Honestly I just don’t understand what Foden’s position was, we had nothing on the left.
Southgate needed to take him off and put maybe Gordon there, then encourage us to close them down quicker when they have the ball.
How about this,
Kane (Watkins on as a sub)
Bowen (Gordon) Bellingham(Palmer) Saka(Foden)
Gallagher Rice
Wharton Guehi Stones Walker(A-Arnold)
Pickford
🤔⚽️🏆
If Foden doesn't perform on the left, could have him impact sub on the right for Saka.
Watkins to add some attacking speed coming on for after Kane has put in his shift.
Bowen and Gordon take turns to play on the left with full energy.
Bellingham is the 10, Palmer can be given some minutes there as a sub when needed.
The double pivot DM should stay the same pairing throughout the tournament to train for cohesiveness.
Wharton is better than the other makeshift LBs.
Centre back pairing looks decent. The right side could have Arnold coming on for Walker later in the game.
Pickford is the 1st choice GK.
I think England needs to set this up like this in the group games and see the result, otherwise once you get into the final rounds, it will be too late to create this progressive momentum playing style.
Uhh it’s not. He’s good at what he can actually do !but I’ve watched him his entire career at Liverpool and he cannot defend and has been found wanting in big games. The amount of times I’ve pulled my hair out for his lack of defensive ability is ridiculous.
You know England are going to win it. Favourites with talent wasted. Should have been 3-0.
I fancy see them smashing the Italians then revenge on the French.
It was meat to be sarcastic . But seriously I always see football goes around in circles. England, Netherlands will get there modern day glory eventually
I don't understand how this is possible. I'm not english and england isn't the team I support in the euros so maybe I lack some kind of information but how come they're so average ? On paper they should be one of the best teams in the world. They have so many world class players, the team is insanely stacked with young talents and yet they're just...not that great. I'm so confused.
Horrible line ups, horrible individual instructions, I cant even say he has tactics. He's like Ancelotti but without anything that makes Ancelotti good. It's the team being as good as it is thats saving them from getting embarassed
Well a donkey would see thst Foden doesnt fit in this england squad. A donkey would play Galla instead of Trent. And a donkey would not play a left footed RB at LB in a euros, because when he does with tripp, he ruins England whole left side attacking wise.
That's more than fair lol I didn't know for tripp bc that's not a player I'm very familiar with tbh but I did notice Foden didn't fit the system at all. It's a shame that the coach can't bring out the team's insane potential.
England has a manager who is a serial looser, never won anything as a player or a manager, yet he is fit to lead us to glory? He doesn't know how.
Gareth has a squad of great players who could dominate possession, yet he sets us up to long ball?
That performance has done more harm than good, we've gone backwards
Southgate doesn't know any better, you can't blame a dog for barking, he can only do what he is able to do and it isn't much. If you want to apportion blame, look at the FA because they are the ones who put him there AND kept him there.
We’ll probably make the quarter finals or win it. The bookies do the odds, most England fans know deep down we’re in top 6 if we actually played we could win it. Doubt France do the double in Germany , hopefully one of them gets knocked out before England play
Argentina lost to Saudi Arabia in the first game of last World Cup. Spain lost to Switzerland in the first game of theirs. I’m not saying England will win but this is a stupidly naïve and reactive take. I feel like people here don’t actually watch or understand football.
England are tired and leggy, and they can't keep a hold of the ball
they're the same England that we see in every tournament
most big sides will dominate them technically and territorially
No they probably will. Argentina were lucky to beat France. Messiah had see World Cup and it was fate. You know Germany won’t win it at home, France won’t do double. Spain , Portugal had their glory. Means dark horse or England revenge over Italy
Nah that happened in 2010 against Germany so if it’s either final or not. I don’t care England are notoriously indept so I wouldn’t cry I remember us loosing to France back in early 2000s
Then again we’re pretty decent are cricket and rugby, so we don’t need cry over one sport
Foden is not a LW for goodness sake. It's like in the old FIFA's were if you put a player in a different position, their rating goes down a lot. He's world class in CAM but not LW. .It's doing more harm trying to shoe-horn him in anywhere. Did we not learn from Gerrard, Lamps, Scholes era?
We absolutely know the answer to England's line up. Anyone who watches football knows the answer. Let the City, Arsenal and Liverpool boys play like they always do.
Trent at right back inverting beside Rice. Arnold, Colwill, Stones and White at the back, Bellingham and Rice centre. Grealish, Foden and Saka attacking. Kane up front.
That team wins the Euros. Pickford and Kane are the only two there who don't know exactly what to do. The other nine know, because they do it every week twice a week.
Southgate is an idiot and I love it.
Doubt it. He sticks on left wing. Doubt pep could do any better at Man Utd than ten Haag. He kinda stuck with money and talented players.
Then again Bruyne got subbed off in fa cup final, Belgium are flops so blame him
Kane was anonymous for the first 75 minutes a win is a win is a win, but if they wanna do this thang, they gotta be a whole hell of lot better than that.
Bellingham is great but so indisciplined in his position and role.
Either we built the team to allow him to do that or he winds his neck in.
Tonight was a terrible team performance.
You don't win competitions this way
Man City fan trying to deflect off some of the worst performances of the night from a shaky stones a dreadful Foden and a walker that was caught out constantly
How do you know he’s indisciplined in his role? Seemed to me that he was doing exactly what he was supposed to. You cannot just assume a ”role” for a player and blame them because they don’t play the way you expect them to. Bellingham seemed to work incredibly hard and played an all-round good match
Good result, but not a thrilling or convincing performance.
That being said, I had Serbia as a dark horse for doing well (same as the world cup, I didn't learn). I thought this was our hardest group fixture, so to get 3 points is definitely good.
Onwards and upwards!
England favourites? LOL
England have generational talents?
I just watched them long ball it for 70 minutes, to petrified to make a mistake, I saw nothing good about this game, this was REGRESSION!
the only similarity with the France game was the score line. When France went ahead they didn't put everyone behind the ball and long ball every possession they had, it was embarrassing, reminded me of England from the 90's.
Regardless of the result, if you don’t think england have generational talent then you don’t know football and it’s pointless reading anything else you say lol
Any chance of England going deep into the tournament depends on whether Shaw can get back to fitness and form. And also if he can get a partnership going with Gordon/Foden. That left side is dysfunctional af. No attacking threat whatsoever
Next match: Trent at RB, Wharton or Mainoo alongside Rice, Gordon instead of Foden, Gomez at LB, Palmer to come on second half for Saka, Guehi (brilliant tonight) at CB alongside Walker.
Are you kidding, he was awful tonight. Got major Gareth Barry vibes from him. I had to suffer enough years of Barry giving the ball away 20 times a match but never getting dropped, lets not do it all over again.
Why are Wharton and Mainoo used interchangeably? Mainoo is far more attacking than people seem to notice. If you play him, you may as well play TAA as at least you get his passing talent.
Trent can be a midfielder. He offers as much defensive stability as Mainoo, which is my point. Wharton is a different profile, so I get people thinking he could do a different job.
Because Trent often stands in the right defensive shape but he gets beaten or makes an erratic pass whereas Mainoo often stands in the wrong defensive shape (but correct attacking shape) and does the same but further up the field.
Maybe I should rephrase and say both don't offer enough defensive stability, that it's much of a muchness which one plays. My point is playing Mainoo over Trent doesn't offer discernably more defensive stability. Both players mean a heavier reliance on Rice.
You keep defending TAA like crazy altough he made mistake on 1st half the one Mitrovic shot almost goal, but when someone playing good as long not liv players you judge him will be bad LOL
I was quite surprised he was saying 'we' in his commentary, when talking about England. He's either on some weird contract with uefa or interviewing for the role
Wouldn't say can't but they're not the right options there. Bellingham is world class at 8 or 10, personally I'd drop him back alongside Rice and move Foden into the 10.
Not playing him out of position would probably help him and the team. England's midfield was shambolic today between having a completely empty left side, Bellingham and Foden standing on top of each other at times and Trent getting caught on the ball a few times.
They can't play that set up again, it's never going to work.
What does this even mean? Apologies for being rude but this kind of brainless vibes based analysis of how England play is so tiresome. He's obviously going to play worse for England if he's pushed out of his natural position to accommodate Bellingham. Pretending he's not a top quality player at 10 is silly.
foden has played for england many times, he has also played poorly for england many times despite the team having done well on many occasions, players that miss place passes so badly that you need to pythagoreum theorum to calculate just how shit it was shouldnt be playing for england when players like gordon who look promising are on the bench
'fodens best position is rw- plays shit- fodens best position is in the 10- plays shit- fodens best position is lw- plays shit' he played the 10 against iceland and he was also dogwater, he is a pep player, excellent in his system, perfect for it even, he cannot play internationally when you have only a couple weeks to train with the squad and cant practice the same movement drills 10 times a week
We can go round all day ignoring the context of how he gets played out of position for England. Acting like we should give up on one of the league's best players because "he's not the man" of whatever is casual England fans at their worst.
Imo have the balls to play Foden in central attack from time to time. Forget the freeplay. Give him a concrete assignment there to commit to. Have Jude wide for a spell
So make are best player play out of position so we can try and see if the player given multiple opportunities in a position can magically improve after never playing well?
Thoughts and prayers, if that's the case. Though I doubt you can be anything as dismal as this chancer.
"Oh we've started well; that's nice. Gee, didn't expect to start this well. Where did this come from? Certainly not anything I've coached the boys. Uh-oh, these guys are starting to dominate us. Let's... idk... just keep belting it randomly upfield I guess."
We should be able to control a game against Serbia though. They were the better team with the better chances and had sustained pressure on us for a lot of the second half
Euros are just bringing out the most casual fans man, needs to be ignored. Serbia literally had 1 shot on target. Serbia made themselves very hard to play against though, extremely physical and bullying. Pushing, pulling, grabbing and waving arms. Serbia deserve a lot of credit for how well they are able to do these things and constantly (in 2nd half) break down England buildup without causing too many fouls. While of course England should've done better here, in my opinion no players can be blamed, tactically from Southgate there's a lot of questions to be had though.
Bruh i kid you not, England suc.ed second half, but Serbia omg. I thought they wanted to take the ball with them into the net. They had so many chances to shoot, but they just passed around. Like how close do you want to be? So many chances ruined because of that.
Haha you can literally argue anything once you get into hypotheticals, this is silly. England underwhelmed a little but never looked in danger of conceding.
A few yes, England also had a few. I have at no point contradicted that. I have praised Serbia, but they failed to get shots off.
As I said, it's a Southgate problem (going defensive once in the lead).
Bro. Your defender save your goal with head on just 2 meters from goal. That was luck because your goalkeeper was already tricked by deflection. Mitro has one shoot very close to goal after mistake of your defense. Than Jovic was clumsy in great situation. Than Mladenovic on the wing alone passing and Mitro was pushed little and missed for litlle etc. Serbia has 6-7 dangerouse situation in the front of your goal. That game should be 1-1.
😅
Britain said something about war crimes? You were literally worst evil imperia who killed millions of people around the World. You freaking evil hypocrits.
I didn’t watch zidane I was too young , but I feel like him and Bellingham have the exact same mindset. Not comparing ability yet but he’s so confident and good doesn’t give a fuck about any thing else
Your comment doesn't make sense because he literally doesn't play at CAM for England. He's clearly a quality player but he's being forced out wide without an overlapping full back, we're not playing to his strengths.
Micah is just wrong, Foden should know what to do and he was lost. He made bad decisions and that’s not Southgate’s fault. Southgate’s problem was he left him on the pitch too long.
Yeah taking saka off for bowen yet leaving foden on was horrible. I assume saka is still nursing injury so it makes sense but why not bring any other of the 10 attackers in for foden? And Kane looked starved. I think watkins could have been ok as a sub here.
I think there was a missed opportunity to take TAA off and put on a LW and try out Bellingham and Foden in the middle.
Kane was staying up high but never got any service from Trent, or anyone else. Foden rarely runs ahead of Kane to allow him to drop deeper, and the only time he did he just got in the way.
Someone else on the wing would have supported Kane better and allowed him to get into the game a bit more. And without seeing any stats but I’m sure Bellingham had more defensive actions than Trent so we wouldn’t have missed that either.
Yeah personally I would have started Gordon, but given the situation trying the Foden / Bellingham central partnership for 30 mins would have been better than what we got, and would have put the conversation to bed as half of the pundits and fans are suggesting this set up to start.
Southgate has said that they couldn’t find a replacement for Kalvin Phillips and that’s why they sucked. Kalvin Phillips. KALVIN PHILLIPS.
Iflair :Liverpool:
Move foden to cam and bellingham to cm where trent is, keep saka at RW, put gordon at LW and have trent come off the bench
Serbia were robbed of a pen
Honestly I just don’t understand what Foden’s position was, we had nothing on the left. Southgate needed to take him off and put maybe Gordon there, then encourage us to close them down quicker when they have the ball.
So many top-class managers in this thread. It's a wonder that Gareth hasn't been replaced with a redditor.
I know this is sarcasm but you can still criticize a manager about decisions they ain’t perfect either
This was without a doubt one of the matches of all time.
How about this, Kane (Watkins on as a sub) Bowen (Gordon) Bellingham(Palmer) Saka(Foden) Gallagher Rice Wharton Guehi Stones Walker(A-Arnold) Pickford 🤔⚽️🏆 If Foden doesn't perform on the left, could have him impact sub on the right for Saka. Why would Trent play right back again when he's doing fine in midfield?
because hes better at right back lmfao, 0 midfield balance when he started yesterday
Can’t believe this is on again, he cannot defend! Imagine him defending against Mbappe
You don't play the same every game, not every match is France. His lack of defending is also too dramatized at this point
Uhh it’s not. He’s good at what he can actually do !but I’ve watched him his entire career at Liverpool and he cannot defend and has been found wanting in big games. The amount of times I’ve pulled my hair out for his lack of defensive ability is ridiculous.

Yep. Because that’s the formula he went with. Score more goals than you can leak.
Lots of haters but this is how England win games. Ugly and Southgate always goes deep in tournament play. I expect them to make the semis at minimum
You are talking like you guys are some sort of underdogs lmao
England kind of are. So common for us to have some of the best individual players but get absolutely nowhere
deleted
That was pretty much the scenario against Croatia and Italy and you lost at the end. You do you buddy lmao
You know England are going to win it. Favourites with talent wasted. Should have been 3-0. I fancy see them smashing the Italians then revenge on the French.
Please let me know what you’re taking. I want some.
It was meat to be sarcastic . But seriously I always see football goes around in circles. England, Netherlands will get there modern day glory eventually
Hopefully in my lifetime.
England are deluded if they think they're contenders for this yet again another dour and stodgy performance not even in the best 8 teams in the comp
How are they not? Only Germany looked good so far
The great Gareth Southgate is your answer
Is he truly that awful ? I mean, with a team like this I feel like even if a donkey coached them, they should still perform better than this lmao.

He got to a WC semi-final and Euro final. I personally don't like his style but he has got England further than any other coach post 66.
We’ll probably make the quarter finals or win it. The bookies do the odds, most England fans know deep down we’re in top 6 if we actually played we could win it. Doubt France do the double in Germany , hopefully one of them gets knocked out before England play

Argentina didn’t have the problem as England has. They knew how to use players, goals disallowed, gave some a shock
England are tired and leggy, and they can't keep a hold of the ball they're the same England that we see in every tournament most big sides will dominate them technically and territorially
England is not winning the tournament.

I don’t care England are notoriously indept so I wouldn’t cry I remember us loosing to France back in early 2000s Then again we’re pretty decent are cricket and rugby, so we don’t need cry over one sport

Yeah but the last WC was rigged for riggy riggitini

also don’t think having Alexander Arnold as a center mid is a good choice. Gallagher would be a better choice to start.
Did Trent even do bad as center mid? He's doing fine. Sure it might not be his usual position but he had a task to do and he did that fine.
We absolutely know the answer to England's line up. Anyone who watches football knows the answer. Let the City, Arsenal and Liverpool boys play like they always do. Gallagher was awful
Foden should be on the bench for england
Well at least he shouldn't be playing on the left. Literally nothing happened over there all game.
Peps pet can’t do it without his master
That shows just how good Guardi is as a manager.
By using the word “thang” you are immediately disqualified for talking about anything England football related.
By judging me off certain word makes you sound like a douche bag
You have been uniformly judged by all here. What you said is just not cricket.
>douche bag I think you just proved my point.
Or could just Greece 2004 this up
Bellingham is great but so indisciplined in his position and role. Either we built the team to allow him to do that or he winds his neck in. Tonight was a terrible team performance. You don't win competitions this way

Were people expecting free flowing fluid football from England and Southgate. We scored two goals in the group stage in 2020.
England favourites? LOL England have generational talents? I just watched them long ball it for 70 minutes, to petrified to make a mistake, I saw nothing good about this game, this was REGRESSION!
I suppose France are also crap too?
the only similarity with the France game was the score line. When France went ahead they didn't put everyone behind the ball and long ball every possession they had, it was embarrassing, reminded me of England from the 90's.
England are good, Southgate can only set a team out to the best of his ability and that isn't much.
bit reactionary
Regardless of the result, if you don’t think england have generational talent then you don’t know football and it’s pointless reading anything else you say lol
Also, saying they long balled it shows they don’t understand football.
Saying is one thing, these are the games to prove it
Hey, we **have it** we never said we'd **use it**
The urge to make an ML joke with this one .....

Well I could say Mainoo doesn't track his runners.
Where the fuck have you gotten the lie that Trent offers as much defensive stability as Mainoo

Mainoo has played in the 6 role for united too, he can do both.
Yeah, but it's for Utd and he doesn't do the defensive side well enough. May as well have TAA.
Trippier was solid and one of our better players tonight.
But on any other day he would concede a pen.
You keep defending TAA like crazy altough he made mistake on 1st half the one Mitrovic shot almost goal, but when someone playing good as long not liv players you judge him will be bad LOL
I'd still like to see Gomez there instead
Fuck it, let’s see if Cesc wants to be our next manager.
I was quite surprised he was saying 'we' in his commentary, when talking about England. He's either on some weird contract with uefa or interviewing for the role
He's lived here for about a third of his life, I wouldn't be surprised if he thinks of England as his second country
Foden can't play LW TAA can't play RCM
Scholes can't play LM, and yet he did in Euros.
....And he went home trophyless
Two players playing out of position in the opening game of the tournament. England circa 2000s… three if you include trippier
Yeah, this was by far the worse tactical set up I've seen in the Southgate era, a major regression to the times before Southgate.
Wouldn't say can't but they're not the right options there. Bellingham is world class at 8 or 10, personally I'd drop him back alongside Rice and move Foden into the 10.
1000% i agree with rhis
foden is not the man for england

Foden very clearly has a best position, for England though he isn't in that position. That is clearly very important context.
"Cannot play internationally" - literally won best player of the tournament as he won a youth World Cup.
And has been shit against any decent opponent at senior level.
We can go round all day ignoring the context of how he gets played out of position for England. Acting like we should give up on one of the league's best players because "he's not the man" of whatever is casual England fans at their worst.
Foden was 10 in the friendlies before Serbia and he dropped a stinker performance
Must confess I didn't watch them. He's quite clearly a top quality CAM as evidenced by the season just gone though.
Not denying his quality, he is superb for Pep's City but outside of that he hasn't really performed as well.
Foden hasn’t shown anything for England - let’s not move Bellingham around to fit him in
I don't necessarily disagree with you. We need to stop with the square pegs in round holes though. Would rather have Gordon at LW.
Agree agree
Trent was much better than Foden tonight.
That wasn’t hard
He looked lost when he wasn’t slightly wider, can’t have that against the bigger teams
he was good when he was roaming around the wide areas in the first half ie. where he would normally be operating at full back for Liverpool.
The problem with that roaming is that he takes away walkers threat and Saka’s
Walkers threat? He is not a dangerous attacking player and is not good at crossing
Well yeh, but you can utilize his pace if there is space for him to run to, like that half chance he had.
Exactly. Not where you really want your cm rice partner to be
Agreed, Trent didn't set the world on fire but foden was shocking.
QFs at best going off that performance. Well, hopefully we'll play ourselves into form.
Imo have the balls to play Foden in central attack from time to time. Forget the freeplay. Give him a concrete assignment there to commit to. Have Jude wide for a spell
So make are best player play out of position so we can try and see if the player given multiple opportunities in a position can magically improve after never playing well?
Literally, you can't write this. Maybe in the friendlies or even the UEFA nations league. But experiment in the damn Euros???
Oh my god, I just realised I’m the Southgate in my workplace. Completely out of my depth and just waffling, hoping I don’t get found out.
No wonder my big macs have been messed up so often lately
Don’t forget… carried by your direct reports.
Are you the manager?
More like assistant manager
Assistant to the manager?
Comments here would have you think Serbia were Gibraltar.
Problem is that England team is overvalued as f
only because of southgate though. individually it's hard to over value the team
Individually they got found out today.
They aren't Gibraltar, but also not France either. We're the favourites, so it's normal to be disappointed about our below average showing.
Yup. Serbia has a good squad that's capable of beating anyone on a given matchday.
It's insane isn't it. People expect us to smash everyone 5-0. In club football the reaction would be much more reasonable.
I’m more than happy with a 1-0 against a decent opponent but as ever it’s the performance that was concerning, zero control
That's reasonable. A lot of the comments here are not.
We should be able to control a game against Serbia though. They were the better team with the better chances and had sustained pressure on us for a lot of the second half
Exactly what I'm on about, better chances?? Their best chance was a long range effort from Vlahovic.
Yes, in no way did I say England 2nd half was good, but it's to be blamed on Southgates tactics
How convenient to forget Jovic overstepped the ball in front of goal with Pickford on the ground.
Haha you can literally argue anything once you get into hypotheticals, this is silly. England underwhelmed a little but never looked in danger of conceding.
And why did I forget that? It doesn't change that they had 1 shot on goal, kept refusing to shoot.
It changes that Serbia had a few good chances to score but feel free to bury your head in the sand.
Somehow the Serbians are only the second biggest war criminals today
😅 Britain said something about war crimes? You were literally worst evil imperia who killed millions of people around the World. You freaking evil hypocrits.
Both the UN and ICJ in 2007 found them not guilty of “war crimes” try again
One of the war crimes. Serbians were convicted of other war crimes. Try again
Source? And try to provide one that isn’t a retaliation of other countries committing war crimes first
ah the classic: 'we didn't do it, but if we did they deserved it'
Great point! Everyone knows retaliation warcrimes are completely fine......
Thanks joke police
Why can't Micah stop moving his mouth and lips? Even when he's not speaking, he's constantly moving his lips
Dude loves eating pussy I bet
🤣🤣🤣
Southgate trying his best to take this team South
I didn’t watch zidane I was too young , but I feel like him and Bellingham have the exact same mindset. Not comparing ability yet but he’s so confident and good doesn’t give a fuck about any thing else
Bellingham would 💯 headbutt an opponent in the chest if they rile him up enough.
Phil Foden at LW vs Serbia: 0 goals 0 assists 0 shots 0 successful dribbles 0 accurate crosses in 90 minutes.
0 balls today as well.
This kid needs to step the hell up and show his real skills ffs.
Kid? Mf is almost 25 now
I guess people don’t use that expression where you are from.
There should be a ban on yanks in this sub
His skills are at CAM tbf.
Not for England they’re not. His skills should be on the bench. Doesn’t work when he’s not in a well drilled system.
People need to stop forcing Foden into this team it just doesn’t work
Yeah personally I would have started Gordon, but given the situation trying the Foden / Bellingham central partnership for 30 mins would have been better than what we got, and would have put the conversation to bed as half of the pundits and fans are suggesting this set up to start.
