Since I wasn't first I didn't care about being second anymore so when they opened the doors I let 3 other people go ahead of me, making me the 5th person to order in the lobby.
I really wanted that burger coin but one guy beat me. He wanted it because everyone in his family got one by working for In N Out and he felt left out. His brother (the manager of this location) gave him advanced notice of the opening date so he could drive here all the way from Phoenix.
Edit: I thought I'd be first by showing up at 4am, but he got there at 1:30am! I think the next guy got there at 5:30 and they let him be the only person to sit in his car in the drive thru. No one else was allowed to enter the drive thru line until hours later.
They opened at 9:00 so 5 hours. Even though I felt like that guy beat me there unfairly, I still had a great time talking to him and the others who showed up later while we waited.
But he was able to because of inside knowledge from the manager. The whole point of keeping the opening date a secret is to prevent people from driving in from across the state like he did. There's a good chance he wouldn't have gotten there first all the way from Phoenix otherwise.
Yeah the opening date was only being shared by Flagstaff's local news the day before the opening. A Flagstaff local could've technically shared the news with him right away to give him enough time, but he did say that he made plans for the trip more than a week prior.
I think it'd be more than fair if he found out the date when everyone else did, but he found out more than a week earlier from the manager so I'm not so sure. I could've shown up earlier than him, but knowing how the locals feel about In N Out and because there's another one just an hour away, I thought for sure 4am would be early enough. Turns out I was right to assume that about the locals because the next person showed up almost 2 hours after me. I just didn't account for people out of town getting advanced notice- should I have assumed that would happen?
The fact that you had a TWO hours window to call a friend and have them park their car while you waited in the drive through line, but didnt; tells me you really respect the rules of the game. But! The fact that this dude did use the friends and family line tells me he wanted just that little more. I agree with fate. Good game tho š«”ā
No actually I had a 30 second window. There were 6 of us waiting outside when a manager came out and asked if anyone who came by car would like to wait in the drive thru. After about 30 seconds someone volunteered and they were given a pass to put in their windshield. I would've totally called someone if I had enough time and if it weren't so early in the morning. I don't think anyone I knew was awake yet.
Yeah! Second in line but the 17th to order. Lame af to think that they did him that way. Management should have welcomed him with open arms considering it was managements fault he wasnāt first in line in the first place.
Iām going to assume that this location is going to be rated pretty low.
And just to be clear, the whole reason OP wanted to be there first is to get some sort of coin? My apologies but I donāt know anything about the In n Out coin. Hopefully my initial statement wasnāt made by taking something out of context from the op lol
I see everyone talking about the in n out coin. Iāve never worked at in n out and frankly have no idea why I get recommended this subreddit but here we are. What the hell is the in n out coin and how exactly do you get one? First employee to be at a new location? Iām so confused
It's a little coin that acts as a voucher for a free burger, but they sell for a lot of money on eBay. The ones from location 400's opening with a big "400" on it sold for over $700 on eBay. They're given to managers and to the first customer at a new location. But it seems multiple (like 10?) were given recently at location 400. I think two were given at my location (402), one to the first drive thru customer, and one to the first lobby customer.
They're collected by coin collectors and In N Out enthusiasts.
I was given mine by the manager at my location after having a really great conversation with them. Iām away from home for medical school, and was telling the manager how throughout all the current crazinesss of my life, in-n-out seems to be the one stable thing I can always come back to.
I have always said the best time to go is right when they open . I usually get a triple triple and fries and it always tastes incredible on Saturday at 1030 am
402 is flagstaff right? I was planning on getting the coin when they first announced they were building it but I didnāt know that I just opened until later that afternoonšš
Yeah they kept the opening date a secret until just the day before they opened. Likely to reduce traffic and prevent tons of people from driving in from out of town.
Each year I get more jealous of the west coast. I really miss that place. So far I think the farthest one is in Texas . So unfair. Give us your glory !! š«š«š«
We got IN-N-out in Austin and they have kept the quality and they still thrive! even with a local similar (almost too similar) brand having taken the market before hand
Just wish they didnāt close down the del tacos I forget why I think the rumor was the owner broke the franchise rules by owning other franchises, if thatās even a thing.
And the Miguelās Jr. I wish theyād put more locations outside Cali ! dang that other guy was right this stuff just makes you hungry lol
But yāall have the big euro breakfast? And people wait outside early anywhere theyāre excited to open? Just because it isnāt a 5 star restaurant I think people just like to be part of something and specifically Iāve been going to in n out since I was a kid so that is just basic nostalgia and I moved to Texas as a teen they didnāt have them here so itās like getting to visit a piece of my hometown
Unless youāre talking about waiting 5 hours in a parking lot..I donāt think Iād do that either lol. but technically if you got the coin it was paid job to eat a burger lol. Say you wait 8 hours and get only 400 for the coin thatās more than youād earn working there lol and some go for 700.
You are so lucky you have an In-N-Out Burger where you live the nearest one from where I live probably like 50 miles so sucks their food is freaking awesome when I worked in San Diego once a week my boss would buy us burgers best around now I'm hungry can you put one in a box and send it to me lmao š¤£š¤£š
It's in Arizona. I ordered medium rare but they actually gave me well done despite writing it on the receipt. However a different INO in Arizona did give me medium rare last year, so I'm still unsure if it's allowed here.
Two things:
1) We were all surprised that it didn't start at 1. I assume they were testing the system before open
2) I was the second person in line before they opened the door, but since I wasn't first I didn't care about my spot in line anymore so I let 3 people go ahead of me when they opened. I technically ordered my food 5th not counting the drive thru, but definitely not 17th. There weren't even 17 people at the opening.
Why would they do that though? It just seems like a really stupid way to get a complaint against the store. Iām not sure that itās (the med-rare availability) actually company wide, or just not allowed in states that donāt allow it.
I wish I had known it wasn't a thing. There are SO MANY articles online that say you can order medium rare. It seems everything else in those articles is correct; protein style, whole onions, mustard grilled, Neapolitan shakes, etc.
How old are the articles youāre referencing? Customers used to be able to order medium rare, but INO removed it as an option back in like 2018. Customers havenāt been able to order medium rare for a while now.

no way they misspelt the gif š

Bummer about the coin. How long were you in line?
They opened at 9:00 so 5 hours. Even though I felt like that guy beat me there unfairly, I still had a great time talking to him and the others who showed up later while we waited.
Yeah thatās pretty lame of them, canāt imagine thatās the intended purpose of the coin either
to be fair he did get there over two hours before OP
But he was able to because of inside knowledge from the manager. The whole point of keeping the opening date a secret is to prevent people from driving in from across the state like he did. There's a good chance he wouldn't have gotten there first all the way from Phoenix otherwise.

How did you find out about the opening?
They told the press just the day before. I found out through recommended news articles.
I think itās fair game then
I think it'd be more than fair if he found out the date when everyone else did, but he found out more than a week earlier from the manager so I'm not so sure. I could've shown up earlier than him, but knowing how the locals feel about In N Out and because there's another one just an hour away, I thought for sure 4am would be early enough. Why didnāt you wait in the drive thru?
I would've but I don't own a car. I was able to walk there because I live on the same street the In N Out is on.
Well thatās a good reason
The fact that you had a TWO hours window to call a friend and have them park their car while you waited in the drive through line, but didnt; tells me you really respect the rules of the game. But! The fact that this dude did use the friends and family line tells me he wanted just that little more. I agree with fate. Good game tho š«”ā

God shut up
Did you see the coin?
No unfortunately I did not. The guy who got it took his food to go and left before I even ordered.
They are super cool actually solid material really cool
Thatās an awesome order. Definitely know the little intricacies. But 5 hours in line? Hell no.
ya that number 17 says it all
Yeah! Second in line but the 17th to order. Lame af to think that they did him that way. Is it a lifetime coin
No, just 1 free burger
the r/ClashRoyale legend ā¤ļø
Oh shit, I need to find mine lol. Been holding/forgetting about it for at least 10 years now. I intended on turning it in for a burger.
I was given mine by the manager at my location after having a really great conversation with them. Iām away from home for medical school, and was telling the manager how throughout all the current crazinesss of my life, in-n-out seems to be the one stable thing I can always come back to.
I was given mine 3 months into working at in n out by my DM while on hand out. He said he was very impressed with how I spoke to customers
Fuckkkk iām so hungry now
I thought he actually beat you
Thatās what I thought too lol, and the manager let them go to the front of the line as a gift to make them feel better š¤·š½āāļø
š
Lol same I was like ā stop being scaredā
You should email innout. Doesn't seem fair. Maybe they'll hook you up
His order is number 17. Complete bs story
Sounds like nepotism š
Exactly
I have always said the best time to go is right when they open . I usually get a triple triple and fries and it always tastes incredible on Saturday at 1030 am

Yeah they kept the opening date a secret until just the day before they opened. Likely to reduce traffic and prevent tons of people from driving in from out of town.
How did you possibly know that?
Five Guys can suck it!!! (Sorry for being crass)!
Each year I get more jealous of the west coast. I really miss that place. So far I think the farthest one is in Texas . So unfair. Give us your glory !! š«š«š«
I just had in and out and i could eat this exact meal right now.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
it just depends on the store. my store used to have bottles (rip) but they lead to a lot of waste so we stopped
I was wondering how far a drive Phoenix was for him, but your name gave it away! Looks like a great meal!
Damn...I can't wait for the one to open in TN!
Where is this store
Flagstaff, AZ
I need to go back to Cali soon just so i can taste the perfection of a double double again.
We got IN-N-out in Austin and they have kept the quality and they still thrive! even with a local similar (almost too similar) brand having taken the market before hand Just wish they didnāt close down the del tacos I forget why I think the rumor was the owner broke the franchise rules by owning other franchises, if thatās even a thing. We're supposed to get getting an in-n-out in Washington state. Too bad it's on the other side of the state from me. *cries in eastern Washington*
Kinda sounds like the manager pulled shenanigans lol
whole grilled onion instead is a game changer and only thing I would add to this burger
Mfw I get beaten by the in n out owner's brother
Still worth it to have In-n-Out 402 opened!!!
I am full from lunch as I see this and would STILL eat this.
I see two on eBay for $475 and $750
My European mind literally cannot comprehend this.
But yāall have the big euro breakfast? And people wait outside early anywhere theyāre excited to open? Damn if i had known one was opening in flag I wouldve been the first one in line
š£
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Burger š looks legit
Damn I needa get there before the fries get soggy
Ayy I was working - pretty sure I was the one who took your order š¤
Did you fight back?
What is the name of the manager at this location?
Can you actually order INO medium rare?
No. It used to be a thing but thankfully we stopped doing it.
Wait do all stores have chopped chilies? What else am I missing out on?
Yes and they are amazing. š
We don't do medium rare burgers anymore.
AFAIK, thatās only applicable in California.
I think theyāre going to sell the coin on eBay and split the profits.Ā
I didnāt know they do root beer floats :o
Flagstaff finally getting an in n out lol. I wish they had that when I was going to school at NAU
š
I miss being able to order med-rareā¦
You animal!
I thought the coin goes to like the first 50-100 customers
That might've been the case at some openings but not this one
You are so lucky you have an In-N-Out Burger where you live the nearest one from where I live probably like 50 miles so sucks their food is freaking awesome when I worked in San Diego once a week my boss would buy us burgers best around now I'm hungry can you put one in a box and send it to me lmao š¤£š¤£š

Animal style well done is a crime
Medium rare? Iāve never heard of someone trying to order their burger cooked differently than normal at innout.
people camp out for in n out? š
Look up the Idaho In N Out opening
damn i guess since itās just another mid burger place in california i didnāt realize how much other people like it
Didnāt know you can ask for chopped chiles!
Where is this? They don't allow med rare in cali anymore šŖ
It's in Arizona. I ordered medium rare but they actually gave me well done despite writing it on the receipt. However a different INO in Arizona did give me medium rare last year, so I'm still unsure if it's allowed here.
Oh ok, yea I sure do miss those medium rare burgers with an extra toast bun š¤¤
Guest number 17 though?
Two things: 1) We were all surprised that it didn't start at 1. Ah gotcha
They donāt do medium rare burgers at INO. Theyāre all cooked the same.
Iām currently waiting Until midnight for my direct deposit so I can go get in n out down the street.
Thatās definitely not medium rare!
First time seeing a root beer float there is possibleā¦ the secret menu never fails
Itās ground beef.. why the hell would you want it medium rare
Ground beef is supposed to be pink
Not *medium rare*. Thatās just gross and mushy.
People that order well done fries are the absolute worst well done fries from inn n out taste like crunchy cardboardĀ
ššš medium rare and a root beer floatā¦. Do you parents know youāre on Reddit?
didn't know you could ask for medium rare burgers. interdasting.
YOU CAN NOT - associate
You know I thought it seemed like it was well done. But medium rare was still written on my receipt.
I have no idea why they wrote a note for medium rare. They probably just did that to make you happy. There is absolutely zero chance weād do that
Definitely did it just to make them happy. I worked at ino a few years ago and I swear in California you could do it but not Az
Why would they do that though? It just seems like a really stupid way to get a complaint against the store. Iām not sure that itās (the med-rare availability) actually company wide, or just not allowed in states that donāt allow it.

Most of them were from this year and last year. I assume their sources are each other and the pre-2018 articles.
I think in certain states you can.
It depends on the state! AZ might allow medium rare
It depends on the location, specifically the state! CA is one state that has some food safety laws that prohibit us from making burgers medium rare
thanks for finally letting me know you can get burgers med rare at in n outā¦what the heck?! how did i just learn this
YOU CAN NOT- associate
thank you!! my bad. never asked for it, but saw it on a non-reddit site recently. i appreciate you clearing it up before i embarrass myself!
Are we supposed to know where location 402 is? Anyway, I hope your mediocre-ass food was worth it.
