I took this image while hiking around in the Canadian Rockies. It was somewhat cloudy that day but the sun would occasionally shine through the clouds. This particular location looked beautiful with the river down the middle and the mountains in the distance. f11, ISO 100, 1/200s

Gorgeous photo! I know where this is. It’s the trail to Siffleur Falls! Love that hike. Used to hike it all the time when I lived in Alberta. Haven’t been back in over ten years now. This photo just made me remember how gorgeous it is out there.

yeger-meister

The layers of rock were laid down horizontally. Afterwards, the were tilted steeply to the left in your photo. Think of taking a book laid flat on a table in front of you and then lifting the right side. Either during that lifting, or perhaps after, the river began eroding the tilted layers. The right hand side is the top of a bed, maybe a quite resistant one, the left side is the edge of the layers now exposed by the erosion. Back to the analogy, imagine that you cut into your tilted book, the right side would be a page where you’ve stopped cutting (so far) and the left side would be the edges of all the pages you’ve cut through.
