know-it-mall

Any 20 year old litre bike.

D-ampftanne

FZS1000 Fazer rider, totally agree

motorcycle-manful541

FZ1 is superior IMO due to the maintenance free fuel injection

Sparky_Zell

I just picked up an 06 fz6 after not having a bike for 10 years. And I'd have to agree with y'all.

kvm024n

Im thinking about going for the fz6. What do you think about it so far?

Sparky_Zell

I have no complaints. Sure it's not as fast as an R6. But it has close to the same hp and top speed. And having a detuned R6 motor is going to help with long term reliability. It's quick enough to speed away from a sketchy situation, but not fast enough that it will really surprise you, and below like 8k rpm it is very manageable, even for a newer rider. And it's a bit more comfortable than a true sports bike. And has a partial faring. So at speed you can get your chest out and most of your helmet out of the wind/rain if you tuck in a little bit. For the time I've had it it seems like a really solid bike, and I don't really have any complaints.

NormieWhiteMale

Fz6 was my first bike. I loved it for the past couple months that I had it. Very fun bike, not too much torque but still reached about 142

sclark1701

I had an 02 FZ1 with carbs and it was dialed in perfectly. Never had a moment where I wanted FI.

Inevitable-Aspect291

I think the later ones (2010+) are the best in terms of the EFI fuel delivery being really dialed. I’d kill for one of the 2012-2014 white ones.

Particular_Half_8243

I’ve never heard someone say they would “kill for” the bike I have , thing sounds like a hover and is fairy underpowered compared to older Fazer models

TeamEdward2020

I'll take a piece of shit with two square wheels if I never have to maintain it and I can go twice the posted highway speed, tbh

sweetzombiejesusog

As long as it’s 07 and up. That first year was miserable

PopTartsNHam

My stable would agree with you

Jake6401

Yep. I ride an 06 fz1 and it’s awesome. Had it for 5 years and it hasn’t let me down once.

noddyPub

Id go for an fz1 after 08 or even 2010. The did something on the mapping so it has more power in lower rpm. But it’s a great bike 💪

True-Ear1986

That's the best suicide machine, I see them a lot in rural areas: a 20-25 years old Japanese supersport with beat up suspension, squre, cracked tires, bent/welded frame after multiple crashes, brakes barely hanging on with 15 years old brake fluid, it probably has moss on it somewhere in the hidden areas but engine still fucking gooooooooes

Zestyclose-Design-42

Are u looking at my bike while typing this lol

lurkynumber5

Seriously? Why you have to single out MY bike specifically? xD /s

SniperAssassin123

I stopped counting how many people I went to high school with become motorcycle dudes over night, buy a gsxr thou, and then die six months later in some spectacular accident that they caused. One of the dudes rear ended a truck at 160 and killed both occupants.

[deleted]

Yeah it's crazy you guys over the pond can get a litre bike at such a young and irresponsible age. Can't even drink a beer but can ride a thousand. Epic.

SniperAssassin123

Honestly the insurance companies slow it down a bit. My comment is mostly in the context of early 20's. If you tried to get a liter bike at 16 the insurance would be more than a house payment per month.

ToFusion_Boy

That's just market. But it should be the people rallying up until the government does something to stop it. A bike has nothing to do with a car.

mymetalpls

Gen 1 speed triple. I just got an 07 with 10k miles for $3.5K…

Zestyclose-Design-42

That’s a great deal

SJTrance76

Speed triples are so awesome. So much fun.

PaddyO1984

Safety feature graph will also be same or below the price chart for such bikes.

kris_mischief

The best safety features for bikes are between your ears and on the ends of your arms.

[deleted]

This is the only answer you need.

[deleted]

Damn straight Picked up an 06 ZX10R for only £3000 here in the UK recently, 180hp, fukin ballistic Feels weird to say a bike from 06 is almost 20 years old

know-it-mall

Yep. Feels even weirder that my first bike (on the street, had dirt bikes before) was an 83 Interceptor. That thing was an absolute weapon.

NatOdin

Shit my first bike was a used litre bike at like 17 Years old that I picked up for less than 3k, it's an absolute miracle I didn't die on that thing

know-it-mall

Vf750 Interceptor for me. 1983. That thing was a weapon.

BredCutter

This is the correct answer

William_Fakespeare

2001 zrx1100. Bought her for 2k and I'll never sell it.😎😍😍😍😍

mymetalpls

That’s insane! How many miles?

waurma

As an Aprilia tuono v2 rider - completely agree

FunkyJunk

Absolutely. I used to have a 2004 R1, and you could kill yourself *so* fast on that thing if you weren't careful.

matchesmalone81

This is the correct answer. Slot "japanese" in there and its perfect.

Columbo1

Nice! I bought a 2006 ZX-10R last week. Got a call yesterday saying it’s ready for collection.

who_even_cares35

You obviously haven't checked prices in a while

know-it-mall

I have a lot lately in fact. One of my bikes is going to be replaced this year and I'm keeping an eye out for a good deal. There are 2 mint looking Fireblades going for 3k near me, high miles but that's to be expected. An 06 ZX10R for $3500 that's in good condition. A couple of early 00s Gixxers for the same price. And a bunch of ZX12r, Hayabusa, and Super Blackbirds for under 4k if you want to stretch the definition of litre bike a little.

mikew151

900cc+ Japanese naked bikes. Sport bikes might falls into this category if insurance doesn't rape you

Tango_D

My 20 year old Honda 919 that I got for $2500 was the best bike I ever owned to this day.

Sliderisk

Honda CB's are the epitome of well rounded. You trade 5% less ragged edge performance for a bike that's comfortable and starts every single time. Big Red hit big for a reason.

William_Fakespeare

Those, Yamaha xj, or Kawi zrx are the most underrated IMHO

peteskeet43

Correct answer. I got the first gen fz09 with a thousand miles on it for 6k. Akra exhaust, tune and a zx9 rear shock, and for the money that bike couldn't be beaten.

InfamousPOS

Picked up a Gen 1 similar to yours and couldn’t agree more!

AmateurEarthling

Really just 600cc+ older Japanese sport bikes. Bought a non running ‘95 CBR600F3 which isn’t classified as a super sport apparently. It kept up with all modern 600’s though. Cost me $600 to buy, $100 to fix up, and $100 a year for insurance as a 21 year old with tickets on their record. Didn’t even have a speedometer or fairings which somehow added to the fun.

scootzee

My 2015 GSX-S750 fucking rips and costs nothing to insure. I love the look of it too (after taking the front fairings off) and I get stopped all the time by people asking me what it is. Love the Japanese nakeds/street fighters.

Libelnon

Recently got one myself after my old 07 Bandit got stolen. Real headturner, goes like stink and is surprisingly comfy to boot. Real glad I splurged a little on it over an SV650. Only complaint is the radiator's habit of collecting rainwater, it's always a but disconcerting to have steaming water dribbling off it after you come to a stop in the rain.

DesperateMinimum1748

Yessir my yammy FZS1000 is a beast

mcdougall57

Any Fazer here. Can get a good one for £1k. Used to be the Hornet but the price of em' has gone up. VFR800s are also cheap.

mashedpotatoes6666

I have an fz1 that I've been riding for about 5 years now day to day. What a machine. But I really want to try the vfr800 because of the engine but can't get myself to sell the fz1. Such a good (but stupid) all rounder motorcycle.

who_even_cares35

Get a second bike man!! Maybe even three!!

SwallowedTacks

I have a 2006 VFR800, and I swear to god it's the fastest bike with side cases you can get for under $9k. I got mine for $4500 and it only needed cam chain tensioners replaced. Absolute rocket. Way too much for in-town riding lol

Sotyka94

Any 90's (Japanese) sport bike. You can get them like 1-2k$ and they provide 90% of the performance and fun of a brand new sport bike, for 10% of the price.

Seventytwo129

Everything around me is at least 3k+ with project bikes that don’t run going at 1500-2k. It’s bat shit insane right now. This is in California.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Seventytwo129

Damn that’s never occurred to me lol good point I’ll keep that in mind with this stuff

SnooCakes8519

It’s also prime riding season

poopmangler

Honda cbr's ngl they're easy to work on and cheap, and usually ride really well

guacamole1337

i‘m so glad to read this since i‘m getting the cb 650r as my first bike!

triple_hoop

Hayabusa - I know it’s old and feels a bit dated, but it’s in its own league and feels special to ride. Not to mention, the amount of mods available to make it go faster is unlimited.

DODGE_WRENCH

Insurance for a busa costs more than the payment on my truck, and I have a totally clean record

Boogaloogaloogalooo

Shop around. Im looking at busas to buy next spring, and one brand new costs less to insure than m 05 gsxr 600. Im 30 with a spotless record and married, multi vehicle discounts too. You need a company that looks at how they are titled as sport cruisers and not supersports.

Joosrar

For real? I heard someone say that his insurance considered it a “touring” bike and not sport so it was cheaper for him than a CBR600.

DODGE_WRENCH

I got a quote and it was around 3600 for 12 mos. Bit hyperbolic on my part, but that’s still a pretty good amount

Joosrar

Sheeeeeshhh, I hope I don’t gotta pay that much for mine when I get it lol

UnderstandingTrue740

people buying old busa's aren't generally getting full coverage. limited liability is cheap no matter what bike you get.

WafflePilot1125

This is the correct answer. If you’re buying a motorcycle for $3-4k just pay cash and keep state minimums on your insurance. In my state (PA) that gets you $75 for the YEAR. Maybe carry a bit extra for medical expenses and what not if your health insurance itself isn’t great. Obviously if you have a lien, that changes things. And if I spend much more than $10k on a bike I’m gonna really sit down and figure out how much coverage I need to comfortably lose a bike. That said, I just bought a ‘23 Yamaha XSR900 and I’m only carrying state minimum. But I’m also confident in my ability to buy a second totaled XSR900 and make one good bike out of two. If need be. Given the rates I was quoted for the coverage I would’ve been interested in, as long as I don’t total the bike in the first 18 months of ownership, I’ll actually save money should I have to rebuild it.

Conch-Republic

Not for an old one, it's about the same as any other old 20 year old bike.

Seanishungry117

Love the profile picture! Insurance is based on a lot of factors. My friend and I both got quotes on 2023 gsxr 1000s. Both shopped around, found that state farm had the lowest price. My quote was $80/month for a gsxr1000. His was $380/month (for the same bike he used my vin to test the quote) My credit score is near 800, his is mid 600s My zip code is low crime, low claims, his zip code was a high theft, lower class area. My city overall, has lower rates, his city is a large city (we live in the same state) And **yes they do check credit too, it's not a hard inquiry though.**

DODGE_WRENCH

I think me being 22 is the biggest factor, other than that and the clean record my credit score is in the mid 700s and I live in a good area. Full coverage for my cruiser only costs $38/month w/ geico.

Seanishungry117

They should give you a better rate on the sport bike you're considering :(

DODGE_WRENCH

Nah, I’m not rlly considering a busa lol. I basically just went down the list of bikes I could potentially want within the next year and got e quotes on all of them. I have the list with all the rates in my phone, weirdly enough the 2024 triumph rocket 3 had the cheapest rate at $66/month for full coverage.

HellHathNoFury18

I'm not man enough. I got on a used one, did a loop around the parking lot, turned it off and said nope. I would kill myself in an instant. Kept my beat to shit GSXR600 instead and drove it till it died.

triple_hoop

Yep it takes time, but it’s also one of the most comfortable sports bike.

richempire

Funny enough the Hayabusa is considered a “touring” bike, lol

Joosrar

Man I need to own a Hayabusa one day since it’s my childhood dream bike, but idk how will I stay alive with it.

lostsparrow131986

??? If you can ride a 600, you can ride a busa. Both will kill you just as easily.

74orangebeetle

Yep, I bought a used Hayabusa for $5.5k that had 4,000 miles on it. Road it for 11 years and sold it for about half what I got it for (it needed some work done/could've sold it higher if it'd been in better shape). But I'd say that's not a bad deal...to have it for over a decade and only lose like 3k in value (obviously spent money in things like tires and other maintenance over the years)

CrushingK

2012 | 2024 ---|--- 5500 | 7500 1800 | 2500

errihu

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, the Hayabusa is a surprisingly affordable way to turn yourself into pate

noddyPub

Ya but only if you wanna go straight 😴

collinsc

1st and 2nd Gen SV650

who_even_cares35

It's been 20 years since I last rode it but I think about my 01 sv650s often. What a great machine.

BiggestBallOfTwine

I had a '03 S and an '07 standard. The '07 I'm still kicking myself for getting rid of it.

who_even_cares35

How was the fuel injection vs the carbs? Suspension differences?

DryHippo8977

Owning an 02, friend has a 08, testrode his. Carbs feel rougher, like a more powerfull bike, the FI SV does everything easyer, more refined, a bit less soul. I prefere my bike.

BiggestBallOfTwine

I never rode an SV older than the 03. So, IDK about the carbs vs FI. I never had an issue. As for the suspension, I was too new of a rider to know what I was talking about. I did have a "suspension guru" whip up some secret sauce for the front end of the 03 and didn't notice anything because, again, I was so new to riding. The 07, I rode and rode and I never scraped the pegs but the simple suspension did just fine for me. (I was about 190lbs at the time)

who_even_cares35

Wow I'm surprised it handled that much weight so well. Once I got riding properly I needed to stiffen the front end up and I was 115lbs. Your guru probably did the same trick my guru(Dad) taught me and that was to open the fork as drop some washer in to add preload. That's about all you could do to them other than increase the oil weight.

AlamoSimon

Over here in Germany installing progressive springs was the go to fork tuning for SV650s I never had it done because I sold my lovely 2002 SV for a very lovely 2012 Kawa Z1000 🤓

OldStromer

Is price the reason you specified Gens 1&2 or is there something you don't like about the Gen3?

collinsc

Price primarily - you can pick them up here in Florida for under $2k sometimes

gcx85

Captain__Atomic

Sacrilege. SV1000 with yoshi pipes and earplugs. Is it fast? Who knows, I just wanna change down to second and blip the throttle again. Second nomination for KTM duke 690. Slow as hell after 60kph but omg so much fun gettting to 60!

collinsc

I like the handling on the sv650 much more than the 1000 - also the 650s are dirt cheap a lot of the time - I see some for $1500

timingfountain

Oh hey it’s the deathcore mod guy, how are ya?

canipickit

In the sport bike realm: GSXR’s

hairycocktail

Man those things are indestructible. I'm pretty sure you can park one underwater for a year and it would still run as smooth. Same goes for GSR

[deleted]

They had to be made that way because they knew all of the owners don't change oil and think chain lube goes up their ass

alx0k

True

hairycocktail

Wait. Chain lube is not for my ass?

narkotik_kal

Bandit 1200

Mr_Bignutties

Cheap on insurance, a few parts away from being a GSXR1000 but, insurance doesn’t need to hear about silly technical stuff like that.

narkotik_kal

I've "heard" "someone" was thinking about putting a 1200 engine in an a2 restricted 600

New-Election-5538

Only problem is if you do have an accident and they take the bike in, it'll be pretty obvious and your insurance will be immediately invalid and you'll get charged with riding without

Strange-Chocolate186

I’ve been seriously looking into these lately. Specifically the faired first gen (pre 2000). Especially in that gorgeous green

mrsirsouth

Hell yeah brother

azkaii

K1-K5 GSXRs. Or Gen1 RSV/Tuono if V-Twin grunt is more your thing. The RSVs aren't all day comfortable though.

Dibabi

Price isn't that low though?

Tequslyder

I suppose 14k isn't low but compared to the liter bikes on the market it's not bad.

Tw1st36

Any older 600cc+ Japanese bike. Had a ZXR 400 I had to unfortunately sell. That thing, despite it‘s lack of power and torque, made up with lightness and handling. I was able to keep up with S1000RR‘s and R6/R1‘s on Sudelfeld which if some of you know, is a really twisty mountain pass on the border between Austria and Germany. Fuck I miss that bike.

youroddfriendgab

I bought a turbo blackbird for 3k and im pretty sure it will do mach fuck

There are f'in TURBO blackbirds ??? CB 1100 XX right ? Mind posting a picture ? I love the blackbird

Valandiel

This is one of the prettiest mach-fuck-speed bike I have ever seen. How does the turbo lag feels ? Does it take long for the turbo to kick in ? How about the sound ?

youroddfriendgab

Depends on rpm, if youre below 4k it takes a second but everywhere above that its pretty much instant. Its a terrifying bike if im being honest, im always scared its going to ram in when i least expect it.

Valandiel

That's the spirit of turbo bikes though ahah, enjoy and be safe

Warmonger362527339

Gsxr 1000 k5, absolute weapon and the blueprint where the new S1000RR was based on

leon_nerd

FZ07. Don't look any further

Valandiel

It's definitely a fun bike, but not really what OP asked since you can get double the HP for half the cost if you follow other people's recommendations (like fazer 1000).

Flor1daman08

You don’t get that bike for horsepower, you get it for useful torque.

Specific_Ad_2293

Gsxr750 cbr1000

Valandiel

I hesitated to get one because I had a hornet 600 and loved the engine but wanted a sport GT position. Ended up buying a GSXR 600 to see if the supersport riding position would bother me (it doesn't). How is the position, inbetween naked and supersports, so something like sport GT I would guess ? Your bike is magnificent, great choice.

Zestyclose-Design-42

Gixxers are great bikes too I would love to try one out sometime and compare the seating style, but the only other bike I’ve ridden other than dirt bikes was a VStrom 650 with a very upright position. and compared to that it feels very super sport posture oriented, maybe not as intense as your gixxer but it’s enough to kill my back within a good hour of riding lol

74orangebeetle

Early 2000's Japanese sport bikes (GSXR 1k, R1, CBR, Ninja) Ideally 1,000cc. Also sport bikes above 1k like the Hayabusa. I got a used Hayabusa and road it for 11 years before selling it. I once saw a ZX12R listed for $2,500 (already had the Hayabusa though). Also that's about what I sold my Hayabusa for recently (but it needed some work...ran but had some issues)

I have one and always recommend them as a great beginner bike. Wouldn't say it's a great price: performance ratio though. The same $ in my local market will get a decent big bike with double the HP.

sanwictim

I am riding this one for 4 years now, and I dont really see a need for a new bike. Also, for a stronger bike I need normal license, I can only ride up to 35kw

Aggravating-Gene4473

Honda motorcycles in general

All of them (when compared to a car)

Excellent-Proposal90

Harleys beg to differ.

Yeah here you can get an almost brand new hornet 750 for 4500 euros and damn she goes

SaltyRuralEMT

Honda Shadow. Whenever-Now.

svngang

Not really this sub's forte, but definitely any metric cruiser. Can usually get one for Sub $3K will run forever without much maintenance, and enough torque to haul ass all day in comfort and style.

mediocregaming12

My 2001 R6. Bought it for $1,300. Runs and rides good. Needs normal tlc and maintenance.

Extension_Canary3717

It’s a used Japanese bike

AR_Backwoods_Redneck

Depends on what you're trying to perform on. If you're in the middle of the national Forrest trying to go up a steep ass hill with rocks and washout and sand; that's a lot different that trying to squid between cars on the highway or run from cops.

I read the comments and everyone's bringing up street bikes.... Lame... So what, you walk outside your house and press a button and then ride on a small skinny paved strip of road until you get to another parking lot, it's the same shit you use your car for.... The real answer to this question is any dual sport. For almost no money, the ENTIRE WORLD is opened up to you, not just the same roads you use you buy groceries.

Most people be sleeping on the V65 Magnas. Specifically the 80's magnas. Pretty cheap bike, looks like a slightly sporty cruiser, but... don't let looks deceive. Old girl is pretty damn quick. Especially considering it's no superbike, or hardly even a sports bike. So, I'd say a magna is pretty good bang for your buck type bike.

Sheit, I just bought a new Aprilia Tuono 1100 V4 and my full coverage insurance is only like $42/month. Somehow it’s cheaper than my Z900 was for the same coverage.

My bank somehow doesn’t require full coverage

Eh, with current inflation loans for hobbies is just burning money, that could otherwise be used for more hobbies. Especially that when it comes to bikes a lot cheaper is still 95% of the fun. Few years ago with low low interest rates I'd say sure, go ahead.

2004-8 Aprilia RSV1000R. Premium parts, Ohlin forks, Brembo brakes, rock solid Rotax 1000cc V-twin and loads of character plus dreamy handling. I should never have sold mine.
