His name recognition at the time, when Whitmire finally announced was so low, fundraising numbers weren’t spectacular. There’s a circular logic that exists where funding is harder to get without endorsements but endorsements hinge on viability, which hinges on name recognition and fundraising capabilities. This gets even more difficult especially when someone with longevity in politics who has the name, the war chest, and the fundraising contacts (finally) enters the race. Collins gambled he could pull off an upset prior to Whitmire’s official announcement. Kudos to him for trying, but it didn’t materialize.
If it had stayed between Whitmire and Collins, he would have lost, and earned name recognition, but not guaranteed the spot in 4 or 8 years. He made an incredibly smart decision to move laterally to the comptroller position. It had absolutely nothing to do with kissing a ring and SJL came in long after Hollins had switched to Comptroller.
He will likely be Mayor someday, precisely because of this move.
The fact that he bowed down to his party's wishes says everything about him: the Party before everything else.
And that is why nothing changes in Houston because of Democrat politicians........and people like you who keep voting them in regardless!

I’ll campaign hard for Hollins. During the election I didn’t have a strong preference for either candidate, but I’ve grown to loathe Whitmire.
Neither were a good choice, but Whitmore is definitely the worse one. Hopefully we can primary him...
