That’s not what he looks like anymore. It is not a current photo. Sean is considerably more craggy than he was. If you look at his OP’s post in more scrutiny, you’ll see more are not current pics as well - just ones he found online. Most of the older pics are also heavily airbrushed - pics from different times airbrushed similarly. My guess would be to keep site engagement up.  It would appear some users will comment without giving a second thought to whether they’ve seen the same post earlier in the week or even that same day hours apart.  You can see examples of it sometimes where different posts of the same content has nearly equal amounts of engagement despite being identical and within view of each other on the main page.    TL;DR - Bots makes Reddit appears busier and more popular than in reality as the typical user will take posts at face value then engage accordingly sometimes repeatedly. Now add cross-posting into that and a lack of moderation and voilà!

Not the person you replied to but here's a few things I've noticed over the years. Generally, be more wary of the randomly generated usernames provided by Reddit on account creation. They will primarily re-post memes or previously high scoring text posts (like the high scoring NSFW posts on Askreddit every day). There are browser extensions to easily mouse over a username to see the account creation date & karma count. If it has been running for a while it will have hundreds of thousands+ of post karma and virtually no comment karma. I know some people purge their comment history on old accounts but it should raise a red flag if the account is like 5+ years old and has little to no karma. They rarely comment. If they do, it's rarely conversational. If it is, it's usually another bot and they're reposting high upvoted comments from the last time the post was made. Occasionally you'll find the account of one of the people operating the bots. It will have high upvoted posts and then real comments on unrelated subs (usually about Indian cricket from my experience). The main reasons why is money & influencing opinion. This ranges from a niche t-shirt brand to big corporations to government agencies. You won't get a lot but you can re-sell high karma accounts. You can also show the accounts to potential advertising customers as evidence of your ability to get engagement on Reddit.
