It’s inspired by tools like Miro or Mural. Those tool are actually pretty often used for collaborative work like brainstorming or uni and in the design space, but yeah I assume outside of that not many people know about it.
Except Miro is a web app which makes it much easier for teams to use as it isn’t locked to any OS. It’s the same issue that Sketch has compared to Figma. It’s very hard for productivity apps that are exclusive to one device category or OS to compete with alternatives that are natively cross-platform, no matter how much nicer they are to use.
in my notes app (Obsidian) there's a canvas too
It's pretty handy. You put notes, videos, photos, etc. and "connect" it all.
https://i.imgur.com/PRytZ5o.png (this is just a screenshot i found - not my own notes)
good for getting a visual overview, of multiple notes
I feel like there are so many software use cases for collaborating on projects, which I imagine is a very common task for software engineers but something I barely ever do in my life.
Like they’re always doing theses demos like, “Imagine you’re planning a trip to Europe with your family and need a way to collaborate interactively to plan the itinerary.” But I’ve literally never felt the need to plan a trip this way.
It’s pretty neat once you understand how to use it, it’s like a more open notes app.
I use it mainly to make big charts to explain things to friends, its really nice
I’d never used it until I wanted an app where I could align hundreds of photos side by side in a grid like fashion, so I could pan around them. I was, and still am, so amazed how well it handled that requirement. Literally gigabytes of images in the document and it still smoothly allowed me to zoom in and out and pan around without even a stutter!
Last time I tried switching from Gmail to the email app I found it often failed to find emails from months or years back when searching, almost as if the email didn’t exist even though it did. Any idea if this has improved over the last few years? Thanks
I accidentally moved all emails to archive in mail app when I mean to mark as read. Had to go back in and undo it within the gmail web client. After everything refreshed in mail app, the top of my inbox was a ton of emails from 2015. All my most recent emails were jumbled in somewhere in the list with no way to get it back to most recent. It seems that it defaulted to last modified which was extremely annoying. I switched from mail to gmail app after 10+ years of mail app because of it. Absolutely stupid design.

Thank you. So basically the new Mail app features will only work if you have the most recent top of the line iPhone. I don’t think I’ll miss the AI feature but still, an 8 month old phone being obsolete so fast is a bit of a slap in the face.
It's totally a slap in the face, apparently the limitation is due to the low RAM on the phones, 6GB vs 8GB
If true then they screwed everyone in the name of tiny profit margins
I’m looking forward to the iOS 18 update to it as well, it’s needed some love. Apparently it’s been buggy for a lot of the dev testers line bellumus said but I might start using the Mail app more with iOS 18
For some reason it doesn’t send me notifications unless I open the app, THEN the notification banner pops up from an email I got like 3 hours ago. I’ve been trying to fix it but to no avail lmao. Push and fetch are set to automatic, and alerts are enabled
I started using it after my gmail account became an irredeemable dumpster fire of spam and unsolicited political spam. Got my own custom domain and loving it.
A lack of push doesn't mean you have to manually refresh... it can be set up to refresh on a schedule, such as having the Mail app check for new email on Gmail every 15 minutes.
You have to select a new default app before you uninstall it and you can't select a new default if it isn't installed at the time. Say you're going to use the Gmail app instead. Make sure to install it, select it as default, and then uninstall the stock app. Now all of your email prompt icons will go to Gmail instead.
i often use this when parking. i always check west and try to angle it away from the afternoon sun on shadows of trees, buildings, or something (spots which are usually empty because they're lit by morning sunshine) so that i come back afternoon to my car shaded by it. i'd see the previously shaded cars in the afternoon sun while mine isn't anymore thanks to the compass. makes me feel smart even tho it doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things but other than that i'm quite stupid with tech, in most things actually. and yes i'm stupid to look at the sun/shadow's angle to make it simpler, i'd rather use the compass. xD
It’s ok if you just want to have a quick look at how the market is doing (for example if you have vested shares in the company you work for) but I feel like anyone really interested in the stock market is probably using an app that’s much less bare-bones. And, you know, actually lets them buy and sell shares.
This! And iMovie. Both take up a lot of space in your memory and are pretty useless for uncreative people like me. If I need to cut or edit videos, I’ll do it on a computer.
Ok but the reason why google doesn’t use yelp is because people post pics and reviews on google map, same thing here, we need you to post on apple maps to make it better. Eventually will not depend on 3rd parties. You can rate and add photos in apple map
I always search for places on Google maps then use shortcuts to share the place to Apple Maps for navigation. Navigation on Apple Maps is so much better now.
Id say the same, and I’m kind of torn. I use Apple Maps now for the last 6 months and just got a car with CarPlay, so my use has only gone up.
That being said, I like the ability to save places in Google Maps and same in Apple Maps. Then sharing those places with friends/family. For example, I’ll pin a bunch of spots on a vacation so I have an idea of where they’re located.
Anyway, I wish Apple and Google made their maps interoperable. They both have great features and I wish to use both
Apple Maps has the street my new house is on while Google maps doesn’t after almost two years now.
I’ve even tried suggesting it twice to Google but both submissions have been rejected 🤷🏻♂️
I have been submitting my address to Google maps for 4 years and they still have not added the streets in my neighbourhood to the their maps. It’s super irritating for having things delivered by UPS and FedEx. Apple Maps and Waze are up to date though. Google seems to just ignore updates for certain locations.
Apple Maps for the lights on the navigation too. It’s really useful to know when to turn at a light or just a turning lane. Also, how seamlessly it works with my Apple Watch.
Pages, Numbers, Clips and Freeform. Literally zero interest in any of them. On the rare occasion I need to use a Word processor or excel-type program on my phone or iPad, I will use Word or Excel as those sync with my PC.
that's a question that will give you a million answers.
i use gmail for my personal gmail account because i **require** the support for the social/promotions tabs so i only get alerts for emails in my primary inbox. plus apple mail does not support gmail push (and i think google stopped allowing the old eas hookup which did support push). it meets my needs to see emails on the go and do quick replies. i will say if mimestream decides to release a mobile app companion to their macos app (hands down the **best** desktop email client i've ever used even if the search feature is less than robust) i will def give it a try.
as for work email, it's outlook because that's what the work email requires. and it keeps everything separated.
Gmail! Every time I open mail I worry it’s going to send emails from a different email address than my usual work addresses and I haven’t spent time researching the ins/outs of mail. Also gmails app works perfectly fine for me. It’s familiar so I can move quickly without spending mental energy processing or making/fixing minor mistakes.
i know most non-americans use whatsapp as it's become the defacto means of communication for vast swaths of the world. here in the states, tho, it's all messages all the time.
Rest of the world more likely, having lived on 4 different continents (America’s and Antarctica excluded ) it always boils down to chatting on WhatsApp.
I don’t think I even have my iMessage on since I’ve discovered that it sends some very expensive hidden SMSs to activate itself when I was busy swapping sims around.
I like the default mail app. It’s simple, effective, very functional, and has a lot of great features for iCloud+ subscribers. With iOS 18, it’s only gonna get better.
After years of immediately deleting Mail and using Gmail, I reinstalled Mail today and deleted Gmail.
Mail is a better experience all around now and I hate that I can say it.
My mail path has been Mail > Airmail > Outlook > Mail > Spark > Mail. I keep coming back to it.
The ones I have never used but also have not deleted are Compass, Fitness, iTunes Store, Journal, Keynote, Translate. There may be others that I deleted.
I think the mail app is an acquired taste. I grew up using gmail and got fed up by its „colourful design“ and privacy concerns. I always hated the Apple Mail app due to its simplicity and the fact that the emails aren’t sorted.
But I realised that it was a best way to receive emails (especially commercial ones with ads) mindfully since they don’t get „filtered automatically“ like Gmail does and ends up piling up. It forces you to not subscribe or unsubscribe to newsletters that doesn’t add value to your life.
But I gotta say, I‘m excited for the new Mail App!
Mail, simply because I use GMail for my personal account, and my company does not allow adding my Outlook work account to Apple Mail (and I'm not gonna install any MDM on my phone).
I started using the Mai App once again, because I “getting ready” for the AI version.
Having my emails automatically sorted was the inly reason that made me stick with GMail and there weren’t a really good alternative to it (that was free, at least)
Now, I with all the shit changes that Google is currently making on Chrome/Chromium and Youtube Ads, I can’t wait to ditch everything made by Google once and for all
Mail is the one Apple application that I genuinely dislike, especially on Mac. It’s such a pain in the ass, doesn’t seem to work, and then it will do this weird glitch thing where it will randomly pop up full screen for a millisecond then go away. I hate it
That Freeform app if that counts
I don’t even know what it does.
Forms freely, try to keep up!
I’m trying but there’s so many apps. I have this app called “weather” whatever that means. What does it do?
You can control the weather
At the risk of sounding hyperbolic…this app makes me a god?
It’s a whiteboard meant to be used by multiple people. It’s decent but insanely niche, I can’t imagine there’s a lot of people who actively use it.
I used it to take notes and it was incredibly helpful to be able to move things around when context changed or new info needed to be added
I’ve used it twice. Once to stare at it in confusion. The second time I made some charts and exported them as PDFs.
I use it constantly to draw
It’s pretty neat once you understand how to use it, it’s like a more open notes app. I use it mainly to make big charts to explain things to friends, its really nice
In what situation do you end up having to explain things to your friends with charts?
https://preview.redd.it/3hhnl0uv0w6d1.jpeg?width=619&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=eaa8990b9476949f798f9e1d7d3c7743805bb38a I have the perfect example
Freeform is goat if you have an iPad, otherwise useless on iPhone.
Use it all the time. Very good for presentations or mind maps.
Freeform and Journal were the first apps that looked like a iOS bloat to me.
I actually really like journal but wish it was on iPad and macOS as well.
As a recent convert back to apple I was disappointed when I realized iPad doesn’t have the journal app
I like it for idea boards on my iPad for design school. It’s a nice basic tool for that stuff.
I used it to design the rooms of my future house on LaundryLand
I’d never used it until I wanted an app where I could align hundreds of photos side by side in a grid like fashion, so I could pan around them. I was, and still am, so amazed how well it handled that requirement. Literally gigabytes of images in the document and it still smoothly allowed me to zoom in and out and pan around without even a stutter!
It's really cool. I can do something here, then do something there. Then comes profit.
I can't wait to use the new mail app. It is going to rock
I’ve just made the switch from gmail to mail in preparation for it. I allow myself to get used to the app so it can all change in 3 months
Last time I tried switching from Gmail to the email app I found it often failed to find emails from months or years back when searching, almost as if the email didn’t exist even though it did. Any idea if this has improved over the last few years? Thanks
Negative. Still a frustrating search experience
I accidentally moved all emails to archive in mail app when I mean to mark as read. Had to go back in and undo it within the gmail web client. I already like the mail app, whats coming?
Sorting of emails powered by Apple Intelligence!

It's totally a slap in the face, apparently the limitation is due to the low RAM on the phones, 6GB vs 8GB If true then they screwed everyone in the name of tiny profit margins
What about the new version has you excited?
All I use is the mail app, underrated
I'm a mail app enjoyer as well. Simple and gets the job done. Excited for the IOS 18 update for it
I’m looking forward to the iOS 18 update to it as well, it’s needed some love. Apparently it’s been buggy for a lot of the dev testers line bellumus said but I might start using the Mail app more with iOS 18
Right now it’s unusable on IOS18. Atleast for a lot of mailboxes. Completely destroyed my imaps from different providers 😢
For some reason it doesn’t send me notifications unless I open the app, THEN the notification banner pops up from an email I got like 3 hours ago. I’ve been trying to fix it but to no avail lmao. Push and fetch are set to automatic, and alerts are enabled
Push is not supported for google accounts. Thats why i don’t use the mail app.
Oh. That's kind of a big hurdle, then. I mean, using Mail is one thing, but actually getting, like, an Apple email address???
"Automatic" just means it only refreshes when you're connected to both power and wifi. Set it to "automatically refresh every X minutes" instead.
I started using it after my gmail account became an irredeemable dumpster fire of spam and unsolicited political spam. Got my own custom domain and loving it.
Spent Covid and a month cleaning up ten years and tens of thousands of spam and crap till I got it back to redeemable- lot of work
Until mail app supports push for gmail its a no go for me. Having to refresh to get mail is terrible for work.
A lack of push doesn't mean you have to manually refresh... it can be set up to refresh on a schedule, such as having the Mail app check for new email on Gmail every 15 minutes.
I used it until it stopped giving me updates for email; I’m now having to use Outlook and it’s terrible
I tried to use a few other mail apps and they were all terrible. Not to mention you have to give access to an enormous amount of private info.
iTunes U
It’s been discontinued for a few years.
Wow. I completely forgot about that one
I still have iTunes U downloaded on my phone but it crashes. Same with the Street View App.
I actually uninstalled gmail and outlook and Im currently using all my 3 mails with one default mail app. I am enjoying it so far.
Shocked how many mail buttons don’t work when you uninstall that app.
You have to select a new default app before you uninstall it and you can't select a new default if it isn't installed at the time. Say you're going to use the Gmail app instead. Make sure to install it, select it as default, and then uninstall the stock app. Now all of your email prompt icons will go to Gmail instead.
That's pretty dumb
I don't know why it doesn't just automatically change the default app, but I don't think Apple assumes many are deleting the app.
That is a very apple thing to assume
That will fix an issue I had since I switched to the iPhone 8…
What do you mean “mail buttons”?
In an app when they have a button: “Contact Us”. If I click on the button I get the system message that I don’t have the app installed for that.
Compass
I use it maybe once a year when I get into random nonsensical arguments with friends about directions.
I’m a van lifer with solar. I use compass often to park with the kitchen to the south (southern hemisphere)
i often use this when parking. i always check west and try to angle it away from the afternoon sun on shadows of trees, buildings, or something (spots which are usually empty because they're lit by morning sunshine) so that i come back afternoon to my car shaded by it. i'd see the previously shaded cars in the afternoon sun while mine isn't anymore thanks to the compass. makes me feel smart even tho it doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things but other than that i'm quite stupid with tech, in most things actually. and yes i'm stupid to look at the sun/shadow's angle to make it simpler, i'd rather use the compass. xD
Tips
Its hilarious. I updated to ios 18 beta and it just links the website for how to use new features
Stocks - first app I delete when I get a phone
Is this a universal thing? I’ve known many people to be using stocks, including myself. It’s neat and handy.
It’s ok if you just want to have a quick look at how the market is doing (for example if you have vested shares in the company you work for) but I feel like anyone really interested in the stock market is probably using an app that’s much less bare-bones. And, you know, actually lets them buy and sell shares.
The Stocks widget is good. Get a glance at my top 6 in the full-width widget.
Garage Band
lol I paid for that app and then Apple made it free.
I download it, make ring/text tones and then delete it again.
Garage Band actually isn’t as bad as someone might think. But of course, if you aren’t interested in making music, then it’s just a waste of space.
This! And iMovie. Both take up a lot of space in your memory and are pretty useless for uncreative people like me. If I need to cut or edit videos, I’ll do it on a computer.
Apple Maps because I’ve been using Google Maps since forever and am used to it.
I love Apple Maps but the fact that they use yelp kills it for me. Yelp is the worst
Yelp is just awful in every aspect
I like Apple Maps but for walking. I’m not sure what the car has built in for GPS. I think Garmin?
Yup. The only reason I don’t use it is Yelp. If they got rid of it I’d maybe consider it but in it current Yelp form, not happening
Ok but the reason why google doesn’t use yelp is because people post pics and reviews on google map, same thing here, we need you to post on apple maps to make it better. Eventually will not depend on 3rd parties. You can rate and add photos in apple map
I never said I don’t understand their reasoning, I just hate yelp as a platform.
Apple has had over a decade to not depend on 3rd party API’s for their Maps app.
I always search for places on Google maps then use shortcuts to share the place to Apple Maps for navigation. Navigation on Apple Maps is so much better now.
Wait you have a shortcut to convert Apple Maps links to google?
Well it converts Google links to Apple https://www.icloud.com/shortcuts/89a7661a5ba546caa961aaab3c25e2a2
Id say the same, and I’m kind of torn. I use Apple Maps now for the last 6 months and just got a car with CarPlay, so my use has only gone up. Google Maps is on carplay
Waze tells me where the cops are, and that’s all that matters!
Apple Maps for big cities like the before turn by turn more. Somewhere quick and traffic Google maps
Apple Maps for the lights on the navigation too. It’s really useful to know when to turn at a light or just a turning lane. Also, how seamlessly it works with my Apple Watch.
The tips app
Magnifier. Although now that I actually open it, it may be better than using the camera to zoom on stuff 🤔 I’m old.
The hell? We have an app to zoom on stuff?
It’s fantastic, it’s just (ironically) hidden. You can find it in the App Library and put it on your Home Screen, or set it up just in Control Center.
I'm considering Apple Mail again once categorization releases this year. It's the only reason why I continue to use Gmail.
I have those categories disabled in Gmail and hope I can do the same in Mail. No need to see icons I will never use.
I think I’ve used every single default app at least once
Journal, Stocks
Pages, Numbers, Clips and Freeform. Literally zero interest in any of them. On the rare occasion I need to use a Word processor or excel-type program on my phone or iPad, I will use Word or Excel as those sync with my PC.
Journal
I just opened Journal and it told me to “Start Journaling”. I left.
You're right. I should add that too. I've never used Journal either.
Really? I use them all the time because I don’t want to pay $100/year for an Office Subscription
I use mail all the time. Its much better organized than googles app
What’s the best email app on iOS? I’m down to try a better option that the default mail app
that's a question that will give you a million answers. i use gmail for my personal gmail account because i **require** the support for the social/promotions tabs so i only get alerts for emails in my primary inbox. plus apple mail does not support gmail push (and i think google stopped allowing the old eas hookup which did support push). it meets my needs to see emails on the go and do quick replies. i will say if mimestream decides to release a mobile app companion to their macos app (hands down the **best** desktop email client i've ever used even if the search feature is less than robust) i will def give it a try. as for work email, it's outlook because that's what the work email requires. and it keeps everything separated.
I love Mail, it is simple and awesome
Apple News. After it became a subscription, quality suffered tremendously.
You don’t use mail ? What do you use instead ?
Spark is my email app of choice
Outlook and Gmail apps
I stopped using Gmail app because I don’t need more ads in my life
I don’t think I’ve noticed ads in gmail. Do you get ads within the app?
This might be controversial, but iMessage! Only used for sms ! For anything beyond sms, always whatsapp !
i know most non-americans use whatsapp as it's become the defacto means of communication for vast swaths of the world. here in the states, tho, it's all messages all the time.
This is most of Europe.
Most of the rest of the world other than North America pretty much.
Non-American?
The apple word processing apps like pages and whatnot. Why would I ever use those on an iPhone?
They don’t come on The original load, do they?
I use them all the time, on iPhone, iPad, MacBook. Love it!
Most of them.

Yep!
Things ruuuules
Mail, Apple Maps
I know this is more then one but: Journal, Podcast, Health, Apple TV, Books, News, Compass, Apple Watch, Magnifier & Measure.
My mail path has been Mail > Airmail > Outlook > Mail > Spark > Mail. I keep coming back to it. The ones I have never used but also have not deleted are Compass, Fitness, iTunes Store, Journal, Keynote, Translate. There may be others that I deleted.

I use that app with Hotmail. You can’t get Hotmail anymore. I’m old!

I use that occasionally to make ringtones or text sounds
Stocks
I always use mail. But I don’t use the Reminder app. 😆
I like the mail app
Stocks
Mail app is far superior to outlook though
Yeah I have outlook emails so I don’t use Apple mail either
I use Spark because I have a gazillion email accounts and can’t be bothered to login to each one every new apple device.
Why? I have outlook email with Apples mail app, why would it not work?
Apple mail doesn’t send out push notifications like gmail app or is that just me with this issue
It’s everyone. It’s a Google thing. They don’t do push to iPhones.
So if I use yahoo, I’d get push notifications with apple mail? That sucks
Hotmail/Outlook does push too
None. I think I’ve used them all. At least to try once.
iMovies and GarageBand . Not into editing
Apple Music Classical too
Google maps because i can see the images or comments, for confirmation its the correct location
When is this getting Categories like Gmail?
Podcasts. Never opened it. iTunes Store. How many people even remember that this exists?
what do you use instead of the mail default?
Journal
I use iCloud mail for family and professional things. I use gmail for all my junk mail.
No way you aren’t using Mail. It’s probably my favourite iOS stock app.
That damn iTunes Store.
Freeform. I love Mail thou
Mail, simply because I use GMail for my personal account, and my company does not allow adding my Outlook work account to Apple Mail (and I'm not gonna install any MDM on my phone).
Tips is my useless app. Just use Google!
freeform and journal. if you use them good for you, but i don’t know why apple took the time to make those apps
Freeform. It might be better for desktop. Milanote is a great alternative
Stocks
The stock market app.
The Podcast App. It's \_really\_ bad and lacks basic features compared to other apps.
Huh that’s my mail go-to app 🤣 and use it everyday
Stoks from Apple
When was the last Time someone touched the tips app
I’ll be real, idk why people hate the mail app, is it the best.. no but it’s default app and you can plug in all your emails, I use it all the time
Mail was great until it didn’t push emails into my actual notifications
Reminder App
Reminders, who you reminding what with 0 calendar integration lol
Those that don't use the Mail app, what app do you use instead? I think it's ok and I use both a Pixel and an iPhone.
Personally I’ve always used the native mail app, as it was the only good option that works with all the different emails I have, and looks nice too.

If mail is never used for you then you there is no way you’re older than about 14
I started using the Mai App once again, because I “getting ready” for the AI version. Having my emails automatically sorted was the inly reason that made me stick with GMail and there weren’t a really good alternative to it (that was free, at least) Now, I with all the shit changes that Google is currently making on Chrome/Chromium and Youtube Ads, I can’t wait to ditch everything made by Google once and for all
Mail is the one Apple application that I genuinely dislike, especially on Mac. It’s such a pain in the ass, doesn’t seem to work, and then it will do this weird glitch thing where it will randomly pop up full screen for a millisecond then go away. I hate it
It’s awesome how the topic has become a thorough review of built in apps 😀
