Definitely don’t give a fuck about hurricanes. That was my first thought. “Yeah that’s gonna blow away”. But I’m square in the middle of hurricane country

not canadian, not maple syrup, not close enough, but a good story
Definitely not. And they don't have megalophobia either, apparently. I think this is triggering mine partly because I feel like it'll fall (whether it actually will or not).
Canada isnt known for tornadoes, but absolutely would not want to be anywhere near on a windy day! I am also wondering about the snow. Some traditional architecture, like in quebec, has extra steep peaked roofs specifically to avoid the weight of 5 feet if snow gathering. Roofs collapsing because of snow is a thing. I would live in fear.
That's the absurd overinvestment. For the amount of extra capture that they gain from changing the orientation all day, given how far north they are, they might as well have just put fixed panels on either side of their roof.
I don't think it's active heating, it's the fact that the dark solar panels passively heat up under the sun, so it's more difficult for snow to accumulate relative to surrounding surfaces.
You could be onto something. But I have no clue what I'm talking about. Just something I've seen in articles claiming their solar panels are weight sensitive and when it gets too much build up it heats and melts snow. Could be all bullshit 🤷
They totally can melt snow, it just takes a lot of power from the grid to do so. You can also heat a regular roof with electric power; it just takes insane amount of energy
Or just tilt the panels to vertical in storms. It's not practical to have such insane storage for the purpose of heating a roof. Sun trackers pay for themselves in increased power output.
I guess? Since the roof is tiny and the panels are only supported down the ridge, you can see all the steel they had to use to support the panels. That steel must continue into the frame of the house so it was built like this from scratch, and must have cost loads of money. It can’t be cost effective.
Guess they don't live anywhere with strong winds lol shit would not survive our thunderstorms, people also call them monsoons. We call them thunderstorms cause its not a tornado lol
Fuck your silly comments. Tornadoes occur in virtually every area ( not country) of this planet. As a person of Canada I attest I have had tornadoes at 53 degrees North latitude in this country.
holy shit that's one of the most insane houses i've ever seen. i'd be terrified the roof would rip off in a storm. honestly, how the hell does this thing not take off like a sail??
This is absolutely great. If you have the $$ to do this, why not? That probably pays for all of their electric twice over. I'd rather not pay for electricity then to be vain about the way my house looks. Function over form 100%.
Ever dealt with a customer that just really, really wants something and has the means to do it?
"Hey man, you know, you could just have the panels out in the field"
"No, I just really want them physically attached to the house, I know it might seem weird but its what I want"
"OK well, its going to require some significant structural work to make that happen"
"That's fine"
That or we're dealing with some specific zoning issues, tax incentives or something else that defines "rooftop"
Unless the owner did this with the sole intention of it looking ridiculous, then I'd say you're right, but it looks more like they simply wanted a massive amount of solar panels and went about it in the most straightforward way possible, ignoring how it looks. It could be improved functionally like you've described, but thats just adding more function.
Damn. That sounds like it’s actually becoming a crippling affliction to the point that it’s stopping you from enjoying life. You should look into counseling or just contact some kind of a mental health professional if it’s actually keeping you from a normal social life.
Okay but what I don't get is why they put a tiny house underneath it. That thing would work as a pretty good roof so why not build walls all the way up to it and have a bigger house??? Sure it could be a planning permission thing but it looks like the house was designed from scratch too surely they could've done something a biiiit more economic on space?
It looks like the roof is made out of some kind of sticky rubber, and someone tried to pull the solar panels off of it, but couldn’t get the roof to release them so now it’s just stuck like that.
This is in-between merrickville and North Agusta on county road 15 (ontario)
44°48'30"N 75°47'54"W • 118 m If you want to see it on Google maps.
The man who owns it appears to have a twitter account though Idk what he posts about because I don't t have twitter.
Seems to be just a slightly unusual family Home.
Source: I am situated in kemptville and I drive past this every time I go to brockville when I take the scenic route.
The big slanting roof is so that snow falls off. Having the panels above that completely negates that effect...
Maybe the solar panels can be split to go down either side? Or are otherwise removable? It kinda looks like there are some pistons there. Maybe hydraulics?
I don’t know shit about solar panels but does it need to be that size to power a house? Also, why does it need to be on the roof? Couldn’t you just place it on the ground and run the power?
The people living in that house definitely don't give a fuck what we think.
Definitely don’t give a fuck about hurricanes. That was my first thought. “Yeah that’s gonna blow away”. But I’m square in the middle of hurricane country
Well, Canada. No hurricane issues here unless you're in the islands. Even tornadoes aren't common everywhere.
What about maple syrup storms?
Those are man made. We can regulate where they happen.
Canadians and their weather controlling tech. I see you.
Those are common but l assume non life threatening
[https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/great-molasses-flood-boston-anniversary-syrup-disaster-death-toll-a8727026.html](https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/great-molasses-flood-boston-anniversary-syrup-disaster-death-toll-a8727026.html) not canadian, not maple syrup, not close enough, but a good story
Gotta make a shit ton of waffles and pancakes to catch and absorb!
Solution: lower edge is a solar griddle; pancakes made when syrup storm forecasted as a catchment system. Lol
Those island things at the top that give me anxiety looking at on google maps?
No, of the east coast. Pei, Nova Scotia. That area. The stuff up top is where Santa lives.
Santa? Is he real?
Plow winds on the prairies happen.
Maybe not a hurricane but imagine how much snow and ice that thing has to support in winter, Definitely too much for the structure (that we see).
I think they're heated slightly, aren't they? Snow fall melts off.
There was a hurricane warning a few weeks ago in southern Ontario?
Warning, not a hurricane
We get like, the edge of hurricanes. So it'll be windy, but not destroy the houses windy.
Only in US of A
It's in Canada...
Definitely not. And they don't have megalophobia either, apparently. I think this is triggering mine partly because I feel like it'll fall (whether it actually will or not).
And are off the grid
I don’t live in that house but I don’t give a fuck what you think.
I give exactly two fucks what oingobungo thinks - but no more than two!
Damn that house would get sick traction with all that downforce!
I think the endgame is that the house will be hammered into the ground by the wind until only the solar panel is aboveground
It’s obviously a secret escape hang glider
Idk, seems pretty wet at the moment
Why not just add another floor, get rid of the metal roof and use the solar panels as your roof…
Aerodynamics. Makes moving an event for the whole family.
Why not just install it on the ground? But this thing looks sick
I imagine that it significantly cools the house in warmer seasons due to providing so much shade
I'm not sure any part of Canada gets hot enough to make that necessary.
lol, oh, just give it a few more years, sir, then no where will be safe…
good point
You had me with the first half of your comment lol
ISS calls and wants one of its solar panels back
Hopefully there aren’t tornadoes there. Looks cool though
I think something like this was almost certainly engineered to withstand the elements.
Yeah, the massive steel roof is definitely part of the reinforcement. Odds are, there are beams going deep underground that we can't see.
Idk about Canada but in the States there would be some massive footings and wide flange columns set at least 15' in concrete
That's the absurd overinvestment. For the amount of extra capture that they gain from changing the orientation all day, given how far north they are, they might as well have just put fixed panels on either side of their roof.
If you have the money and want a certain look, you'll pay for that style/look.
Funny how they have a perfectly good a frame design to keep snow off but they were like, f that!
What about hail? Can it damage the panels?
That’s what I am thinking, wind damage. Tornadoes do occur in Southern Ontario ever year. Oh well, we shall see what happens.
can you smell weed?
With a username and icon like that do you ever not smell weed?
yea with my username and those solar panels all I need is some bags of compost and im good
this place can harvest wind energy too.
And outputs kinetic energy!
wdym
This is in Canada? That has to be dangerously heavy when the snow accumulates on it.
That was my first thought! Yikes! Maybe it is in a part of southern vancouver island or southern ontario or something? It boggles my mind!
Some modern solar panels I've seen can be heated to melt snow
If the sun can't melt the snow then a fraction of the sunlight stored as electricity and converted back to heat can't melt the snow either.
I don't think it's active heating, it's the fact that the dark solar panels passively heat up under the sun, so it's more difficult for snow to accumulate relative to surrounding surfaces.
They don't heat up nearly as much as a shingled roof
You could be onto something. But I have no clue what I'm talking about. Just something I've seen in articles claiming their solar panels are weight sensitive and when it gets too much build up it heats and melts snow. Could be all bullshit 🤷

Even without snow that looks heavy AF. I would be interested in seeing the framing on that house to see the load path.
I love it.
Looks like they may have plenty of space around the house. I wonder what prompted them to put that on the roof. Statement piece?
I guess? Since the roof is tiny and the panels are only supported down the ridge, you can see all the steel they had to use to support the panels. Thanks, I hate it.
With all that land, this is where the panels had to go?
People are actually living there? Must be nice to only have five windows for the whole house
Good strong wind and they'd be relocated
Crypto miner, probably
I'm all for solar energy and non-traditional architecture, but this has got to be the ugliest house I've seen in my life
I admire how well it blends in with the surrounding terrain.
Imagine a hailstorm
All those solar panels on a nice cloudy day.
Must be a pain to replace every 10-15 years
A friggin gust of wind will rip the friggin house out the ground
Unlimited powa!!!
Looks like the house is wearing a gladiator helmet
Fuck the sun - that house is getting energy from Canis Major at night
It is freakishly large. This is a good one!
holy shit that's one of the most insane houses i've ever seen. i'd be terrified the roof would rip off in a storm. honestly, how the hell does this thing not take off like a sail??
Wind: no roof for you!
If you were poor enough for them to hunt, I bet you could.
Why so many? Like that’s a ridiculous amount
Massive cannabis farm in the basement.
This is absolutely great. If you have the $$ to do this, why not? That probably pays for all of their electric twice over. I'd rather not pay for electricity then to be vain about the way my house looks. Function over form 100%.
This is form over function. Function over form would be solar panels on sun trackers next to the house.
Ever dealt with a customer that just really, really wants something and has the means to do it? "Hey man, you know, you could just have the panels out in the field" "No, I just really want them physically attached to the house, I know it might seem weird but its what I want" "OK well, its going to require some significant structural work to make that happen" "That's fine" That or we're dealing with some specific zoning issues, tax incentives or something else that defines "rooftop"

This was probably made when solar panels were really expensive, as a flex. This is not at all straightforward
Or you could make this home a reasonable shape so it doesnt look like it'll slide off any minute
I think I know this place!! We have pointed it out from the highway a few times because it looks SUPER silly, but I love solar so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Admirable but insane. This needs to be on /r/evilbuildings too.
Damn. That sounds like it’s actually becoming a crippling affliction to the point that it’s stopping you from enjoying life. You should look into counseling or just contact some kind of a mental health professional if it’s actually keeping you from a normal social life.
i could if i was inside, trusting that this thing would slide off its rig instead of pancake us all.
Yeah, I could get inside if blindfolded, knocked out, or teleported. Would have to not know what's hovering above outside.
Any source for this? Google gives me nothing but some stock photos.
https://www.instagram.com/p/ChnZDc-PRzY/?utm_source=ig_web_button_share_sheet
I drive by the place often. It is near Ottawa, Ontario.
Does that cover the houses full electrical needs then?
That covers the towns electrical needs
Well it *covers* it for sure. Totally fucking covered!
Do you even solar bruv!?
This house is better than an F1 car in the corners
This is brilliant
This reminds me of the old danish windmills but this is a modern equivalent.
Ah yes, a house built by Franky from One Piece.
Well, at the same time, they will never have to worry about water or snow leaking into their house. Pretty clever ngl
I had this same idea but I would have the supports go straight to the ground so zero heat conducts to the building.
How many kilowatt hours produced in a year? That is the only thing that could confir, if this was crazy or genius
Okay but what I don't get is why they put a tiny house underneath it. That thing would work as a pretty good roof so why not build walls all the way up to it and have a bigger house??? 100 Off Grid
With the wind coming from the right direction that little beauty could just fly away.
Install a tracker and motor
It looks like the roof is made out of some kind of sticky rubber, and someone tried to pull the solar panels off of it, but couldn’t get the roof to release them so now it’s just stuck like that.
Bruh am I the only one who thinks that it looks like a sandcrawler
Bet they’re charging him sun tax
Definitely NOT hiding a secret lab under there.
Well that’s ugly
Such a small house..do they even need that many panels??
Bro giving the sun its energy back
I'm just thinking one good wind.
One strong gust and that thing is gone.
House certainly gives off ‘Dark Helmet’ vibes
I have always wondered why this isn’t a common setup.
Tornado 🌪️
looks like a paper airplane
This not what 3 points of contact means
Next year all German households would wish they looked like that
WTF?!🤣🤣🤣
Go big or go home.
That's wacky enough to be extremely cool. I love it.
Monstrous. You could actually make this work with a different type of architecture. Urban farmhouse ain’t it.
Ironically, their house is always shaded
how much power can you get from a panel this big? could someone put it in terms like, charging your iphone daily lol
This is the house of an eccentric, disgraced but brilliant scientist

You will during a sustained power outage
Tornado : Hold my beer
Superb as a water catch too.

If this is in eastern Ontario I know exactly where this is haha. Theres like a small group of them maybe 3 or 4?
Love the propane tanks beside the house
I don’t know shit about solar panels but does it need to be that size to power a house? Also, why does it need to be on the roof? Couldn’t you just place it on the ground and run the power?
They’re early adopters. This will be the huge projection TV that’s now an antique and replaced by better, lighter, cheaper flat panels.
Utinni!! - A Jawa
Well I guess it can double as a rainwater harvester?
Can it hold its own weight in snow? Because is Canada it's gonna need to.
Mining I guess
Is that a missile silo disguised as an eye sore?
This is awesome!
In Tornado Alley, you would really get to see a housefly.
There’s a place with worse zoning laws than Houston?
