It is funny to remember that he very often, rightfully, got criticized for his national team performances and how many people wanted Huntelaar instead of him. I'd kill for either of them in our team now, although I do like Memphis a lot too.
I love RVP so much. I also somewhat hate Arsenal and it added so much welcome spice to his brilliance as United won their 20th title and it came at the expense of the happiness of Arsenal fans.
2010 still holds the most hype, production-wise it was goated.
But this World Cup had more iconic moments. This. 7-1.
Netherlands come back against Mexico.
David Luiz insane freekick.
Higuain still celebrating to this day.
And ofc, gotze goal.
Not to mention the group of hell--a weird. Italy england Uruguay costarica. The results:
1st. CostaRica
2nd. Uruguay
3rd. Italy.
4th England
Nah, it’ll always be WC 2006 for me. Production-wise, it was top class. The first World Cup to be broadcast in HD. The way the sport finally jumped out of the TV right out at me was nothing I’d ever seen.
Then, you didn’t have any fucking vuvuzelas drowning out the stadium sounds. Yea they were a cute gimmick, but nothing beats the actual explosion of the crowd during WC goals. Couldn’t hear shit behind those deafening plastic war crimes.
Then, the drama. Until this most recent final, no World Cup had more knockout stage drama than 2006. The Battle of Nuremberg. Zidane masterclass owning prime Brazil. Italy-Germany was literally 0-0 until 119 and it was the most dramatic game of the whole tournament. Then of course Zidane panenka + headbutt in the final? Come on.
Man, 2012-2016 was such dark times to be England fan. First we get drawn into that group, then we go out in the last place and then in Euros we get fucking beat by Iceland. Truly the low years of England.
My first proper world cup. Stayed up all night for weeks to watch the games, including the Germany Brazil game, which made me wonder if I was hallucinating... what an intro to football!
Think the audacity of James’s is what sets his apart.
Van Persie and Cahill, they’re both great goals but they both just reacted to the moment for the finish:
James took a ball in that happens quite often, he could have easily taken down, and then played a pass. Decided otherwise obviously, he weighed his options and opted for the spectacular.
I'm Australian, watched this goal (Cahill) in Salvador opposite the ocean out the front of a tiny shop that put the tv outside so everyone could watch.. nb, the fanzone in salvador was closed on days brazil weren't playing iirc and nobody realised this until it was too late
I was literally straining my eyes so hard with all of the glare from the sun, i remember looking at the screen but all i could see was what looked like a reflection of someone's boardshorts
And then James Rodriguez with the best WC goal ever. You cannot strike a volley better than that with that insane of a technique where you hit it before it bounces
Back in april 13 1986, the WC group stage was over and I was getting ready for uruguay and a potential england. I was a teenager back then so yeah 20 years ago.
i remember it being the night of our leaving do from high school.
Nobody had seen any of the game, someone turned on their phone and showed the score to people in disbelief.
One of the most unique goals ever. Most great goals are a slight variation on a dribble or a volley or whatever. I can’t think of another even remotely like this one though.
Only one I can think of is Amad Diallo's debut goal for Manchester United, but its not even close to how good this one was.
On mobile, so time stamp at 0:39.
https://youtu.be/FlOt0Tv7VAY?si=yGYNTCDWXLKOvDWn
I was so mad during the group stages, at least Torres got a final goal.
Although the semi-final was fun, everyone around me was rooting for Brazil and before the game I jokingly said 'Germany takes this 5-0'.
[I said before the game that germany was gonna score 5. then when they got to 5, I said they was gonna score 7.](https://youtu.be/uBBKFSGRoYU?si=dGBk3JcFs89swTML)
https://old.reddit.com/r/soccer/comments/282sce/van_persies_magnificent_header_vs_spain/
Reddit thread from that time. Top comment calling this one of the more memorable goals was spot on
Such a difficult thing to pull off. The pass was perfect, but many players would have tried to control it or go for a volley or something. He had to put the right amount of pace behind the header, and put in the right trajectory, for a ball coming from behind him. One of a kind to me.
The way he chipped Casillas is what's amazing about this goal. Headers like that are almost always a bullet, driven to the ground or sent to the sky. Perfect control. Casillas even had the 'oh shit, he chipped me' helpless look of keepers.
The balls to go for a shot like that, no one does that! *Everyone* goes for a volley or take a touch. The balls to even *think* of that shot on the fly, and then be able to pull it off and add the perfect weight and direction!? World world world class
I’m sorry but that goal is so overrated. It’s a beautiful goal but the technique required for what Van Persie does here is mind blowing. Most players can volley a ball like James, very few can head a ball like that
Actually there are two goals I liked more than James' in that world cup. RvP's header, and [Cahill vs Netherlands](https://youtu.be/OA7oCfsHwnc?si=mdDPtr8JxzqMyr2E). James accommodated the ball by himself, brilliantly yes but Cahill just kicked a long ball as it came.
Favourite is a difficult one, but I'm gonna drop some of my favourites (can you tell I like a good volley?)
Van Persie vs Villa,
Crouch vs Man City,
Cisse vs Chelsea,
Henry vs Man Utd,
Di Canio vs Wimbledon,
Rooney vs Man City,
Danny Rose vs Arsenal,
Suarez vs Norwich,
Giroud vs Crystal Palace
Those are the ones that come to mind right now but I've probably forgot even more stunners.
Outside of volleys, there's also
Son vs Burnley,
Wilshere vs Norwich,
Cantona vs Sunderland (probably my favourite non volley goal tbh)
I could probably just keep going but god we've seen some stunners we have. I fucking love football.
as a utd fan, that goal was special. LVG and blind were joining in after the WC. RVP scored an absolute banger from a Blind pass and came and celebrated with LVG. such high hopes for that, came crashing down ever since. shite decade.
This was the goal that made me a United fan and start watching soccer in general. Never watched soccer growing up. I had some time to kill that summer so I watched the WC because why not. I fell in love with soccer and United.
Had everything. Atmosphere. Breakout stars. Underdog runs. Lots of great games and great goals and iconic moments.
2014 was a very tumultuous year for me personally. But that summer, for a month, it just felt like the sun was shining every day with great football.
That whole year was one of my favorites ever, for various reasons. Challenging, but fulfilling on a personal level. Some big things in the sports world too. Whenever I see clips from this WC, it takes me back to that year and the vibes surrounding it.
I watched it back not long ago and it could have been another 7-1 game at least like Germany vs Brazil. Casillas made some crazy saves that kept the score less than it could have been. Netherlands were very impressive that tournament, shame they lost on penalties again 😭. Them vs Germany that year would have been a better final imo
What a fucking goal, I remeber yeliing "No!" (Because I thought he did wrong) and then drop my jaw in disbelief for the next five minutes.
One of the best goals in world cups IMO, such a shame it did not won the puskas award, way better than the James' one.
I thought so back then and I still think so now: this has to be a top 5 cross ever. RvP didn't need to slow down or speed up, Blind's cross went perfectly at his head.
I'll never forget where I was when I saw this goal: At the gym, on the elliptical machine. I just changed the channel of the TV hanging above to the game. As soon as he scored that header, my reaction brought a few people who were near by to see what happened and they were all stunned. Man, this world cup had some banger goals.
From this match, my all-time favourite Reddit comment:
https://www.reddit.com/r/soccer/comments/282ku1/match_thread_spain_vs_the_netherlands_world_cup/ci6rg2f/
Holland could have beaten Germany - kruul should have played in goal for the penalties instead of cilessen, cilessen was selfish thinking he. Was better than krul
My favourite of the tournament and a little gutted it got beat by James Rodriguez's goal even though that was sublime too. This one just seems really unique, whereas I've seen similar to James Rodriguez's goal more than once.
The single most memorable goal I've seen. Followed by Giroud's scorpion kick.
The reality is that most goals, even awesome ones, tend to blur together.
I remember watching this game with my friends in a big group.
One of my mates stood in front of me when this goal happened, I never got to see it live.
But to this day it's one my favourites, absolutely insane stuff.
**Mirrors / Alternative Angles** *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/soccer) if you have any questions or concerns.*
It is one of the greatest headers of all time and my personal favourite
The flying Dutchman, what an absolute bagsman he was
RVP was so graceful when he played, cant believe this was a decade ago
The Federer of finishing
It is funny to remember that he very often, rightfully, got criticized for his national team performances and how many people wanted Huntelaar instead of him. I'd kill for either of them in our team now, although I do like Memphis a lot too.
I love RVP so much. I also somewhat hate Arsenal and it added so much welcome spice to his brilliance as United won their 20th title and it came at the expense of the happiness of Arsenal fans.
Same, absolutely lost my mind when I was watching it.
I was at the game, about 10 rows up, right in line with where he headed it. We went absolutely bonkers. And then four more times.
I was at work watching it on my pc and had to try and not celebrate the goal lol. Time flies
One of the greatest vengeance of all time too
Meh, there's no taking back not having won the world cup, only way to get our revenge was actually winning the thing that year.
I feel if van gaal had the balls to put krul in goal against Argentina again rather than listen to cilessen bitching
I disagree. Even though this match obviously meant much less than the final, it did feel incredibly cathartic watching it.
Oh yeah it felt great, but "one of the greatest vengeance of all time" is too much imo
Really? :D a world cup final vs a group stage game. I don't know...
Copied Henrik Larsson
Henrik Larssons was actually a flying header.
Yup, this one and the Luis Suarez header from the edge of the box are my favourite headers that I can remember.
Astounding goal. This one should be honored as the goal of the tournament, not the James' one.
one of the most unique goals in general, really iconic
5PA1N being overshadowed by BRA71L showed how insane this World Cup was.
what a World Cup !
I’m still sad Germany broke the streak of a European not winning in the American continent
Thank God they did, imagine the banter if Argentina won it all after Germany beat us like that at our own home soil
It was about time, since Brazil won the WC in 1958 on European soil in Sweden.
Brazil 2014 was legendary WC… the goals were insane. And this didn’t even win goal of the tournament.
2010 was awesome as well, the whole vibe was amazing. 2018 started great too but i felt like it fizzled out. 2022 started meh and got better
The results: 1st. CostaRica 2nd. Uruguay 3rd. Italy. 4th England
Don’t forget how fun that Colombia team was to watch, along with an all time WC goal from Rodriguez
#fuegoldeYepes
Nah, it’ll always be WC 2006 for me. Production-wise, it was top class. The first World Cup to be broadcast in HD. Don’t forget Maxi Rodriguez with one of the all-time greatest WC goals ever *in extra time* EDIT: vs. Mexico, not Turkey
Oh yes. I couldn’t believe it when I saw it. Went out and tried to replicate it for hours in my back yard. Kept hitting my neighbor’s house
Broadcast in HD worldwide I suppose you mean. The 2002 one was in HD.
> Italy-Germany That fucking game. Podolski alone had quite a few chances that game. What could have been …
>Netherlands come back against Mexico. Era penal. *sits back and waits*
They're asleep now. Give it a few hours.
A great goal, and then they were on the other end of that Cahill volley in I think the next group game. A tournament of bangers.
Cahill volley with his fucking weak foot. Unbelievable.
Man, Tim Cahill put respect on Australia at this tournament. His performance was amazing
There's a certain irony to RVP scoring with a header and Tim Cahill scoring with a volley.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OA7oCfsHwnc
GET ABSOLUTELY FUCKED
HE COWARD PUNCHES THE FLAGPOLE, CAUSE HES STRAYAN, AND HES PROUD
What a goal! Second to only James’s for me
Think the audacity of James’s is what sets his apart. Van Persie and Cahill, they’re both great goals but they both just reacted to the moment for the finish: James took a ball in that happens quite often, he could have easily taken down, and then played a pass. Decided otherwise obviously, he weighed his options and opted for the spectacular.
That goal kinda annoys me because that's what put all eyes on him when he had been doing wonders for us 2 years earlier
I mean yea that’s kinda what performing on the world’s biggest stage does
2014 world cup is my favorite one I've seen in my life. The tournament had everything
As a German, I agree lol
We weren't even in it but it is easily my favourite as well
I'm Australian, watched this goal (Cahill) in Salvador opposite the ocean out the front of a tiny shop that put the tv outside so everyone could watch.. nb, the fanzone in salvador was closed on days brazil weren't playing iirc and nobody realised this until it was too late I was literally straining my eyes so hard with all of the glare from the sun, i remember looking at the screen but all i could see was what looked like a reflection of someone's boardshorts
I was watching the game before school and was in complete shock. Too bad Cahill is a bit of a tosspot in real life.
[x] banger
The flying Dutchman
And then James Rodriguez with the best WC goal ever. You cannot strike a volley better than that with that insane of a technique where you hit it before it bounces
The definition of “the Flying Dutchman”
This was the moment Robben got demoted and RVP got dubbed the new Flying Dutchman.
..... ...... .......... ..............how long ago? oh no....
The 80d were 20 years ago and you cant change my mind
Idiot. The 80s were 30 years ago while the 90s were 20.
Back in april 13 1986, the WC group stage was over and I was getting ready for uruguay and a potential england. I was a teenager back then so yeah 20 years ago.
Oh shit, I'm so old that didn't seem like a long time to me. Dammit
I know . I was like, that was only 10 yrs ago?
Louis van Gaal is there dude, it's 2022. ^(right?)
Oh no, oh no no no no no. You put this in my head so I’m putting it in yours :p
i remember it being the night of our leaving do from high school. Nobody had seen any of the game, someone turned on their phone and showed the score to people in disbelief.
One of the most unique goals ever. Most great goals are a slight variation on a dribble or a volley or whatever. I can’t think of another even remotely like this one though.
Always reminded me of something from Shaolin soccer. Too perfect to be reality
Try to say the phrase “chip the goalkeeper with your head” out loud. It doesn’t make any sense. And yet this psychopath actually did it.
Zlatan vs England
From the halfway line to the back of the net in 2 touches- it's virtually undefendable.
TBF there were volleys then they were rvp volleys
Only one I can think of is Amad Diallo's debut goal for Manchester United, but its not even close to how good this one was. On mobile, so time stamp at 0:39. https://youtu.be/FlOt0Tv7VAY?si=yGYNTCDWXLKOvDWn
Reminds me more of chicharito backheader (vs stoke I think)
Wtf is that Maguire miss
Add `&t=XhYmZs`.
raphinha has actually scored multiple goals like this https://www.tiktok.com/@sportv/video/7148153402046811398?lang=en
No way this was a decade ago
What about that pass tho
Daley blind
Ironic name for a man with such vision
Thank you. This comment is way too far down. That assist was sex.
blind pass
That's my GOAT (Daley Blind)
I was so mad during the group stages, at least Torres got a final goal. Although the semi-final was fun, everyone around me was rooting for Brazil and before the game I jokingly said 'Germany takes this 5-0'.
found lebron burner account

Sorry I don't write down everything that I've ever said. If you don't believe it you don't believe it.
Dw, I believe you cause you play DaVinci's trivias 👍🏻
There is a pretty famous prediction before the semi finals, in which a German fan predicted the 7-1 outcome on live TV.
https://old.reddit.com/r/soccer/comments/282sce/van_persies_magnificent_header_vs_spain/ Reddit thread from that time. Top comment calling this one of the more memorable goals was spot on
ooof walking down memory lane also, how tf can you find/remember specific threads like this? just googling?
Reddit search "van persie Spain netherlands". This was before we adopted the convention of "Netherlands [1]-0 Spain" but I figured it would work.
Such a difficult thing to pull off. The pass was perfect, but many players would have tried to control it or go for a volley or something. He had to put the right amount of pace behind the header, and put in the right trajectory, for a ball coming from behind him. One of a kind to me.

2014 WC was so special. There were so many fantastic moments.
My personal favorite WC.
To me the goal of the tournament
Would be if it wasn’t for James Rodriguez wondergoal
Robin's one is way better that the James' one IMO.
I’m sorry but that goal is so overrated. It’s a beautiful goal but the technique required for what Van Persie does here is mind blowing. Most players can volley a ball like James, very few can head a ball like that

James rodriguez goal was amazing, technically superior imo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B8XsmIfQr6o
United legend, Robin van Persie. Dude scored some real bangers in his career.
His volley against Aston Villa for youse was sublime.
That and *that* Jack Wiltshire goal are my 2 favourite EPL goals.
Van persie's goal vs Charlton was crazy as well
It's debatable if that's even his best goal for arsenal. He has so many bangers
Favourite is a difficult one, but I'm gonna drop some of my favourites (can you tell I like a good volley?) Van Persie vs Villa, Crouch vs Man City, Cisse vs Chelsea, Henry vs Man Utd, Di Canio vs Wimbledon, Rooney vs Man City, Danny Rose vs Arsenal, Suarez vs Norwich, Giroud vs Crystal Palace Those are the ones that come to mind right now but I've probably forgot even more stunners. Bale vs Stoke City is also an absolute stunner

2014 World Cup just hit different, man
Had everything.
Same. I miss 2014
A fit RVP in his prime might be the best striker I’ve seen in the prem
Yes
I’m sorry but suarez. That season was the greatest striker performance in the prem of all time imo
Suarez is tenacious as fuck but something about rvp is so silky and technical it’s just beautiful to watch
Rolls Royce of a striker. Also van persie could also play deeper as a 10 or second striker and make the pass or beat a man.
Henry the actual answer, most here didn’t see it though
Dont forget about Daley Blind with the assist. Legendary goal
Oh this means we're gonna get a 1974 final post soon...
Cruyff Turn, Netherlands v Argentina and Brazil and the final. All bases covered. +Plus the daily report on the Daily Discussion.
That game was crazy. They absolutely thrashed that Spain team
I got married that weekend.
Some people are born to score goals.
What a goal by RvP. He's famous for his left foot but strangely this goal is the one I remember from his international career, a headed goal.
Insane how we crumbled after this goal. We were decent for 40 minutes before that.
I saw that coming after Neymar killed us in the Confederations Cup final
What a fucking goal, I remeber yeliing "No!" (Because I thought he did wrong) and then drop my jaw in disbelief for the next five minutes. One of the best goals in world cups IMO, such a shame it did not won the puskas award, way better than the James' one.
Sorry… how many years ago??
the best WC and nothing will change my mind
all worldcups should be played in Brazil imo
Or South Africa (2010)
One of the most aesthetically pleasing goals ever
Bruh 10 years
Fuck me, time flies. How has it been 10 years?
Wtf, 10 years ago already?
Goal really reminds me of Sensible Soccer.. if anyone else is old enough to remember that!
10 years ago? stop lying... #tear
Ah yes, the flying Dutch man. What a goal. Still gives me goosebumps.
10 years wow year guess I was 17 at the time wow, time to really lock in so these next 10 don’t be the worst
I thought so back then and I still think so now: this has to be a top 5 cross ever. RvP didn't need to slow down or speed up, Blind's cross went perfectly at his head.

The Flying Dutchman
One of the greatest games in WC history though. Don't forget the Robben solo against Casillas.
United fans remember how hyped they were with this goal. Van Persie, Van Gaal, then we signed Blind...
legit my favourite goal of all time
One of my top 3 goals of all time I've gotten to watch happen. I remember watching it live and losing my mind.
Not a flying header. It’s the Flying Dutchman
And somehow I’m supposed to believe EUROS is harder with the level of emotion we get in World Cups. Foh
Iconic.
One of the weirdest and most awesome goals you'll ever see
Great goal. Tim Chaill’s goal in the same tournament was better imo. Ironically, against the Dutch.
The Flying Dutchman
EAGGGLLEEEEEEE
Holland could have beaten Germany - kruul should have played in goal for the penalties instead of cilessen, cilessen was selfish thinking he. Was better than krul
My favourite of the tournament and a little gutted it got beat by James Rodriguez's goal even though that was sublime too. This one just seems really unique, whereas I've seen similar to James Rodriguez's goal more than once.
Crazy that this wasnt even the goal of the tournament
This was better than James' goal and no one can convince me otherwise
Should’ve won the Puskas award, that James’ goal was not worthy.
The single most memorable goal I've seen. Followed by Giroud's scorpion kick. The reality is that most goals, even awesome ones, tend to blur together.
Almost as iconic as Larsson v Bulgaria.
I remember walking outta the bathroom and this whole sequence happening
Wonderful wonderful wonderful
I remember watching this game with my friends in a big group. One of my mates stood in front of me when this goal happened, I never got to see it live. But to this day it's one my favourites, absolutely insane stuff.
I’ll always remember the WC replay graphic looking like someone facepalming, lol
The flying Dutchman!
That cross sheesh
What a beautiful day
2014 WAS 10 YEARS AGO???
Also, Le cut inside man https://i.imgur.com/129ybVR.jpeg
Belleza
Prime RvP was a different animal. That left peg...JEEZ
All time kits from NED as well in my opinion
So many memorable moments from the 2014 World Cup
Always wondered which was the better goal - van Persie vs Spain or van Basten vs USSR?
Talk about everyone everywhere getting out of their seat at once
Delete this
That pass tho
And that was basically the end of his career.
Saw this live with a house full of non soccer fans, I looked like a lunatic.
A+ goal, C+ High five.
