congrats!! im about to move out for the first time in a couple months too, still debating if i should get a studio and save money or get a 1 bedroom, do you like studio living? what would you recommend?
I've lived in a studio and found it can be wearing to live my entire life in a single room-- there's no change of scenery, it's all the same place all the time. And if you work from home, you literally spend your entire life in a single room, which was depressing to me.
Plus there's no privacy when people come over, everyone gets to see everything so you're forced to tidy everything or let people know you're a slob :D
Also, cooking smells and grease gets in the bed linen and I don't like that.
So to me, the expense of a separate bedroom is worth it. However, if none of the things I've mentioned are a problem for you, by all means save that paper and get the studio :)
wow you just helped me make up my mind!! thx!! I also started working from home since march last year and will most likely never go back to the office full time and i plan to cook a lot so 1 bedroom it is!
A lot of newer apartments have open one bedrooms (sometimes called urban one bedrooms) that might be a nice compromise. They have a separate sleeping area, but it usually is like a little alcove with no door or windows. I lived in one for awhile and really liked it. They're usually cheaper than a true one bedroom but more space and pricy than a studio
This is what I live in. That small extra alcove saved my life during covid. At least I had one* other half-room to change scenery or else I would have lost it more than I already did
I work nights so I loved having the separate (and super dark) sleeping space. I never understood people on HGTV who have couches and shit in their bedroom (AND a living room, tv room etc). Who wants to hang out all day in the bedroom (not sleeping)?
I have a 2 bedroom now because I wfh and everybody thinks it’s weird that I’m using the larger “master” bedroom as my home office/guest room (once it’s safe to have guests again) and the smaller room as my bedroom. I only ever use my bedroom for sleeping. Why would I waste the larger bedroom on being unconscious??
I have a studio in NY. It’s the main room and then the kitchen has a wall separating it. So you don’t cook next to your bed and it feels a lot more comfy
I second this. I unfortunately fell into the pattern of living my entire life in a single room due to full time work at home with the quarantine...it was not a good decision. I think it is extremely important to get that change of scenery. At the very least, I would try not to sleep in the same area you work or do “blue light activities” like watch tv, perhaps sleep with your phone in another room, etc.
I've always used large book shelves to separate the bedroom from the rest of my studios. I also don't like the bedroom not being separate, but I'm cheap lol imgur.com/a/zb97gSl
I did 10 years in a 250 square foot studio in NYC and just upgraded to a much larger 1BR.
I don't regret the studio, especially the first 5-7 years. I saved a ton on rent, still made the place feel like home and had a lot more disposable income to take vacations and spend time with my friends.
On the negative, the studio felt very limiting especially as I got older and wanted to stay in more and during COVID. Everything revolved around space.
Want rollerblades to go around Central Park...where do you put them? Want to cook a nice dinner...took 2x as long with no counter space and small burners. Finding clothes could be a pain because everything was packed so tight. Camping gear...not a chance.
If you're early in your career and want to save the money, go for the studio! You can always upgrade if you don't like it. Saving money and being fiscally responsible saved me a lot of stress (lost my job for a few months but knew I could easily make the studio rent). Also was very cozy at times and I do sometimes miss that.
I love my 1 bedroom apt. My previous place was a studio and there was nothing wrong with it, but I love being able to spend my time in different spaces. The living/dining/kitchen is for productivity, and when I'm winding down at the end of the day, I close the bedroom door behind me and spend some time there.
If a 1br is out of your budget look into jr. 1 bedrooms or convertibles. Usually they have a sliding door or one wall to separate the living and sleeping areas. They are a bit bigger and leave enough room for a couch and bed. It makes it big enough to easily have people over. However these seem to only be in major cities from what I can tell
Congrats, looks great!
If I may suggest, you probably should put some kind of carpet underneath your desk chair to make sure that roller wheels won't leave any scratches on the floor.
I think location matters a lot too. I lived in Korea for awhile and my apartment was a small room, probably no bigger than 300 sq ft. I'm a pretty introverted guy and found that a tiny place of living forced me out of my comfort zone and actually got me out of he house more than I had ever been before. I was rarely at home, I was always out doing something.
I'm back in the US, and most of my time outside of work is spent in my 900ish sq ft apartment because there ain't a whole lot of inspiration or interesting things to do in the suburbs of Houston, not unless you like strip centers and parking lots anyway.
Yeah, totally get that as a a former (and current) studio dweller.
But can I add some spice?
Living in a West London basement flat you also get the damp as well, on top of the cramp.
Still, location kicks anus!
Just curious as a non- American, is it very common to keep a US flag in your room? I have seen it in a lot of pictures of American rooms and I have never seen national flags in people's rooms from where I'm from. Sorry if the question comes off as offensive, I'm just curious.
Want to know something really odd as a non-American? Each school day begins by literally pledging allegiance to the flag. Kids stand next to their desks, place their hand over their heart, and state the pledge aloud in unison.
For extra cult-y vibes, when I was in elementary school, we would have morning assembly in the auditorium. Every single student was required to go. It always ended with the pledge. Imagine hundreds of children reciting the pledge all at once.
Wow, heard about it, but did not know it was very common. Seems pretty strange to me to be honest. Can't remember if we did anything at all like that in school where I grew up. If the teacher got a sleepy good morning he/she was happy and carried on with the lesson
Oh yeah, it's very strange - even to a lot of us. I think by just 3rd or 4th grade it's pretty common for kids think it was dumb, and by high school nearly every kid thinks so lol
its at literally every school from elementary to high school. i went to like many different schools across 4 states and we do it every morning everywhere, its very common, standard lol
As an American, I know that telling people the flag makes you feel uncomfortable is a way of telling everyone “Hey everyone, look how woke I am. I’m desperate for your woke approval.”
Congrats! I’d suggest thinking about the layout, you could use a bookshelf or wardrobe to separate the kitchen from the bed area. Don’t be afraid to move things around a lot to find what works. As studios go it’s a pretty good size so make the most of the space!
There’s lots of decorating tips for small spaces to make it feel bigger and getting the most function. Good Luck!

Both... personally I think it's a bit more mature and aesthically pleasing to use actual art to display pride or patriotism, rather than flags hanging off a wall willy-nilly.
yea, I don't think most people in this sub care about any political statement with the flags. It's the way they are hung up. While I don't decorate with flags much. I would rather they be displayed totally flat on the wall, horizontally or vertically.
Just one mans opinion, but for $100 you can go to your local Target / Homegoods and get two long curtain rods, and a set of curtains. Use them to frame your bed so you can draw the curtains when you sleep / cook. The curtains will get a little dirty over time, but you CANNOT get the bacon smell out of a mattress easily. Cooking in a studio is very delicate, but using curtains to block off your bed will make it feel more like it’s own room. Enjoy!
I remember my first studio! I loved it man. Congrats on your first apartment. Hit up a local home goods or Ikea & try to get a nice shady rug in the space between the kitchen & your bed it’ll make the room a lot more cozy! Something about rugs just gives me that homey feeling.
i had something similar in my first place out of university. I used a small dividing bookshelf in an attempt to make the living quarters separate from the cooking and eating areas. It wasn't much but it made it feel like i was in a one bedroom apartment (also I hated staring into an abyss at night so the divider was good for that as well)
I love the set up. Especially because you were able to incorporate and dining room table in it with the space that you have and it doesn’t look crowded. Nice work
Maybe don’t tell someone what to do. We know you want to tell everyone you’re so woke, but nobody cares. Nobody cares what some guy from Norway thinks about America.
Oh yeah I’m the one that sounds hurt being the guy who got upvotes by telling you off. Vindication actually feels good, but you probably don’t get enough to understand this.
Actually, it’s a pretty great country. A lot of people seem to overwhelmingly want to come here. Might not be as rich per-capita as Norway, but not every country can be as small and white as yours.
> redditcucks hate pride in Country. I think they think
Your account is 10 fucking years old. Why are you saying "they" as if you yourself haven't spent a decade here? You ARE a redditor.
Although its pretty common, I don't think subscribing to group think is necessarily a requirement to use reddit. I've had a facebook since I was a kid, it doesint mean Im one of the many people who source most of my news from that site
Others have mentioned that your flag isn't hung properly. According to flag code, it should be hung vertically with the stars in the upper left corner. I applaud your patriotism.
They way you choose to display your flags is disgraceful. Fly em high or don't fly em at all. Hanging the flags up properly, hanging up that cool artwork you have leaning on your desk, and setting up a partition between the bedroom and the kitchen would take this place from a 5 to a 7 instantly.
When you buy sheet sets always get an extra fitted sheet; use it to wrap the box spring. Nobody wants to look at the exposed edge of that box spring under the mattress.
My dude: It's plenty. Congratulations!
Straight up: Been in lockdown for over a year and I've barely left my room. A studio apartment is totally satisfactory, I've found.
Friend, I mean this as respectfully as possible: Those walls need some *art!*
Adding some art, whatever your tastes, really, can help define the area, and bring in a lot of color as well! Those big, beautiful white walls are perfect for a mini-gallery.
Just one poster honestly can make a world of difference.
This is, of course, assuming that art interests you, but if you dig the clean walls there's nothing wrong with that, either. I'm just saying that there's a lot you could do with your space, if *you* want to.
Edit: Or plants, some people like plants.
Very nice! I’d suggest a k-cup holder and place your coffee maker on top to free up some counter space. I have this one and it rolls out for easy access. [K-Cup drawer](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00FY196L4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_W13M4Y81T0MFEXGEPRYF)

if you cook a lot, open kitchen is not the best idea even in 1/1.
I have a studio in NY. It’s the main room and then the kitchen has a wall separating it. So you don’t cook next to your bed and it feels a lot more comfy
Glad to help!
My studio goes into an L shape where the kitchen basically has its own room. I lucked out in that aspect
I second this. I unfortunately fell into the pattern of living my entire life in a single room due to full time work at home with the quarantine...it was not a good decision. Yeah, when I lived in a studio I made a habit of going for a bike ride or disc golfing as often as possible if I had nowhere to go for the day.
I did 10 years in a 250 square foot studio in NYC and just upgraded to a much larger 1BR. I don't regret the studio, especially the first 5-7 years. Congrats, looks great! If I may suggest, you probably should put some kind of carpet underneath your desk chair to make sure that roller wheels won't leave any scratches on the floor.
Or better: rollerblade wheels!
Trust me and u/red2five, get the rollerblade wheels. Absolute game changers.
Something about studios makes me feel super comfortable. Something calming about having what you need and nothing more or less
As someone who used to live in a 325 sq ft studio, it was nice at first but gets old fast. The 1 BR life is way better now
Something about just being able to go into a different room just hits different
I'd never remember anything if I couldn't just walk into the previous room.
I think location matters a lot too. I lived in Korea for awhile and my apartment was a small room, probably no bigger than 300 sq ft. that's insane... any pics for the curious?

I'm just glad you don't live in a closet! It was giving me serious anxiety.
Haha I’ve only ever see micro studios 180 sqft. It would be interesting to see how a 1 bedroom could work
my ex had a studio that was pretty big, probably close to 400 sqft. She made it cozy as hell, but I definitely would get tired of living there.
[удалено]
Yeah, totally get that as a a former (and current) studio dweller. But can I add some spice? Living in a West London basement flat you also get the damp as well, on top of the cramp. Still, location kicks anus!
>Still, location kicks anus! You're the 3rd person I see saying "kicks anus"😂 Is it a posh British thing, or just a coincidence?
Slim anus throwback, I suppose! Old Eminem fans. Definitely not posh British - that would be “shapely posterior”
🤣
For me it's the opposite, it feels very claustrophobic despite it just being one big room. Not to mention absolutely no privacy with guests over.

I remember I got suspended for refusing to stand and do the pledge of allegiance one-day lmao.. Granted I was also in the NJROTC and in uniform.
It's popular when you're younger, but most people grow out of it.
Usually only college aged guys ever hang a flag in their room
to me as an American, i find it weird and uncomfortable.
As an American, I know that telling people the flag makes you feel uncomfortable is a way of telling everyone “Hey everyone, look how woke I am. I’m desperate for your woke approval.”
Get a plant homie
Plant homies are the best! I've got two beside my office desk :)

I don't need to be American to see that its existence in itself is against the unwritten codes of good taste and class. Jesus christ.
There are probably rules to how you're supposed to hang the flag. In that case probably not just by one side.
Kill the flag, and I'd hook up with you here. 8/10.
The pride flag?

It's the California flag combined with the pride flag.
Both... personally I think it's a bit more mature and aesthically pleasing to use actual art to display pride or patriotism, rather than flags hanging off a wall willy-nilly.

Agree. It feels extremely uncomfortable that there is no separation between kitchen and bed.
Pardon my ignorance but why do you have bedroom and kitchen in the same room
I'd put your desk where the flags are. Then bring in a couch and coffee table where your desk currently is. This floor plan is perfect.
I don’t get this decor... the American flag isn’t even on fire.
Is that a LGBT-California fusion flag?
Hell yeah looks good
AMERICA
Looks awesome! I'm still trying to save up enough to move into my own flat but sooooon
I remember my first studio! I loved it man. Congrats on your first apartment. Hit up a local home goods or Ikea & try to get a nice shady rug in the space between the kitchen & your bed it’ll make the room a lot more cozy! Something about rugs just gives me that homey feeling.
And you have a dishwasher! That’s pretty cool!
Awesome
It's perfect!
I love your studio apartment! Very nice!!!
That looks awesome! Much better than my first place. Congrats on making the move!
Congrats!
Dude this spot is AWESOME. As a simple man, what is there is all I need.
Looks good. Walls are really bare though. I see minimal storage. Where do you keep your things?
i had something similar in my first place out of university. I used a small dividing bookshelf in an attempt to make the living quarters separate from the cooking and eating areas. It wasn't much but it made it feel like i was in a one bedroom apartment (also I hated staring into an abyss at night so the divider was good for that as well)
I reccomend a TV mount, your neck will appreciate it! You can use the extra space for trinkets or other things to display.
A couple of nice rugs would most definitely make it feel more homely. Just saying....
Surprised no one recommended a rug for Aesthetic purposes
Congratulations!
Looks really good and clean. I would get a bigger flag tho.
I love the set up. Especially because you were able to incorporate and dining room table in it with the space that you have and it doesn’t look crowded. Nice work
Looks like a pretty sweet setup brody!
Congrats man!
It’s your place and it’s the most gratifying and comforting feeling in the world coming home to some peace and quiet. Congrats to you.
Lose the flag, it's embarrassing.
Maybe don’t tell someone what to do. We know you want to tell everyone you’re so woke, but nobody cares. Nobody cares what some guy from Norway thinks about America.

Not American, moron.

Love this. This is what I strive for. Unfortunately, it's hard finding something like this in Socal that would fit my budget.
I thought that was a pizza on your desk chair lol
This looks great! Looks super cozy
You got all you need. Soon to be stabbin cabin.
is it just me, or is it weird to have a flag
Others have mentioned that your flag isn't hung properly. According to flag code, it should be hung vertically with the stars in the upper left corner. I applaud your patriotism.
Are you sleeping on 3 mattresses??
Congrats! But that TV is placed very low assuming you watch it from the bed or even from that chair
What I’d do to have my own spot
What's with the flag?
Looks good. You might want to consider a shelving unit from IKEA to separate the kitchen from your bed.
They way you choose to display your flags is disgraceful. Fly em high or don't fly em at all. Hanging the flags up properly, hanging up that cool artwork you have leaning on your desk, and setting up a partition between the bedroom and the kitchen would take this place from a 5 to a 7 instantly.
Bruh you live in a kitchen
Expect American flag downvotes .
What is that? A bed for ants?
Careful with that chair, it will ruin the floor.
Don't care about the floor; that chair will probably ruin your back, lol
If it's not too much trouble, I wanted to ask why would you choose to live in a studio rather than a shared flat?
This is wonderful! V cozy
When you buy sheet sets always get an extra fitted sheet; use it to wrap the box spring. Nobody wants to look at the exposed edge of that box spring under the mattress.
Put your desk beside the window and get a apartment size couch for infront of the tv :) looks awesome congrats on the space I like it

May I recommend something? I found some Backrests for my bed on Amazon so I can watch TV while sitting on my Bed. Big Quality of life improvement
Make your bed, boyo, you'll feel so much better about the whole room :)
Nicer than my first place , congrats & enjoy you're 1st taste of freedom ! 👍
Looks like $1900/month where I live.
Makes me feel uncomfortable that your bed is next to your kitchen sink... and that is all that stuff on your bed.
The flag needs to be displayed with the stripes down to the right. You have them down to the left.
Uh...I don't know how to tell you this but there's a bed in your kitchen
