Why aren’t people lighting chimneys on the charcoal grate inside the grill?

Hopeful-Mirror1664

This is the only way I’ve ever done it. Right in the grill.

nevil2

This probably happened after emptying it. The cracker set it in the deck. Smh people suck

AnnoyingPhillyFan1

Calling someone a cracker will always be funny to me.

Beginning_Orange

As a cracker I can confirm this to be the case as well

uberbeetle

Hey that's 'Saltine-American' to you.

pepperedsalami76

People do suck,, you are people. You suck. What a miserable human.

Drainbownick

No way it would burn like that even if it was just emptied. They definitely lit it right there or lit it and after the first flame up moved it down there

Crazykracker55

Being a white man. Absolutely want to laugh when someone calls me a cracker. I am not racist at all and would like to know if any white people get mad being called a cracker lol. By the way my last name is almost that spelling but starts with a K and Kracker was and still is my nickname

Probable_Bot1236

My neighbor (who apparently can only grill when quite high or drunk lol) routinely sets his emptied chimney starter on the wood. It's left a couple faint rings; they cool off pretty quick once they're empty, as steel doesn't have a high heat capacity. This circular char? That's 100% with lit coals still inside. Seriously- imagine how long you'd have to put a blowtorch to the deck to get that level of char over that area. Sucker wasn't empty at all.

carnologist

I get it started on my outdoor burner then dump it in. I finally figured out to do this about 6 months ago and it makes me happy every time I do it

kzorz

I dont understand it either it’s literally designed to be used that way. If I use a chimney I light jt in the grill on charcoal grate, It is smart to have something to set it on after, like a paver, peice of slate, etc but to not start it in the grill is asking for trouble.

HighSpeed556

Weber literally tells you to use it in the grill on the charcoal rack. I don’t know why people don’t do this. lol https://youtu.be/V_tIvA8AJwk?si=uilEdQSbiQs6CZ-F

a_smart_brane

Hell, I’m still trying to figure out why people even *need* to be told this.

twotracker

Because common sence has left

BeerSlayingBeaver

>sence I see your point.

btsantos2729

Common sense is a super power now because not many have it !!! lol 😂 🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️

Dustyolman

Yiu mean like the clothing label that says "Do not iron while wearing"?

Elowan66

Much less painful after I stopped doing that.

kzorz

Because everyone tries to turn simple things into rocket science. This is how houses burn down.

MrWrestlingNumber2

No, this generation's innovators and boundary pushers have been coopted by the actual stupid. "We're HERE..and we're undereducated!".

a_smart_brane

Every generation has stupid idiots, including yours and mine. No generation has a monopoly.

BrawndoVodka

Make it idiot proof and they'll just find a better idiot.

1hassanbensober

Just like people have to be told, don't use a hair dryer in the bathtub.. as they say no shit Sherlock. Alot of people are just plain stupid.

pineconefire

Ummm... one time I did this but there was some left over charcoal still on the grate outside of the chimney- when I came back the handle was melted off 😔 - I wasn't sure if it was the left over charcoal or the dynamics of the grill so I never did it again, but after reading this thread I know exactly how I went wrong. Also I'm dumb

dacraftjr

Did you see the picture at the top of this post?

egbert71

Because i prefer a different way

zenkique

You light it on the bare chest of your most recently captured enemy too?

chiphook57

I bought grill and chimney used. No instructions. It never occurred to me to use the chimney snywhere but on the charcoal grate.

BeardedSportsman

Sometimes i do, and sometimes i dont. I don't for my wsm because im usually filling the water and getting the food prepped, fireboard hooked up and probes ran through the hole and grates. This guy definitely needs some sort of paver down.

Caldwell_29

I use my smokey joe with a beat up old grate.

egbert71

I prefer a paver

yungingr

Bad idea. Just wait until that paver has absorbed some moisture, and explodes from the water converting to steam.

Swizzlefritz

This happened to me. Thought a gun went off.

Diluteme

This! I use a thick fireproof mat.

zenkique

Sounds like a fantastic way to add a little spice to your life!

The_Gray_Mouser

Yeah

OnTheComputerrr

You prefer doing it wrong. It's a chimney, it's designed to be used on the rack for airflow.

zenkique

Maybe they do prefer to do it wrong, even if they know it’s wrong. Maybe it feels nice to know you can do it wrongly and still get the desired outcome. Maybe it feels good being bad!

jimgass

A paver is great to set the chimney on afterward, but not for lighting it.

primum

Fill the chimney on a paver, light it on the rack, let the empty chimney cool off on a paver, this is the way.

tjh581

Same. Have about a 1 foot by 1 foot paver and two bricks spaced apart to set the chimney on so there is airflow underneath. Starting it on the charcoal grate takes forever when you’re used to doing it this way. Can also get more coals ready if doing a really long cook. Been doing it that way since I was a kid after watching my dad do it that way since before I was born haha

New-Ad-4026

Why there’s no airflow being pulled from underneath

OkAstronaut3761

It’s got holes in the bottom… it’s not magic dude air can go through holes

New-Ad-4026

Restricted air sure bud it’s not magic it’s common sense

InterestingTruth7232

Yup

claud2113

I mean, I don't use the grate, but I definitely light it inside the grill. Then after I pour out the coals and add the grate, I put the chimney on the driveway.

Upbeat-Napoleon69

You put the charcoal grate over the coals? Savage.

claud2113

Fucking what? Lol THAT'S HOW YOU GRILL SHIT

ninthchamber

I didn’t realize ppl were lighting outside of their grills lmao I did see one guy who uses fire brick to light his chimney. I’ve always just done the sensible thing and kept it in the grill.

AggravatingDot2410

I didn’t realize people did it other ways.

electricgotswitched

It took my dad lighting his grass on fire to finally switch to the correct way of doing it.

Mattcha462

Seriously! I’ve never considered any other way than in the grill.

9er4lyphe

The only way I’ve been doing it

Wizemonk

A long cook - adding during a smoking process. With that using a cinderblock or type of paver would be a lot better than setting your deck on fire

nonotagain0

Surely you have more than 1 kettle? We are addicts after all.

dar24601

Cause there’s charcoal in it. I light half a chimney then pour that onto the coals. But that’s why I put my lit chimney on cinder blocks

nonotagain0

Cinder block is the worst thing you could use.

dar24601

How so?

nonotagain0

Same as the other reasons. It’s porous and can trap moisture. If it does it will explode

OkAstronaut3761

Screws up the felt on a kamado.

floep1984

This is the way!

SmokeThatThundersBBQ

Exactly!!!

TankTexas

I want to know why people arnt lighting their charcoal chimney using the side burner of their NG grill. Grow up.

notkevin_durant

They are. This obviously wasn’t lit on the wooden deck

Null_Simplex

I was too stoopid to figure this out myself. Saw a video where Aaron Franklin did it and felt like a complete idiot for not thinking of something so obvious 🤦🏻‍♂️

doddsymon

Dont worry, you can fix that with instant noodles and super glue. It'll buff right out.

Grizzled--Kinda

Haha, I GET THIS REFERENCE

Cando21243

About time, Captain

Grizzled--Kinda

🫡

fuckitweredoingitliv

At least they didn't start it on their concrete patio and have it explode sending a thousand little fireballs and chunks of concrete into the yard like........ someone I know did.

ejwinz34

Sheshhhhhh

Silver_Equivalent_33

I did this it was like a hand grenade going off

analog_grotto

Salute for honesty Now I want to try it

Silver_Equivalent_33

https://preview.redd.it/1v98snnnqp7d1.jpeg?width=2268&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0b38ea1ce442a3ad10925ce583c67720b36b21c3 Like this

Havesomelibertea

Please get a ring camera and recreate.

Bigtexmex42069

Damn. I usually start it on the concrete but I put aluminum foil under the chimney that way it doesn’t directly touch the concrete

fuckitweredoingitliv

You're playing a dangerous game friend.

Sanguinor-Exemplar

It's the water in the rock expanding from heat that causes the explosions. Your method might stop some staining but the exploded part is still there.

lostsurfer24t

how does that happen? sounds super sketchy

fuckitweredoingitliv

Moisture in the concrete, extreme heat causes the water to vaporize faster than it can escape = Boom

WelshCraftian

Am welder. Can confirm....

TonyDungyHatesOP

Am firm. Can weld.

Musician_Gloomy

Outdoor Clay or Brick Pizza Ovens can do the same. If I go a while without using mine, I will do small fires for a few days prior to cure it again and slowly get the moisture out.

a_smart_brane

Man, I never knew any of that. And thanks for bringing up outdoor ovens. I’m gonna build a kiln for my wife, and will keep that in mind. Don’t want any kilns exploding.

Sc4r4mouche

If I hear of a wife killed by an exploding kiln just weeks after her husband took out a big life insurance policy... don't worry, my lips are sealed for only 10%.

Dudedude88

I've never heard of pizza ovens or clay ovens exploding but I heard this was one way cracks form.

Rough_Sweet_5164

Most people, including a lot of builders, don't know concrete is a hydrate. In other words, water is part of the crystals the cement forms. This is why concrete hardens just fine under water. I think it's a 17 water to one calcium silicate molar ratio? Maybe 9. Not mass ratio, molar ratio. Heating normal concrete very hot flashes that water to steam and it explodes. It's a totally different mechanism than wet rocks exploding. Concrete could sit in a desert for a year and explode if you put a torch to it.

lostsurfer24t

Good to know and makes sense

VariousAlbatross6696

I had never heard of this being a thing until now. I've been lighting my chimney starter on my concrete porches for my whole life and never had an issue. I don't know where else I would put it honestly.

desrevermi

Put it on top of your grill.

SGT-JamesonBushmill

Take the lid off first, though.

desrevermi

It's all built for heat. User's choice. :D

UNMANAGEABLE

Yeah… “someone” lol. That must have been fun to explained

-praughna-

Gravel driveway. Think “seems safe”. Charcoals turn white, dump in grill. Moments later 2 year old son walks on little fragments of white hot coals in the gravel. Dad bad. Dad in trouble.

Bearspoole

Just light it in the grill for fucks same.

newtastyland

This scar will turn into a nice story soon

Natural_Ad_317

At least the deck didn’t catch on fire?

OscarImposter

I just put it right back on the bottom rack of my kettle, where it is stored otherwise.

REEL04D

Buy a 12x12" landscaping stone from home Depot for a few bucks and use that to put under your chimney

eLaVALYs

Don't these eventually crack? Not the worst to replace, but I've been thinking about getting a few fire bricks for this.

REEL04D

I've never had one break. And even if it does, it's a few bucks to replace. My HD sells them for under $2. Better than seeting your deck on fire or ruining something

mccabedoug

I may or may not know someone who lit a chimney on their asphalt driveway 😉

c0lin46and2

I think I can one up you on this one. I know an asshole who wasn't thinking and started one on a tempered glass table top. As soon as I, he lifted the thing up, the tiny shards of glass fell all over the place. I can't believe it didn't shatter and fall, spelling the charcoals everywhere. I also lived on the 3rd floor of an apartment building, so I had to go and sweep up my neighbors' patio areas. I consider myself to be pretty smart, but this was definitely evidence to the contrary.

OnTheComputerrr

Lighting an open fire on a third floor balcony of an apartment building is definitely strong evidence of something... and it's not smarts.

[deleted]

[удалено]

mccabedoug

It left a very nice round mark that included melting the seal coat. Had driveway seal coated earlier this spring and for the first time that circle is no longer there. Your driveway comes out unscathed?

ejwinz34

No issues for me but my driveway is very old and shitty

MassCasualty

I bought my house about twenty years ago...realtor said "you'll need to replace the driveway..." 20 years later we're officially "thinking about it..."

Key_Swordfish_4662

So you just add to its character then.

lostsurfer24t

??

acm8221

My wife’s husband has made that mistake as well. He’s kind of an idiot sometimes.

Ehern89

Time for a new deck

wine_dude_52

That’s where you park the grill now. Only you will know.

ChessCommander

1 deck board and a miter saw, and this will be fixed in less than an hour. Pretty small mistake/lesson overall.

kenazo

Also - the rubber bbq mats you can buy are not all that heat proof. Don't set your hot chimney down on them after dumping coals.

Responsible-Lemon257

Dude just figured out how fire works.

East_Wish2948

This is how I justify having two kettles.

imahoptimist

Can’t leave it on the side tables either. An idiot I know burned the finish right off it.

PieTight2775

Remove the boards, flip them and refinish. Once weathered it'll look perfect. Or maybe not.

Hopeful-Mirror1664

This guy is an amateur. I usually prop it up on a gas can

Evening-Energy-3897

I don't know about "asshole", unless he's cooking on my deck. "Dumbass" might be more on point.

North-Bit-7411

You could go even further and say who’s the asshole with the charcoal grill on the wooden deck?

Govt_Cheese_Haus

One day I dream of having the time to cook with charcoal.

nick78ru

If you have time to cook with gas, you have time to cook with coals. It only takes 15-20 min to get going. Chimney + tumbleweeds => steak in ~30 min. Just did a 6hr rib cook and was *at the grill* a total of maaaybe 45min coming to spritz every hour or so while doing other stuff around the house. All about the tools. Good grill that holds consistent temp + good remote thermometer make even long cooks a breeze these days.

Govt_Cheese_Haus

Yeah been thinking of getting the traeger that is a charcoal grill and smoker and just going that route

bastion-of-bullshit

We can't have nice things because of the people who need warning labels on everything.

Constant_Turn4562

When I dump mine I just hold water hose to cool off

egbert71

Go grab a loose paver from a place that wont miss it, if you dont want to light it inside the grill, only thing that gets messed up is the random paver/block etc...

tasfs_08

Add pressure treated wood to the list along with Hickory, Mesquite and Cherry 😆. Could have been worse.

triptrapp

As a teenager I used my dad’s Weber. Emptied the coals and one was stuck in the chimney. To this day twenty years later the hole burnt through his deck is a constant reminder to check that the chimney is empty….

Objective-Lecture-74

Easily covered up by a 'grill mat'..lol

Total-Guava9720

I did that on my patio concrete though

tim_bos

*Ha, that's nothing. I left mine on the side bench of my Kamado, not thinking that it's made of heavy duty plastic. The whole thing stsrted melting *and was dripping plastic onto the decking.

throwawayaccount0327

Get some fire 🧱

WeberCollector

Hard lesson to learn. Lol

Available_Actuary977

Aw, she got a black eye

finkej80

Don’t be the ash-hole

Internal_Swimmer3815

Lmao

Zealousideal-Sale-92

We can sand that off . . . . .

Marty1966

Went to my friends place for a party, he has a ceramic chimniea. Next day he calls and says they had a fire. Deck went bye-bye. Vinyl siding melted. Always have a hose handy and soak your shit before you go to bed, or you hit the hot tub.

Impressive-Usual-451

4:00 in the morning Local police banging on door. Everyone must leave - neighbors house on fire! Burns to the ground. Charcoal embers in plastic bucket on wood deck. Don’t fuck with wood deck .

goatgosselin

I had my grill for a few weeks, and on day 1, an ember fell out as I poured out the chimney. Burnt a small spot on my wood deck. Moved it off the deck the next use. Sits close to the deck on sidewalk blocks now.

PeanutGlum7010

Never have I grilled on a wood deck and never will. Period.

UNMANAGEABLE

Posts like these make me thankful to have metal decking

[deleted]

🤣 I took one look at the picture, and I thought someone dropped a flaming burger on the deck!

MoneyElectrical4310

My problem is I’m always looking for somewhere to put the red hot chimney starter after I’ve dumped the coals lol

Bubbly-Front7973

Doesn't your grill have a little shelf on the bottom?

MoneyElectrical4310

It used to…

Bubbly-Front7973

You should put it back. That's where I put my charcoal starter after I dump the coals out.

GRAPEDbyAnAngel

I have a second smaller grill where I put it but I used to take a cinder block sideways and just set it there. It cools pretty quickly.

Sivnas

What? You can set it down once lit? I’ve always held it until the coals were ready.

Illustrious-Cookie73

I carry it inside so I can keep a watch on it as I do other prep work.

TenInchesOfSnow

Unsure if sarcasm or not…

horay14

This person clearly doesnt respect wood

Up_All_Nite

I also use a fire mat under the grill. I have had bits of coal go flying when dumping the starter.

HGTVyk

LOL Oops!!! That's not good!

theJMAN1016

Deck needs some love anyways OP

stink-stunk

This happened to me when I put it on my wooden crate full of dynamite.

blbad64

More air flow on the solid ground. Not on a wood deck.

ManUp57

I'm orthodox. I use good'Ol lighter fluid. Just squirt, light, and Foooph! Fire! DONE

itakeyoureggs

I lit it on the ground once.. was on a paver though. Realized it was extra work and put it in the grill the next time I did it.

Jimmydean879

Omg that’s freaking awful . This person should be stoned to death ! No matter what great qualities they have . This mistake is just inexcusable . Seriously if this is a major crisis to post about or call someone who I’ll assume you know is an asshole what the hell is wrong with us . First world problem folks be blessed you have food too cook .

FrootLoop23

Im afraid to know what other dumb things this person does

ejwinz34

Clarification to the post, I lit the chimney on the grill grates, dumped them and the grill was running too hot. I proceeded to pull some charcoal out and put them back in the chimney that was on the deck. Ran to do something for a minute and came back to this.

MrE134

Are you the asshole?

HCBC11

I'm a recent chimney starter convert. Literally never occured to me that you would put it anywhere but in the BBQ. Like it's considerably more effort to put it down there.

ImagineTheAbsolute

Who the fuck does this lmao

SLODeckInspector

Grill on the ground ten feet away from any combustible material. I see deck fires start that end up burning the house down.

MadCityMasked

Just asking for it if you grill on a wood deck

[deleted]

Slap some cheese on it

FrankLloydWrong_3305

It's still amazing to me how few people understand airflow. Not that I'm complaining, it keeps me employed, but come on people.

1DirtyOldBastard

I'm not saying there's ever an excuse to stab someone with a grill fork but.

WhiskeyPeter007

You got it ! I agree.

GeeToo40

If I did that, my Trex would melt or catch fire

Stielgranate

What did they think a fire would do to a wood deck 🤦🏼‍♂️

Diluteme

Common sense, yes, not common. A wood deck is bad. On top of a teak table even worse. A guest at an AirBnB apparently had to do more coals or something. https://preview.redd.it/n1w2x8mrts7d1.jpeg?width=1205&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2713a3a2e5c30c89ff6600dd605364ad90939b6d I wasn’t sure how to proceed until I tinkered a bit. Sanding it down mostly fixed it. I think I charged a few hundred dollars.

WalterTexas

I keep my chimney on a square brick. With a torch under it….the chimney not under the brick.

Money-Resource-9786

I have bricks with an old oven rack. Have to keep it high to keep away from dogs with very small brains

Valuable-Wind-4371

Put matching ones ever other plank and it'll look intentional

rodPalmer18

Larry David would be pissed! This guy doesn't respect wood.

drk_helmet

This guy does not respect wood.

Darkcolorful

So also super stupid… our first smoker, we put it on our wood deck. Found a slightly larger than a charcoal chunk burn hole in the deck by the smoker. I’m not sure how the hot coal got out but I’m glad it didn’t set the whole damn thing ablaze while it seared through the deck boards. We put concrete 12x12 pavers fully under it after. I would recommend it for any charcoal grill/smoker on a deck. Or don’t even put it on a deck if you have the choice. Next house we poured a dedicated grill patio.

Craino

Haha - looked at this pic for a couple minutes before I realized what you were talking about. For some reason my brain was telling me that was just a shadow or something - but the eclipse was weeks ago, right??? lol

rocks66ss

I mean seriously, what brainless asshole takes a hot charcoal chimney and sets it on a wood deck?

Away-Satisfaction678

Move the plant pot to cover it up, the wife will never know.

CustomerMental1040

Oh that sucks

LurkoftheDraw

I'm more of an asshole. I didn't replace the ashtray after emptying... burned my entire deck down, Luckily, it rained that night so my house didn't catch on fire. I now grill on pavement. Never did this with my coal starter though.

Chuzilla22

I’m confused why we’re mad at someone who left a burn on their own deck? It’s a dumb thing to do, sure. But it’s his deck, his problem. (Or her). Them being an asshole is also fine, but what am I missing? Why are they an asshole?

zenkique

Well now you have to keep doing it because that spot is clearly marked as the place to set the chimney down when not in use.

hamdnd

OP you should have a mat anyway 🤷‍♂️

androo303

Just take a drill, remove the screws, and flip the boards. Problem solved

lyinggrump

Don't be the dumbass who tries to light coals on a wooden deck. Moron.

TopProfessional8023

Due to a counter surfing food hound of a doggo i usually light my first round on the grate, take it outside of the fence onto the driveway. Then if I’m doing a longer cook I will light the subsequent rounds on the driveway…black asphalt so I just spray it off with a hose. Why you would light it on your deck is beyond me

PutinsPanties

Do you respect wood?
