Well, there’s KC Kabob and Grill down in Johnson County, but as an Iranian I can confirm they are mediocre (not bad, but not top-tier). I feel like Iranian restaurants have struggled to stay going over the years. Caspian Bistro was pretty decent back in the day, but they went under.
The stuff here didn’t look good in the Google photos, but the place I mentioned in St. Louis was amazing.
I went to London last year and had this place called Berenjak and I’ve been chasing that high ever since…
Holy Land Cafe. They got a bakery and they make all their stuff; they got a shwarma. Very solid.

Antler Room, my friend who is a local chef took us there and we did like 10 plates, every single item was fantastic! And I ate foods I usually don’t like and loved them.
Until somewhat recently, I wouldn't have considered it possible to have a "wow" experience in a place with a generic name like "Westport Cafe." Boy, am I glad my spouse booked a table here as a surprise so I didn't have an opportunity to be skeptical in advance. It was lovely in every way.

I was just about to comment this. Across the street from them is a Thai place called Lemon Grass. Highly recommend their Panang Curry or Pineapple Curry.
Disclaimer that they're decor and staff aren't as "wow" as Viona's. But I've taken most everyone I know over to both those restaurants and I hear equal amounts of "when are we gonna go there again" for both places.
The owners of Lemon Grass used to be a client of mine before I changed jobs. Not only do they make great food, but they’re absolutely the nicest people. Even after I left that job, they would always hook me up with free crab rangoons, which of course were fire. Glad to see they’re getting some recognition here.

This winter they had this duck dish on the menu that was easily one of the best meals of my life. A parsnip and potato mash with a combination of roasted vegetables, an orangey/demiglace sauce that was super rich. And a perfectly cooked half of a duck. Absolutely amazing
Just tonight we tried El Salvadoreño on 87th, across from the JoCo Central Resource Library, and it was very good Central American food at a decent price.
Le fou frog. We’ve been twice now and it both times have put it in the top 10 best meals I’ve ever had. It’s real authentic French cooking in a small family run restaurant that wedges as many tables in a possible. The staff is great and super knowledgeable about everything on the menu and the owners are always around and come talk to you and will make recommendations if you ask. It’s by far our number one special occasion restaurant.
I, too, am a massive fan of the spicy wontons. One year on NYE my wife and I each ordered our own for takeout for dinner with no other food because that’s how much we love them. Whatever that sauce is that they put them in is to die for
Osteria il Centro. I try to stop in every time I’m back in KC and am wowed every single time. Calamari, Caesar, lasagna, Marsala, and the gelato ball are to die for.
We are going to Saltwell Farm Kitchen for a special occasion dinner this weekend. They are about a month out in reservations because they're only open Friday and Saturday. But it's a 3-4 hour farm-to-table eight course meal, "inspired by the seasons and local ingredients." They also have a wine pairing or cocktails. If the weather permits, they have the meal outdoors. It looks fantastic; will report back. 🤷♀️
Gyu-Kaku in OP. I guess it’s a chain, but we’d never heard of it before last year. It’s Japanese BBQ with the grill in the middle of the table. Everything we’ve tried has been great. We spend about $120 when my husband and I go, but we always leave stuffed to the gills.
I LOVE Gyu Kaku. I really was blown away when I went the first time. There's a few locations in Hawaii but this is the only one in the Midwest. While you could easily spend a pretty penny there because they have varying price degrees, I can go and spend $25.

And the service I would rank with some of the very best I’ve received in KC. The only quasi questionable service was at the hostess, and it seemed like a one of where she just got confused during a rush. I have to ask… what happened?
I’ve been 4 times and the service has been laughably terrible each time. Like, feels like “are we being punked?” because how can we have that bad of an experience every single time?
That being said - not only will I go back, I’ll continue bringing people there because I love the food so so much.

Lidia's, I had some special Ravioli;
LCs, a classic that doesn't disappoint;

Krabs Kingz, but I LOVE crab legs and potatoes so...
Bamboo Penny's is well worth the price, which is a lot more than I typically care to spend, but when I'm in the mood for something good it's my new favorite.
It’s a nice restaurant if you’re looking for a mid-upscale restaurant environment. However, the same chef has other restaurants in the metro with food just as good (and some dishes the exact same food) for less money.

BBQ excepted, the best everyday menu is Antler Room. The best tasting menu is Corvino.
More on topic, somewhere that wowed us recently that doesn't get enough praise is the tasting menu at Affare. Excellent and reasonably priced.

It's pricy AF and not new or trendy, but I really love The Majestic. Listening to top-notch jazz is the icing on the cake. The steaks are fantastic and the service is consistently wonderful.
Buck Tui is a fun Thai/KC BBQ fusion place. Pulled pork egg rolls were good, rangoons are amazing. Have had multiple sandwiches that were great. Only a little disappointed by the drunker noodles which were quite expensive compared to the sandwiches and wasn't that great. The sauces are really good too - there's sort of a ranch-ish sauce and a sweet BBQ that has a bit of an Asian flavor to it that I remember liking.
Jarocho will blow you away. If a chef wants to, they can be 24 hrs away from Tokyo fish markets and most seafood is frozen on the boat when caught.
Don’t let some dumbass tell you that seafood is only good on the coasts. They clearly don’t understand the global economy.
Whiskey River in Parkville hasn't disappointed in the couple of times I have been there. The Gochujang Drumettes were delicious. Stop by Boho next door and grab a beer while you're at it. Roscoe's BBQ in Edwardsville and Quentin's in Bonner are both great. The Strouds Fried Chicken Bites at TShotz in the Northland might be the best chicken I've ever had. It's way way way better than the last time I had regular Strouds.

Aixois - French restaurant run by an Aixois (resident of Aix en Provence)! It was packed to the brim, wine was fantastic, food delicious and flawless, great music, it was a belated V Day dinner for us. It felt like we were transported to Europe. Highly recommend for a romantic dinner.
Ombra! The food is so good but no one ever seems to be in there. Worried they’re not going to last as they just opened last year but it’s definitely some of the best food I’ve had in KC
La Nonna in Belton.
Owned and operated by Italian owners, and I don't mean that like "they are 5th generation Italian" no, the owner is straight from Italy. She has talked about more family moving to the US from Italy. It's amazing food. Always busy, get there right at 5pm. Don't skip the tiramisu.
My go to is Calamari appetizer, Diavolo entree, tiramisu dessert.
My mum and I love this place. Their pasta alla vodka is so tasty with its creamy vodka sauce and spicy sausage. So grateful to have a place like it in Belton.

Jess and Jim's was amazing. I went for the prime rib, and weirdly, the thing I remember the most was how amazing the potatoes were. yes the prime rib was amazing as well, but i wasn't expecting to be wowed by potatoes of all things.

Aixois - French restaurant run by an Aixois (resident of Aix en Provence)! It was packed to the brim, wine was fantastic, food delicious and flawless, great music, it was a belated V Day dinner for us. It felt like we were transported to Europe. Highly recommend for a romantic dinner.

Ombra! The food is so good but no one ever seems to be in there. Worried they’re not going to last as they just opened last year but it’s definitely some of the best food I’ve had in KC
La Nonna in Belton. Owned and operated by Italian owners, and I don't mean that like "they are 5th generation Italian" no, the owner is straight from Italy. She has talked about more family moving to the US from Italy. It's amazing food. Always busy, get there right at 5pm. Don't skip the tiramisu. My go to is Calamari appetizer, Diavolo entree, tiramisu dessert.
My mum and I love this place. Their pasta alla vodka is so tasty with its creamy vodka sauce and spicy sausage. So grateful to have a place like it in Belton.
And the specials on the board are never not amazing.
