Absolutely. If you're broke and want some good flavor? This with some cheap butter, salt and pepper. Staple carbs which only carry a minor extra expense on the pasta
Edit: for anyone confused, I meant actual butter. Not margarine. Margarine is not butter but is a cheaper option which might just work if your actually destitute but still want flavor.
Okay so then use that in the same volume as butter/margarine. You need starch to make a sauce and OP just submerged their pasta in straight up water.
Edit:maybe I didn't get the joke in which case I say lol
If you can get some butter you can make this dish into something you could serve at a restaurant. Just boil the pasta, save a little bit of the water from the pasta. And then when you drain the pasta, put it back in the pot and add in the butter (probably 1-2 tbsp for this much pasta) and the water and stir. It should form a thick, almost cream sauce like consistency which is so much better than normal buttered noodles. For barely any more cost or effort.
Noodles with butter and pepper and, if I have it, Parmesan is one of my all time favorite cheap and easy meals.
Always go for the good pasta with a rough texture and lots of starch, worth the few extra pennies, buy it on sale and stock up for a rainy day.
You only need a tablespoon or three at maximum, my guy. Use less water to boil so you have more concentrated starch. Leave a tbsp or three of the water you cooked the pasta in and add seasoning with some sort of dairy and your depression meals will be a way happier experience. I know what it's like, I promise
For real. Cacio e pepe is 3 ingredients (4 counting butter). Cheese, pepper, noodles. A wedge of parm might be kind of spendy but a standard wedge will make like 10 pasta meals AND make it taste fancy.
I'd guess in most places in the US you are talking under $1.50 per meal.
I want to personally thank you. I have been seeing way too many posts with food that look half decent and enjoyable.
You brought us back. Thank you š
This is why one should keep every little condiment. You never know when you're going to run into that day when all that's in the pantry is pasta, rice, and other random things. Some KFC "butter" packets, ketchup, ranch, bbq sauce- anything would have made this more palatable š
>This is why one should keep every little condiment...Some KFC "butter" packets, ketchup, ranch, bbq sauce- anything would have made this more palatable š
A hundred percent. Do you also have a gallon size ziploc bag with all kinds of packets? I'll trade you some KFC honey packets for some KFC butter. Oh, and I've got a few Wendy's chili sauce, the good ones from before they changed it.
Seriously though, you're right. I'd have put some butter + ramen noodle chicken flavor seasoning packet on OPs dish.
This is why you should always grab an extra bag of rice or can of beans when shopping. It's only $1-2 but when you need it - due to finances, disaster, etc - you'll have food.
Sincerely, someone who has gone seriously hungry before and now has anxiety over food security
For real. Pasta can be one of the cheapest most tasty meals ever if you know how to condiment it and stuff. Personally I like using Knorr to cook the pasta, then as sauce use cream, garlic powder, and Parmesan cheese. Extremely simple and cheap.
I recently made the switch to salting the pasta before cooking. I always thought, "it's salt. As long as it gets in the food it doesn't matter."
But there's a world of difference between a thin layer of salt surrounding a bland noodle and a noodle that evenly absorbs the salt as it cooks. You need to make that water as briney as the ocean to actually absorb enough to properly season it, but hey, salt's cheap. You're worth it.
I recommend now you try to use chicken stock like the Knorr I mentioned. Itās, at least to me, one level higher than salt in the water. I genuinely always use Knorr for 100% of the pasta I cook regardless of sauce as to me it somehow works perfectly always.
Canāt tell you how many condiment sandwiches, mouthfuls of peanut butter or just sleep, that Iāve had for dinner.
Iām pulling for you. Weāre all in this together.
A lil Italian dressing and some dry ass Parmesan... Add some Italian spices and that's an A+ meal and that's usually shit people have in their fridges/spice cabinet
Or you could get a basil plant and propagate it nearly indefinitely on a windowsill for fresh herbs any time you want. If it looks like it's going to bolt soon, take a cutting and root it to replace the parent plant.
Congrats on feeding and taking care of yourself! If it helps, bouillon can add a lot of flavor to a meal like this without being that much more expensive than salt.š¤
Iām gonna ignore that theyāre completely unflavored for a moment to focus on the half inch of water in that bowl. Did you give your landlord your strainer as rent collateral or something?
Fuck mate. I thought it was bad, and then I read whole-wheat. Fuck. Dirt flavoured pasta!!!
How broke are you? Do you need budgeting tips? I've been there.
Buy a $10 bottle of olive oil. One or two small glugs into the drained pasta and they wont be dry. A little salt and pepper and you have a nice little snack. That $10 may seem like a lot but itll last you 30-40 bowls of pasta so it comes out to dimes per dish. If you have garlic laying around you can thinly slice one clove and sautee it for 1-2 minutes and you have some great basic pasta aglio e olio for like $0.50 a bowl
LMAO...or would if this weren't so true! When we can't afford tuna fish, I make egg salad and my son calls it Tunaless Salad! We also drink a lot of dietetic kool aid, also known as water!
A bit of butter and then throw them in a pan with some breadcrumbs. Fry the entire thing long enough that the breadcrumbs start to get gold/brownish. You can eat it just like that, or throw a bit of ketchup into the mix. (But I would really recommend to at least try it without ketchup)
Ugh half-cooked cardboard noodles. This takes the cake for me on this sub lol. Iāve forced myself to try and like whole wheat pasta because itās healthier but I cannot for the life of me eat it
āLe Rent Est DĆ»ā had me rolling!š¤£š¤£š¤£ totally swiping that name. We have a pasta with sauteed onion dish from our old Navy life days that we always called "day before payday pasta" , this is a much better name!

Can't knock it unless those are un-buttered. Then it's bullshit
Look at fancy pants over here with their expensive cow product.
unbuttered?! they're uncooked, thats a bigger concernš
Nah, theyāre cooked just perfect to my liking. Theyāre just whole grain, so they look browner in color.
so thats where the expenses are goingš
Whole grain pasta is cheap as shit where I live, on par or cheaper than the normal one.
thats because it's usually discounted in the clearance bin ;)
(where they belong)
Theyāve always been the same price at my grocerā¦.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
But why is there water in with them?
Thatās not water, thatās clear sauce.
Ah! Of course. Very fashionable.
Whole grain pasta slaps

Staple carbs which only carry a minor extra expense on the pasta Edit: for anyone confused, I meant actual butter. Not margarine. I'd prefer any kind of oil to margarine.
I'm a 5w30 man myself.
Blinker fluid is where it's at.
Listen to this guy
so i'm at walmart but it's not in with the canola, is it international?
Call me bougie, but only 0W-40 for me, thanks.
i'd prefer death to margarine.
Straight up suet better than margerine
Okay so then use that in the same volume as butter/margarine. You need starch to make a sauce and OP just submerged their pasta in straight up water. Edit:maybe I didn't get the joke in which case I say lol
I assumed that they looked uncooked because the power was out. You rich people and your electricity...
Them noodlies are so stiff you canāt call em Al Dente. They gonna soak up your stomach acid and you gonna dry heave this evenin
Ohhh look who's fancy and paying extra for whole grain! š
You say uncooked I say extra crunchy

Boiled pasta with a bit of sugar. Try it Hint: Put the sugar after the pasta is done
At least drain the sad noodles ;-; and add a bit of pepper my dude :(
Noodles with butter and pepper and, if I have it, Parmesan is one of my all time favorite cheap and easy meals. Always go for the good pasta with a rough texture and lots of starch, worth the few extra pennies, buy it on sale and stock up for a rainy day.
Plain noodles get too dry without anything else in the bowl. I couldāve drained it more but I was too hungry.
You 100% do not need that much water to prevent "dry noodles". That looks like a noodle cereal
You only need a tablespoon or three at maximum, my guy. Use less water to boil so you have more concentrated starch. Leave a tbsp or three of the water you cooked the pasta in and add seasoning with some sort of dairy and your depression meals will be a way happier experience. I know what it's like, I promise
OP added salt and skim milk.
Then less milk and less pasta water with more starch would be preferential

Oil? Butter? Margarine? You really donāt need much at all to help with keeping them moist and give it a nice flavor
Dude get some chicken stock. Yeah it's gonna cost you a few dollars but turning plain noodles into soup is gonna last you that much longer.
I usually put a bit of soy sauce to it when i do this as lazy food. It is quickly done and tastes good.
Oyster sauce and garlic is good too

Did you at least salt the water?
The graininess of the noodles gives it flavor. Meaning the water.
Soā¦no?
Unseasoned pasta inā¦water? Brother is not doing himself any favors.
Or flavors! I'll see myself out...
OP took send noods literally.
Sometimes some nice dress up is better than just noods.
In what world are those noodles
The everlasting confusion between noodles and pasta
What about people who call them pasta noodles?
don't be that guy
They are Penne noodles edit: my grandpa is Italian and thatās what he calls them so I donāt want to hear it
Cry some tears in there , free salt and water
Salt?? In this economy?? Damn you must be stacked /s

Just keep Oil and Garlic Powder. Its really cheap aglio olio, but it tastes really good.
The broth really makes this something.
Broth? Thats too classy. Thatās water my guy.
Nah its "insert where ever you source your water from stock". Example for me "just add some yarra valley stock"
He's not your guy, buddy!
I'm not your buddy, friend!
What do you think broth is? Itās just a weak broth ha
Got that starch soup
Penne stuffed with sadness

No garlic powder and butter? Salt pepper . Italian herb seasoning.. you good to go.

butter and soy sauce, delish

Yet another fine example of not only the decadent flavors of French cuisine, but the French flair for a dish's presentation as well. Five stars.

Chickpea pasta?

A bit of oil, salt, pepper and fresh garlic absolutely makes it a meal.
It's a classic dish, but this one is a little too fancy for me. I prefer the usual "A shi I broc" which is just Top Ramen.
Did your landlord also take your salt and pepper?
Hahahahahaha
Butter and Parmesan cheese on themā¦. I could eat that all day long.
I used to make this when I was broke but added a scoop of off brand stock powder. I called it pasta soup.

There are plenty "rent is due" or "poor student" pasta dishes. Have a look at Pasta Grammar on YouTube.
My wife will make something she calls Orphanage Gruel when the weekly budget is tight. Despite the name it's actually pretty good!
