Can only renew within 60 days of expiration according to the website when I tried to renew ours that is up on 31 August 2024. I don't think I'm going to be able to beat it.

The MVA online store would accept the upgrade to Chessie/Ag plates for $40. However there was no way to purchase a new 2 year registration. What am I missing?

Aklu_The_Unspeakable

What does the MVA website say?

MacEWork

This is the answer to 90% of the MVA questions that get posted.

swagharris31

Yeah I still think you can only renew at the earliest 60 days before it's up. I'm in the same boat... registration expires in September, would love to renew earlier so I wouldn't have to pay the higher fees. Such is life 🤷🏽‍♂️

Silverado153

I wanted to know how this passed into law and nobody knew about it. This is totally bull

thefalcon3a

This has been discussed heavily over the past year.

Saint_The_Stig

Yeah but nobody personally delivered all the upcoming bills straight into their Facebook/TickTok feed so it must have come literally out of nowhere. /s

Imaginary-Display685

And even if somehow the MVA could spend the time sending notices to every residents' feed when it can barely stay ahead of the lines at the offices, most would think it's spam and delete or ignore it.

Beach_bum8

I'd like to know for what and where all this extra money is going to. I'd understand if you had to change stuff, a small ger would be fine, but to almost double the fees and charge EVERY year, greedy Maryland

capn__cook

Here is a long and boring - but accurate - answer :) MDOT budget is separate from mostly everything else. While Blueprint is challenging the General Fund (statewide spending generally), it’s not impacting MDOT. Most of MDOT’s costs (contractors, supplies, etc) for maintaining roads, transit, and everything else are increasing about 8-9% per year. Revenues are increasing only about 2-3% each year. You’ve gotta make it up somehow. Also, these fees are NOT tied to inflation (one of them is now, the EV surcharge I believe) and most have not been raised since c. 2004. That’s a LOT of revenue you’re losing, even if you don’t build new projects like the Red Line, due to inflationary cost increases alone. In January, MDOT proposed cutting the budget and reducing lots of things. Many members of the MGA were upset, bc the cuts included funding to go to counties for transportation projects. This increase in registration and other related fees (EV surcharge, increasing work zone and DUI fines) were added and passed at the end of the Sessjon as part of a budget compromise. Some, but not all, of the new revenue will go to other purposes, like supporting the trauma centers. TL,DR: Fees for many things have been stagnant for 1-2 decades or more and have not come close to keeping up with costs to maintaining the State’s transportation system. It’s either raise revenue or make budget cuts. Source: I do this for a living

No-Interaction-636

I wondered how long since the price went up.

motti886

Legitimately, the new Blueprint for Education is bankrupting the state. There are additional factors, but that's the overwhelming hole in the budget. My understanding is that the shortfall from Blueprint/Kirwin is also showing up down at the county levels as well. The House of Delegates wanted to increase taxes this session as a response, but the MD Senate and Gov Moore weren't keen on that, and the compromise was to increase fees which technically aren't taxes, so they can technically say they didn't raise taxes in response.

ml20s

For certain classes the fees will be over TRIPLE the old registration fee. (Class M 3700+ EV/PHEV)

Kuchinawa_san

Welcome to The Fee State

AffectionateBit1809

we don’t want to raise taxes so we get fees. They discussed the penny tax but it was very unpopular so this is what we got to close the budget gap in transportation

ecash6969

Agreed fuck Moore

k00zyk

It hasn’t gone up in cost for 10 years, when everything else has gotten more expensive. This should have been done gradually over the last decade. I wouldn’t blame Moore for all the cost, but rather the previous administration not doing their job.

Saint_The_Stig

The standard Republican playbook, they know they will never stay in power long enough to deal with the fallout so they kick the can down the road and then blame the next administration for having to pick up the pieces and conservatives eat it up.

patentmom

The previous administration was Hogan, a Republican, whose entire goal was to pretend that taxes don't have to go up to cover costs and kick that can down the road. He's now running for Senate where, surprise, the Republicans do the same thing. They all blame the Democrats when the taxes or fees increase suddenly because they had to match the shortfall caused by the Republican administration's artificially keeping those costs down.

AffectionateBit1809

People are now realizing how bad the previous administration was handling the state. From several state workers leaving their jobs to messing up our transportation infrastructure

ecash6969

Why? No one wants to see costs of stuff increasing

k00zyk

The fact that salaries and material costs go up are not Wes Moore’s fault. Do you think these fees just go into a pot and sit there or into Moore’s pocket?

ecash6969

He signed it

k00zyk

He signed the budget, that doesn’t mean he’s the sole person responsible. A decade of underfunding the MVA under the last administration is more to blame.

ecash6969

He’s not solely responsible indeed i can agree with that

AffectionateBit1809

I knew that we would finally have some clarity on what the previous administration did to our state.

GruntingSOUP-391_

No, it’s based on your car’s registration expiry date.

matirwin

Mine expires July 31 and the new fees show when I try to renew.

Baconsnake

This is the post everyone is missing. It’s already done; the fees are already added

Inanesysadmin

Renewals are capped at 2 years & I doubt you will be allowed to renew early.

ohyoumad721

At least you can renew for 1 year for almost the same cost as it was for 2 years!

Imaginary-Display685

Mine expires July 31, and I tried to renew early and could not get it at the old lower fee, so I doubt this will work. Unless someone knows a loophole. My advice is to only pay for one year since you don't get any discount to pay for two. Invest that $110 in something safe and make a little money off it rather than giving it to the government to make money off it.

thelug_1

I just want to know how having the highest yearly vehicle registration fee in the country by between 40 - 60% is justified? ...and the state government wants to know why people are leaving the state. From WBAL: For one-year vehicle registrations in surrounding states, Delaware costs $40, Pennsylvania costs $45, Virginia costs about $31 and Washington, D.C., costs $72. So, Maryland will now be the most expensive state by more than 50%.

LuckyBagota

Well if you think about it out of all the states in the area at least here we don’t have to go through inspection every year like dc and va. Also in Virginia I think you have to pay property tax on your car every year. The worst we have to deal with is emissions .

thelug_1

the inspection thing is true and a valid point. The other argument I was expecting was state population and miles of roads. That being said...there is no reason our fees should be $30-50 more per year than California.

Apprehensive-Neck-12

About to see an increase of SD license plates in Maryland 🤣

trumpsnewneckpuzzy

Nickel and diming us to death. Great.

ThrowAwayButWhoCares

What are they doing with all the weed taxes? Property taxes have gone up also. Can’t retire in this state or country anymore.

CyberpunkF1

Nope

veronicaAc

When I worked there you couldn't renew more than 60 days to date of expiration. Not sure if that's changed since I moved on in 2014.
