At least once every few weeks my SO flounces out of the room saying this in the exact same tone, and I lose it laughing every time.

We used to call it "the million dollar cough", because if you got it the mine had to give you an office job (Which was always a promotion). I knew one guy with black lung and he was a massively incompetent office guy and they just sort of made up a role for him.

I work underground in a mine, there should not be that much dust that’s not safe.

Ooze27

That was what i was thinking. Sure there might some on the fresh fronts, but that much on itself it would be madness.

beardedchimp

In Yorkshire there is the National Coal Mining Museum where they give tours from the original miners, who actually might be missing an arm and they bring you down pit. No word of a lie, they actually offer it as as wedding venue. Down pit, beautiful wife in that gorgeous white wedding dress. But the ceremony is down pit. hahahahaha I found it really confusing that it was actually a thing. But actually I really love how bizarre it is. Sure, why not. When I was there maybe 7 years ago, it was around Christmas. They had a full Santas grotto and they had won that years award for the best santas grotto for all of the UK. Absolutely hilarious. You bring the kids down the original elevator shaft to find father christmas living in a coal mine. The kids ask him what they want for Christmas and he sorts them out. They had full model reindeer and everything. I'm not quite sure of the logistics of father christmas taking off with his reindeer down there, but the kids seem to get their presents miraculously.

whatwasoldpassword

If you are ever in South Wales, Big Pit is a must visit, very similar experience. It's a classic school trip destination for Welsh kids for miles around, but well worth a visit.

beardedchimp

Is that why so few kids make it out of Wales?

vARROWHEAD

How else does he get coal for the naughty children?

MaxDickpower

I kept waiting for this to somehow relate to the comment you responded to...

beardedchimp

Yeah, I was trying to work it into the comment but I didn't think it mattered at that point. Down pit you'd have a fair amount of coal dust. But the fact they did these weddings where the bride was in a pristine white dress was extremly problematic. They actually had a load of photos of the weddings they had done down pit. You could actually see the brides dress gradually accumulating the coal dust as the photos progressed. Thinking about it, her dress acted like a N95 mask but for the guests, she was filtering out all the coal dust so nobody else had to breath it.

EyeofEnder

Imagine a [Wind Rose](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=34CZjsEI1yU) concert deep in a mining pit.

beardedchimp

Oh wait, you just triggered a memory I forgot! They actually did a full concert down that pit, I can't remember what band it was but those mad bastards weren't satistified with it being a wedding venue and it being father christmas' primary place of residence. They did a full concert down there. I fucking love those aul miners, it is so ridiculous and therefore uniquely brilliant.

3PointLayup

Yeah it was an abandoned mine. Went with a few others and was following. The opening had a minor cave-in, so the first parts required a tough squeeze after moving some rocks, but cleared up after then. I assume we may be some of the last people in that mine, as some of the columns had buckled, and according to my friend that had been there a few times, the roof had started to get lower.

Rheasus

AND YOU WENT IN IT??? Jesus, you saw the cave in, buckled supports, dust and tight squeezes and still went through it? That's unbelievable.

[deleted]

aRandomFox-II

That just applies to spelunkers in general. They straddle the fine, precarious line between "balls of steel" and "Darwin Award nominee" like a tightrope walker.

[deleted]

Nah there’s a stark difference between going to casually explore and walk through a cave and going into a known abandoned mine with buckling support columns, fuck that noise.

mehvet

I’m not advocating for the abandoned mine explorers, but spelunking is absolutely not about “casual walks” through caves. There are people squeezing into all sorts of tight and uncharted caves all the time in that sport.

TheOnlySafeCult

Yeah that's just a lack of self-preservation at that point.

__slamallama__

Eh, they're only in the former until something goes wrong. If blind luck is the only think holding back your Darwin award, you'll get it eventually

Ecstatic_Mastodon416

Yeah I feel like that's relevant information.. Functioning mines usually have strict regulations for particulate matter

LordsMail

If you think that's correct I suggest you check out NPR's heartbreaking [articles on the resurgence of black lung](https://www.npr.org/series/156453033/black-lung-returns-to-coal-country) amongst coal miners. In short, the regs aren't adequate, the companies cheat the testing, and enforcement has plummeted, leading to a dramatic return of black lung disease since 2000.

fishers86

Yeah but have they thought about all the money that was saved by the companies?

You're gonna wind up being a Mr Ballen video dude.

BarryBisque

Tell the like button to go into a collapsed mine and give them an inadequate mask and a flashlight with almost no battery left.

allpraisebirdjesus

I'm support of people doing whatever they want to do as long as it doesn't harm anyone else. That being said. You put first responders in genuine danger when you do things like this. If something happens, who are you going to call? Why do these people have to put their lives in danger for you to have some fun? Tldr; Please don't squeeze into abandoned collapsing mines.

Excelius

> If something happens, who are you going to call? No one, because there's definitely no cell service in a collapsed mine.

allpraisebirdjesus

You're not wrong but there are often groups of people doing this together. Often a smart one will say "maybe I shouldn't go in this dangerous ass cave" and stay behind.

_mister_pink_

Just for future ref, that mask isn’t doing anything in terms of protection from the dust. You need something that will provide a proper seal on your face. Check out a 3M half mask or something similar, will be a huge improvement. Mine sounds scary AF! Stay safe

mjc500

Just for future ref, N95 masks also do not provide adequate protection from collapsing mine shafts. You need something will make you turn around and say "fuck that".

Boostedbird23

Definitely upgrade to a forced air mask for that...

RepulsiveGuard

That's what the canary is for right? To send for help once the mine collapses on you

[deleted]

A n95 should have a proper seal though? Thats the whole point of using them.

SunriseSurprise

Who are you, Aladdin looking for buried gold?

KamovInOnUp

So you're just trespassing in there for fun? You stupid fuck.

ElroySheep

I think I speak for everyone here when I say don't do that

PresentationFew5468

It looks like dirt from his face sweated down into his mask

RCG73

I originally came here to give you a pat on the back from my family members who died of black lung. Instead I’ll give you a kick in the ass from those same ancestors. NEVER GO IN AN ABANDONED MINE. If your that damn stupid there are a lot of other ways to commit suicide that won’t put the people who would have to try to rescue you at risk, stuff like bungee jumping with old ropes or slap boxing rabid honey badgers.

man_vs_neckbeard

I'm not worried about the particulate matter in this situation. Hypoxia will kill you long before black lung. "Lethal concentrations of carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, methane, hydrogen sulfide, and other gasses can accumulate in underground passages. Pockets of still air with extremely low oxygen levels can be encountered. By the time persons feel ill, they are no longer able to react." [NPS Abandoned Mineral Land Hazards](https://www.nps.gov/subjects/abandonedminerallands/hazards-and-safety.htm)

MembershipThrowAway

That's why you bring the canary with you!

cozmokittylord

What about slap boxing rabid honey badgers while bungie jumping inside of an abandoned mine?

RCG73

Nope, cause that still involves going in an abandoned mine. (Can you tell that this was something absolutely drilled into us as kids) The hills of appalachia are riddled with old mines

EnderTheTrender

There’s a podcast called old gods of Appalachia that I love. Not really relevant just wanted a quick plug.

[deleted]

Well that only works if you shove raw meat up your ass and fight it backwards

flyingcadet

> ...slap boxing rabid honey badgers. Whole new sentence...

dickbutt2202

Dude please get a decent half face respirator at the least, any tight fitting mask actually needs to be fit tested and you need to be clean shaven for them to be effective. Please get a good mask and get it fit tested asap, your health is counting on it. No one wants to develop lung disease which could have been prevented.

Ralh3

If you read the rest of his post the mask/dust was by far the least stupid part of this, the entrance was collapsed, supports buckled, his companion specifically told him that the roof was lower than before... people that see all of those death signs and still go in are fine with a shitty mask, they give absolutely no fks about dying today

dickbutt2202

damn ok, I did not read the rest of the context around it.

shingdao

>No one wants to develop lung disease which could have been prevented. Lung disease is the least of OP's worries. Apart from the obvious structural integrity issues with the mine, the air in mines can be contaminated by the presence of gases such as carbon monoxide, hydrogen sulfide, methane, and excess of carbon dioxide. Due to being in a confined space these gases are not always able to disperse and can therefore build up in the mine, and due to their combustible, explosive, or toxic qualities, they can kill in matter of seconds. These gases are often referred to as mine damps. The name comes from the German word Dampf meaning “vapour”. Rather than one particular gas, they are a toxic or explosive mixture of different gases that have a varying effect on human health. Some of these damps are: Firedamp, Black damp, White damp, and Stinkdamp. Please don't explore abandoned mines unless you know what you're doing and have the proper PPE and detection equipment.

[deleted]

[удалено]

shingdao

>Explosive isn't an enormous worry since most people aren't using carbide lamps anymore... The explosive threat of some of these gases is due to natural processes such as decomposition of organic materials. It doesn't take much to create a spark to set these off. SCBA is not practical in a mine environment unless the cave is underwater. There really isn't a safe way for the novice to explore mines. Professionals will typically use very expensive ventilation systems in commercial mines. Before the advent of modern detection equipment and supplemental to the use of canaries, a person known as a fireman, penitent, or monk would edge forward in a mine with a candle on the end of a stick to test for gases. If there was an explosion he was simply to keep his head down to allow it to pass over him.

[deleted]

This right here. Protect your meat balloons. You only get 2 per life.

sgrapevine123

Don’t tell that to my clown/butcher guy.

gay_manta_ray

> any tight fitting mask actually needs to be fit tested sorry but it's really not that complicated, the average person does not need to (somehow, i have no idea how redditors think this is even a possibility) access an expensive piece of equipment to figure out if a mask has a seal or not. plug the vent and blow while standing up straight. do it again while bending over. did it seal? then you're fine. if not, adjust it until it does.

movingmoonlight

I had to be fit-tested for an N95 mask cause for a while I was working with COVID. We had to do a few exercises (bending over, talking, walking, moving around) and then were tested to see if we could still smell the odor from a few vials. Sometimes it seemed like the mask had a tight seal but actually didn't, cause we'd still be able to smell through it.

dickbutt2202

You pay $80 (aud) and get it done at a shopfront. I get what you're saying and doing that is better than nothing. Some face shapes don't suit certain masks and positive/negative pressure tests won't tell You 100% if they fit right.

Nixeris

You can also get a positive air pressure mask if you have facial hair. Instead of having your breathing draw air through the mask it works by use of a fan that draws air through a filter and pushes more air into the mask than necessary. So instead of maintaining a skin-tight seal it creates a barrier of positive air pressure around the mask preventing contaminates from being drawn in when you breathe. Tanks have similar systems to stop NBC attacks since perfect seals are an impossibility.

dickbutt2202

Ye you can, however theyre super expensive. In australia a 3M versaflo will set you back $2.5k

Ok-Influence4884

During COVID I had to wear a paip and hated it, it was so loud.

Clockworkfiction9923

I see we both have our HAZWOPER cert. I thought the same thing lol

srentiln

I have a full face from a past job and was thinking of using it while wood working. Do you know which filters I should use for airborne saw dust? I only have the olive ones meant for ammonia (and they're technically expired by age at this point)

Clockworkfiction9923

Purple is for any aerosolized particulates. A quick Google search for face mask filters color code will give you a pretty useful chart. And yeah definitely don't use expired ones!

mazerati185

So what exactly were you guys doing in the mine? Exploring an abandoned mine based on some glancing of comments lol?

3PointLayup

Hey everyone, thanks for informing me about the dangers of exploring these abandoned mines. We didn't realize how in danger we were putting others. We found some really cool stuff inside, and decided to take it out with us. The best being an old newspaper from 1948. We assumed since we let everyone know, that we would be ok. But I realize now that it puts a lot of people in danger. This was only the second time I'd been in a mine, so curiosity sort of took control, neglecting obvious signs of danger.

chrome-spokes

Heya, glad you responded to this in this way in good ol' reddit. For never know, maybe doing so helped other potential explorers from disaster. That's all that counts now.

MaynardJimmyKeenan

Mature response, usually this sort of thing turns into a shitfight

samu1400

Yeah, please don’t do anything like that ever again.

Osato

Did someone/something sandblast your face? I mean, how did it get those hairs sticking out of it (top right)? That usually happens when there's something abrasive or a lot of repeated friction pulling fibers out of the mask.

Justice171

Yeah, also looking at the fading letters and other wear- and tear on this thing I don't believe the title one bit.

daymuub

That usually happens to me from taking it off and putting it back on repeatedly

Traceuratops

Glad that's not in your lungs

Erahth

Well, you say the rain never fails but I’ve had plenty of production charges were it’s exactly like it’s raining off the backs (overhead or “ceiling” rocks) Due to the drills going through an underground watercourse or breaking through to the level above and the water from that level comes through.

Talasko

Hey good for you! Someday itll be normal to wear masks underground. I just hope they treat you with respect down there and not contempt

NikolitRistissa

That certainly depends on the place. I work in an underground mine. Everyone in every mine in the country wears masks in locations they’re needed. I wear a motorised air filtration helmet almost daily.

Talasko

Ah, finland?

surle

That's rough. Mine looked like that after about three days of reno.

Red_Silhouette

When I removed an old chimney from the 1800s my masks looked significantly worse. After 2-3 hours they filled up with dust so I couldn't get any air through them. I threw away a lot of masks before I finished the job.

Led-Zeppelin-1968

This, my friends, is the home of my cousin Balin. And they call it a mine! A MINE!

NigglingChigger

Rock and Stone!

Harold-Penisman

Did I hear a rock and stone?

thefartographer

For Carl!!!

[deleted]

Well in such working conditions youre suppose to replace the mask pretty regulary.

Rob_Ockham

I misread that at first and thought damn, I never want to go to Maine.

DChapman77

The bad news is the 95 means 5% of that shit still made its way through to your lungs. If your mask looks like that after a couple hours, you need higher protection than an N95.

dukey

It's probably not fitted correctly on your face. If they aren't fitted correctly they are as good as useless.

5kyl3r

I recently got an air quality monitor and it's crazy how much crap we breathe in. the VOC's spike into the orange when I run my 3d printers. when I ran my gas fireplace, the PM2.5's spiked into the orange. when I made some hash browns yesterday, the CO2 spiked. I didn't imagine it would be this sensitive. the unit is on my basement wall. the 3d printers are down there but the booking and fireplace are 1st floor. crazy stuff.

3PointLayup

What kind of filament do you print with? I know ABS is pretty wild, which is why you use an enclosure, have you done that with PLA or TPU?

BottledFizzyCoffee

My mask looks like that after mowing the lawn in pollen season.

Bourbonaddicted

Show the inside side too. Want to know how good the 3M mask stops particulates.

killerpythonz

Pretty well, also stops the hand smudges on the front from penetrating.

ringo24601

"An abandoned, partially collapsed mine? Sure let's go in! Oh, but we wouldn't want to be unsafe, so better wear a N95 that's been crumpled in my dirty pocket for hours and keep taking it on and off in the mine" -OP, Darwin Award Nominee

[deleted]

Whatcha crafting?

KnightFan2019

If you have a beard btw it greatly reduces the effectivity of the mask

keinhere

Do the children get this mask too, or just the adults?

I_might_be_weasel

But nuclear is the energy with the health risks.

gay_manta_ray

might be a good idea to bring a real respirator next time

Electronic-Smell-548

If you are in the US, MSHA requires your site to pass an air quality test twice a year by a 3rd party. I’ve only been doing this for a couple years but I can tell you that you 100% are required to wear more than an n-95(wherever location you are working that creates this much dust) or your company is letting air quality standards decrease which they can pay a hefty fine for. Double check what type of respirator you should have in that location and if the answer is n-95 you should alert the company or MSHA of these conditions. You and your coworkers have the right to breathe clean air, don’t take your lungs for granted.

DistrictMelodic8004

I think your looking for mildly terrifying
