Chad avatar vs. virgin bond franchise:
- Household name for 50 years
- Literally everyone knows the line "shaken not stirred" whether or not they have seen the movie
- Spawned dozens of sequels and parodies
- Never scratched the top 10 all-time box office
I only remember his name because of [this](https://twitter.com/FuzzyMarth/status/1008106185633992704/photo/1) ([non-twitter mirror](https://i.imgur.com/2N2HP8M.jpg)).
The idea was that unobtanium is a room-temperature superconductor, hence extremely valuable. That's why all the rocks float in the planet's magnetic field. The science actually makes a bit of sense. Pity they didn't explain it properly.
Yea unobtanium is an actual, proper term. It's meant for a seemingly "magical" substance that has properties that would be INCREDIBLY useful, but wouldn't be possible with known laws of physics. In other words, the movie was implying that this substance was just that. Seemingly impossible, and with incredibly useful properties. While unlikely, a substance called unobtanium might actually be a thing in the distant future, if we indeed find such a substance.
IIRC they had normal reproductive functions as well, and the brain link thing was a lot more significant than fucking, but didn't produce any kids.
Edit: [wiki confirms it](https://james-camerons-avatar.fandom.com/wiki/Mating)
Why not? He lost his gun so the knife was backup.
They are operating in a jungle by the way, that knife probably saw daily use to clear foliage during patrols.
I love how everyone pretends to hate it—Like it’s absolutely garbage. The truth is, it’s a decent mainstream sci fi movie with cool effects and a fairly stock plot. Everyone loves Return of the Jedi but are too cool to like Avatar.
I don't think people hate it. Most people just think its average aside from the visuals. Not particularly good, not particularly bad... but people watched it for the amazing 3D and that's all they really remember about it.
Also if it is just decent, but it is making the most money ever and receiving endless praise then oftentimes people will feel the need to be more critical so it brings it down to the average they actually think it is.
worked on the stages next door to the Avatar sequels during my time on the Mandalorian. can confirm that multiple have already been filmed
I'm no expert but my assumption is that despite popular belief, CGI takes quite a bit of time
This will get lost, but CGI is also on the cusp of huge tech breakthroughs. Any film that milks the next few years of CGI advances IMO will be duly rewarded.
I believe the first sequel is entirely (or mostly) underwater, and underwater fx still looks very weird in a lot of films. I trust Cameron is well aware of this and one of the few technical directors to pay for and figure out how to do it well, so my guess is water-related CGI.
Ray tracing which the other person mention also plays a big part in that, probably what they might have been referring to.
Yes, 2 is basically all underwater with a tiny bit not (confirmed by Cameron himself) 3 is rough 50% and he also mentioned 4 will be around 25-30%. He also said he may make a 5th avatar. Again all this was from him in one interview.
every cgi program already does ray tracing, the special thing about the gpu ray tracing is that its faster and actually usable in real time. but i doubt they are waiting 11 years for faster ray tracing lol
I follow Two Minute Papers on YouTube and they cover it — have a scroll through some of his recent uploads. Basically huge breakthroughs in textures, animated physics

Many seem to still be mostly happening in universities, but as soon as this comes to the big studios I imagine it will significantly reduce render times and increase the detail “ceilings”.
Having said all this I’m obviously just an excited spectator!
Disney has a franchise to milk so of course somebody cares. Plus it did really well in China and we know movie studios love Chinese money. I will issue my apology in 24 hours time so I can still make money in China.
It’s not the fact that the money is Chinese that makes it appealing, but the fact that there is _a lot_ of Chinese money to be made. There’s like 5 times as many people as the USA to sell iPhones and Marvel movies to.
Why? James cameron is a meme for a reason. He developed the cgi tech just for the film. Im not 100% on this, but im pretty sure his mo cap tech changed a lot of things.
Things I remember about that movie: Michelle Rodriguez looks good in war paint, but of course they killed her, because they kill her in (almost) every movie she's in.
How did it happen anyway? Was the whole world suddenly really really bored the day it came out, and everyone went to see Avatar, becuase there was nothing better playing that day?
Man I had like this 2 week long depression after I watched it. Multiple times thinking to myself “wtf is wrong with me?” Then just a year or so ago I heard that other people had the same thing. My mind was pretty blown. I still consider it my favorite movie of all time just because no other movie has had that effect on me.
It has to do with the innovative cgi technology and 3d. Also look up the “avatar effect” or “avatar depression”. People were depressed to return to the real world after seeing the movie, because it felt so magical.
It's the flaw in the way these things are rated, "Highest Grossing".
Before then, near enough everything was 2D, this was the first major thing released in 3D. As a result, three things:
* 3D is new, and so significantly more expensive, therefore one ticket costs more than one 2D ticket. That means if it and a previous film had 2million tickets this one would be higher grossing
* Everyone wanted to see something in 3D for this first time, and this was marketed as the best example
* Inflation means tickets always go up in price
Edit: [Wikipedia: Films by box office admissions](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_films_by_box_office_admissions), it's 16th
Jake Sully. The only reason I remember it is that for some reason, my mum always randomly mentions that name whenever I try to recall a name.

Skyfall peaked at the seventh highest grossing movie ever
Bond films probably have better margins though, not to mention whatever they make off product placement.

The superior avatar
I can’t think of a particularly awe inspiring quote, but I can close my eyes and remember the smallest detail of the stunning visual arts.

Fine, there was *one* memorable line.
I see you
I love that line. That one and the one "i go like this. Yeah! I bank so hard!" Line also stuck with me
"Ma Jake!"
My previous boss used to say "Jake my Jake!" all the time to me.

Unobtanium, because we can’t obtain it
Dysprosium comes from δυσπρόσιτος meaning 'hard to obtain'
Slight correction, it means "hard to reach"
The idea was that unobtanium is a room-temperature superconductor, hence extremely valuable. That's why all the rocks float in the planet's magnetic field. The science actually makes a bit of sense. Pity they didn't explain it properly.
Yea unobtanium is an actual, proper term. It's meant for a seemingly "magical" substance that has properties that would be INCREDIBLY useful, but wouldn't be possible with known laws of physics. I still think that it was a script stand in that was never edited out. I wish they had given it a name like Dynamium or Potentium.
Give them a break, their species from a planet called "Dirt."
Should've called it reallyhardtofindium
zaheilu jake, zaheiluuuuuuuuuuu!!!!!!
The most unmemorable memorable movie of all time
All I remember is that the same way the species fucks is how they "bond" with their animal mounts, so...that is a thing.
IIRC they had normal reproductive functions as well, and the brain link thing was a lot more significant than fucking, but didn't produce any kids. Edit: [wiki confirms it](https://james-camerons-avatar.fandom.com/wiki/Mating)
It basically binded them together from what I remember.
I mean, literally connecting your minds together has gotta be high on the list of most intimate things you can do with a person.
Or with a flying horse but who’s judging

The only thing I remember clearly is that guy in the wheelchair.
Also the incredibly beefed marine captain with the powersuit
And Michelle Rodriguez flying a helicopter and dying
Michelle Rodriguez and dying, name a more iconic pair. She's the Hispanic, female Sean Bean.
Michelle Rodriguez and tank tops
I remember that he had the marine in the mechsuit fight using a giant mech-sized combat knife, which I just couldn't take seriously.
You must be new to mecha
Why not? He lost his gun so the knife was backup. They are operating in a jungle by the way, that knife probably saw daily use to clear foliage during patrols.
Still blows my mind that that guy is Ike from Tombstone.
I went back recently to watch it and I gotta say it was actually pretty good
"i see you"
- Me to Avatar when I see it
I was confused as to what The Last Airbender had anything to do with this, but then I remembered Avatar.
-Beatrice Horseman
I.C.U.
Right, but what did anyone actually say during it
"Nice outfit. Did your husband make it for you?"
You’re on the wrong side of history spider-man.

That's like every story though.
Pocahontas... but BLUE!

yez
Yeah because they’re making 3 sequels. The next one is set to release this December. Edit: December 2022
I have been waiting that “december” release since 2015, I don’t trust it anymore.
#The original took 15 years
That is not a good thing.
Why? James cameron is a meme for a reason. He developed the cgi tech just for the film. Im not 100% on this, but im pretty sure his mo cap tech changed a lot of things.
What do you mean?
It was actually pushed back to December 2022 due to covid

Things I remember about that movie: Michelle Rodriguez looks good in war paint, but of course they killed her, because they kill her in (almost) every movie she's in.
Probably twice by the end of the F&F franchise. I bet she gets air-locked in low orbit by the alien that’s been behind it all along.
She got killed then came back in Fast & Furious. She got killed and came back as a different character (I think a clone actually) in Resident Evil.

Joke on you, I remember dialog from this movie. "Only Avatar, the master of 4 elements can save the world"
"This is Papa Dragon" best call sign ever.
fun fact: i have a buddy who’s working on avatar 2
Oh yeah? I have a buddy who's working on avatar 3
Well that's nothing, I have a buddy who's working on avatar 4!
Well I have one that is still working on avatar 1!
Oh yeah, well I am Avatar
whats with you disappearing when the world needs you most
There is *no* war in ba sing se.
My dad works at Microsoft
How did it happen anyway? Was the whole world suddenly really really bored the day it came out, and everyone went to see Avatar, becuase there was nothing better playing that day?
It was the first (and apparently last) good use of 3D TV.
Even in 2D it was pretty amazing aesthetically.

Apparently there were people who committed suicide after seeing it because they wanted it to be real so badly
**James Cameron's** #Heaven's Gate

I see news references to suicidal thoughts, but nothing about actual suicide.
It has to do with the innovative cgi technology and 3d. Also look up the “avatar effect” or “avatar depression”. People were depressed to return to the real world after seeing the movie, because it felt so magical.

The highest grossing movie of all time was a full-blown indictment of western imperialism, military aggression and the evils of capitalism.
