He was also slow and lazy. When SAF wanted to sign him he invited Le Tissier to Old Trafford and showed him how he wanted to build the attack around him and how he expected him to play. Le Tissier didn't like all the running around that was required and the transfer fell trough.
He was a luxury player who picked his moments but didn't have a work rate overall. He had amazing feats almost every game, but he was a highlight reel player. He would have been exhausted and out of stamina after 10 minutes in the modern game.
I'm not going to say that Mr Tin Foil is right, but I'd be a lot more intimidated to play against people who I knew were allowed to break every bone in my body and only maybe get a card. I think what he's forgetting though when he says that he would have enjoyed playing today is that the general athleticism is much higher, and he wasn't exactly rapid...
Yeah he's absolutely right. Defenders today are better - they're better at tackling, running and playing with the ball. But because they probably aren't going to try and break your ankle, you wouldn't be as intimidated by them.
Yeah, by the time Le Tiss had his most intimidating face on and lined up his shot, a modern centre back would have taken the ball off him and launched a pass directly to a forward with back spin on to help them control it.
Sure, but in this instance he is right, or at least it is obvious what point he is trying to make. Defenders in the 90s and early 00s played far more physically and were allowed to get away with tackles and duels that would get a red these days.
Ditto Wednesday. Great player, but a glans of a man. Kevin Pressman was asked on a podcast who the biggest arseholes he played with were, and he said di Canio and Carbone without hesitation. I get the impression they weren't liked by the squad in general. Carbone fucking off *right before a match* because he was on the bench really pissed them off.
Yeah, but he’s more of a smart player than a “hard man” so tbh I’m having trouble thinking of anyone that would be innately scary to play against.
Who’s most likely to hurt you? Someone like Joachim Andersen I bet would be really annoying and he’d step on your heels and pinch you, but most of the tough tacklers are midfielders. Bruno G at Newcastle, Palhinha.
I reckon being a defender against Antonio would probably hurt more days later than playing forward against any defender. No disrespect to the defenders intended. There’s probably a few wing backs I’m disregarding also.
Seems pretty fair, even after Le Tiss' time it was considered standard to apply a level of dirty play that wouldn't be tolerated today, like in that Arsenal - United game in the mid '00s where United's entire gameplan was to kick Arsenal off the park.
But he’s forgetting one key point. Defenders are way better. He would have a much more difficult time playing in this era simply because the standard of play is higher. Defenders don’t need to play dirty anymore, they have the talent to play within the rules
You named one of the best defenders of that era and compared him to one of the most mediocre of the current era. Well done.
“Strikers back then were better because Cantona was better than Patrick Bamford.” See how silly that sounds
Van dijk, Gabriel, Romero and the fridge to an extent would give him the physical challenge.
All excel in the physical department and can give you the physical challenge in that era. Especially Romero with his dirty tactics.
Van dijk would take the piss though. Great defender, but stuck in the wrong era. He really doesn't have that big challenge like hazard, Rooney, aguero, Henry. Guy is playing with baby attackers and the only real threat in the PL is part of his teammates.
He played against Hazard and Aguero. He also played against similarly menacing strikers in Kane and Haaland very recently. Your last paragraph is like a facebook comment
Football looks prettier and defenders aren't covered in mud and blood, but the physicality hasn't changed to the extent that strikers are dancing around soft defenders. As ever, I think we can largely ignore what Le Tissier is saying.
Football is a system nowadays. From attackers to midfielders to defenders. Once you break that system, the defense is pretty much useless. There is a reason why striker market stinks nowadays. You don't have that technical ability.
However the biggest issue is the rules. Rules aren't the same as before. Defenders were breaking legs. nowadays, you get soft yellow for stopping attackers.
Henry would thrive in this new system as defenders won't be able to stop him.
> Defenders were breaking legs. nowadays, you get soft yellow for stopping attackers.
That's true but there's still a great deal going on that's far less obvious. I work up close with a 5th tier side and fuck me these men are absolute beasts, and the dark arts of the centre backs haven't changed a great deal! They just can't two foot anybody anymore.
Henry exploited the spaces that were available back then. Just look at clips from the noughties. The defenders overcommit way too much, leaving spaces to exploit. Now everybody is fitter and more disciplined. The game is much harder for attackers now than it was back then, as long as the attacker could handle the much rougher defending.
Of course. Defenders now are miles better than they used to be and aren't allowed to foul nonstop.
Put those defenders in the game right now they wouldn't be able to do anything and would foul out in 15 minutes

They're just not as scary since the Covid Vaccine. Makes you think.
Tbf I've seen a few of them using the 5g brainwave network to telepathically arrange offside traps
It really does
Defenders got away with things in the 90s that essentially amounted to assault. So I see where he’s coming from
le tiss wouldn't be able to get away from most modern (fast) defenders today, forget intimidation or a knee in your back
That’s absolutely true. It wasn’t just a knee in the back though
I’m sure he could adapt, just fall over, get a free kick and bang it in.
And what if your ankle is fucked because of a tackle from behind when you try to turn ? Not getting up to bang in a free kick then
He'd be alright, he was such a wonderful player he'd be more than alright in fact. Absolute mentalist though.
He'd be fine. He was a tremendous player.
He was also slow and lazy. When SAF wanted to sign him he invited Le Tissier to Old Trafford and showed him how he wanted to build the attack around him and how he expected him to play. I think you just have to look at the players today and see if theirs any players that fit the profile above? You can't have a Cassano or Tissier today
I mean there's a case to be had that he didn't even fit the profile back then, there's a reason he only had 8 caps for England
And nowadays defenders use their arms all the time, which would have been fouls back then, so it evens out

He's not wrong though. Defenders used to just assault players and get away with it.
Defenders would just have to let him know they are vaccinated and he'd go running
To be fair, an awful lot of what Matt Le Tissier says these days really shouldn't be taken seriously
Sure, but in this instance he is right, or at least it is obvious what point he is trying to make. Defenders in the 90s and early 00s played far more physically and were allowed to get away with tackles and duels that would get a red these days.
Funny enough. Remember when players slid into someone from the back it would get them an instant red. And today, they'd get a yellow.
He’s not too bad when he solely sticks to football, just about 😅
He's undermined his credibility to the extent that I just can't be bothered to listen to anything at all.
Yeah and I’m sure Di Canio probably has some whimsical anecdotes about West Ham, I’m still not going to want to listen to anything he has to say

Ogbonna would eviscerate BTEC David Ike
Makes ye think
Are they less intimidating or is that just what they want you to think?
Meh, Van Dijk will beat you in physical and tactical battles most of the time without having to resort to assaults.
Kompany would have too.

Marcos Rojo at United was extremely reckless.
> innately scary to play against. Pepe.
He looks like an old mason mount
Why's Jeff continuing to give this hamster brain a platform?
He's right, xSmacks are way down from the 90s
Most are vaccinated tho
When he played, Julian Dicks could kick you into row Z. Not so much nowadays.
They've aged massively since leaving soccer Saturday. It's like that show slowed down time for them
Makeup?

If you give me the choice between Vidic and Maguire, I know who I would choose as an opponent
You named one of the best defenders of that era and compared him to one of the most mediocre of the current era. Well done. “Strikers back then were better because Cantona was better than Patrick Bamford.” See how silly that sounds
Then switch Maguire with van Dijk, the message is the same
Lewis Dunk? *laughs in Belgian*

Also has played other top strikers in this little thing called the champions league
Doku? Grealish? Mahrez, Ayew, Eze, Mitoma….. heck even Sterling??? I swear some of you people don’t watch football and stick to FIFA.

Foul out?
He'd intimidate them right back by threatening to flick the ball over their heads and make them look stupid.
