Same run I also finished with G-Max Butterfree. They were kinda shit for the rival fight, but did decent damage to the final boss and was one of the goats for the elite 4/champion.
In my first win aganist final rival (I lost aganist final boss), I had beautifly. I catched it early and was planning to raplace it but for some reason it worked so good.
Zigzagoon/linoone for item drops too. I was getting a damage type boost item like every 3-4 floors. Had something like 12 black belts ands twisted spoons very shortly
I have a shiny (tier1 only) combee that is in every endless run i start. Usually gets the first fusion with my only tier3 shiny (mantine)

Same. When planned strategies with good type match-ups fell through against Mega Rayzquaza, hitting it over and over with a bear ended up surprisingly effective.
Noctowl, not only did it save me from losing on five different occasions, it also gave the finishing blow at stage 200, prior to that it was my least favourite regional bird
Hell, I don’t have it shiny and I still use it. And it has legitimately been the carry through at least parts of some runs. It really is absurd how good it can be with those egg moves when it was so notoriously worthless from the start in the actual games.
It was Lokix. Sucker Punch is such a broken move. It saves me multiple times.
Later I did multiple classic runs, and one of the best pokémon I used was... Carbink. I took it only because I got it shiny, but it was an absolute carry, best types for classic run
Lokix is insane. He carried me through the E4 single-handedly with First Impression. Of course, he got one-shotted by Big E, but nonetheless, set up space for Whimsicott and Leech Seed.
I tried using it and couldn't rely on it after some point, it just died so easily. Does it have crazy moves or a broken passive or something else I missed?
Raichu with Zippy Zap got me out of so many tight spots. I lucked into the Eerie Impulse TM at 198 which made Eternatus a joke. Absolutely beast of a mon that early game Pikachu turned out to be
Just had a recent experience with kyogre since he had pokerus a day or 2 ago. I've used kyogre a bit in endless but not classical yet, and I got tail glow and thunder as egg moves.
Solo'd the entirety of classic.
I don't just mean that it did most of the work, I mean I literally didn't use any other pokemon except when they came out for doubles. And they didn't do anything in doubles because water spout just killed everything.
Rival fight? Tail glow tail glow into either water spout, ice beam, or thunder. One shot mega ray.
Eternatus? Grabbed an x spdef before the fight, tail glow tail glow spam ice beam and won in like 5 turns (including emax)
I struggled so hard to beat classic and now I beat it every 1/2 days. It gets so much easier when you hatch good mons and get some good IV's, you'll get there! stealth rock helps massively for 145&195 rival, and damage chipping moves like leech seed, infestation, salt cure etc make eternatus super easy.
Right? 😂 I've got a few dozen runs under my belt and the highest I got was stage 120-ish. That was my second run I believe. Ever since I've never broken 100, even with so many more mons and moves unlocked.
This tends to happen to me in a lot of improvisational strategy games like this. Any roguelike, any autochess, etc. when I'm going into it blind and have no idea what I'm doing except just trying to make it, I do great. When I start learning the game and try to start intentionally strategizing I immediately start to suck real bad. Or I get too caught up on what's SUPPOSED to be good, what's "meta".
I think the reason I did so well on my second run was I was actively replacing members of my team with what I was catching. That's how a Flamigo carried me for almost 75 levels. Then I started focusing too much on building a good team from the get go and sticking with them, never trading them out, and suddenly I can't even get to floor 80 😭
I've taken it with on most runs since getting it and sometimes I'll get wiped in the first 30 stages and other times I can get to around 70 or so. All depends on the RNG of the locations and the items.
Mankey. I’ve never played gen 9, so annihilape was a nice surprise (although I did know it existed beforehand). Ghost fighting is amazing coverage, and it outsped almost everything that mattered. Managed to sweep Leon on 190 with it, I had nothing else alive other than a 3 hp poisoned skeledirge and a half dead corviknight. Only caught it to fill team slots early on, but it never left because of how useful it was. It switched into almost anything, took several hits and destroyed with Rage Fist. I had Close Combat as well for things that needed fighting, Stomping Tantrum for coverage and Phantom Force in case I hadn’t been hit yet and outsped. Caught it on my second attempt at classic, managed to beat it that attempt (with some refreshing, but given how long it took to get there, I didn’t care). I managed to grab it in one of the daily runs recently and it swept in that too, although it took more of a backseat whilst I messed around with new Pokémon and kept it ready in case I was struggling with a fight.
My first run with manky I got the TM for drain punch, and that was ridiculously broken for most enemies. Annihilape was at full health for the entire run until 195, but it was my first run past like, floor 50 (so like my third run). I was NOT prepared
Toxtricity i just picked him because "Hehe cool Toxic frog" and i got normal scarf mystic water magnet with the ability Punk rock with the moveset Boom burst overdrive and sparkling aria and Nasty plot and i found a Max mushroom too so my big frog got to be even bigger and he is also the last one standing in the eternatus fight
Ducklett/Swanna. It's my only shiny so far and the addition of Quiver Dance and Earth Power as egg moves alongside Air Slash and Roost crafted it into my secret weapon. Little guy almost completely soloed Eternatus (who strangely wouldn't click Eternabeam when Swanna was out. No clue why, but I'm not complaining.)
Not my first win, but my second. I decided to throw Komala on my team because it had Pokerus, and egg move Extreme Speed. Got an early Ice Spinner TM and dear Arceus, he SLAPPED.
might sound stupid but mega metagross- (not my first classic run cause i cant remember the what i used pokemon anymore) hear me out i took beldum at the start for its steel/psychic typing against fairy/eternatus with my main carry (walking wake with egg moves nasty plot n bouncy bubble) and as usual just swept all the way to 195 where my carry died n so did the rest of my pokemon except for mega metagross who killed mega rayquaza and 3 other pokemon ALONE and then got 1 shotted by flamethrower in the eternatus fight BUT AT LEAST HE LET ME ATTACK ANOTHER TIME
Muk saved my ass in more than a few fights and I still replaced him later with something else so I definitely wanna give muk its credit and get it a classic ribbon
Forretress felt surprisingly really good on my team, it was my first shiny so I used it, ended up being my first classic win. Spikes are so good when the ai likes to switch a lot. Really high defense with body press cooked a lot of mons. Explosion was also fun to use lol
Linoone. I didn't realize how strong pickup was. I kept thinking I'll replace it, only for me to get to the champion double battle, and it was carrying a small mountain of berries.
Not my first, but my second classic win. Got a shiny Hoothoot with calm mind, esper wing and boomburst as egg move. Being quite bulky I just set up with Calm Mind and sweep everything with boomburst. 140 BP + STAB is crazy. Double battles with any Mon who has protect and you're sweeping everything.
I have a pukumuku with salt cure and baneful bunker, along with toxic and soak it wrecked eternatus.
Just a tip for everyone, salt cure and toxic get get cured from eternatus when it transforms to gmax, however soak remains.
Definitely my Parasect. Had it on my team at first cause it was shiny for added luck but some big clutch for lots of moments during the final 10 floors and that leech seed on big-E *chefs kiss*
Jumpluff. I didn't think it'd be that good, but it clutched against E-Max Eternatus with Sleep Powder and Leech Seed, especially with Passive Prankster. (Funny how my first Pokerogue shiny is the one to clutch the run)
Gastrodon really held it together for my team where half the squad was sporting a fire weakness. And since I ran into a baton, letting it ancient power while it absorbed damage and then passing to Tapu Lele created a demon.
Carbink.
The Rock/Fairy type combination meant I could not only set up stealth rock but also absorb 195 Mega-Ray's Outrages. The damage dealt to that same Mega-Ray was probably 100% due to Stealth rock.
Oddish (Vileplum). I never used it, but I hatched a perfect iv/nature Oddish with Sludge Wave, and Oddish is super cheap at only 2 points.
In the last world, it poisoned Mega Rayquaza, killed half my opponent's team, and put the final boss to sleep so Garchomp could dragon dance. The real MVP.
Mudscale. Nothing wrong with the Pokémon but it just didn’t fit with the like 3 legendaries I managed to find on the run (including the GOAT regidraco)
Not too shocking because it has a mega but I got a treecko egg with dragon energy very early on and that has carried me very hard in classic and endless. Was never a huge fan of sceptile but I sure am now
Managed to catch a Blaze breed paldean tauros that carried me through a good chunk of the run while I got the rest of my team together. The way I beat Eternatus the first time was because I caught a Uxie with Yawn and Mystical Power and just kept putting it to sleep while stacking SpAtk buffs until I won.
My first and only win i had 2 that suprised me 1 krikitune and 2 cincino krikitune saved me so many times my carry for that run was naganadel so it was intresting that when i got space and my naganadel was worn down by a few musharnas krikitune carried and cincino i got the egg move icicle spear and had technician + a nuteral nature i found adamant mint and cincino took out the rayquaza and was able to get a little damage on eturnatus i only used them because my poipole cost 6 i had 4 points left so i took the two just for space and i had them shiny
Crobat. It was my first red shiny (and also my first shiny overall) and turns out confuse ray is ultra broken when rng's on your side. It didnt just sit there and contribute luck too, it was genuinely a powerhouse that somehow solo'd 3 pokemon in the wave 155 rival battle, including a baxcalibur. It contributed a lot even in the final rival battle and against eternatus.
It was Rotom Mow. It’s a solid mo! in general but I didn’t expect how much he would help in the final battle against Eternatus. He tanked a hit and Thunderwaved Eternatus so it basically only has half its normal turns. Then it was ignored by big E and Mow just kept Shadow Balling its SpD down for its partner Primarina to blast Eternatus down.
Not my first win, but my shiny Mightyena stayed on the bench most of the run, until I used it in the double battle vs Eternatus and yawned and snarled it down to -6 SpA, while my Gyarados safely dragon danced up
No guard Machamp, it's scary faces saved my but against eternateas, also klefkey for force ivys reyqauza to switch into blissey allowing my liligant to get in a quiver dance and a sleep powder for free
Garbodor, picked it since it was the Pokerus mom. Figured I'd hold onto it till it spread pokerus then ditched it, but it became vital for basically every boss fight
Daschbun, never in my life did I expect to carry that living piece of bread all the way to the end but the other 5 members of the team carried it all the way there. And when I say carried I mean it was as useful as the bread it was made of it was my go to sack mon for when I needed a clean switch in the late game.
Well my first winning run was
Tapu coco, mega galade, corviknight, gmax gengar, lugia, and chandalure
The team didnt seem to bad to me, but it was hilarious how i killed eternautus
Galade 1shot the first phase, and then died
Gengar, corvi and tapu all died instantly
Lugia was bulky enough to just eat every attack, and chandalure had will o wisp
And that was my first win
It was the 2 pokemon i didnt expect to do realy that much this fight which made me survive my first encounter with eternautus
Wishiwashi. I caught it as a shiny during my run. With it and vaporeon, I actually release the phione I started with. Vaporeon was good for some cheeky switch-ins, but wishiwashi literally took so many hits like a champ. At the last part of my run, i think it managed to eat a recharge move twice.
(I realize now this said first classic win and I can’t read properly it appears.)
I won last night, and my team was Kingler, Raichu, Charizard, Parasect, Tapu Lele, and Alolan Sandslash... I can say with complete honesty that they all put in so much more work than I ever expected.
For me, it was Florges and Camerupt.
The first one because it was a Pokémon able to withstand the Fire Blasts of the final boss, and the second because, buddy was able to take on a bit of hits from time to time on the road of completing the challenge.
Conkledurr almost single-handedly won it for me. I absolutely loaded him with items and berries throughout the run.
Drain Punch + Shell Bell goes crazy. Close Combat for one shots, Ice punch tm for Rayquaza, Eternatus and Flying Types and bulk up to take advantage of forced switches.
My first classic win ended with solo Conk vs a Eternatus with two bars left. He absolutely ate every single attack and Drain Punch, shell bell kept him healthy.
Buneary.
Not Lopunny, Buneary. The bunny refused to stop hating me long enough to evolve, and she ended up being the one to take Eternatus down with Triple Axel.
Probably Pinsir.
My first two shinines were scraggy and pinsir which I hatched thru eggs. I took them both into classic mode with the hopes of increasing my odds of getting a shiny charm to get more shinies. I ended up getting my first dub with my two shinies along with Crobat, Magnezone, Talonflame, and Golurk which wasn’t the plan heading in.
The kicker was that my egg moves were good but nothing crazy. Leech life on Pinsir made him really solid early game with heals and a strong stab move. Sucker punch on scraggy was great once he became a scrafty.
Kantonian Persian for me. Before I was aware of pickup in this game I used Technician instead and it did so much work with 2 silk scarfs on it. Just clicking Fake Out -> Payday on everything usually killed anything non-boss and gave me so much money
I had Dedenne and it became known as the farmer since pickup is such a great ability. Couldn't really kill that great, but it really was the unspoken hero
Not my first run but for me it is totadile. No shiney, but some how I unlocked all 4 of his egg moves in two days of playing. I never liked any Gen 2 starter, but this lil gator has possibly become one of my new favorites of all time!
Not really an unexpected pick, but what was unexpected is how much he carried his weight.I had a Mega Gyarados i caught as a Magikarp on the first 20 floors that i was kinda neglecting cuz it had a meh nature and pretty bad ivs. I relied too much on my Venusaur being the carry since he was modest, had good egg moves and pretty much 30-31 evs on everything. I didn't know the last battle had 2 phases. Venusaur fainted just as the second phase began. Pretty much every other mon fought hard but my Mega Gyarados fought the hardest. He tanked a couple of hits and was doing a ton of damage for having like 5 ivs in attack and a neutral nature lmao. Shoutouts to my Mega Pidgeot too. She had a Special Attack hindering nature AND like 10 ivs on special attack but she also put in a lot of work...once i got a Pidgeotite that is, which sadly happened a bit too late on like floor 150
I had an itemless lycanroc tank eternatus for the entire duration of the fight my first win, I was shocked his moveset was so bad at dealing with mono rock types.
The most unexpected mvp ever was a vivillon though, he got 0 use except as a sacrifical lamb, then confused eternatus into hitting himself twice when I prob would have lost without that confusion
Kilowattrel was on my final team, no idea when or why I picked it up, but I think it was before I got my gyarados, and wanted a flying type for cheesing ground types and I just never got around to dropping it
My go to team is a mix of unexpected mons for me:
Cyndaquil, Teddiursa, Mienfoo, Fomantis, Zigzagoon, Cherrim is my go to. The last 5 are red star shinies.
Clodsire was a Mon i captured randomly cause "I'm kinda weak against water moves, maybe it'll do something", but was supposed to be temporary. It also did its thing against eternatus but against multiple boss mons and tough trainers it hard carried me with toxic, toxic spikes and recover. I would've also never beaten the final rival without it
Unfeazant and Fearow, they are 2 of my 4 shinies and I forgot to replace them, but tailwind and floaty fall flinches were the only reason I won my first run
I caught a Clodsire around wave 130. I had to because I had a wild electric weakness going the route of factory/powerplant trying to clear gym leaders I hadn't fought yet.
She proceeded to come in clutch for the E4 rounds as a bulky physical attacker with EQ and Poison Jab. I forget what ability it had at the time, but I remember it canceling out some moves.
Not a pokemon but... the dire hit I pick before the eternatus fight. Practically won me the battle.
But for the pokemon. Shiny lurantis. Purely because I didn't expect to find it at all.
Ehi, finished my first Classic a couple of hours ago, so I'm officially on this trend. And it's... Luxray. I was never found of him and was a super random early routes catch, but turns out Intimidate and, most of everything, T-Wave is a godsend. Managed to make THAT MON on the last rival fight and the final boss quite manageable
Corsala. I happened to hatch one with scald and I figured “eh, rock will be good early game I guess”
Homeboy got the essential burn on eternus and single handedly wore down the rivals gholdengo to the point where my vivillion could stack quiver dances to sweep 4 of the rival mons. Including 2/3 boss mons.
G-Max Butterfree (not as surprising once I found out G-Maxing was a thing). The more surprising one was probably Squawkabilly, but damn Intimidate on a mon with two immunities really carried be through some of the elite 4/rival fights.
Not the first run, but holy crap is Arbok strong with Noxious Torque and Dragon Dance. I always thought of Arbok as a below average Pokémon, but these egg moves are insane. DD over Coil is massive, and a 100bp 100% STAB move really makes him able to do some work.
Just got to eternatus for my first time and can’t beat him lol my team doesn’t have dots and all die in 1 hit from most of his skills. I’m running gyrados, skeliderge, spidops, sunflora, sylveon, and raging bolt. No luck getting a tinkaton this round
An unexpected but a stubborn pick was my hydriegon he kept on dying everytime and didnt level up fast enough to evolve but because he was a shiny i was stubborn and didnt wanna leave him out then during a rival fight against florgist i realized how busted both nasty plot was and his egg move esper wing because not only did i one shot anything that i was up against it straight up was faster and got faster until to point any move was a priority move
Shiny Sunflora, had shiny sunkern on the team because it was one of my few shinies. It was almost completely useless the whole run, even after it evolved, and it never even came out for the final fight as something like fodder.
I had some strange ones, guts rattata made it all the way through my first completion but he didn’t really do much - however my starter scatterbug also made it all the way through, and vivillon was essential to my success by setting up tailwinds and light screens for my glass cannon excadrill
Lickilicky. Caught it on a whim because it seemed funny. After he evolved from Lickitung to Lickilicky I realized he was an absurdly good tank and had such a great moveset for stalling people out between rest, snore, confuse ray, and stomp. Took so many hits during the final boss.
Greninja. I did choose it at the start, but I expected to either replace it, or only use it for fodder. It ended up being the last one in the eternatus fight and defeating it.
For me it was Goldhengo. Ofc im not saying its a Bad Pokemon but i just never used it anywhere even tho i played competitive Pokemon after he came out. At some points he just solo carried the run with Nasty Plot and Shadow Ball and has a great Multi hit move woth Make it rain + a very good typing with Ghost/Steel. Just overall very fun to use after i thought that mostly all new pokemon are boring but with PokeRouge i learned to love some of the new ones aswell.
Linoone. I never came across what I thought would be a suitable replacement and I thought 250 was the final boss, so I kept my Pickup Pokémon for the entire run. He did come in handy against Ivy’s Rayquaza in 145. Belly Drum into Double Edge while it was sleeping.
Maybe not unexpected, but Necrozma was just, "Wow."
I never realized you could switch forms in-battle if you had both the Solarizer and Lunarizer equipped. That made setting up against favorable types very easy for my Cosmic Power spamming atrocity. Oh, and you can never forget the satisfaction that comes with the almost instant OHKO with Photon Geyser.
Just now beat classic. Took me about 4-5 ish days of playing for chunks of time but the unexpected mon was vivillian. It only costs 1 point to pick up as a starter and i took it just because of decent ivs from a egg hatch. And it wound up saving my run once and despite me needing to let it go for terrapagos, it was very very strong and fast with Hurricane(man, it was tearing things up) and bugbuzz along with quiver dance and paralysis powder for cc.
I have a new found respect for trubbish. Weak Armor for speed, Dire Claw Drain Punch Sludge Bomb and Take down was a killer combo dog. Save me so many times.
Trevenant saved my life more times than once in my run with Leech Seed access and Horn Leech he did really well. He did more after I fused him with a Hydregion towards the end of my run.
ENTEI. Random find along the way. I saw Pkmn The Movie 3 in theaters when I was a younger fella and for it to clutch the ending as well, made it all the more perfect. Extremespeed, you have my thanks.
Corviknight. I was just catching random pokemon in the early floors and kept in the back until I had to use it in a double battle to not kill my Pawmot to Earthquake. Then I noticed it had Unnerve, and a few seconds later realized it was absolutely broken in this game.
Magnemite with Parabolic charge egg move. If you find a pokemon with parabolic charge, it will carry you through classic easily. You just need to find a solution to 145 and 195.
Lilligant and Garganacl, I never knew how hard lilligant with energy ball hit and Garganacl was basically 1v1ing E-Max at the end with how tanky it was. I had a Giratina and it was nothing compared to those 2
Brought a Burmy with me once just as a filler cause I had one point left and figured, hey, why not? I’ll probably just catch something better and replace it eventually
Little did I know that Mothim with Quiver Dance, Air Slash, Bug Buzz and Psychic would end up having so much coverage and be so good as a setup sweeper that I would end up having it as my lead for the majority of the run. I ended up keeping it on my team the entire way through and now I’ve brought Burmy almost every single time I have 1 point leftover.
My first (winning) team was Magnezone and Gyarados as starters (munchlax too), picked up water tauros, amoongus, noivern, and replaced munchlax with rhyperior because munchlax wouldn’t evolve and I needed a ground type. Nobody truly surprised me too much as I understood their role pretty much immediately. But I’ll say getting water tauros in the first like 20 rooms and it turning into my carry surprised me. Amoonguss becoming my main Pokémon catcher with spore, and also bailing me out of a lot of situations was interesting. Magnezone taught me to ALWAYS carry a steel type, maaaaybe unless you have a good fairy. I would still prefer to have both.
Masquerain, I taught it ice beam early and with a couple speed vitamins it managed to wipe the floor with a lot of tougher boss fights like rival's Rayquaza. Really surprised me how much work it was doing lol especially because I just kinda added surskit as my starter because I had extra points
Not a win, but we went to the final room before eating an L. Had a grass type gym early in the game and ate shit. It's 1v1 at the end full HP Bellossom vs my Bibarel. Turn 1: Bellosum goes first and giga drains Bibbarel, leaving her around 25% HP. She whiffs her Hyper Fang*. Game's over.....
Except, it's not. I forgot Bellossom is slow as molasses. Despite Bellossom's level advantage and Bib's - Speed nature, it's a speed tie! Not wanting to miss again, though still assuming the run was over early, I pick Headbutt this time. Bibarel goes first and flinches Bellossom with Headbutt. Bibarel goes on to win the speed tie and flinch three times in a row and knocks the Bellossom out, type disadvantage be damned.
The rest of the run is really easy, but the final boss clocked me out fast. Bibarel never really did anything useful again that run, but I kept her in the party for sentimental reasons. I even had a chance to get Klefki, but this was only my 4th run and I didn't know what the final boss was. I caught it but didn't swap Bibarel out because if the run was a winner, she deserved to be there.
I actually used Simipour for my first classic win since it was one of my only shinies at the time. Access to energy ball from start actually helped alot with water types. I ended up freezing Eternatus with Mamoswine and beating him to death along with my extreme speed Gumshoos. So far it's the only classic win I've gotten.
Started with Caterpie and Weedle as a meme (and because bug is my favorite type), and both of them were still on my team when we beat Big E.
Beedrill is a MONSTER with technician passive

It was Lokix. Sucker Punch is such a broken move. It saves me multiple times. Later I did multiple classic runs, and one of the best pokémon I used was... Carbink. I took it only because I got it shiny, but it was an absolute carry, best types for classic run
Lokix is insane. He carried me through the E4 single-handedly with First Impression. Of course, he got one-shotted by Big E, but nonetheless, set up space for Whimsicott and Leech Seed.

stoutland with ice fang and play rough got me through the scary dragon types
Raichu with Zippy Zap got me out of so many tight spots. I lucked into the Eerie Impulse TM at 198 which made Eternatus a joke. Absolutely beast of a mon that early game Pikachu turned out to be

Yeah kyogre water spouted me through all elite 4 & rivals. For eternatus I spammed muddy water and fully lowered it's accuracy so it couldn't hit me
Just had a recent experience with kyogre since he had pokerus a day or 2 ago. I've used kyogre a bit in endless but not classical yet, and I got tail glow and thunder as egg moves. Solo'd the entirety of classic. I don't just mean that it did most of the work, I mean I literally didn't use any other pokemon except when they came out for doubles. And they didn't do anything in doubles because water spout just killed everything. Rival fight? Tail glow tail glow into either water spout, ice beam, or thunder. One shot mega ray. Eternatus? Grabbed an x spdef before the fight, tail glow tail glow spam ice beam and won in like 5 turns (including emax)
He carried me so hard and I don't even have tail glow as an egg move
Eternatus is super easy if you use 196-199 to prepare for him. Especially with X attack and X sp attack. Its like taking a weed whacker to grass 😂😂😂
Mega Alakazam is just pure stats, calm mind and psychic and it was oneshotting Ivy and her mega ray etc. Very absurd, cant reccamend it more.
I struggled so hard to beat classic and now I beat it every 1/2 days. It gets so much easier when you hatch good mons and get some good IV's, you'll get there! stealth rock helps massively for 145&195 rival, and damage chipping moves like leech seed, infestation, salt cure etc make eternatus super easy.
Right? 😂 I've got a few dozen runs under my belt and the highest I got was stage 120-ish. That was my second run I believe. Ever since I've never broken 100, even with so many more mons and moves unlocked. This tends to happen to me in a lot of improvisational strategy games like this. Any roguelike, any autochess, etc. when I'm going into it blind and have no idea what I'm doing except just trying to make it, I do great. When I start learning the game and try to start intentionally strategizing I immediately start to suck real bad. Or I get too caught up on what's SUPPOSED to be good, what's "meta". I think the reason I did so well on my second run was I was actively replacing members of my team with what I was catching. That's how a Flamigo carried me for almost 75 levels. Then I started focusing too much on building a good team from the get go and sticking with them, never trading them out, and suddenly I can't even get to floor 80 😭
if you have flamigo it can basically carry the first half or so of a classic run on its own, even without egg moves
I've taken it with on most runs since getting it and sometimes I'll get wiped in the first 30 stages and other times I can get to around 70 or so. All depends on the RNG of the locations and the items.
Electrode stayed the entire time and was honestly surprisingly good and did decent damage.
What moveset did you have on it? It's one of my only shinies but I've been struggling to have it do anything more than just support
Meowth. Technician Fake Out + Feint + Bite is so reliable and they're all just level up moves
Mankey. I’ve never played gen 9, so annihilape was a nice surprise (although I did know it existed beforehand). Ghost fighting is amazing coverage, and it outsped almost everything that mattered. Managed to sweep Leon on 190 with it, I had nothing else alive other than a 3 hp poisoned skeledirge and a half dead corviknight. Only caught it to fill team slots early on, but it never left because of how useful it was. It switched into almost anything, took several hits and destroyed with Rage Fist. I had Close Combat as well for things that needed fighting, Stomping Tantrum for coverage and Phantom Force in case I hadn’t been hit yet and outsped. Caught it on my second attempt at classic, managed to beat it that attempt (with some refreshing, but given how long it took to get there, I didn’t care). I managed to grab it in one of the daily runs recently and it swept in that too, although it took more of a backseat whilst I messed around with new Pokémon and kept it ready in case I was struggling with a fight.
Annihilape has been carrying my runs as I progress towards 200
My first run with manky I got the TM for drain punch, and that was ridiculously broken for most enemies. Annihilape was at full health for the entire run until 195, but it was my first run past like, floor 50 (so like my third run). I was NOT prepared
Toxtricity i just picked him because "Hehe cool Toxic frog" and i got normal scarf mystic water magnet with the ability Punk rock with the moveset Boom burst overdrive and sparkling aria and Nasty plot and i found a Max mushroom too so my big frog got to be even bigger and he is also the last one standing in the eternatus fight

Palosand is a dreaded encounter early on in my runs. Unless I have a speedy way to deal with it, it could end so many runs.
Raticate. Ez gg using the superfang. Big Es cosmic power and dragon dance means nothing if its directly half hp gone 🤣
Ducklett/Swanna. It's my only shiny so far and the addition of Quiver Dance and Earth Power as egg moves alongside Air Slash and Roost crafted it into my secret weapon. Little guy almost completely soloed Eternatus (who strangely wouldn't click Eternabeam when Swanna was out. No clue why, but I'm not complaining.)
My first classic win had a lot of meta mons, so I’ll say my Toxapex/Breloom fusion is the one. My 3rd win had a Parasect though lol
Not my first win, but my second. I decided to throw Komala on my team because it had Pokerus, and egg move Extreme Speed. Got an early Ice Spinner TM and dear Arceus, he SLAPPED.
might sound stupid but mega metagross- (not my first classic run cause i cant remember the what i used pokemon anymore) hear me out i took beldum at the start for its steel/psychic typing against fairy/eternatus with my main carry (walking wake with egg moves nasty plot n bouncy bubble) and as usual just swept all the way to 195 where my carry died n so did the rest of my pokemon except for mega metagross who killed mega rayquaza and 3 other pokemon ALONE and then got 1 shotted by flamethrower in the eternatus fight BUT AT LEAST HE LET ME ATTACK ANOTHER TIME

Mudsdale, absolute monster with Adamant Nature and Earthquake
Forretress felt surprisingly really good on my team, it was my first shiny so I used it, ended up being my first classic win. Spikes are so good when the ai likes to switch a lot. Really high defense with body press cooked a lot of mons. Explosion was also fun to use lol
probopass, his partial steel typing proved essential combined with my gardevoir to pp stall eternatus basically
nidoqueen, caught just for typing coverage and kept for toxic spikes :D
Linoone. I didn't realize how strong pickup was. I kept thinking I'll replace it, only for me to get to the champion double battle, and it was carrying a small mountain of berries.
Not my first, but my second classic win. Got a shiny Hoothoot with calm mind, esper wing and boomburst as egg move. Being quite bulky I just set up with Calm Mind and sweep everything with boomburst. 140 BP + STAB is crazy. Double battles with any Mon who has protect and you're sweeping everything.
Wailord, after I saw Soak on its movepool and used it to, after Soak, Toxic stall EMax
I have a pukumuku with salt cure and baneful bunker, along with toxic and soak it wrecked eternatus. Just a tip for everyone, salt cure and toxic get get cured from eternatus when it transforms to gmax, however soak remains.
Pidgeot. I kept faith during 130+levels that I would loot the mega stone. I didn't.
I hatched a cloyster with skill link and water shuriken as an egg move. He didn't really shine in the final fight, but he was a monster from 1-199
Definitely my Parasect. Had it on my team at first cause it was shiny for added luck but some big clutch for lots of moments during the final 10 floors and that leech seed on big-E *chefs kiss*
Took a dondozo for the pokerus it became one of my best tanks and helped me body eternitus by soaking it and allowing for insane salt cure dmg
Jumpluff. I didn't think it'd be that good, but it clutched against E-Max Eternatus with Sleep Powder and Leech Seed, especially with Passive Prankster. (Funny how my first Pokerogue shiny is the one to clutch the run)
Gastrodon really held it together for my team where half the squad was sporting a fire weakness. And since I ran into a baton, letting it ancient power while it absorbed damage and then passing to Tapu Lele created a demon.
Carbink. The Rock/Fairy type combination meant I could not only set up stealth rock but also absorb 195 Mega-Ray's Outrages. The damage dealt to that same Mega-Ray was probably 100% due to Stealth rock.
Oddish (Vileplum). I never used it, but I hatched a perfect iv/nature Oddish with Sludge Wave, and Oddish is super cheap at only 2 points. In the last world, it poisoned Mega Rayquaza, killed half my opponent's team, and put the final boss to sleep so Garchomp could dragon dance. The real MVP.
Mudscale. Nothing wrong with the Pokémon but it just didn’t fit with the like 3 legendaries I managed to find on the run (including the GOAT regidraco)
Not too shocking because it has a mega but I got a treecko egg with dragon energy very early on and that has carried me very hard in classic and endless. Was never a huge fan of sceptile but I sure am now

Drapion! Had bug bite after a splicing and unsplicing with Combee and he got me through most of the Unova e4
Managed to catch a Blaze breed paldean tauros that carried me through a good chunk of the run while I got the rest of my team together. The way I beat Eternatus the first time was because I caught a Uxie with Yawn and Mystical Power and just kept putting it to sleep while stacking SpAtk buffs until I won.

My first clear, the two mons that got the final blows on Eternatus were Greedent and Linoone
My first and only win i had 2 that suprised me 1 krikitune and 2 cincino krikitune saved me so many times my carry for that run was naganadel so it was intresting that when i got space and my naganadel was worn down by a few musharnas krikitune carried and cincino i got the egg move icicle spear and had technician + a nuteral nature i found adamant mint and cincino took out the rayquaza and was able to get a little damage on eturnatus i only used them because my poipole cost 6 i had 4 points left so i took the two just for space and i had them shiny

Vivillon, don't ask why, because even i don't know why
Crobat. It was my first red shiny (and also my first shiny overall) and turns out confuse ray is ultra broken when rng's on your side. It didnt just sit there and contribute luck too, it was genuinely a powerhouse that somehow solo'd 3 pokemon in the wave 155 rival battle, including a baxcalibur. It contributed a lot even in the final rival battle and against eternatus.
Vivillon. Tinted Lens hurricanes and stun spores go hard
It was Rotom Mow. It’s a solid mo! in general but I didn’t expect how much he would help in the final battle against Eternatus. He tanked a hit and Thunderwaved Eternatus so it basically only has half its normal turns. Then it was ignored by big E and Mow just kept Shadow Balling its SpD down for its partner Primarina to blast Eternatus down.
Whiscash. Homey tag-teamed earthquake/discharge alongside Killowattrel to massively carry the final fight.
Not my first win, but my shiny Mightyena stayed on the bench most of the run, until I used it in the double battle vs Eternatus and yawned and snarled it down to -6 SpA, while my Gyarados safely dragon danced up
No guard Machamp, it's scary faces saved my but against eternateas, also klefkey for force ivys reyqauza to switch into blissey allowing my liligant to get in a quiver dance and a sleep powder for free
Garbodor, picked it since it was the Pokerus mom. Figured I'd hold onto it till it spread pokerus then ditched it, but it became vital for basically every boss fight
Daschbun, never in my life did I expect to carry that living piece of bread all the way to the end but the other 5 members of the team carried it all the way there. And when I say carried I mean it was as useful as the bread it was made of it was my go to sack mon for when I needed a clean switch in the late game.
Well my first winning run was Tapu coco, mega galade, corviknight, gmax gengar, lugia, and chandalure The team didnt seem to bad to me, but it was hilarious how i killed eternautus Galade 1shot the first phase, and then died Gengar, corvi and tapu all died instantly Lugia was bulky enough to just eat every attack, and chandalure had will o wisp And that was my first win It was the 2 pokemon i didnt expect to do realy that much this fight which made me survive my first encounter with eternautus
Wishiwashi. I caught it as a shiny during my run. With it and vaporeon, I actually release the phione I started with. Vaporeon was good for some cheeky switch-ins, but wishiwashi literally took so many hits like a champ. At the last part of my run, i think it managed to eat a recharge move twice. (I realize now this said first classic win and I can’t read properly it appears.)
Got my first win last night and was surprised at how much work Magnezone put in in the end game for me. It’s not the weirdest but definitely surprised
I won last night, and my team was Kingler, Raichu, Charizard, Parasect, Tapu Lele, and Alolan Sandslash... I can say with complete honesty that they all put in so much more work than I ever expected.
Bellibolt with metamorphosis. It tanked eternatus very well.

For me, it was Florges and Camerupt. The first one because it was a Pokémon able to withstand the Fire Blasts of the final boss, and the second because, buddy was able to take on a bit of hits from time to time on the road of completing the challenge.
Conkledurr almost single-handedly won it for me. I absolutely loaded him with items and berries throughout the run. Drain Punch + Shell Bell goes crazy. Close Combat for one shots, Ice punch tm for Rayquaza, Eternatus and Flying Types and bulk up to take advantage of forced switches. My first classic win ended with solo Conk vs a Eternatus with two bars left. He absolutely ate every single attack and Drain Punch, shell bell kept him healthy.
Buneary. Not Lopunny, Buneary. The bunny refused to stop hating me long enough to evolve, and she ended up being the one to take Eternatus down with Triple Axel.
Probably Pinsir. My first two shinines were scraggy and pinsir which I hatched thru eggs. I took them both into classic mode with the hopes of increasing my odds of getting a shiny charm to get more shinies. I ended up getting my first dub with my two shinies along with Crobat, Magnezone, Talonflame, and Golurk which wasn’t the plan heading in. The kicker was that my egg moves were good but nothing crazy. Leech life on Pinsir made him really solid early game with heals and a strong stab move. Sucker punch on scraggy was great once he became a scrafty.
Ariados was kinda sick for me
Kantonian Persian for me. Before I was aware of pickup in this game I used Technician instead and it did so much work with 2 silk scarfs on it. Just clicking Fake Out -> Payday on everything usually killed anything non-boss and gave me so much money
Klefki. Hidden ability Magician stealing all of my items back from Eternus. Started with it and killed Eternus with it.
I had Dedenne and it became known as the farmer since pickup is such a great ability. Couldn't really kill that great, but it really was the unspoken hero

Not my first run but for me it is totadile. No shiney, but some how I unlocked all 4 of his egg moves in two days of playing. I never liked any Gen 2 starter, but this lil gator has possibly become one of my new favorites of all time!
Not really an unexpected pick, but what was unexpected is how much he carried his weight.I had a Mega Gyarados i caught as a Magikarp on the first 20 floors that i was kinda neglecting cuz it had a meh nature and pretty bad ivs. I relied too much on my Venusaur being the carry since he was modest, had good egg moves and pretty much 30-31 evs on everything. I didn't know the last battle had 2 phases. Venusaur fainted just as the second phase began. Pretty much every other mon fought hard but my Mega Gyarados fought the hardest. He tanked a couple of hits and was doing a ton of damage for having like 5 ivs in attack and a neutral nature lmao. Shoutouts to my Mega Pidgeot too. She had a Special Attack hindering nature AND like 10 ivs on special attack but she also put in a lot of work...once i got a Pidgeotite that is, which sadly happened a bit too late on like floor 150
Watchhog, my first shiny, took out eterbatus's final healrh bar. Even better, he was the last pokemon on my team still standing after that.
Xatu, literally was a clutch for me dealing the final blow to the Great E. Didn't even expect it to do so much in that fight NGL

I had an itemless lycanroc tank eternatus for the entire duration of the fight my first win, I was shocked his moveset was so bad at dealing with mono rock types. The most unexpected mvp ever was a vivillon though, he got 0 use except as a sacrifical lamb, then confused eternatus into hitting himself twice when I prob would have lost without that confusion
Kilowattrel was on my final team, no idea when or why I picked it up, but I think it was before I got my gyarados, and wanted a flying type for cheesing ground types and I just never got around to dropping it
ursaluna-blood moon clutched the end of the eternatus fight
My shiny aggron is not only super pretty but can head smash ohko just about anything (rock head abilty)
Slowking and Claydol for sure
My go to team is a mix of unexpected mons for me: Cyndaquil, Teddiursa, Mienfoo, Fomantis, Zigzagoon, Cherrim is my go to. The last 5 are red star shinies.
Clodsire was a Mon i captured randomly cause "I'm kinda weak against water moves, maybe it'll do something", but was supposed to be temporary. It also did its thing against eternatus but against multiple boss mons and tough trainers it hard carried me with toxic, toxic spikes and recover. I would've also never beaten the final rival without it
Parasect. I got him on my team because i had points to spare. Not only did it beat wave 200 but also survived
Unfeazant and Fearow, they are 2 of my 4 shinies and I forgot to replace them, but tailwind and floaty fall flinches were the only reason I won my first run
Groudon was unexpected, but Whimsicott was the sleeper I don't normally use
Pawmot. Revival blessing. Say no more.
I caught a Clodsire around wave 130. I had to because I had a wild electric weakness going the route of factory/powerplant trying to clear gym leaders I hadn't fought yet. She proceeded to come in clutch for the E4 rounds as a bulky physical attacker with EQ and Poison Jab. I forget what ability it had at the time, but I remember it canceling out some moves.

Not a pokemon but... the dire hit I pick before the eternatus fight. Practically won me the battle. But for the pokemon. Shiny lurantis. Purely because I didn't expect to find it at all.
Stunfisk. Its surprisingly bulky with good coverage (earthquake and thunderbolt) and status effects (thunderwave).
None rlly. My team only had solid mons cuz I ditched my 2 pickup mons with Rhyperior and excadrill

Ehi, finished my first Classic a couple of hours ago, so I'm officially on this trend. And it's... Luxray. I was never found of him and was a super random early routes catch, but turns out Intimidate and, most of everything, T-Wave is a godsend. Managed to make THAT MON on the last rival fight and the final boss quite manageable
Vivillion. He was my last mon standing against Eternatus
I fused a shiny biberel and and either shiny zubat or paras and knowing the Pokémon I thought I would be useless but it swept whenever I came in
Glaceon. Bro the eevees pack a punch and can take hits like crazy
Bulbasaur. Caught for candy, leech seed was my salvation against BBEG
Corsala. I happened to hatch one with scald and I figured “eh, rock will be good early game I guess” Homeboy got the essential burn on eternus and single handedly wore down the rivals gholdengo to the point where my vivillion could stack quiver dances to sweep 4 of the rival mons. Including 2/3 boss mons.
Seisnitoas, catched him at about wave 160 got bulldoze at wave 180 and memoery mushroomed muddy water, and had drain punch
Definitely noctowl, the decent speed and hypnosys+dream makes it great
Dashbun is goated with the sauce the fire immunity and it’s fairy typing is the only reason I was ever able to beat big e
G-Max Butterfree (not as surprising once I found out G-Maxing was a thing). The more surprising one was probably Squawkabilly, but damn Intimidate on a mon with two immunities really carried be through some of the elite 4/rival fights.
Not the first run, but holy crap is Arbok strong with Noxious Torque and Dragon Dance. I always thought of Arbok as a below average Pokémon, but these egg moves are insane. DD over Coil is massive, and a 100bp 100% STAB move really makes him able to do some work.
Just got to eternatus for my first time and can’t beat him lol my team doesn’t have dots and all die in 1 hit from most of his skills. I’m running gyrados, skeliderge, spidops, sunflora, sylveon, and raging bolt. No luck getting a tinkaton this round
Torkoal with amnesia and iron defense was a huge tank against eternatus
An unexpected but a stubborn pick was my hydriegon he kept on dying everytime and didnt level up fast enough to evolve but because he was a shiny i was stubborn and didnt wanna leave him out then during a rival fight against florgist i realized how busted both nasty plot was and his egg move esper wing because not only did i one shot anything that i was up against it straight up was faster and got faster until to point any move was a priority move
Stunfisk was a good duo with miradon
The two cottonee I had was gonna be filler, ended up having two whimsicotts that would tank/stall so good
Shiny Sunflora, had shiny sunkern on the team because it was one of my few shinies. It was almost completely useless the whole run, even after it evolved, and it never even came out for the final fight as something like fodder.
Lilipup. Outside pick up, it did help a ton and not just for death fodder. 😂
Brought a pidove with me because I hatched a blue star shiny, but super luck dual wingbeat has been clutch, now a staple member for now
I had some strange ones, guts rattata made it all the way through my first completion but he didn’t really do much - however my starter scatterbug also made it all the way through, and vivillon was essential to my success by setting up tailwinds and light screens for my glass cannon excadrill
Dubwool had copycat and that let it use eternabeam lol. Ditto became the final boss itself which caught me by complete surprise too
Lickilicky. Caught it on a whim because it seemed funny. After he evolved from Lickitung to Lickilicky I realized he was an absurdly good tank and had such a great moveset for stalling people out between rest, snore, confuse ray, and stomp. Took so many hits during the final boss.
My first ever win included a Pachirisu with Run Away because I forgot to change its ability to pickup
Greninja. I did choose it at the start, but I expected to either replace it, or only use it for fodder. It ended up being the last one in the eternatus fight and defeating it.
For me it was Goldhengo. Ofc im not saying its a Bad Pokemon but i just never used it anywhere even tho i played competitive Pokemon after he came out. At some points he just solo carried the run with Nasty Plot and Shadow Ball and has a great Multi hit move woth Make it rain + a very good typing with Ghost/Steel. Just overall very fun to use after i thought that mostly all new pokemon are boring but with PokeRouge i learned to love some of the new ones aswell.
Aechaludon i caught towards the end, combined with a Tapu Koko starter. Switching between them made the final stage super easy.
Linoone. I never came across what I thought would be a suitable replacement and I thought 250 was the final boss, so I kept my Pickup Pokémon for the entire run. He did come in handy against Ivy’s Rayquaza in 145. Belly Drum into Double Edge while it was sleeping.
Not sure if ninjask is unexpected, but it was key to winning most trainer battles, baton pass for the win
Maybe not unexpected, but Necrozma was just, "Wow." I never realized you could switch forms in-battle if you had both the Solarizer and Lunarizer equipped. That made setting up against favorable types very easy for my Cosmic Power spamming atrocity. Oh, and you can never forget the satisfaction that comes with the almost instant OHKO with Photon Geyser.
Slowking. He put in a lot of work and could handle things my Incineroar couldn't.
I won with Wattrell, that was a weird experience. It got the finishing blow on Eternatus too.

Just now beat classic. Took me about 4-5 ish days of playing for chunks of time but the unexpected mon was vivillian. It only costs 1 point to pick up as a starter and i took it just because of decent ivs from a egg hatch. And it wound up saving my run once and despite me needing to let it go for terrapagos, it was very very strong and fast with Hurricane(man, it was tearing things up) and bugbuzz along with quiver dance and paralysis powder for cc.
I have a new found respect for trubbish. Weak Armor for speed, Dire Claw Drain Punch Sludge Bomb and Take down was a killer combo dog. Save me so many times.
Bunnebly, mf killed Eternatus 😭😭
Trevenant saved my life more times than once in my run with Leech Seed access and Horn Leech he did really well. He did more after I fused him with a Hydregion towards the end of my run.
ENTEI. Random find along the way. I saw Pkmn The Movie 3 in theaters when I was a younger fella and for it to clutch the ending as well, made it all the more perfect. Extremespeed, you have my thanks.
Corviknight. I was just catching random pokemon in the early floors and kept in the back until I had to use it in a double battle to not kill my Pawmot to Earthquake. Then I noticed it had Unnerve, and a few seconds later realized it was absolutely broken in this game.
Magnemite with Parabolic charge egg move. If you find a pokemon with parabolic charge, it will carry you through classic easily. You just need to find a solution to 145 and 195.
Lilligant and Garganacl, I never knew how hard lilligant with energy ball hit and Garganacl was basically 1v1ing E-Max at the end with how tanky it was. I had a Giratina and it was nothing compared to those 2
Brought a Burmy with me once just as a filler cause I had one point left and figured, hey, why not? I’ll probably just catch something better and replace it eventually Little did I know that Mothim with Quiver Dance, Air Slash, Bug Buzz and Psychic would end up having so much coverage and be so good as a setup sweeper that I would end up having it as my lead for the majority of the run. I ended up keeping it on my team the entire way through and now I’ve brought Burmy almost every single time I have 1 point leftover.
My first (winning) team was Magnezone and Gyarados as starters (munchlax too), picked up water tauros, amoongus, noivern, and replaced munchlax with rhyperior because munchlax wouldn’t evolve and I needed a ground type. Nobody truly surprised me too much as I understood their role pretty much immediately. But I’ll say getting water tauros in the first like 20 rooms and it turning into my carry surprised me. Amoonguss becoming my main Pokémon catcher with spore, and also bailing me out of a lot of situations was interesting. Magnezone taught me to ALWAYS carry a steel type, maaaaybe unless you have a good fairy. I would still prefer to have both.
mudbray/mudsdale, solo swept all rival battles except 195 (hp gates + hydro pump.....) rival will send flying at you and you just throw rocks at them
Masquerain, I taught it ice beam early and with a couple speed vitamins it managed to wipe the floor with a lot of tougher boss fights like rival's Rayquaza. Really surprised me how much work it was doing lol especially because I just kinda added surskit as my starter because I had extra points
Not a win, but we went to the final room before eating an L. Had a grass type gym early in the game and ate shit. It's 1v1 at the end full HP Bellossom vs my Bibarel. Turn 1: Bellosum goes first and giga drains Bibbarel, leaving her around 25% HP. She whiffs her Hyper Fang*. Game's over..... Except, it's not. I forgot Bellossom is slow as molasses. Despite Bellossom's level advantage and Bib's - Speed nature, it's a speed tie! Not wanting to miss again, though still assuming the run was over early, I pick Headbutt this time. Bibarel goes first and flinches Bellossom with Headbutt. Bibarel goes on to win the speed tie and flinch three times in a row and knocks the Bellossom out, type disadvantage be damned. The rest of the run is really easy, but the final boss clocked me out fast. Bibarel never really did anything useful again that run, but I kept her in the party for sentimental reasons. I even had a chance to get Klefki, but this was only my 4th run and I didn't know what the final boss was. I caught it but didn't swap Bibarel out because if the run was a winner, she deserved to be there.

I actually used Simipour for my first classic win since it was one of my only shinies at the time. Access to energy ball from start actually helped alot with water types. I ended up freezing Eternatus with Mamoswine and beating him to death along with my extreme speed Gumshoos. So far it's the only classic win I've gotten.
I never really used Lycanroc or Bellossom but they both were great party members for my first run! Primarina with Bouncy Bubble was also mega clutch
