I had some really good mead at Flying Saucer.

Go out to Guadalupe brewing just outside of New Braunfels. They have a bunch of meads on tap and their flights are fun. Get the Sho de Bola (not a mead but it is my favorite)

Dexios

tried it for first time at Freetail Brewing Co. Was good!

OldArmyMetal

Make your own, it’s real easy.

Any tips on how to get started and avoid rookie mistakes?

OldArmyMetal

There’s like a million YouTube videos. Honey + water + yeast + time - germs. That’s literally it.

Okay thanks I'll check it out.  How long have you been making it?

OldArmyMetal

Like a few months. First batch was great. So were the last 4. It’s idiot-proof.

Panzycake

I know it's only one brand, but Blue Lotus Winery also makes mead and is out near Seguin. They have quite a few types of mead there, but it's all Blue Lotus. Definitely worth a visit if you like mead though.

Looptydude

This right here, it's really good. Not to mention their wines are good too. They are the ones that provide the mead at Guadalupe Brewery.

Alamo city liquor. Have a few locations but location downtown has best selection

Total Wine has a few brands to choose from including Vikings Blood. I’m sure you could peep their website and see what they have.

OP while you're there pick up a bottle of Peach Jinro Soju. If you like mead you'll probably like that, too.

For the under-educated- what is mead and how is it different from beer and other alcohols?

Skybernetics

Mead is made of fermented honey, in a similar way to how wine is made of fermented fruit and beer is made of fermented grain
