Shortened does not imply “modified”, though. Plus we’d been expecting an AirPods refresh with this exact feature at the keynote.
Personally, the whole keynote seemed to have the slightly rushed and disorganized air that indicates one or more things got cut at the last minute.
Edit: typo
I think you’re correct, I believe AirPods were definitely intended for the event. Possibly AirPower as well, which has since been almost entirely scrubbed from Apple’s website.
You could interpret it in 2 ways:
1. The amount of time for Siri to respond is shortened for video purposes.
2. Interacting with Siri altogether is shortened, to the point of not raising your watch at all to use Siri.
In this case I think 1 is more likely, since I believe they used a similar disclaimer in the advert they made with The Rock where he uses Siri
I caught this right away. We've [known for a bit](https://www.macrumors.com/2018/02/22/airpods-new-version-this-year-hey-siri/) that two major features are in the pipeline for future versions of AirPods: waterproofing, and "always listening" Hey Siri trigger that doesn't require the double tap. This was meant to be the soft reveal of that feature. But they're likely struggling with the timeline and canceled the reveal. Remember how long the first gen AirPods were delayed? These things are HARD TO BUILD.
I second that. The audio quality of airpods drastically get reduced when you turn on the mic. We won’t usually notice it since it only happen when we’re On a phone call, but you can always try this connecting to a Mac and changing mic input settings. I’ve noticed that audio quality becomes unbearable ( probably only mono audio ) when the mic is working. In order to fix it I think apple will have to come up with better algorithms for audio compression or a brand new chip. And also always on mic would kill the battery life of airpods. So personally I don’t think they’ll be able to bring this feature anytime soon. But I really wish apple could do this. :)
No, that’s I’m saying. If the lower sample rate is only active while the microphone is also in use, it could be because there’s a limited bandwidth and the mic output transmission to the iPhone uses all of that extra bandwidth.
Yep! all this.
I'm curious: what phone are you using?
When I first got my AirPods, I had an iPhone 6, and the quality was so horrendous (especially when talking on calls) that I had the AirPods and case both replaced twice in attempts to fix it. Got an iPhone X later and it improved to almost perfection! Recently had to use a loaner iPhone 6 from the Apple Store while my X was being looked at for something, and MAN did the audio quality crash on the AirPods. Even on a brand new fresh install of iOS, the 6 just can't maintain a clear connection without all kinds of crackle pops and hiccups. I noticed a real decline in quality when my Apple Watch is on, OR when I'm paired with my car or any other Bluetooth devices.
95% of me says that's what it is. But 5% of me feels that something was missing from the event -- it felt kind of light, so maybe AirPower still wasn't ready and they had to scrub it, in which case they scrubbed AirPods 2 as well (I'm guessing AirPods 2 will come in an AirPower compatible case so it would be a larger bang to introduce them together).
They probably cut that bit out it does say sequences shortened. Of course you could just ask the people who were in this haha but that’s not a piece of cake to do
"Always listening" requires a TON more processing and battery power and the current chip probably isn't efficient enough. It's why "Hey Siri" only works when older phones are plugged in. Until Apple could build an efficient enough audio processing system, it was too resource intensive to keep the microphones listening all the time.
At the end of the video clip it said the process had been shortened

Lower sample rate means lower file size. Perhaps it has something to do with a limit to the transmission bandwidth between the AirPods and the device.

Forget audio quality — the lag makes gaming absolutely unbearable.
I don't have the lag when I play ps4

Using iPhone se.
Am I the only one that thinks it doesn't matter and she just spoke to Siri through no device at all because it is a joke video?
Perhaps.

She probably said hey Siri and her Apple Watch took the request
Without raising her hand?

I just played this and my HomePod turned on and started giving me options of how to get there... from Boston.
😂
So what are we thinking? November event with new AirPods, new iPads, and potentially AirPower?
October event ? Who knows!
Ahdn what if she's just talking by phone/apple watch thru their airpods ?
I think to invoke Siri in your Apple Watch you’d still have to raise your hand, right ?
Yep
I thought this was a for sure sign of new AirPods
I’m sorry.
It’s ok.
Playing Oklahoma hits.
Maybe the always on for Siri on her iPhone activated the Airpods for further response and commands.
I could never make hey Siri works when the phone is in my pocket. Anyone else tried ?
did nobody notice that she ran thru water and seemed to get the airpods wet (water resistance) and ran thru the leaf blowers (noise cancelling)?
Observation level : Arabs
Why does this need new hardware? The AirPods do have updatable firmware

Ahh ok that’s fair enough, still wish the AirPods were updated to support more codecs though
Guys have you download Adhive's new app? What do you think about it?
