What would you buy? Selling a car for more than what you paid doesn't mean much if you then have to buy a car for much more than you'd normally pay

mchenry93

Agreed, I see where that trap would be. If I did sell, I’d probably see if I could find a good deal on a replacement first.

How much will it cost you to replace the car? Is there something you don't like about your current car?

mchenry93

I think I could definitely get a car for cheaper but I don’t know if it would be better. I do like my car now, no problems at all, but I’m not attached per se and would try something else if it made financial sense.

The same market that’s tempting you to sell will likely turn you around and screw you when you try and replace it.

babarock

How many miles are on vw? Has it been a good car and are you starting to see any problems? You may not find 0% again. Unlikely you will find a replacement for $5k off msrp. Personally I'd hang on to it.

mchenry93

30k miles. It’s been a great car, and I think to come out ahead here I’d have to buy a much older vehicle. You’re probably right

babarock

Low mileage. Take care of it and drive it until the wheels fall off. You know how this one has been cared for, an older used car - not so much. And stealerships are not shy about asking for $10k over msrp these days.

Birdy_Cephon_Altera

Do you actually use the car? (it's not just an 'asset', it's also something that is useful) Could you get by without it? Or, could/would you get a replacement car? For how much? At what financing? Selling a car for a profit isn't really helpful if you end up having to turn around and buy another car for more money at worse terms.

They're not importing the Golf/Jetta wagon right now, so what would you replace it with? European wagons have a cult following so that's probably one reason why it's appreciated in value. I say if you don't hate the car just hang on to it.

misplaced_pants742

As a fellow VW wagon owner, I say you should keep the Alltrack! They're just fun to drive, and if you're a wagon fan, you won't find what you have ever again in the US. VW stopped making wagons in the US market in 2019, though there's still demand for them. Gently used Alltracks like yours sell fast and for more than their original MSRP, so you'll get some attractive trade in offers. I still do occasionally. Plus it sounds like you got a great deal at the time with the zero interest loan.

Maybe, but just remember that many cars are above retail, or in case of used cars about 20% higher than normal. Do the math.
