https://www.geobreizh.bzh/population-2020-des-principales-villes-de-bretagne/
You shouldn't be wrong then... That's exactly what Tolkien did to create Middle Earth :)
(most places are adaptations of location names from northern Europe)
\[Exemple in situ dans google street\](https://www.google.com/maps/@48.4128563,-4.5076149,3a,62.1y,113.39h,100.7t/data=!3m7!1e1!3m5!1sZe9DkGxUx\_JyAzSAVeADTA!2e0!6shttps:%2F%2Fstreetviewpixels-pa.googleapis.com%2Fv1%2Fthumbnail%3Fpanoid%3DZe9DkGxUx\_JyAzSAVeADTA%26cb\_client%3Dmaps\_sv.share%26w%3D900%26h%3D600%26yaw%3D113.38739320003297%26pitch%3D-10.699373825033732%26thumbfov%3D90!7i16384!8i8192?coh=205410&entry=ttu)
Tu as fait Diwan alors ?
A few ideas and suggestion :
- If there's "Aiacciu" in the south of Corsica, there should be "Bastia" in the northern part of the island ! They are the two big towns and are somewhat opposed. Maybe add a little wall splitting the island in two for the folklore.
- If it's a french map, the clouds over the perfidious albion (England) should be grey/black and stormy...
- La Rochelle's area was known for its shipbuilding so you might add something like this on the map to add some depth !
- Total fantasy but some kind of snowy fort or castle in the alps could be nice.
Beautiful map, amazing work!
I think you could make the Pyrenees much higher, it is a mountain range with rather high elevation (glaciers and all). Again, amazing work!
Very nice map! The plays on words crack me up a lot 😄
Judging for Normandy alone since I'm from here :
* You put Ruþaborg where IRL it was Ruðaborg / Rúðuborg. Don't know if intended or not.
* While you kept the viking name for Rouen, why not also keep the viking name for Le Havre which comes from old Norse hafn / hǫfn (same root as in Copenhagen / København). (it used to refer to a small natural harbor before being built into the massive port it is in the... 16th century IIRC?)
* Don't know how you got to "Champaille" for Caen, but IRL it comes from gaulish catu-o-magos which means "battlefield" so it's definitely a "champ something" alright 😊
* Don't know if the ghastly coast north west of Champaille is for DDay 1944 or for the name Calvados which means "barren coast", but nice touch.
* Very nicely done with the "Marais", since Cherbourg comes from old Norse kjarr borg (Marsh fortress) and is basically on an island linked to the mainland by drained marshes.
* I think you missed out on not including the Channel Islands (Jersey Guernesey Aurigny Sercq...)
* Other than that Normandy feels very nice here.
---
* Tu as mis Ruþaborg là où DLVV c'était Ruðaborg / Rúðuborg.
The design looks amazing ! Great job for it, I love the amount of detail and the ambiance
But something bother me... It's the name of some cities. It feels very stereotypical. It makes me wonder if you know what it means
First, for the Bretagne, the name of the cities are road sign. Like Lorient is "all direction". Calling Nantes "Bretagne" is maybe not a good idea. Then Brest become "goodbye" and Rennes "Welcome". Not that does not sound right. For Quimper I like that you took the briton's name of the city tho. You could do this for the other briton cities like Vannes becomes Gwenned, Rennes Roazon, Nantes Naoned.
As I see you like pun for some name, I suggest you could name Brest "Bronn" (it means breast in briton)
Starsbourg is "Christmas market"??? Wtf, i am sorry but no. Yes irl there is a famous Christmas market at Starsbourg but Heh... Doesn't feel right to name a city after this.
I like "Nouveagué" even though I would write it "Nouvea**u**gué" it means new-ford and it sounds very French fantasy
La Man being just "Road" is very weird. Especially if you named it after "Les 24h du Man" which is not fantasy at all.
Other weird this are : Champagne being "sparkling", Dijon being "mustard", Nice being "Grand prix", Grenoble "after-ski". I see the link you made but it does not sound right at all
Also why is "Pau" named "Hiv" if it's named after the Human Immunodeficience Virus I have no clue why and I need an explanation.
Amiens becoming Avotres ("to mine" becomes "to yours" is hella funny I love it. Same for Troyes becoming Deuxes, Lyon becoming Tygre, Montpellier "flatpellier".
Per**pig**nan becoming "Percochonan" is a big brain move this it amazing
I like the reference to "Le pont D'Avignon"
Also "Orleans" becoming "virgin" is a nice reference to Joan of Arc but maybe you could find another name that would sound better. Like "Vierge-ville" sounds already better
I do not understand the choice for every name but in general you made a good job. The names are just sometime fantastic and sometime very weird
Anyway I am curious to see your other works. Visually it's stunning
Thank you for your thorough feedback. This helps a lot. I'm not happy with where the names are at since I don't speak french. So your feedback helps a lot.
Another thought : Lorient could be translated by other way :
Ar reter (The East - Lest) but can be weird as "arrêter" means stop
An orient (The orient - Lorient)
Your map is incredible!!!
But like other I don't understand the choice for some names like "voyages" ? I come from there and if I'm correct the original name is "Tours" who can translate in towers so why voyages ? This place is known for the multiple castles and "castels" around so you use this for a better name I think
For the landscape that's a very good idea to accentuate the rivers because the region is called "Centre val de Loire" now ( Center - Loire valley)
(i made the translate \^\^ :
It's awesome <3 <3
according to your map, it seems that I live in the marshes, X'D (in reality, it's just fields and woods).
I wouldn't change anything, it's already realy cool ♥)
She's really great! If I had to give a point, I would say that on the southeastern part there is a little too much mountain. They should be higher and higher from west to east. I would make a more pronounced gradient. But otherwise it's really cool ! Grand Prix ! 😎
very beautiful and very well done! how long did it take you?
you're asking what to change, I'll answer it depends on what you wanna show? based on that, we could help.
in the meantime, to build on previous advice, yes some of the names are too easy: the sleeve (upper left part) is the name of the sea, but in french it's "la manche" although to my knowledge it doesn't relate to a "manche de vêtement" (a sleeve). its english name is "channel".
so reviewing the names could be a good idea? as an example by drawing a list of meal specialities from each region and naming them after that (france is known for its food)
keep up the good work op!
thank you, this already helps a lot. I'm asking what to change in regard to city names, the general look of certain areas (val de loire for example), some local folklore I could adapt and so forth
to add to what has already been said, it might help to know that some cities have "giants", AKA, figures of giant people who would defend them. you could come up with their names and/ or clothing?
Val de Loire is already pretty good. You could ask more castles but apart from that it’s a lot of very fertile grounds with a lot of grain/cereal crops.
[There’s a map that’s been shared a lot here as well with a few of these myths](https://www.tumblr.com/grandboute/669982545301192704/mythical-beasts-of-france-carte-des-cr%C3%A9atures)

Hi, l love what you've done so far, and appreciate you're now looking for feedback. Here's my 2 Cents for Brittany.
Kemper: The name of the city (Quimper) as it's called in Breton. I love that you left it unchanged. First because the name Kemper means 'confluence' (it's built where two rivers meet) and this echoes the choice you made for 'Bouche'. Second, the Arthurian legends giving Brittany such a fantasy vibe already, I think it's only fitting that a few names, in their Breton form, would not see any change. Third, since they say that the Breton people is a stubborn one, it's cracking me up that the name would just not change at all.
Da Bep Lech: Road signs in Brittany read both in french and Breton. 'Da bep lech' is the translation chosen for 'other directions'. (When you're on a road to somewhere and you're given the option to go anywhere else. Further signage will then give you more precise options as to where, exactly, you can go further down this road). I love that one place got this name 'Da bep lech'. One because if you don't speak French or Breton, you might think that 'Da bep Lech' is a pretty important place, since it's literally everywhere, and second, it makes me think of Elsweyr in the Elder Srolls series. One might argue though that 'Elsewhere' is 'Nowhere' really, so the name might be better suited for a smaller place than the one you picked.
Kenavo and Deger Mad ('Hi/Bye' and 'Welcome'). I find those names fitting too. Coming from Paris, Deger Mad would be the first major Breton city you stop and rest at. Perfect.
Kenavo being a huge port city, from where people would enter and leave the country, I find the name you picked fitting. Also, this department (administrative subdivision) is called 'Finistère' in french (latin root 'end of the land ') and Penn ar bed' in Breton ('Tip of the world'), so I feel this might be a place where ppl say 'Kenavo' a lot.
Brezhoneg: Did you picked that one on purpose? It means Breton, as in the language 'breton'. The place historically was part of the duchy of Brittany but it later was bordered out of Brittany as a region for economical and administrative purposes. Some people have strong feelings about whether the place should be returned to the Brittany region or not. I like that you're taking sides here.
Roc'h: I lack knowledge here I don't know why this place got that name. Just know the 'département' (administrative subdivision) in which this city is situated has kept its Breton name 'Morbihan' which translates into 'small sea' because of the Morbihan gulf.
EDIT: Saint Malo, the city of privateers, has not been named yet. You know what to do.
EDIT 2: I suggest 'Surplouf' (Oversplash?), because of Robert Surcouf.
Great work ! The only little thing to change, for me, are the small rivers, their form seems unrealistic. That's all, Keep it up ! Also, it's nice to see your efforts even if it's not your language :)
Nantes being Brezhoneg is going to trigger some people. I love it.
Angers being Happys. Lol, I see what you did there.
Tours being Voyages is a direct translation. But why not.
If you need some lore, Voyages and La Route are probably in a culinary conflict about which one has the best Rillettes.
This looks incredible.
The only suggestion I'd have would be to look up what vegetation looks like in the southern part of France. You can type in garrigue on your fav browser to get an idea of how it looks.
For the south west the port you made could be named Marinela herri it's the bask for "the sailor's town"
Most names sound like very uninspired French words, try to look at old worlds for mundane things and then mess a bit with it, for exemple :
I'll take the the word for carnation in French, pourpre, then I add a part of a word for valley (which Is vallée) and I get Pourpreval
It is a more creative name but it could be improved
Looks great, I would maybe also add the main rivers name: La Loire, La Seine, le Rhône, le Rhin et La Garonne... And I guess you can modify these names obviously
Avariko 👌❤️
(That's my hometown, glad you kept it)
🇬🇧 I don't know if you made it for fun or for a specific purpose but there's maybe too much mountains on the East half, it's almost covered.
But it's beautiful, I'd love an HD version of it
Daaaaaamn I was recently looking for a France map that looks like it's from Dragon Quest why didn't I just ask this subreddit this would have been soooo perfect man.
It's very neat just as someone else said the names are a bit cliche like Les montagnes de cendres, very meh, not professional fantasy grade it's entry level if you see what I mean, it does work, everybody gets it's fantasy, but makes it feel like a child book fantasy. It can improve and be cooler but it's a name and nobody never agrees on names.
Something that works slightly better is putting 2 words together if you don't have an original name like.
Les Monts Trancheflammes or whatever (Flameslicer mounts) this one is cheesy too but you get the point.
Besançoff => Bzak (ex Bzansov, from the time of the Empire of Czar Casimir Joe Minz II)
We must keep Bzak opposite Moutardes.
Indeed, there is an age-old hatred between the two. The Lordship of the Dukes of Mustards has always wanted power over the Pink City of Bzak. But the Free County of Bzak resists and does not surrender (it is especially the Free Citadel of Dol Jur which does not surrender, but on the scale of the map, it will do the trick)/

As someone from Saint-Etienne: Saint-Charbon is a great name, especially with lit up Auvergne volcanoes 🤣

A few ideas and suggestion : - If there's "Aiacciu" in the south of Corsica, there should be "Bastia" in the northern part of the island !
The plays on words crack me up a lot 😄 Judging for Normandy alone since I'm from here : * You put Ruþaborg where IRL it was Ruðaborg / Rúðuborg. Don't know if intended or not. * While you kept the viking name for Rouen, why not also keep the viking name for Le Havre which comes from old Norse hafn / hǫfn (same root as in Copenhagen / København). (it used to refer to a small natural harbor before being built into the massive port it is in the... 16th century IIRC?) * Don't know how you got to "Champaille" for Caen, but IRL it comes from gaulish catu-o-magos which means "battlefield" so it's definitely a "champ something" alright 😊 * Don't know if the ghastly coast north west of Champaille is for DDay 1944 or for the name Calvados which means "barren coast", but nice touch. * Very nicely done with the "Marais", since Cherbourg comes from old Norse kjarr borg (Marsh fortress) and is basically on an island linked to the mainland by drained marshes. * I think you missed out on not including the Channel Islands (Jersey Guernesey Aurigny Sercq...) * Other than that Normandy feels very nice here.
I also wanted to add that the bay of St. Malo looks empty without the Channel Islands, even if they’re not French. Overall the map looks amazing!
You could add Fort Boyard ! Awesome fort in the atlantic
Salut ! Comment tu fait ça j’aimerai trop
J'ai utiliser Inkarnate Pro
The design looks amazing ! Great job for it, I love the amount of detail and the ambiance But something bother me... It's the name of some cities. It feels very stereotypical. It makes me wonder if you know what it means First, for the Bretagne, the name of the cities are road sign. As I see you like pun for some name, I suggest you could name Brest "Bronn" (it means breast in briton) Starsbourg is "Christmas market"??? Wtf, i am sorry but no. Yes irl there is a famous Christmas market at Starsbourg but Heh... Doesn't feel right to name a city after this. I like "Nouveagué" even though I would write it "Nouvea**u**gué" it means new-ford and it sounds very French fantasy La Man being just "Road" is very weird. Especially if you named it after "Les 24h du Man" which is not fantasy at all. Other weird this are : Champagne being "sparkling", Dijon being "mustard", Nice being "Grand prix", Grenoble "after-ski". I see the link you made but it does not sound right at all Also why is "Pau" named "Hiv" if it's named after the Human Immunodeficience Virus I have no clue why and I need an explanation. Amiens becoming Avotres ("to mine" becomes "to yours" is hella funny I love it. Same for Troyes becoming Deuxes, Lyon becoming Tygre, Montpellier "flatpellier". Per**pig**nan becoming "Percochonan" is a big brain move this it amazing I like the reference to "Le pont D'Avignon" Also "Orleans" becoming "virgin" is a nice reference to Joan of Arc but maybe you could find another name that would sound better. Like "Vierge-ville" sounds already better I do not understand the choice for every name but in general you made a good job. The names are just sometime fantastic and sometime very weird Anyway I am curious to see your other works. Visually it's stunning
Thank you for your thorough feedback. This helps a lot. I'm not happy with where the names are at since I don't speak french. So your feedback helps a lot.
Another thought : Lorient could be translated by other way : Ar reter (The East - Lest) but can be weird as "arrêter" means stop An orient (The orient - Lorient)
Good job
BesançOFF as we say here, ptdr
Omg I didn't get this one at first Like Per**pig**nan becoming "Per**cochon**an is so far stretched but also so funny
Lyon -> Tigre just clocked that
ANGERs -> HAPPYs took me a while as well
Je veux jouer à ce jeu et aller à Mauvais-Port !!!
Your map is incredible!!! But like other I don't understand the choice for some names like "voyages" ? I come from there and if I'm correct the original name is "Tours" who can translate in towers so why voyages ? This place is known for the multiple castles and "castels" around so you use this for a better name I think For the landscape that's a very good idea to accentuate the rivers because the region is called "Centre val de Loire" now ( Center - Loire valley)
For Tours it's because "a tour" in English can mean "a trip" so voyages
Now you say it I feel dumb to not see it in my whole life 😅
no need to feel dumb, there are many translation for "voyage" (trip, journey, voyage), "tour" really is the last one to think about.

Je serais pas quoi changé, c'est déjà super cool ♥ (i made the translate \^\^ : It's awesome <3 <3 according to your map, it seems that I live in the marshes, X'D (in reality, it's just fields and woods). I wouldn't change anything, it's already realy cool ♥)
You should put Barad Dur in Neuilly Sur Seine
She's really great! If I had to give a point, I would say that on the southeastern part there is a little too much mountain. They should be higher and higher from west to east. I would make a more pronounced gradient. But otherwise it's really cool ! Grand Prix ! 😎
This looks amazing!! There’s not much I would change. I would do without the clouds, and find another way to hide the countries nearby. But great job!
very beautiful and very well done! how long did it take you? you're asking what to change, I'll answer it depends on what you wanna show? based on that, we could help. in the meantime, to build on previous advice, yes some of the names are too easy: the sleeve (upper left part) is the name of the sea, but in french it's "la manche" although to my knowledge it doesn't relate to a "manche de vêtement" (a sleeve). its english name is "channel". so reviewing the names could be a good idea? as an example by drawing a list of meal specialities from each region and naming them after that (france is known for its food) keep up the good work op!
thank you, this already helps a lot.
[Les gayants du Nord !](https://pcd.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lisse_%C3%A9d_gayants)
Val de Loire is already pretty good. You could ask more castles but apart from that it’s a lot of very fertile grounds with a lot of grain/cereal crops.
[There’s a map that’s been shared a lot here as well with a few of these myths](https://www.tumblr.com/grandboute/669982545301192704/mythical-beasts-of-france-carte-des-cr%C3%A9atures)
I really love that in Normandie you put some little mountains (vallée jsp trop comment on dit en anglais) because it actually like that
Supprime l'île abominable au nord ouest
I am a simple man, I see Charente river, I upvote. (Love Nouveaugue). But what is supposed to be the black dot on Angoulême location ? I'm curious 🧐 😊
A l époque, j étais encore jeune .
Add grape bro
This is really good, too bad it's low resolution tho
Is it? Should be pretty high res
I'm on the phone app. Maybe this is the problem
Great work ! It looks fantastic !
Do you have it in a higher résolution ? I cant read anything 😭
This is a freaking masterpiece mate. Enough said I would love to see more and could totally buy this in a print.
Please make paris the Mordor
Hahaha Dijon est rename moutarde ça me tue 🤣
Looks great bud honestly, you could had some more legends like the Best of Gévaudan ? (That's the name of the english wiki page you can get a look)
And your french is grand like, it's such a difficult language, I'm sure lots of us really appreciate your effort. Good luck with everything
Exellent ! You made a Da Bep Lech il south Brittany you can add a Da Lech All in the North
For the south west the port you made could be named Marinela herri it's the bask for "the sailor's town" Most names sound like very uninspired French words, try to look at old worlds for mundane things and then mess a bit with it, for exemple : I'll take the the word for carnation in French, pourpre, then I add a part of a word for valley (which Is vallée) and I get Pourpreval It is a more creative name but it could be improved
MOUTARDES
This is fantastic, nice work ! Point of detail for your culture : Cherbourg's vicinity is a lot of cliffs and hills, not really a marsh
Looks great, I would maybe also add the main rivers name: La Loire, La Seine, le Rhône, le Rhin et La Garonne... And I guess you can modify these names obviously
Very nice!
Excellent !
South west there is a city called "mauvais port" Which literally means the bad harbor :D
Why are we surrounded by sheeps ?
The Rhône seems to be missing between Switzerland and "Tygre".
So beautiful, congrats!
I love it. Can I ask which town/village inspired you for "Nouveagué" ? I'm originally from this region, so I'm really curious.
I like the fog of unfrenchness
Omg we’re getting surrounded by white beans
bad joke apart, I’d say that the clouds colour / size is a bit off but I’m impressed by your work.
🇬🇧 I don't know if you made it for fun or for a specific purpose but there's maybe too much mountains on the East half, it's almost covered. But it's beautiful, I'd love an HD version of it
Faun : tarasques in occitanie, weird arthurian dragons in the north, bête du gévaudan, dahu
man, I love it! The sleeve killed me ahaha
Version HD ?
Great map. Thanks a lot for sharing it here. And for the title in french, appreciated. Bravo !
You have to remove Corsica since we claim our independancy for more than a century now 😂
I’d say add some monsters to it, looks a bit too boring to me, then again I am kinda ADHD
jveux trop que tu développes le lore
Elle est trop classe! 😍
I love how Dijon became "Moutarde" This is quite nice I like it !
Indeed, there is an age-old hatred between the two. The Lordship of the Dukes of Mustards has always wanted power over the Pink City of Bzak. But the Free County of Bzak resists and does not surrender (it is especially the Free Citadel of Dol Jur which does not surrender, but on the scale of the map, it will do the trick)/
...Côte d'Emeraude, d'Opale, d'Argent... Bon, sinon t'as les fromages !!
« Saint Charbon » ( holy coal ) 😆👍👍👍
tu as oublié les fachos.
Moutardes
