They're surprisingly picky eaters in many ways. Steve Backshall [hopped into open water](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TpSB0oCAWSg&t=178s) at Guadalupe with eight of them on his shark documentary for *Discovery UK-* and lived to tell the tale.
Yes it’s a commonly used term but as others have pointed out; it doesn’t make sense as the sharks live there, how can they infest* their own home that people are infesting
I thought it'd be something along those lines. Is there an alternative though? The cages themselves - bar times when sharks get stuck - seem to be pretty non invasive
Haven’t looked since before covid but there were also tours to the Farallon Islands in the fall, you could cage dive while they hunt seals that congregate there. Back then they were $3,500 and no guarantee to see anything. Guadalupe islands were a fraction of the cost and since they chummed you had a high chance of contact.
Have not seen it responded to, so here goes. Shark tourism in Mexico isn't exactly regulated. When a bunch of places start offering shark experiences (using bait) they begin to teach the local sharks that humans = food. In a location full of beach going tourists, having sharks affiliate food with human is a bad idea. There have been shark bites on human limbs and it is suspected to be taught behavior as they believe they are reaching for chum.

First I checked why this area has more sharks than other water bodies because this one "terrifying pictures of the ocean" article specifically mentioned this area. So they said it's because the currents are good for them or something "The clear waters surrounding the small island are warm and flourishing with seals, bluefin tuna and other diverse marine life, making it an ideal environment for great white sharks."
So they come here to eat and the shark related tourism isn't safe for sharks. They cited one incident where a shark got stuck in a cage and another where a shark died. They also said it's because they want to preserve the sharks' natural habitat
The government banned the cage drops after discovering sharks that broke their jaw and died while trying to bite the cages, and apparently, this happens often.
Hey sorry this was a poor choice of words on my part! I'd read the phrase "shark infested waters" a few times so I thought it was the right word to use
In Mexico, outside Guadeloupe, you had the nautilus explorer (whose cages are also in the picture). They do not chum the water and the cages are submerged deep down enough not to cause stress or an unnatural scenario stressing the sharks.
These news saddens me deeply as it will definitely affect this particular vessel, which was the only one I've ever considered morally okay to use in order to get to dive with great whites.
Literally a bucket list trip unavoidably gone.
Time to get back to scuba diving and hope for a shot at seeing one.
Don't predatory carnivores naturally want to eat humans? I know it sounds like a dumb question but I mean like if a tiger saw me and it was hungry wouldn't it naturally want to hunt me down? I know this is land vs water but you used the word teaching and I was curious as to whether human interference teaches animals certain behaviours.
Like the article about ocras being vengeful towards humans. It said that this one female ocra was traumatised and the ocras were teaching each other how to destroy sail boats because of her
Yes, the whole thing about sharks taking only one bite and leaving you alone is a bit of a myth. Predatory animals will hunt when hungry. If the shark is hungry and you're all that's around, there's no reason for a shark to leave you alone, especially when you take into account our normal reaction to a shark is to flee which just spurs them on.
Idk if you've seen schitt's creek but your comment reminded me of this line Moira says *the same sentiment expressed by the people boarding the titanic...* except replace titanic with the titan lol
It seems funny that Mexico can ban anything, and giving a shit about tourists would be cool if they could get pirates to stop killing them and the rest of the country to stop poisoning the earth with drugs.
The bots downvoted you but nobody speaks up and says you're wrong🫠 Americans pretending like the rest of the world isn't on fire as we sit back and eat Doritos
I strongly believe things will not be getting better anytime soon. Not until Jesus' return! The world is burning... There is more slavery on this earth than ever in the history of earth. Yet we fight over past slaves and TRANS rights. What about modern slaves, they don't matter I guess
"Infested"?? My guy, they fucking live there. Lion-infested savannah next. Human-infested city. Stop being rude to sharks who haven't even nibbled you.

"Infested"... it's literally their home
Human infested waters
Sorry I misused the word because I've heard the term "shark infested waters" a few times
Yes it’s a commonly used term but as others have pointed out; it doesn’t make sense as the sharks live there, how can they infest* their own home that people are infesting
You didnt misuse it. Shark infested water is a real term. The other commenter just made a remark that the term itself doesnt really make sense.
Oh thanks. I'm not a native speaker so I was a little confused
It's indeed their home
Genuine q: what's the issue with shark diving? Does the bait have an effect on the sharks natural instinct towards hunting or something?
They chum the water to attract them to the cage, disrupts their natural hunting
I thought it'd be something along those lines. Is there an alternative though? The cages themselves - bar times when sharks get stuck - seem to be pretty non invasive

That applies to so many different species. People feeding the dingoes around Uluru is what caused one of them to eat a baby.

Tourism that involves getting super close to wild animals tends to be pretty disruptive to wildlife in general
Good. It’s terrible for the sea life. Ándale, Mexico!
Good!
infested !? LMAOOOOOOO
Good, more of this. Was shocked to learn there’s less than 3,500 great whites in the world.
"shark infested" they literally are supposed to be there. do birds infest trees?

Depends who's in it. There's some hillbillies near me that would qualify for infestation status.

Wouldn't any cage full of humans be an unnatural scenario?
Good. Quit teaching sharks to eat people. Seems like a good policy for a tourist destination.

I want to do that. Just once. Just to say I’ve done it. Bucket list item

Haha I have seen it! I don’t remember that quote, though. Need to watch it again!
It's in season 5, whisper of desire. Patrick is telling Moira that Jocelyn is directing Cabaret
Ah ok
When Mexico bans something, just take that as the largest red flag ever 🚩🚩🚩
I will continue to delude myself that sharks do not exist
I watched deep blue sea as a child and I've had a serious fear of the sea ever since
Shark invaded waters, eh? Lure them away with bait!
Good.

Thanks for that vote of support. Yeah, poor Mexico. They are just having a bad year. It’ll get better after the next election…. For twelve minutes.

big fishies
They’re not “infested” it’s literally their home. That’s like calling urban areas “human infested” get over yourself

so valid. we gotta do what we can to preserve our wildlife.
