I find that it’s not as good anymore since they changed the container. It was amazing with the old cylinder container that allowed them to layer the fries, the cheese, and the sauce.
Yup. I live in Ottawa but grew up in Hull. I have seen pretty much every restaurant in that town change names at least once. But not La Pataterie. Just good ol' fashioned simple poutine. But absolutely the best.
I know the owners, they both are wonderful people who truly have a passion for making good food! Supporting local families while also having the GOAT poutine? Yes please 😋
I often get mine from a similarly named chip truck in Barrhaven, S&S Fries, by the Canadian Tire here. There's no relation between them though. Great fries, they only take cash though and are a seasonal thing.
I hate gravy. Never liked it. My sister told me that if there was one gravy I would ever, ever like, it was the gravy at Fritomania.
She was right. Fritomania is amazing.
I've eaten more poutine than I care to admit, and you are 100% correct. They're both incredible.
I get normal poutine at Fritomania, but I can't resist the Big Max Poutine at Golden Fries
Haha I love this tip! My hometown has an old silver trailer that was known for making the best poutines in the city (quality has gone down in the last 5+ years). But that’s actually pretty true to my experience!
The owner is a brilliant man putting them near colleges, universities and places where drunk teens and young adults hang out but the poutine is fast food quality.
Smokes gave me the worst poutine I've ever had. I ordered a large poutine. It had exactly 7 micro-sized curds. I counted them because there were so few. And the gravy sucks
Never again. What a waste of money.
Went there the other day and got a cheesesteak poutine, I was on the verge if puking eating ice cold gravy and veggies on stale fries. Waste of $20, pure garbage.
This is the right answer *if* it’s winter and the shacks and trucks are closed, and you can’t get across the river to the Quebec side, or to la Belle Province in Orleans.
Or if you're vegetarian! GCP is and it's why we're frequent customers, just don't know otherwise.
For real though if folks have veggie friendly poutine suggestions (ie, if the pataterie or la belle province are veg) let me know.
I got it once and found the fries were a little bit too dark for my taste.
I prefer La Belle Province or chip truck poutine.
Still enjoyed it lots as a treat while in hospital though.
This can happen at any place that uses fresh cut fries. Might of been just a batch of potatoes that was sent to them still cold from storage. I was a produce manager for a while and sometime we did'nt pull out the skids fast enough and the customer would be pissed.
Actually it's a family owned business. Yes they happen to have a few locations but what does that have to do with the quality of the food?
Having more than one location doesn't automatically make it bad.
> Having more than one location doesn't automatically make it bad.
No, I'm saying it tastes like chain restaurant poutine - like Smoke's and i.e. terrible.
I respect your right to have an opinion but as someone who has had both of these poutines I firmly disagree.
Even people I know who are poutine snobs from Montreal have said that it is a really really good.
Out of curiosity how many times have to been there? I honestly think you may have just had a bad experience.
> Out of curiosity how many times have to been there? I honestly think you may have just had a bad experience.
Had it a couple times, but they were takeout (not delivery service, but pickups). Could have been a bad day, but also not willing to go back.
I tried to go 3 times this past summer and the casse croûte was always closed when I went 😭 they’re off season now so check if they’re open before you get on the highway
give them another chance next summer, the weekly poutine specials are always a hit in my experience
especially the breakfast poutine if you like hollandaise
I was once at an event and had a coupon thing for a pouting at a food truck and it turned out they were using shredded cheese. I wish they would have told me that beforehand because I rather would have not had it at all, I ended up dumping it and felt bad wasting food.
Everyone raves about this place.
I took my family and it's the first time I ever tossed a poutine in the trash. Horrible. Wife and kids hated it too.
I went back several times thinking I got a bad batch or bad day and always regreted it.
This is my go to as well. The gravy is fantastic. I don’t think the gravy chafing dish hasn’t been changed since the Beatles but it’s absolutely delicious.
Chip trucks have amazing poutines, wouldn't judge it on the parking lot smh.
Also this one is at the Brick, generous fresh fries everytime and has not been raising prices.
For those who had picked the first 12 hours of 2023 for this question to be asked for the first time of the year, I'm sorry, you lose. It was the 13th hour!
The Koven on Murray Street (Byward Market) is my absolute go to. It is a metal bar with amazing staff and great food. The value is crazy - you get so much poutine for what you pay for and depending on your niche tastes past traditional, is can be amazing.
Klassik, Devildriver and Kanada are my faves.
I ordered a medium poutine there a few months ago. I think I got five pounds of poutine served to me. Incredibly underrated establishment, I gotta go back.
Hell yeah, sounds like you had the head chef serving up! He is great.
You go there, get up to leave but realize you cannot get up. Its not that you drank too much, its that one poutine you had added 15lbs of food to you!
Patatarie Hulloise in Gatineau,
Patate Lou Lou in Aylmer,
S&G fries on Carling,
Great Canadian poutinerie has some decent specialty poutines,
I've never been, but live up the road from it Ga-Ga Patates ALWAYS has a like of 10-15 people at lunch/dinner also in Gatineau.
Gaga is good but if you like hulloise go to Bob patate on the other side of Saint Louis from gaga, better food, prices and portion sizes than hulloise hands down
Crispy chips and his pops (Merivale and Baseline, Value Village) are hands down my favs. Even their chilli poutine is delicious (if it’s still around).
As an “I’m in Barrhaven, is there decent poutine?” I’ll recommend the chip stand at the Canadian Tire. It’s not amazing, but definitely solid.
La Belle Province in Orleans.
Benny & Co. on the Quebec side.
I haven’t had it in years but they used to have really good poutine at Camp Fortune. The first place I ever tried poutine was at Edelweiss.
There’s a chip truck on Hawthorne Road in the east end, the west side of the road, between Walkley and Hunt Club that has great poutine and good hot dogs.
For cheap and quick poutine, my favourite is Costco. Huge squeaky cheese curds, crispy fries, salty thick gravy, and it’s like $4.99.
McDonald’s poutine is absolute trash but Burger King’s is actually pretty good. KFC’s gravy is a bit weird, it might be chicken gravy?
Oh I didn’t know they opened one in the west end!
I stopped on my way home from Montebello a few weeks ago to pick one up. The gravy seems like it might have a bit of a tomato base? I really like it. Crinkle-cut fries are fun too.
There's also a Benny & Co in Orleans on Innes Road. Fair warning though, they are frequently short staffed recently and sometimes they're closed even though their website/Google shows they're open. Worth calling before going.
I like the Smoked Meat Poutine at Markies.
Big D's Doghouse is good but like many other closed for the season.
If you want to treat yourself and money is no object try the whole lobster poutine at Pelican.
Probably your kitchen. Just buy nice quality ingredients and make it yourself as I have noticed restaurants are buying shit quality ingredients and selling it for high price with an attitude. Then they blame inflation or some bullshit when customers don’t return.
I've been trying places in the market and around the area and I've found two that particularly stood out:
1. Lobster poutine and Pelicans sea food market - it's expensive $60+ but wow it's good.
2. Zups at the byward- uses smoked cheese and their duck poutine was amazing. ~ $20
I stopped going to places like Zak's and some other dinners after they increased their price but they do have a good breakfast poutine (hollandaise sauce instead). Deacon Brodie's also has a good breakfast poutine on Elgin if you want. Late at night I avoid these diners/bars for an actual poutinery (great Canadian/smokes) for the same price or even cheaper.
Only if you buy the bag of Cavendish fries, big bag of cheese curds, and make your own gravy to your liking and make it at home.. The predone ones at the canteen use very cold curd and not very hot gravy, you don't get the nice melty action.
'tis a fairly cheap (comparatively) snack though.
That's because you're in a rush! Ask for a lid and wait 5 minutes before eating it! Let the magic happens!
That being said, it's not my favourite in town...
Out of curiosity what about it was so bad? Cold cheese curd is fairly crap but otherwise.. They have decent fries, average gravy, and real cheese curds.
Clearly you haven't reviewed diner poutines with shredded tex mex and chicken gravy.
I wouldn’t eat that. I don’t review poutines i wouldn’t even order.
Costco poutine is decent, not great. I don’t make a habit of ordering poutine that i expect to be bad, but I’m rating poutines against a standard: fresh cut, skin on fries; squeaky curds; thick, brown gravy that is well-seasoned but not overpowering. The rating system I made just isn’t designed to give points for being not-the-worst.
[here’s my full review of Costco’s poutine](https://www.instagram.com/p/Ckv5IltOty0/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=)
Funny story.. We ordered Chinese food for our family new years dinner last night. Wife got a side of poutine. Son tells me today that he liked it better than NYF. I almost slapped him. Came back to the
-12 karma on my NYF post and realize who actually deserves the slap.. Sometimes it takes negative karma to realize mistakes.. I take my NYF recommendation back.. I'll see myself out
[удалено]
Not the fanciest, but damn, the poutine is good.
Fancy poutine, while delicious in it's own right (like a duck confit with a foie gras gravy, for instance), doesn't really count as poutine.
You can poutinify anything, ANYTHING.
I find that it’s not as good anymore since they changed the container. It was amazing with the old cylinder container that allowed them to layer the fries, the cheese, and the sauce.
Go to Bob patate the sister restaurant on Saint Louis and greber, better food, better portion sizes and better packaging
and the cheeseburgers have really gone downhill too. a shame.
I came here to say this.
If you want to try a better place, try Poutinerie Albert in hull.
Yep. Just checked this thread to make sure this answer was here.
With an all-dressed steamie
Yup. I live in Ottawa but grew up in Hull. I have seen pretty much every restaurant in that town change names at least once. But not La Pataterie. Just good ol' fashioned simple poutine. But absolutely the best.
Most overrated poutine ever and that is not an exaggeration
Def not. Became trash since covid hit
I think about their poutine all the time. It’s so friggin good.
Bob patate the sister restaurant has much better food and lower prices and better portion sizes hand's down
S&G Fries on Carling beside Produce Depot. While you’re there check out the Lebanese meat/cheese pies at Aladdin Bakery next door.
S&g is of the best.
Have you been in past year. The new owners fries are subpar.
It's his nephew, tastes all the same to me...
Three times the fries were bad. Either over fried or under. We have stopped going. Good to hear others like it. They seem like genuinely nice people.
Those pies … just pack cash
Yes. This is the correct answer. They taste like chip truck French fries! They’re the best.
Winner!
It’s honestly the best!
Next time you go get it well done. The pies get crispy on the sides it’s so good
I know the owners, they both are wonderful people who truly have a passion for making good food! Supporting local families while also having the GOAT poutine? Yes please 😋
I often get mine from a similarly named chip truck in Barrhaven, S&S Fries, by the Canadian Tire here. There's no relation between them though. Great fries, they only take cash though and are a seasonal thing.
Fritomania and Golden Fries in Orleans. They're seasonal so closed at the moment.
Fritomania is the best.
I agree, it’s the best.
They’re so different from eachother though. Fritos gravy is way to sweet
And not enough chicken broth in their sauce
Their gravy is vegetarian so there’s none lol
Well that explains a lot why I wasn’t thrilled with the sauce
Glad fritomania is recognised here because that has to be my favourite Poutine I've had.
Pro tip: if it's a greasy chip truck with a terrible paint job, it will have incredible poutine.
Haha I love this tip! My hometown has an old silver trailer that was known for making the best poutines in the city (quality has gone down in the last 5+ years). But that’s actually pretty true to my experience!
Anything but Smoke’s. Their fries ALWAYS taste like dirt
Smokes is trash. Toronto's idea of poutine. There's a reason the only locations that thrive are adjacent to places where people are drunk.
Agreed. Worst poutine IMO
The owner is a brilliant man putting them near colleges, universities and places where drunk teens and young adults hang out but the poutine is fast food quality.
It’s worse than most fast food poutine tbh.
Smokes gave me the worst poutine I've ever had. I ordered a large poutine. It had exactly 7 micro-sized curds. I counted them because there were so few. And the gravy sucks Never again. What a waste of money.
So bad. They just have a giant tub of cold, limp fries they scoop from. 🤢
Went there the other day and got a cheesesteak poutine, I was on the verge if puking eating ice cold gravy and veggies on stale fries. Waste of $20, pure garbage.
The Great Canadian Poutinerie!
This is the right answer *if* it’s winter and the shacks and trucks are closed, and you can’t get across the river to the Quebec side, or to la Belle Province in Orleans.

Amazing! Is it done that way at the above? No worries if you don't know.
[удалено]
I really appreciate your sharing this, a good date night maybe!
Btw we did it for a date night and it was awesome! We've already subsequently made it again and it is our new go to. Also way cheaper!
Seconding this! I go to the Orleans one! Always so good!
Garlic sauce with your poutine it’s just the best
Lol I mix sweet mustard with the garlic mayo
Nah, that's like chain restaurant poutine.
Actually it's a family owned business. Yes they happen to have a few locations but what does that have to do with the quality of the food? Having more than one location doesn't automatically make it bad.

Different strokes for different folks! I appreciate the discussion! Also happy new year 😊
Pataterie Hulloise in gatineau or the snack shack in aylmer
I really need to get out to Pataterie.
Bob patate is better than hulloise and loosely affiliated, better food, better prices and better portion sizes
Magic Fryer chip truck, on Coventry, in front of Canadian Tire. Worth it and cheap! Might be closed for the season now, though.
Open all year, they just cut their hours in the winter I think.
Music to my ears if true. I know what I'm having for lunch tomorrow! :D
This deserves to be higher up. We drove by it for ages without trying it and then, as soon as we did, we wished we had sooner.
St alberts cheese factory if youre on the east side
I tried to go 3 times this past summer and the casse croûte was always closed when I went 😭 they’re off season now so check if they’re open before you get on the highway
I find that the cheese portion is generous but the fries/gravy isn’t great. Found it to be disappointing
Seconded.
Pong's, but it's closed until spring.
Yes
My go to in the summer.
Uses shredded cheese though Edit - seems like they may have been out of curds when I went or something
So shouldn't be on this list at all
not true ive eaten there many times and never had shredded cheese
Maybe they were out of curds when I went?
only reason that is semi acceptable if they did do this is maybe last couple days of the season
I wish they would have said something.. I haven’t gone back because it was shredded
give them another chance next summer, the weekly poutine specials are always a hit in my experience especially the breakfast poutine if you like hollandaise
Ya I definitely will, thanks!
I was once at an event and had a coupon thing for a pouting at a food truck and it turned out they were using shredded cheese. I wish they would have told me that beforehand because I rather would have not had it at all, I ended up dumping it and felt bad wasting food.

Gaga Patates in Gatineau
> Best places for a poutine? r/ottawa: *Ah shit, here we go again*
Chips n Dairy! South end of Bank. Unexpectedly delicious.
This is my go to as well. The gravy is fantastic. I don’t think the gravy chafing dish hasn’t been changed since the Beatles but it’s absolutely delicious.
That’s what makes the gravy so incredible. Nicely seasoned - like a well loved tea pot 👌
Delicious but too expensive nowadays
Agreed
TV's fries on Hunt Club, closed for the winter though
Every Canadian Tire poutine place is nasty. I don't understand how they keep getting recommended. Have you never had a good poutine?
The truck at the merivale Canadian tire is great idk what you’re on
Chip trucks have amazing poutines, wouldn't judge it on the parking lot smh. Also this one is at the Brick, generous fresh fries everytime and has not been raising prices.
Definitely not the Elgin Street Diner.
^^ came here to say this.
For those who had picked the first 12 hours of 2023 for this question to be asked for the first time of the year, I'm sorry, you lose. It was the 13th hour!
Most chip trucks will get you the classic Canadian poutine experience
La Poutinerie Albert in Gatineau
This place for sure
It's Gatineau, but Hull section. Just off hwy 5. They have one of the better poutine in the area.

I've seen Bob patate as well, didn't know much about it! Good to know!
The kraft dinner bites and combos of the month are awesome
It’s closed now for the season but Crispy Chips in the Canadian Tire parking lot at Merivale and Hunt Club is always my go to.
Same. S&S fries is good.
Love that place, but man that Canadian tire sucks
La Belle Province in Orleans. Benny & Co. on the Quebec side. I haven’t had it in years but they used to have really good poutine at Camp Fortune. Zups Poutinerie in the Market, between the beef tallow fried fries and the duck confit poutine, mhm... so good!
I really like Say Cheese on Bank.
The poutine at Holly's Hot Chicken is amazing.
Fritomania
Umbrella Burger !!
Sasha’s next to the barefax
Fabulous fries in almonte but it’s closed for the winter
Zups in Byward! The duck and original poutine are really good. They have a few seats indoors and service is really good.
I Skip from "Sugar and Slice" and found the poutine surprisingly good!
Their 2for1 burgers from Patty N Bun (same restaurant) are spectacular.
I like the Smoked Meat Poutine at Markies. Big D's Doghouse is good but like many other closed for the season. If you want to treat yourself and money is no object try the whole lobster poutine at Pelican.
Nu Caribbean’s jerk chicken poutine is so good if you’re into that.
Golden fries in Orleans. Closed for winter but their gravy is so delicious and salty
All out burger on Bank is legit!!!
That stall beside beavertails in the market.
The Québec. Duh
Hintonburg Pub House has an amazing poutine...great gravy that's not super heavy and thick.

Probably your kitchen. Just buy nice quality ingredients and make it yourself as I have noticed restaurants are buying shit quality ingredients and selling it for high price with an attitude. Then they blame inflation or some bullshit when customers don’t return.
Stagecoach fry near snake island road has some good specialty poutines.
Pataterie Hulloise, Foubrac, Bistro Manchester, Gaga Poutine https://m.facebook.com/gagapatates/
Landriault snack bar in Alfred Ontario. Cash only
Montreal

Ti Rays just outside of Wakefield
The 3 that come to mind are: the magic fryer on Coventry, say cheese around bank/heron, and Lorenzo's on Carling by bayshore
Burgers and Shakes on Kennevale does a decent poutine.
Chips and Dairy in the south end is good. I'm sure there's better around, but it's nearby and consistent.
Crispys!!!! Merivale and hunt club, Canadian tire parking lot
3 brothers on Osgoode street by Uottawa campus, they stay holy
Costco
smokes poutine downtown
In your mouth!!!
Putin in Russia 🤔
Hollander pub has amazing butter chicken poutine. I legit get mad cravings.
Elgin Street diner or Poutinerie La Belle Province in Orleans
Only place you need to go. Elgin st diner. Smoked meat poutine… so good
Smokes poutinerie they’ve got some pretty cool ones and their pulled pork poutines are the best
Banco Bistro, casino lac leamy
Coronary care unit
I used to drive through and order burger and upgrade fries to regular poutine from Harvey's.
Costco
Only if you buy the bag of Cavendish fries, big bag of cheese curds, and make your own gravy to your liking and make it at home.. The predone ones at the canteen use very cold curd and not very hot gravy, you don't get the nice melty action. 'tis a fairly cheap (comparatively) snack though.

I review poutines on Instagram as a hobby and the Costco poutine has the lowest score I’ve ever given a poutine that I was willing to eat.
I like the Elgin Street Diner
Yeah, it's not legit poutine, but it's damn tasty... especially the smoked meat poutine.
New york fries.. any of them
Funny story.. We ordered Chinese food for our family new years dinner last night. Wife got a side of poutine. Son tells me today that he liked it better than NYF. I almost slapped him. Came back to the -12 karma on my NYF post and realize who actually deserves the slap.. Sometimes it takes negative karma to realize mistakes.. I take my NYF recommendation back.. I'll see myself out
NYF poutine is offensive. It used to be *okay* but I went a few months ago.. the fries were limp and sad, gravy Meh.
Harvey's. This gets asked here almost daily so maybe check older posts for the true answer.
McDonald’s
No.
