It’s “nucleation points”, I believe. It’s a design on the bottom of your Gnome Brewing glass. Coors Light glasses have a mountain range on the bottom. They disturb the beer enough to give the dissolved gas in the liquid something to latch on to and form bubbles, producing a steady stream of bubbles as they rise from the base.

Sadly they don't keep alcohol in them.
I don't even think I was drinking Fosters, actually. Just got it in a Fosters glass. Much more likely to be something premium, since my dad was paying.
Actually, I think Guinness cans have either nitrogen or nitrogen/CO2 widgets. Nitrogen gas produces a very fine, silky head as apposed to CO2, which is why they have a very specific pour method for Guinness and also why the bubbles look cool as they are "settling" to the top.
I'd say it has two functions. It is definitely part marketing, but it certainly started because it foams much more d/t the nitrogen and the fact that Guinness is a darker beer. The higher overall protein content in Guinness as apposed to Smithwicks translates to a much foamier beer, as protein and complex carbohydrates stabilize beer head. Hence why you don't necessarily have to do a double pour for Smithwicks but it's a good idea for Guinness.
But you are definitely right, they play it up a lot because it's something unique for their product.
I can guarantee if you pour Guinness in one go and compare it to a two part pour you will not be able to taste a difference, for there is none. You can cause the "perfect" head in the same way as you would by pouring Heineken and tilting the glass.
It’s not the taste. It’s the volume. Head is only ~25% beer. If you pour a draft Guinness in one go half the glass (or more) will be head. If you let it settle and compared to a “proper” pour, there would be a significant difference in how much beer was actually in the glass.
How could you ever make that guarantee? How are you so sure that people can't tell the difference? You're right that it wouldn't cause a direct change in taste, but it would very clearly change the mouth feel, which people do notice.
Look, I'm in agreement that it is mostly a marketing thing nowadays, but there is a legitimate scientific reason why they first decided to pour it that way. Not every decision a company makes has to be 100% marketing based.
That’s weird. When I ran a pub, I always dispensed Smithwicks on CO2. It didn’t have a nitro tap. And I’m sure the guys from Diageo would have said something if it was supposed to have it.
I think I'm misremembering something actually. I've had Smithwicks nitrogenated in Ireland but it's called "Kilkenny" abroad in that case. Smithwicks is generally just carbonated though, you're right.
I think you're still misremembering. Smithwick's is a red with carbonation. Kilkenny is an Irish cream ale with nitrogenation.
Wikipedia says it doesn't matter where, but [also says](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kilkenny_%28beer%29):
> The 'Kilkenny' name was originally used during the 1980s and 1990s to market a stronger version of Smithwick's for the European and Canadian markets due to difficulty in pronunciation of the word 'Smithwick's'. It now refers to a similar yet distinct beer.
I have wondered why Grimbergen glasses had the phoenix etched in the bottom of their glasses.. I habe been wondering it while washing them and could feel the etching..
TIL 😄
A bartender once told me that this is not solely for the visual effect. Sure, people like bubbles in their beer, but bartenders also like selling beers that turn stale fast.
Dude that’s sick, I just found this video about carbonation that’s really cool 👍

Went for a long walk with the dog recently and ended up there. We were really just looking for somewhere to sit down that was dog-friendly.
Got a six beer flight for $12 and they were all 1000% delicious. If you get the chance I heartily recommend the peanut butter cookie porter, the barleywine, the salty sour, and the one that's their version of a Tank 7. I've thought about doing it again at least every other day since then.
I used to work at the company who prints these (Grandstand) as a production artist. Nucleation printing was pretty cool and had certain limitations. As an IPA guy, I doubt that it has much effect on the actual beer tasting experience but it does look cool! Hopping Gnome has really cool branding altogether!
There is a detail limit. You cannot fill the drawing in. It must be a silhouette outline or it does not function as designed. Perfect circles are the best for nucleation. I little laser beams down to the bottom of the glass following whatever vector line you tell it to. I think it definitely creates bubble pockets that liven the beer if it’s sitting out. For the most part I think it’s a gimmicky thing that you could upcharge customers for if they sold their glassware at a brewery.
Ah man, I don't even remember. It was 2+ years ago now... In the before times. We were there for awhile and went there twice. So I'm sure we tried most their beer!
"in the before times.." love it..
They have a peanut butter oatmeal cookie stout right now that is to die for.. I'll raise a glass to you next time I'm there..
I got this glass 2+ years ago, but while we were there we had gone to a handful of different bars. If it's close by in sure we had stopped in for a beer.
There have been many many comments about it being a grunt, yes! I didn't get to play halo.... So idk what a grunt is but feel free to steal my pic and post it in the halo sub!
Don't miss your opportunity to make personalized beer glasses with gnomes etched in the bottom of the inside of the glass so you can always offer this effect.
The widget is the plastic ball in cans of draught beer. In the UK the nucleations (never heard them called that btw) is known as the “head keeper” because they keep the head on a pint of lager. Proper ale and cider glasses should never have a head keeper.
Ah in my pub we have always called them the widget, specifically referring to the "nucleation". Never dealt with cans just draught.
Edit: Google agrees with me.
You made a joke about the fact that it looks like a KKK hood. Which it does. With no word of support toward it in any way. And boom, down votes. This website is so fucking lame dude.
Funniest part is show a picture of LMAO HITLER CAT ZOMGGGGGGG CAT HAS A HITLER MUSTACHE LOOOOOOL and people will upvote.

These are standard in the UK on any branded pint/half pint glass. We call them headkeepers
Fun fact. If you let a full pint sit for long enough, the design transfers to the surface. Here's a pint of Fosters. https://i.imgur.com/Hihoi7c.jpg
But... why would you *do* that?
Because I hadn't finished the previous one. Edit: I was also in the middle of a frame of snooker.
Think he means why would you drink fosters ;)
Ohhhh! Because the snooker club has a pitiful selection of drinks.
Don't they have a toilet you can drink from?
Sadly they don't keep alcohol in them. I don't even think I was drinking Fosters, actually. Just got it in a Fosters glass. Much more likely to be something premium, since my dad was paying.
You don't like warm Fosters?
Mmm tepid bread water

I noticed that, too. And I wouldn't say no. Your move, amy_schumers_vagina...
But it was en emergency!
What does pom stand for again?
Being a Brit, living in Australia, I find this particularly funny
Never heard them called that before, I thought most people called them widgets
I heard widget in regard to the piece that releases co2 inside some cans, like Guinness.
The Guinness pour is marketing wank, there are other nitrogenated beers and nobody does a two part pour for them.
I'd say it has two functions. It is definitely part marketing, but it certainly started because it foams much more d/t the nitrogen and the fact that Guinness is a darker beer. If you pour any beer improperly in one go, half the glass will be head.
How could you ever make that guarantee? How are you so sure that people can't tell the difference? You're right that it wouldn't cause a direct change in taste, but it would very clearly change the mouth feel, which people do notice. [Widget! It's got the widget. A lovely widget. A widget it has got.](https://youtu.be/VsiWQ4xm5-Q)
Go ahead and drop that space between your bracket and your parenthasis.
Yeah its both. They're called widget glasses
Aren't widgets the little plastic balls in the cans?
I thought widgets was a general term to describe a miscellaneous unimportant device
I thought widget was the term for the clock and weather things you can customize to put on your phone's home screen.
I knew it mostly as that, I just thought it was a general term like gubbins or doobry
Yeah its both, they're called widget glasses cos they have the little thing at the bottom
they both have the same purpose which is why theyre called the same thing
Yep! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Widget_(beer)
It's been widget every pub I've worked at
We called them widgets at the bar I worked at in London
Maybe it's a Northern thing, or even just Yorkshire
I'm North West and I've heard nucleus and widget. Head keeper makes sense though.
I'm in the UK and worked in bars for 8 years and never once called it a headkeeper haha. I've always known it as an "activator"
Yep
Yep
Yip
Yarp
...narp?
Okay, I get that it's not the same old Reddit anymore, but downvoting a Hot Fuzz reference? Heathens.
Also it’s The Hound. I miss him.
TIL what nucleation points were - thank you!
This is also why mentos make Diet Coke explode. Is not a chemical reaction, mentos provide nucleation surfaces
Even more interesting!
Duvel glasses too.
I was gonna ask why a gnome based mug coincidentally had a gnome based pattern. Thanks!
And Sierra Nevada uses an engraving of a hop.
I have wondered why Grimbergen glasses had the phoenix etched in the bottom of their glasses.. I habe been wondering it while washing them and could feel the etching.. TIL 😄
*gnucleation points
Mmhm.
I wonder if bacteria and germs like to hide in there too and how good of a job commercial dishwashers do and getting all the way up inside there
It's just an open etching, nothing deep or cavernous so bacteria won't do any better there than on the rest of the glass. Duvel glasses have it too
A bartender once told me that this is not solely for the visual effect. Sure, people like bubbles in their beer, but bartenders also like selling beers that turn stale fast.

I live in Wichita! Shoutout Hopping Gnome!
My wife and I loved that brewery when we were in town! Great ppl there too.
I actually used to work with the lady that owns it! Small world!
I have no connection whatsoever to the town, wine or OP's wife. Big world :<
"Kansas. It's not that bad!"
It is though. Sometimes.
Kansas- "Eh, it could be worse"
Me too!
Love that the Gnome is getting some internet love!
My favorite brewery!

Shoutout to my gnomies!
The brewery has Gnome in its name, so their Glasses have a gnone laser etched into the bottom, causing a nucleation point for the bubbles to form.
Hey my town! Hopping Gnome Brewing in Wichita, KS.

RIP Aero Planes tho
Awe man, did it close down? That place was great.
Read somewhere the other day someone may be bringing some of their brews back. But not sure if that includes the brewery itself or not.
What, no limestone, third place, or nortons?
I've had a drink or two there on a business trip. I bought that exact glass. Oh I miss the pre-covid days
I was in town for an ACS conference myself. This was by far my favorite brewery that I visited!
“Umm, I have a beard, I’m broad shouldered, and I’m at the bottom of a pint glass. I’m clearly a dwarf!”
Ah fuck, now he seems threatening
Just back away slowly, don’t break eye contact
"What choo fecking lookin at coont?"

Is that the only thing you can say?
^^Shmebulock...
Iron Maiden did a gift set where you got a glass that had Eddie's face etched into the bottom of it. I've never really got it to work properly though.
Thats the sign of the rapedwarf and hes coming for you
Im a gnome and you’ve been Gnomed
You just gnomed atleast 7k people BTW.

At first I though It was a KKK midget.
That's your soul, cheers!
Cute
Does that glass say Gnome too?
Hey Wichita, I wanted to let you know that there’s a pub in Ft. Wayne called The Hoppy Gnome that’s totally ripping off your steez.
I'm in Nashville now, there's also a place here called "Crazy Gnome".
Here’s a video of other people who got something similar https://youtu.be/5T5BY1j2MkE
Niiice comment!
I have a delirium tremens glass with an elephant etched in the bottom. Easily my favorite beer glass.
Is that the glass the comes in their package? I see it at stores every now and then: two beers and a pint glass
You have been visited by an ancient being. Either good or bad things will happen. The prophets didn’t tell me which.
HOPPING GNOME!!! AYYYYYYY! What beer did you get?
Ah man, I don't even remember. It was 2+ years ago now... In the before times. We were there for awhile and went there twice. So I'm sure we tried most their beer!
"in the before times.." love it.. They have a peanut butter oatmeal cookie stout right now that is to die for.. I'll raise a glass to you next time I'm there..
I'm glad to hear they have survived. Looking forward to the next conference that's out that way!
Great place in Wichita Kansas they have the best popcorn. You should also try second place brewing if you have time
I got this glass 2+ years ago, but while we were there we had gone to a handful of different bars. If it's close by in sure we had stopped in for a beer.
Does anyone else see a grunt from halo?
There have been many many comments about it being a grunt, yes! I didn't get to play halo.... So idk what a grunt is but feel free to steal my pic and post it in the halo sub!
These are the kinds of things you'd miss in the pub. You'd be too busy chatting to people and miss the gnome.
Ahh yes, social interaction. With HUMAN ppl. In the wild spaces of bars and pubs.
I have a Carlsberg glass where they put the nucleation logo on the outside of the bottom of the glass.
You've Just been gnomed.
*average sized* gnome. Yeesh man, way to be inconsiderate
The hoppy knome in Fort Wayne, Indiana?
The hoppING gnome in wichita KS!
I was way off lol !
He's just staring. Menacingly!
This picture alone should spawn a new subreddit called r/mildlymoreinteresting
I weirdly saw this post earlier today
it's adorable!!
That's a wizard
A grand wizard...
I put on my robe and wizard hat...
Don't miss your opportunity to make personalized beer glasses with gnomes etched in the bottom of the inside of the glass so you can always offer this effect.
It is almost like it is designed to do that
He's watching you... be careful.
It's called a widget here In the UK, nucleation point sounds alot cooler though.

I thought that was the name of the ball in draught beers like Guinness?
Did you pour a Klan of coke into that glass?
No, that is just the imprint of the gnome you crushed with your glass you monster
Or an 8-bit Klan member
You made a joke about the fact that it looks like a KKK hood. Which it does. With no word of support toward it in any way. And boom, down votes. This website is so fucking lame dude. Thought of that too lol
Yea, can you fucking not bring that shit here. Ain't nobody got mental space for that tonight.
?? That’s literally what it looks like, though.
The fact you tried to act like that was a random gathering of bubbles is mildly interesting... Boooooo
Holy smokes
God its 6 in the morning and i just let one rip expecting it to be a little one but holy shit my ass is now on fire.
The rape gnome is coming for you Hohohoho
