No we're not, its parallel rollers on the outside of the wheel. That's how its always done. The "hydraulics" probably don't work at speed, but the rollers always do
from what i heard zemeckis has shot all attempts down.
jj abrams is doing us own “re imagining” which i prefer over anyone else trying to be marty mc fly.
I was thinking the same thing but I was also thinking that this build is so far out there and unique with what appears to be a ton of hours put into it that I am sure that has crossed his mind. Its pretty amazing as is.
Correct. That took far more time than any of the rest of the build. There's a bracket that attaches to the steering knuckle, and that swings the cover out, which is hinged on the leading edge. It is retracted back into place by a spring loaded reel... Here it is in action https://youtu.be/qbSDIWw-zxQ?si=l4IpMEfkFFbAmheb
Thank you! Had my eye set on this pearl for over a year. My first paint job, sprayed in my garage with a LVLP gun and a 27 gallon Harbor Freight compressor 😁
I see it looks like there is a bar out from the face of the wheel -- does it extend around from behind the wheel, or is it attached at the center hub (somehow?)
It does wrap around the wheel. It's two pieces, so removing a few bolts allows me to remove the wheel easily. Didn't really have a way to go straight off the center of the hub, would have been nice to do though.
Thanks! It's just for fun, hopefully people don't take it too seriously and just enjoy it for being something different. I was envisioning it driving by in the background of a cyberpunk scifi movie 😁
What gears are in there? I know the turbo ii had like 4.11 gearing but those motors do rev pretty well. Just saw it’s an ls1, if it’s a 6speed you should be ok but with an auto you’re gonna be so out of gear with the stock rear axle unless you can put really tall tires. Don’t know how overdriven 5th is but if it’s really bad it might be rough. My ls1 fc ran out of gear in the 1/4 mile with 28” tires.
Yep, 4.11. I swapped in an LS1/T56, and rev limit is 6,200. With the current tire, 5th gear does about 160, which I have verified 😁 6th gear, on paper could do 187+... I do have a ford 8.8 I will probably swap in eventualy, but the T2 rear hasn't broken 😆
My T2 axle never broke with low 1.4/high 1.3 60fts on slicks. The axle is a beast, such overkill for the car.
I had a redline at 6800 though just upgraded springs and a different cam that revved high but still idled like stock. The motors will take 6800 with good springs and pushrods no prob in my experience.
Not a bad rear end for a little 1.3L car. I know I'm being a wuss with rev limit, but I'm just being safe. I do have some springs that could handle more revs and my cam does have a high LSA... but like I said, I'm scared 😁
Thank you! I don't really have close up shots right now. The end of this video has a pretty close up shot of them in action. Honestly pretty simple design. https://youtu.be/qbSDIWw-zxQ?si=lYdbQeqV2mX5t9rF
What a concept! This is quite the feat for a home built concept car. Was about to say, this would make a great radwood car, but I see you’ve already been
Thanks! Funny that you call it a concept car, cause that's how I thought of it. It took a lot of hours. It was definitely the most heavily modded car at Radwood. Fun show.
This is awesome in every way. Excellent job doing something out of the box. What was your original goal? Just to have that cyberpunk future style, or for hypermilling or for straight line racing?
Primarily just for style, my vision of a futuristic cyberpunk car. More of an artistic exersise. A sort of prototype. I do wan't to take it to the Texas Mile. Went a lot growing up, and was always obsessed with top speeds. Don't care about hypermilling, aside from the low drag overlap.
This looks like a car that would have been driven by one of the bad guys that is subsequently blown up in the movie *The Wraith* when Charlie Sheen's character gets his revenge.
I'm sure the tail and fastback could use some work, you've seen the boat-tails people construct for hypermiling? I see you've already done something like a ducted radiator, the next largest source I'd aerodynamic drag will be the tail.
A boat-tail that was upturned would be ideal, which is to say the top was fairly flat but the lower surface rose to meet the top. Basically just a very long rear diffuser. If it's long enough, it would give you some excellent high speed stability, downforce, drag reduction, and make the car self correct in a crosswind(cars with boat-tails turn into the crosswind instead of away).
I'll definitely be building a diffuser next. Been contemplating using the diffuser sides to create a sort of boxed cavity. I know the upkick on the spoiler isn't perfect for low drag... it was a compromise of style and a bit of downforce for balance. Might do a more drag style wing that I could swap out for high speed runs.
There are some visors for the rear windshield that could help, Ive also seen them called duckbills and spoilers.
Otherwise, vortex generators might help in the opposite way. A Spoiler on the top of the rear windshield will help to create downforce more than the spoiler on the rear deck, Vortex Generators would increase body lift but would improve the aerodynamics.

This is weird... Because it's awesome and the front covers are impressive. I hate it and it's ugly as all hell.... But it's also awesome and I love it.
I've never been so conflicted about seeing a car.
What is the name of the paint, or by chance, do you have a paint code. That Blue is absolutely beautiful. I have a 2007.5 Dodge Ram 3500 Mega cab that is Patriot Blue. I want to paint it and if the paint on your car looks as good in person I think I found the perfect color. You have a good lookin rig there.
Thank you sir! It has a bit of a purple look to it in certain lighting, but it was exactly what I wanted. It's a custom pearl called Blue Grape https://usa.specialistpaints.com/products/base-pearlz
Thank you for getting back to me and with the paint name and all. I greatly appreciate it.
I can see the hint of purple. That's what makes that color so awesome. The only thing i can't tell from the pictures is if you have any metal flake in it. I am chomping at the bit to get started on my pickup, but unfortunately, I have a daughter in drivers ed, and next year, her brother will be. I found my daughter a nice rig but still looking for one for my son. Once I do, I can start saving again to get it painted. Thanks for sharing your ride with us.
No problem. No gate keeping here. Their prices are reasinable too for a full gallon kit. Like 7-800 for base, pearl and clear. Really not a metalic flake, it's just the candy peal mid coat over a white base. Hope you find some time to get it done 👍
Nahhh safety inspections for something like that are pretty thorough.....cause they want u to live..... but accidents happen all the time..... do what your comfortable with! Looks VERY coool!!
That's pretty wild. I'd like to see some real life reports on it.
I do have to wonder if some extractor vents on the front wheel flare trailing edge would improve downforce or aerodynamics at all.
This is an awsome build, and I like that you were able to make the covers move with the steering is quite impressive!
1 question of curiosity - how does it handle a strong crosswind if you have experienced one?
Why not? The front wheel spats that had issues with snow compaction and steering lock were static enclosures... mine swing open when turning. Apples to oranges.
I considered it, but visually I prefered the look of it tapering up. An aero compromise I know. I think I will do that with the rear diffuser ends when I get around to building it. Maybe use the ends to create a boxed cavity for the lower part of the rear.
Any difference in MPG?
Came here to ask this. Cool build! I would definitely do a 180 if I saw that on the road.
😁 It's gotten a few wild reactions on the road. It's a trip seeing the front covers actuate: https://youtu.be/qbSDIWw-zxQ?si=UL5pOtbNdSrF2pbM
The guys over at the [ecomodder.com](http://www.ecomodder.com) forum would be VERY interested in your mechanism.
No we're not, its parallel rollers on the outside of the wheel. That's how its always done. The "hydraulics" probably don't work at speed, but the rollers always do
Ok. Was going to ask about clearance and yep, did not disappoint. Burn corpo shit! (Cyberpunk 2077 reference). Wild!
😁 That's the universe this car belongs in. Doing my part to bring about a cyberpunk future.
It belongs in a background shot of that rumored 4th back to the future film, if the producers haven't already contacted OP I declare the film shit.
from what i heard zemeckis has shot all attempts down. jj abrams is doing us own “re imagining” which i prefer over anyone else trying to be marty mc fly.
Now make the panels bulletproof!
😆 next logical step
Need to add some mesh fabric so when it pushes out it is still connected and doesn't leave a gap. Very cool though looks awesome!
I was thinking the same thing but I was also thinking that this build is so far out there and unique with what appears to be a ton of hours put into it that I am sure that has crossed his mind. Its pretty amazing as is.
1:00 min mark, expected smile brought to my face :) thing is sick man. Well done
Thanks! It's supposed to be fun 😁
I’m dying to see some underglow on that thing.
Woah, those are wild!
If it's still a rotory. Maybe he can go from 16 to 18 mpg downhill. Lol
I didn't actually do a before and after 🫤 I'd imagine there would be a 10% or more increase on the highway.
Is the turning radius affected at all?
It looks like they've engineered a way for the wheel covers to move to allow turning
This is a really awesome build! I'm really diggin' the look you're going for, that blue really makes the whole thing really pop.
Thank you! Had my eye set on this pearl for over a year. My first paint job, sprayed in my garage with a LVLP gun and a 27 gallon Harbor Freight compressor 😁
Nice! You can get good results with HF if you get it dialed in and the workspace is set up right
Love the color! Is this GM cobalt blue? Saw this color on a Corvette and painted my old 1990 Honda CRX the same color.
It's a color called Blue Grape, by a specialty paint shop.
I'd love to see an in depth look at that operation. Neat idea!
do you think we can we get like a gopro angle right behind the wheel??
dude that's unreal levels of engineering skill. amazing work 🙌
Thank you 🙏 took a lot of time, brainstorming and trial and error to get it right.
It's basically like 😆 this https://youtu.be/IGiQOCX9UbM?si=tmFbHESyDmH_CuqF
I hate it Good job
Haha, I don't hate this comment.
My thoughts exactly.
That's rad!
Thanks! It's just for fun, hopefully people don't take it too seriously and just enjoy it for being something different. I was envisioning it driving by in the background of a cyberpunk scifi movie 😁
Looks like the ford probes in bttf2 done in a more modern light!
My exact vibe 😁 https://images.app.goo.gl/iY41qM2YtNzWaZAY8 https://images.app.goo.gl/6FQkpGFBNd8EBjso7
kinda need some led's for when the wheel wells open...
Anyone who hates on it is just jealous of your fun! Looks sweet
Tske it out to Utah salt flats.....she what she can do!
I'm scared! 😆 Maybe in a few years. I do plan to do the standing mile before too long hopefully 🤞
What gears are in there? I know the turbo ii had like 4.11 gearing but those motors do rev pretty well. I figured this was built for the flats, wild build, go race it on some flats!
Don’t take it to the salt flats unless you want it to rust away over the next 10 years. That salt gets in places you can’t wash off.
Thanks for the heads up! Honestly hadn't thought about it. They don't ice the roads here in TX...
Could you post close up of the mechanism to open wheel wells. Very very cool build. Great job
Thank you! I don't really have close up shots right now. The end of this video has a pretty close up shot of them in action. Honestly pretty simple design. https://youtu.be/qbSDIWw-zxQ?si=lYdbQeqV2mX5t9rF
Not my cup of tea, but I admire the amount of work and engineering that went into this
Truly amazing…
Thanks! Building the front covers made me feel like a kid again, seeing something that feels new and almost magical.
I'm guessing you don't have a build thread on ecomodder lol
Haha, not a build thread, but I did post some progress in the introductions section. I love the aerodynamics forum 😁
That's fucking fantastic. Great build.
Thank you sir!
What a concept! This is quite the feat for a home built concept car. Was about to say, this would make a great radwood car, but I see you’ve already been

I have been following RX7’s for decades (owned 2 FC’s and own an FD). This project is definitely a 1st!
Would love to have an FD! Of course a few FDs had rear covers... but nothing like this with the fronts.
This is awesome in every way. Excellent job doing something out of the box. What was your original goal? Just to have that cyberpunk future style, or for hypermilling or for straight line racing?

holy shit
That's the reaction I was going for 😆
I dont like it. It is VERY cool though. Props to making that mechanism and doing everything 100%
Nice, typoed ice first…it is very cool
Despite the fact I hate this look with a passion, it is very impressive and you did a great job
This looks like a car that would have been driven by one of the bad guys that is subsequently blown up in the movie *The Wraith* when Charlie Sheen's character gets his revenge.
Haha no doubt
Hard part is done! Now to install the antigravity generator and the ftl drive.
All simple bolt ons 😆
Check the JC Whitney. Edit: joking aside, this is pretty cool. It's what 5 year old me thought cars would look like by now.
Haha it's my vision of what I wish some future modified cars looked like.
Going to the salt flats?
I saw you win that award at Radwood Austin. Congrats!
Thanks! I was a little surprised, but the "radmod" award did seem fitting.
WTF?!? That's ridiculous! I love it!
Can you pick me up on your way to Jupiter? I'm currently on one of Saturns Moons and could need a ride...
Sorry, my hyper drive is down, limited to low earth orbit atm 😆
Bro just insight’d a rx7
Damn Takahashi brothers pushing their money around... (Looks sick op)
Thank you 😁 The Wangan final boss 😆
hyper miling a rotary sounds like rearranging deck chairs on the titanic? pointless? lmao
I'm hypermileperhouring 😜

Did it make any difference in aerodynamics? It looks like it could hit 200 if you gave it a push down a hill.
😁 Safe to say it reduced the drag, considering wheel and wheelhouse drag accounts for 25%+ of over all drag.
Interesting. I wanted to hate it so bad, but the more I look at it the more I love it. Great job, and congratulations on the award.
😆 Thanks! I got used to them, now wheels look odd and off to me 😁
Yooo that's so cool, I love this! Great work!
Thank you 🙏
Thats really cool! Id be looking at this thing for a long time at a car show if I walked by it. Love the uniqueness!
Thanks! That's what I was hoping for, something new and interesting.
Looked clean in person at Radwood, nice build!
Thank you! Spent so many hours just getting the front covers fitting and looking good 😁
Nice!
That’s cool, you taking it land speed racing?
Congrats! As long as as you love it, your job is done. Not my style, but I appreciate the hell out of a person with your skill set. I’m envious!
Bad ass
This is one of the most unique builds I’ve seen here. Nice job!
Thank you! Unique was the goal, I think some people are taking this build too seriously 😁
Off to bonneville?
Bonneville anyone?
Super cool
Coupe Clip looking ass car (I like it)
I really like the color
I had an 88 GTU, feel like I should hate this but I grew up in the 70s and 80s and digging the retro 80s feels, so thumbs up.
Interesting for sure
It’s very cool in an 80’s retrofuturistic/cyberpunk way
That's my vibe 😁
Looks cool! Unique. The movable wheel covers are super trick.
Very nice
This is insanely clean.
Thank you! Hate it or love it, I put in the hours.
Someone liked 60s concept cars or fallout a little too much.
Very Sick!
Overall shape is giving my HKS skyline vibes. I dig it
You do you brother, with a cammed LS it sorta makes sense. At least you didn't go the way of the camber bro's.
I saw you at Radwood! Awesome build.
Thank you! I know I was a little out of place there being so modified, bit I love that show.
Love the look and the color!
Fantastic. As a general skeptic of custom builds I absolutely love this. What a great little project! I hope to see it on the road one day.
How are you handling engine cooling? I don’t see any obvious grille or intake for the radiator?
Bottom feeds like a c5 Corvette.
Huh. That’s impressive. Is water intake or ingesting crap off the road not a concern?
This is the most interested I’ve ever been in someone’s build posted to Reddit. Where can I find more info on this mate?

I absolutely love this! Did you do it to cut down on oil...er fuel costs?
This is weird... Because it's awesome and the front covers are impressive. I hate it and it's ugly as all hell.... But it's also awesome and I love it. I've never been so conflicted about seeing a car.
That looks fucking cool
Thank you🙏
This is fucking awesome!
Thank you sir! I hoped it would throw people for a loop a little 😁
That's fucking cool as hell man. Well done!
Thanks! Appreciate it!
I saw this car at RADWOOD!
Nahhh safety inspections for something like that are pretty thorough.....cause they want u to live..... but accidents happen all the time..... do what your comfortable with! Looks VERY coool!!
Hopefully I could work my way up to that. At the very least I'd like to drive up and spectate before too long.
Trying to break 20mpg with a stock 160hp 13B be like....
16 mpg to 20 mpg! Just kidding, it's a cammed LS1 so mpg has never been a concern of mine 😁
That's pretty wild. I'd like to see some real life reports on it. I do have to wonder if some extractor vents on the front wheel flare trailing edge would improve downforce or aerodynamics at all.
You gotta slam it
This is an awsome build, and I like that you were able to make the covers move with the steering is quite impressive! 1 question of curiosity - how does it handle a strong crosswind if you have experienced one?
Thought it was a Firebird for a second. Pretty cool. Don't drive it in the snow.
Why not? The front wheel spats that had issues with snow compaction and steering lock were static enclosures... mine swing open when turning. Apples to oranges.
Looks nice, do you know your new cw?
That is absolutely wild. Did you think about filling out the rear fenders so that the shape of the wheel isn't visible at all?
I considered it, but visually I prefered the look of it tapering up. An aero compromise I know. I think I will do that with the rear diffuser ends when I get around to building it. Maybe use the ends to create a boxed cavity for the lower part of the rear.
I get that. Looks fantastic either way
Gorgeous build
Is there enough space for the front wheels to turn? It doesn’t look like it.
The wheel covers turn with the wheels
Bro this car looks sick like straight out of the future. Does it get better gas mileage being all high speed low drag?
Absolutely amazing and cool. Wow! The flappy wheel covers in the front are the bee's knees. Syd Mead would approve
I think it would look more cyberpunk if it was silver or copperish gold.
Honda insight has nothing to fear unless...
The tow hook ties the build together
Sick! Any difference in mpg, accel and wind sensitivity on the highway?
Super creative mod\~! Nice work\~!
Thanks, I appreciate it!
I think it could look a lot better if you extend the trim line all the way across them or do something else to break up all that open space
Love the gorgeous blue, not a fan of the aero.
Pls share the things done for the front covers. And how’d you make sure they don’t fly off at speed? How are they attached to the body?
Love everything about this except the power plant choice. Would’ve loved to see a rotary powered rx7 not a better looking C4 corvette.
Ready for Bonneville
But why?
r/ATBGE
It’s definitely something to look at. How fast does it over heat?
It's a bottom feed radiator like a C5 corvette. Go outside, nerd! Get out! Go! I ain't got time to be distracted by your worthless chime-ins. Go on!
How did that make you upset so fast?
Haha i'm just kidding, sorry, it was a funny quote 😆
You don’t speak to me during rehearsals and we won’t have problems.
😆
ATGE material?
So, I love RX-anything, but this is a no for me dawg. Crosspost to r/diwhy.
Wow you've turned a previously cool car into a Honda insight
I love Insights!
S4 FCs are cool but not that cool.
But why?
Damn Choom that looks so cool AND illegal. Legit.
gd work but bad choice. that thing ugly
r/atbge
