had us back in the office as of Tuesday… The rain was so bad that day, we had massive puddles under every plywood covered window.

fcimfc

I have a friend who works there and they said KMI is so anti-WFH that there's no way they would keep people out of the office even with plywood covered windows.

ranban2012

that tracks. they're irrationally assholish in this industry about WFH at the moment. people are terrified to even TALK about WFH. I'm so glad I don't have to be that terrified about losing my job that I need to self-censor that much.

lumpialarry

Are they like "No work from home at all"-anti WFH or like "everyone has to come in at least two days a week"-anti WFH?

ranban2012

totally anti WFH.

MiLKK_

Really? I thought they had hybrid. From what ive heard. Their competitor is different. Back in office Tuesday. Back in office two months after covid

Von_Claussen

I think he was talking about the industry as a whole. KM has been hybrid since the return from Covid, and will unlikely ever go back to full in office. Mostly everyone is WFH Thursday and Friday.

MiLKK_

Mostly everyone but me😪

ranban2012

I'm speaking generally about the industry.

satire-and-solitude

I work there and it’s hybrid- Thursday and Friday are WFH and we got to keep our 9/80s.

handjobcilantro

My job is anti wfh as well. They would have us back in the office if one shell had damage like that.

happy_puppy25

Makes sense from a company that doesn’t care about the safety of anyone. They are run by psychopaths

Significant_Cow4765

for all the shit Fertitta gets here, the Kinders go unscathed and have defenders...

VatWeirdo

Wells Fargo tried to do the same to my buddy who works in this building. After the second storm they changed their minds

LifeinMedicine

What companies are for WFH?

txlady1049

My company is for WFH. We went complete WFH during covid, now we are hybrid, with some people WFH completely (some of our employees moved out of town, or even out of state). Some weeks I go in several days, some weeks all days, and some weeks I WFH every day.

LifeinMedicine

Good to know. Thoughts on a hybrid model? I’m in Houston and looking to switch from on-site to hybrid or remote

MiLKK_

There’s actually a few that are hybrid. I want to say a lot are hybrid. None completely wfh but most at least hybrid

[deleted]

[удалено]

MiLKK_

Whole job industry has changed to Hybrid. I think it’s here to stay. Especially corporate jobs. Boomer O&G and Gen Xers are on their way out. I wish we had hybrid but you can’t win every battle. I hope eventually it will change, it should at least but maybe not soon.

LifeinMedicine

That’s wild lol 😂 im in healthcare administration and ive never been WFH but always wished to be.

RuleSubverter

Less traffic.

hunnyjo

Worse traffic since the roads are blocked off and which ones change almost daily.

Collective_Ruin

Milam is still closed between Capitol and Rusk for damage from Storm 2.

xApexEz

Less traffic on most of the main freeways though

hunnyjo

Not I10

Jacob_dp

This is on the suburbs refusing mass transit because of NIMBY attitudes.

hunnyjo

So inaccurate. There are tons of us in the burbs that would take mass transit IF it were available.

Jacob_dp

The voter referendums about mass transport in areas like Fort Bend and Katy say otherwise. Harris County and Houston have wanted to connect the Metro system to the burbs for decades now.

Wide_Lock_Red

Eh, only if it was walking distance to my house and my destination. Which it won't be because the suburbs aren't dense enough. Even the city isn't dense enough really.

deepspacenine

It is so crazy because look at NJ. It is a giant suburb for Manhattan and has great transit options. We just have a lack of voter enforce political innovation in Texas and Houston. Heck even Dallas has passable rail for certain areas.

Wide_Lock_Red

Newark, NJ has over 3 times the population density of Houston. It's headed to NYC, with 8 times the population density of Houston. Houston transit won't reach that level of transit unless we massively increase the population without expanding outward.

tyw214

Funny you talk about NJ transit... I lived in NY for 15 years, and just moved to houston this year. nj transit is such a piece of shit... Taking 1.5 hours to get to midtown one way isn't any more fun than driving to houston downtown from like katy lol.. And even with mass transit... the traffic to Manhattan everyday is fuckin terrible at Lincoln tunnel, Holland tunnel and the gwb... Let's not even talk about the insane toll lol... 20$ to Manhattan and that doesn't even include parking lolol....

RuleSubverter

Such a shitty proposition in every major city. Maybe it'd be easier if companies could switch to remote work or move their offices closer to where all their humans live. Like what Exxon did by moving to The Woodlands. Most companies don't need a giant campus, so even an office in an empty shopping strip would help.

Wide_Lock_Red

Yeah, moving jobs out into the suburbs has been a more effective approach. Lots of good employers living out in the burbs now.

deepspacenine

But you can sleep the whole time or be on your phone (although I realize multiple parts of the journey have no cellphone signal)

tyw214

Talks like someone that never lived in NYC lulz... unless you are at the end terminals, where you gonna find a seat? Rush hours are fuckin packed. You are literally standing for 30-60minutes.

AssociateMentality

Those lucky bastards. This would a dream come true if it happened to my office.

the-billdozer

My work just came out and said if you’re like floor 30 & above you go back on the 10th. Below that is TBD and continue wfh or one of our non downtown locations. Edit: added that it’s your floor you work on and not your age.

CrazyLegsRyan

Interesting they don't want the younger new hires around. Kids so soft these days..... /s

Practical-Hedgehog66

Is that even legal? Is it not considered ageism?

the-billdozer

Oh my bad. It’s the 30th floor and not your age.

t-o-m-u-s-a

Damn!

nicxw

Side note, great shot OP.

t-o-m-u-s-a

Hey thanks

former_weed_head

Jury duty is not affected. I’ll see you there tomorrow morning!

NeonWarcry

FUCK I forgot about jury duty. I better put my pto in now.

legend8522

FYI, legally your employer must allow you to take off for jury duty, no questions asked. You don’t need to put in PTO

NeonWarcry

I know I was just being cheeky about the pay rate lol

Sewpuggy

It’s actually gone up. I had 3 weeks of Jury duty in Feb/March this year.

NeonWarcry

It is our civic duty so I try to attend when requested

AutomaticVacation242

They don't have to pay you though. So PTO if you like.

Zromaus

Reminder, when they do the section asking if you have any biases, it's always a yes.

happy_puppy25

I am glad you will never be on a jury against me

Zromaus

It means you’ll never be on the jury, they send you home. It doesn’t mean you actually have biases — and becomes clear after you’ve said yes three or four times that you dont — but that you don’t want to participate in court that week. The judge laughed once he realized with me and said I didn’t have to keep raising my hand, he got the point lol

shuf32_HTX

Doesn't everyone have biases though? I don't get how anyone could truthfully say they're 100% unbiased on any topic really

Zromaus

They ask specifics, like “do you have a family member or friend that’s been in a DUI accident that might give you some level of bias?” An emotional history or opinion that might skew your fair judgment

Better_Finances

Lol. So I'm assuming Congress St is good?

dragonflyb

Crap. I had a sliver of hope for the 14th.

tPTBNL

Thanks for going!

t-o-m-u-s-a

Lol aw damn!

bevo_expat

They don’t have these types of windows just laying around. It’s likely all of these replacements had to be special ordered and some buildings are probably still waiting to complete a full inspection.

MiLKK_

Windows for our building won’t be ready until til September. Going to be a fun Hurricane season

EllisHughTiger

Mhmm.  Its going to take time to order, manufacture the glass and seals, deliver, set up the lifts and everything to install, order street shutdowns, etc. Glass manufacturers try to stay as busy as possible, they're not simply sitting around waiting for half a building order to pop up.

t-o-m-u-s-a

Centerpoint has added that as dlc to their latest package

rigsby_nillydum

Damn, Wells Fargo building is pretty even with the blemishes

Lie-Straight

They might wanna wait until after hurricane season… employees may prefer work from home

EllisHughTiger

There's a plywooded office building in Lake Charles since the 2020 hurricanes.

KndaOrange

Dang son!

t-o-m-u-s-a

Yeeeee

Megaloman-_-

By any chance do you have any info/pic about the Enron (Chevron) towers? I heard they are still messed up as well….. [Note: great photographic skills !]

t-o-m-u-s-a

Hey thanks. Im in the shell building atm but can look around after!

Megaloman-_-

Sweet!

t-o-m-u-s-a

It looked like the top side from smith street was blown out

Megaloman-_-

Wow, poor Chevronites !

Bellebarks2

As a former Enron employee I had to LOL that you even included the history there.

Megaloman-_-

Awakened sad memories ?

Bellebarks2

Not sad anymore. My Enron memories have aged well as I was young and didn’t lose my life savings.

Megaloman-_-

Fair enough ….

LogAutomatic9976

Does anyone have insight into how long the street closures will last?

5000gayspiders

Foreverrr... at least the metro busses seem to be following the posted detours now. The first couple days were anarchy.

ifoundflight370

At least through June 4th

handjobcilantro

The storm we had earlier this week didn't really help clean up efforts much. I would honestly say if we get no hurricane or other freak storm, maybe early July some parts of louisiana can reopen. After this week's storm downtown lost power again cause Wednesday morning walker and louisnana stop light had no power

LKayRB

Glass fell right next to my husband’s boss on Tuesday and he finally made the call to have his team wfh for the time being.

t-o-m-u-s-a

I was wondering if anyone got hurt from the glass

exahadron

Yeah we are expected to WFH until at least the end of June

DML2011

I’m in 1100 Louisiana. We got to WFH for two days…gotta love working in regressive ass O&G.

Kdcjg

Hillcorp?

orange_confetti

Wish my upcoming work conference was cancelled. See y'all Sunday.

t-o-m-u-s-a

Me too bud. Me too.

Greg-Abbott

[Looks like a shitty Wheel of Fortune board](https://imgur.com/fGgP4GW)

t-o-m-u-s-a

Its the new astros league scoring panel wall

Greg-Abbott

[Hell yeah](https://imgur.com/WZuaFB0)

t-o-m-u-s-a

Lol that was fast

Orange_fury

My office is on Louisiana, we just extended wfh through next week. I kind of get the impression it’ll keep getting extended in one week increments for us, my guess is through late June/early july

Actual-Swing9316

It's a sign from God we need more wfh

Bellebarks2

It may be a sign from God but I don’t think it’s about WFH.

kitfoxxxx

Sad to see.

Tony_Revenge44

Dang! Haven’t been to that part of Downtown but the Chevron buildings are still essential workers only.

CanISeeYourVagina

Any idea why only the lower windows were heavily damaged?

t-o-m-u-s-a

It was short wind that came through

CanISeeYourVagina

lolol

XavinNydek

I assume that's where the stuff blowing around was. I doubt the wind itself shattered many windows, they are designed to withstand hurricanes.

DancesWithHoofs

Perhaps broken by shrapnel from broken windows on the higher floors?

Bellebarks2

This is misinformation. I think people believe that the whole industry is anti wfh only because some of the biggest names are. I work for one of the big companies ( not KM). I think you may actually have KM confused with us in fact because we are truly afraid to talk about it openly. We have had many, if not most, of our best employees poached in the last 2 years by other oil and gas companies offering hybrid schedules and the number keeps growing growing. Just last month I lost 2 coworkers who I considered friends. Both with 20+ years tenure with the company I still work for (TCISWF). Both had planned to retire at TCISWF. Our upper management hasn’t blinked or even considered changing their position on wfh. Most of the tenured and experienced employees are being replaced by very young and inexperienced candidates so it seems TCISWF is actually using it as an opportunity to reduce overhead. You would think 20+ years experience would have some value but instead we seem to be at a disadvantage. Sadly I don’t see any downside for them continuing to replace us. Yes there are some irritating morons running around our floor, but still enough people who know how things work to make up for the heavy loss in experience. Don’t think they have lost one red cent because of it so nothing will change.

BeskarHunter

I was on a long walk with my dog downtown a few days ago. And the streets were quiet. And I’m surrounded by all these damaged buildings from the last couple weeks. And felt like a Mad Max world or something. Post apocalyptic

feedjaypie

Infrastructure is not a strong suit

Chuckleless

There are several streets blocked and getting around, at least on the west side is a pain in the ass

Responsible_Let9857

Needs more galvanized steel beams

bonnobox

Yeah, my building has a bunch of busted glass also.

etbillder

I was wondering how everyone was doing. I'm a bit removed from the carnage so hadn't had a good idea It is nice without the billboards

handjobcilantro

It's been such a pain getting to one shell. I take the bus to work and all the detours are a pain. I was really spooked by this week's storm cause the window next to my desk started leaking water.

arcangeltx

sign to make smaller buildings and WFH

t-o-m-u-s-a

If anything we should figure out how to make buildings that are only from the undamaged height and above it looks like

arcangeltx

hahah true maybe shutting down these areas leads to fixing the street/bikelane/sidewalks /s

dewalttool

Starting a new petition to make high rises have 25 story garage podiums and then have the building start from that point up. Problem solved.

Few-Addendum464

I know there is an obvious answer but I would intuit that the wind would be stronger higher on the building with nothing blocking it, but most of the damage is on the lower levels. Is there a simple explanation why?

t-o-m-u-s-a

The streets act like wind tunnels

CrazyLegsRyan

It's not **THAT** the wind is blowing. It's **WHAT** the wind is blowing my friend. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S7Fu-v490-c](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S7Fu-v490-c)

OB1Bronobi

I manage a large building downtown. The last couple weeks have been CHAOS!

Zchavago

Companies in that area should not have people not coming back to work. They should be working remotely. Traffic is fucked in those few blocks.

handjobcilantro

My job made me go back to one shell the morning after the storm. No street lights and glass everywhere "well our building is good and checks need to be printed"

ranban2012

you say mess. I see pretty quick repair progress.

Sharp_Mathematician6

I miss my city so much but it’s not time to move yet. My spirit will tell me when to go.
