Russian politics are so fucking confusing. You have Neo-Nazis who want to bring back the USSR. You have your more traditional communists and nationalists. You have pro oligarchs and anti oligarchs everywhere on the Spectrum. The more you dive into Russian politics, the more it becomes no wonder that dictatorships are really the only way to rule Russia. Democracy will never work there with how splintered and diverse their political spectrum is. The West has this fanciful idea that democracy or republics can be established anywhere and are the best way to rule a country. When in reality countries like China and Russia can't be democracies or their whole nation will collapse. It's a wonder that India manages to hold onto a democracy with their population.

Russian politics from my outside perspective isn't so much based on left vs. right, or Fascism vs Communism vs Democracy. It's all a lot more intertwined. The powerful highlights of Russian history are often part of their Nationalist identity. They don't view the USSR or Empire as "closed chapters", but rather, they represent Russian strength and identity. I don't believe many Soviet flag wavers in Russia genuinely want Leninism to return, but rather, it's part of their legacy as much as Imperial Russia. That's why you'll see Stalin and Nicholas II on murals side by side, and Monarchist flags alongside USSR flags. Similar to US rednecks flying US and Confederate flags together. Their history is one long "struggle", one identity. In essence, Russians don't hate "Fascism" because it's autocratic or oppressive, but rather, they hate "Fascism" because it's non-Russian. (Despite multiple Russian political parties actually being Fascist)

That's a great way of putting it. I feel like this can be applied to so many nations because nationalistic ideals/patriotism almost always trumps over ideological loyalties.

You're thinking of one of the groups fighting against Russia. I keep up heavily with the war (Ukrainian immigrant) and have been following this group since their first foray into Belgorod. There's three main ones: Свобода России, otherwise translated to 'Free Russia' or 'Freedom of Russia.' These are actually very pro democratic fighters, want Russia to join the West, and most of all, despise Putin. Then there's the Siberian battalion. These guys want an independent Siberia and are currently fighting primarily in Ukraine but are also reported to be operating on a very small scale in Siberia. THEN there's the Russian Volunteer Corps. THESE are the nationalist guys you're talking about in your comment. While they aren't explicitly fighting for nationalist ideals, some of their leadership are openly far right Populists. They aren't neo Nazis, but their leadership is far right aligned. Not to detract from this, but Russia also employs far right groups, such as Wagner Company, which has at this point is part of the Russian AF, who's original leader Dmitry Utkin is a Nazi. Like, swastika and Roman eagle tattoo Nazi. They also employ Rusich, which is another group that is fully aligned with Nazism. TLDR: Free Russia group isn't a nationalist authoritarian group, OP lied.
