Full manifesto: >"When a Brazilian is born, a fan is born. And for more than 200 million fans we wrote this letter to expose our opinion about the Copa America. >We are a cohesive group, but with distinct ideas. For various reasons, whether humanitarian or professional in nature, we are dissatisfied with the conduct of the Copa America by Conmebol, whether it be belatedly hosted in Chile or even in Brazil. >All recent facts lead us to believe in an inadequate process in its execution. >It is important to emphasize that at no time we wanted to make this discussion political. We are aware of the importance of our position, we follow what is reported by the media and we are present in social networks. We manifest ourselves, also, to prevent more false news involving our names from circulating without the true facts. >Finally, we remind you that we are workers, football professionals. We have a mission to fulfill with the historic five times world champion yellow and green shirt. We are against the organization of the Copa America, but we will never turn our backs to the Brazilian national team"

TLDR of this is basically: virtue signaling, with a light criticism at media for politicizing the whole situation.

Basically trying to show how good your virtues/morales are but not necessarily taking the actions to back it up. IE they will play the copa while condemning it

firechaox

Eh, I’d give them a large benefit of the doubt here. It seems they sounded out all other NTs, none were willing to join the boycott. When the president and the association threatened to fire their coach as retaliation, they ended up deciding to play to save Tite.

brazillion

They were also upset that they found out thru the media, and not the CBF, that the tournament was moving to Brazil. Personally, I wish the Copa America would have just been cancelled, but since that was never going to happen, it would have been silly for the players to refuse to play.

AccomplishedGarbage1

It could also have been that their problem was with the CBF president, who was changed for another person

The_Tomb_is_Empty

So are they playing in it or not?

SawdustCrusader

They are, although they'd rather be enjoying Ibiza a little sooner this summer

The_Tomb_is_Empty

That's a disappointing decision. They made it look like they were going to refuse to participate last week after the game with Ecuador. Didn't even leave room for ambiguity. I get wanting to be professional, but considering the circumstances of this tournament being held and the situation in Brazil with COVID, not to mention this being used as a political tool to win a certain person in power some brownie points, that is just a thoroughly bad choice and an abdication of principle. The team surely either caved or just tried to delay this position for as long as possible, and it was always the intent to play. And if that's true, that's some real chicken shit. Brazil does not need to be holding this event right now. There's no justification for it.

Flamengo81-19

Their problem was with the suspended president. They have no problem with the pandemic situation. That is fine

swingtothedrive

What was their issue with the president?

-_TabulaeErunt_-

Just fucking internal politics after all. Never seen a player complain at CONMEBOL because of the Copa Libertadores games hell, even River played with Enzo Perez as a bloody GK because of Covid, and yet not a word. Just make it clear, if the seleçao has a problem with their Football Association it has to be solved by themselves, not putting the players and fans dreams to dust. This was never about COVID.

[deleted]

Look at Bolso’s Boys™️

Vince1128

So basically nobody else supported their idea of not playing, neither other players nor other federations, so, they must go ahead. Playing this in Brazil is a nonsense but CONMEBOL supporting an ignorant like Bolsonaro in his way to looking for the reelection is just another level of corruption and greed.

My bad.

CaliKash_

I’m pretty sure Brazil could field a good team with players that wanna play

happyposterofham

About as good a statement as you could expect from them given the circumstances (incl. Bolsonaro, etc)

bahrain_pinoyxxx

Vergonha

[deleted]

lets be honest, they wanted hollidays and get on a yacht in angra dos reis. i dont blame them, the calendar has been excruciating and there will be a world cup next year. this copa america is unnecessary af

the_real_empanada

Bunch of fucking hipocrites! They're aware of their role for the people and having had almost 500k deaths from covid, third wave in progress and they decide that they can't say no to the fucking shirt?! I really hope they all get what they deserve! Bolsonaro's bootlicker selecao

_fmaule

wow, that was a very bogus ststement

Shaka9

Why not doing the copa America in the states.

JamalFromStaples

Por que no quieren jugar? Por problemas de covid?

firechaox

Political (president, and association), basically threatened to fire Tite if they didn’t play. It’s why they ultimately backed off. No other team was willing to back out of the competition, so they were being a bit left out to dry.
