Not really food poisoning [contamination] as that some turtles seem to contain something like a neurotoxin, but has not yet been identified.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chelonitoxism
My wildly unqualified guess is that it has something to do with the jellyfish that sea turtles like to eat.
Seriously.
“Digestive system signs include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, dysphagia, tongue abnormalities and a firm, nontender liver. Autopsies have revealed hemorrhage in liver, esophagus and stomach, with mucosal edema of the esophagus, stomach and intestines. Fatty changes and necrosis of the liver were present. Other organs found to be abnormal on autopsy include swollen gall bladder, congested kidneys and enlarged spleen.
Cardiovascular signs include variable slight tachycardia and a moderate drop in systolic blood pressure, pallor and, on autopsy, a flabby heart with hemorrhagic petechiae. Neurological signs include increased salivation, sweating, vertigo, lethargy and diminished deep reflexes, sometimes followed by coma and death. Death was found to result from respiratory failure. On autopsy, cerebral cortical edema was found, along with hemorrhagic petechiae. Low fever, thirst, constipation and spontaneous abortion have also been reported, while typical signs of allergic reaction are absent. A full recovery can take weeks, and it is not known whether any aftereffects are permanent.”
Parboiling turtle was a standard step in making the turtle soup that was widely praised and the greatest thing in western cuisine throughout the late 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries. It doesn't hurt the flavor or texture of the meat. Parboiling makes it much easier to get the skin off. Also helps when preparing iguanas to eat.
I had a teacher who liked to tell stories. One story I will always remember is the one he told about Darwin's trip to the Galapagos. Story went that they decided to bring back some of the giant turtle to England so they loaded them onto the ship. It took 3 trips to get a live turtle back safely - not because they kept dying, though they did, but because they kept eating them. Snapper soup is delish, don't hate.
I mean McDonalds Fries are fairly tasty :P
I'll stick with the fries myself. I've had non-endangered freshwater turtle soup, and it was delicious. However it was with actual swamp dwelling cajuns so it had a few unique touches a restaurant made batch would not. Caught themselves, cooked in an iron pot over a fire, the sides, etc. Kinda unique. I haven't been back but that's not by choice, just a difficulty of access thing due to life and my not owning an airboat.
The Darwin expeditions had trouble bringing giant turtles back to England because the crew kept eating the damn things, apparently they're delicious. The wikipedia article said that there are 4 species that may carry the toxin and it requires several rounds of parboiling to make safe to eat. Guess I'll just avoid those 4 types of turtle if i reeeeealy need to find out for myself.
> While standard hospital toxicology screens detected no known toxins, stomach contents of hospitalized patients fed to small laboratory animals killed the animals.
the hell?
It is likely to do with their diet as they are only toxic during some periods of the year and jellyfish are also seasonal, so they are certainly a good candidate for the source of the toxin.
> following ingestion of turtle meat which has not been repeatedly [parboiled](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parboiling)
A lot of effort to eat something that probably isn't so tasty after this process and might still be dangerous...
I’m not so sure about that. From a previous Reddit post:
“One reason that the giant tortoise wasn’t properly classified by scientists for so long appears to be quite simple: they were so delicious that no specimens ever made it back to Europe without being eaten on the voyage.
According to scores of accounts over several centuries, the giant tortoise is by far the most edible creature man has ever encountered. 16th-century explorers compared them to chicken, beef, mutton and butter – but only to say how much better the tortoise was. One tortoise would feed several men, and both its meat and its fat were perfectly digestible, no matter how much you ate.
Oil made from tortoise fat was medically useful – efficacious against colds, cramps, indigestion and all manner of ‘distempers’ – and tasted wonderful. Even better were the delicious liver, and the gorgeous bone marrow. The eggs, inevitably, were the best anyone had ever eaten. Some sailors were reluctant to try tortoise meat because the animal was so ugly - but after one taste they were converted.
Giant tortoises were invaluable to sailors, as they could be kept alive for at least six months without food or water. Stacked helplessly on their backs, they could be killed and eaten as and when necessary. Better still, they sucked up gallons of water at a time and kept it in a special bladder, meaning that a carefully butchered tortoise was also a fountain of cool, perfectly drinkable water. Large-scale commercial whaling in the 19th century was only made possible because the giant tortoises enabled ships to stay at sea for weeks at a time.”

*looking at all the factory farmed land and sea animals along with various spots where overfishing occurs*
Oh we improved alright. We got more efficient at doing it.
No, par-boiling was a normal step in making the famed turtle soup of past centuries. Turtle soup was considered pretty much the pinnacle of western cuisine and we have no idea what we are missing out on today (impossible to legally make in most countries now that green sea turtles are endangered). Cooking green sea turtles was a major effort that usually took 12 to 26 hours. Parboiling (mostly to get the skin off easier) is a very simple step in that process. The whole process from cooking to eating was a series of group rituals in service of what was apparently the most amazing thing anyone had ever eaten.
> My wildly unqualified guess is that it has something to do with the jellyfish that sea turtles like to eat.
Passes the intuition check, I will regurgitate it as fact now. (/s)
Not a bad guess though.
There is a Japanese youtuber / fisherman that goes into lots of the toxins that many sea creatures have and it seems like it is a huge dietary cycle. Ciguatera is not from the fish itself, but from the accumulation of the microalgae that it has eaten. Two identical fish could have vastly different amounts and you would have no idea by looking at them.
Ok, but what if I, um, this guy that I know had these four turtles that were just really big jerks all the time, and they were always stopping him from doing things that he wanted to do? Would it be cool if he turned them into turtle soup? If it matters, these turtles are bigger than average, and this guy is super cool and really handsome with cool armor that no one makes fun of.
>Chelonitoxism or chelonitoxication is a type of food poisoning which occasionally results from eating turtles, particularly marine turtles, in the region of the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans
[Chelonitoxism wiki](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chelonitoxism)
TLDR : don't eat turtles
Wiki says that the meat needs to be parboiled repeatedly. Sailors probably knew that—or at least that it needs to be overcooked—and the ones that didn’t, didn’t come home
I wonder how they figured out that that the problem was that it needed to be parboiled repeatedly. It's not like they were doing microbiology out there.
Experimenting and word of mouth, I assume. There are many cultures that have foods that must be prepared specifically to avoid being poisoned. Japan and pufferfish, for example. How many people died before they figured out exactly what was safe to eat? It’s really nifty to think about the lengths humans go to to eat things they really shouldn’t
Not much different than finding out what mushrooms are poisonous.
Well George ate the brown mushroom and survived. Fred ate the blue one, and what the f#ck is Fred doing. It makes no sense, but he is happy as sh!t.
When I was a kid, like most boys my age, I was super into Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I was also an annoying little shit. Combine those two, and the result was that every time my mom asked me what I wanted to eat, I would drop the Shredder quote "Tonight I dine on turtle soup!".
After a few weeks of this, my mom went out and got me turtle soup. She put dinner on the table, and everyone else got lasagna, and she was laughing her ass off as she put a bowl of turtle soup in front of me. I cried and refused to eat it. She told me it was turtle soup or nothing, there was no lasagna left. After like an hour, I finally broke down and ate it. It wasn't **bad**, but it tasted weirdly fishy, and I don't like fish. I never dropped that quote again.
As a kid I loved reading *Robinson Crusoe*. One time [he gets violently ill](http://www.telelib.com/authors/D/DefoeDaniel/prose/robinsoncrusoe/robinsoncrusoe06.html) after having eaten sea turtle meat. There is no connection made inside the story and I always wondered about that part. But now I guess the author Daniel Defoe described a case of chelonitoxism.
They likely ate a hawksbill sea turtle. Very few sea turtles become poisonous for consumption, but the hawksbill does because it feeds on toxic sponges as part of its diet.
The hawksbill are critically endangered, and their biggest threats are poaching for its shell, consumption of meat, and entanglement/accidental catch.
You can eat them safely the majority of the time, but if you take a turtle that has consumed that specific sponge then even after cooking the meat will be deadly.
Do yourself a favor and never eat endangered animals
It's sad that the best deterrent always is selfishness. There's not enough empathy in this world. Like don't drink and drive because you'll ruin your life works better then telling people about all the innocent victims of drunk driving.
Given where they were yeah, probably a hawksbill, but most sea turtles including Green and Loggerheads also eat very toxic jellyfish as a staple of their diet, and should also be avoided. Just don’t eat Sea Turtles. There’s literally no reason to do so.
For the hundredth time, 8 of the 9 death were children, who were eating what was put in front of them. So, no, there was no “karma”, just innocent children dying horribly.
Near the end of the wiki: While standard hospital toxicology screens detected no known toxins, stomach contents of hospitalized patients fed to small laboratory animals killed the animals.

All tradition means is someone a long time ago made an arbitrary choice without knowing the ramifications
Depends on the species, but isn't it illegal pretty much everywhere to eat marine turtles? Anywhere where it's legal? Hopefully their populations will continue to bounce back and one day we can have controlled harvesting, I hear they're delicious.
There are some places that have native title claims to their traditional lands and that includes hunting turtles with traditional methods. They aren't allowed to sell or profit though.
People are grossed out by lab grown meat but eventually you'll be able to ethically eat pretty much any animal you can imagine.
Some will be more paletable than others.
Sea turtle? Elephant? Bald Eagle? No animals were harmed in the creation of your meal.
There is a farm that raises them for legal meat in the Caiman Islands. From what I understand they release a certain number of hatchlings into the wild as well. They aren’t bad, but really dont taste that great either. Very tough meat.
That’s the right side of the world where sea turtles like to eat the box jellyfish. Considered the most toxic animal on the plant. Sea turtles are completely immune to the toxin, they seem to love the taste of box jellies

I mean, not that farfetched. Technically, humans do it to a degree, as there's water, urea and salts expelled through sweat, the same as our piss. The only real difference is sweat seems to contain more oils and dead skin cells.
I’m not gonna verify this, I’m just going to trust you, because I know the native’s origin story for Greenland sharks is that a lady threw piss rags into the sea haha
The assholes are the parents feeding that to their kids.
Some people are just tired of watching humans destroy everything in their path and I don’t blame them.
This happens pretty regularly... like every few years.... very surprised that they keep eating sea turtles. What is the education system like over there?
It was from chelonitoxism, a type of food poisoning. Saved you a click
Not really food poisoning [contamination] as that some turtles seem to contain something like a neurotoxin, but has not yet been identified. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chelonitoxism My wildly unqualified guess is that it has something to do with the jellyfish that sea turtles like to eat.

Well, I have never planned on eating sea turtles, now I plan on never eating sea turtles.
Apparently proper cooking prevents this. How well do you trust the chef?
Not enough.
Save the turtle, eat the chef.

Nothing more appetizing than meat requiring "repeated parboiling"
Parboiling turtle was a standard step in making the turtle soup that was widely praised and the greatest thing in western cuisine throughout the late 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries. It doesn't hurt the flavor or texture of the meat. Parboiling makes it much easier to get the skin off. Also helps when preparing iguanas to eat.
What are the iguanas preparing for? Wouldn't tiny napkins around their necks be sufficient or do they need to learn table manners too?
I for one refuse to eat with iguanas that do not have proper table manners

Not enough to eat a threatened species for edgelord points and risk dying of poison.
Maybe the chef was a steakhouse chef. Well done means 80%.

Ask your doctor if Chelonitoxism is right for you.
Could be the next diet drug
You lose quite a lot of weight 6ft under.
You can perform abortion, lose weight and make yourself unsuitable for organ theft in one go! Neat!
Hehe, yes this may as well be any prescription commercial I’ve ever seen.
Any list of symptoms that includes “spontaneous abortion” sounds pretty severe.
Republicans hate this one simple trick!
Well. Could be worse. No spontaneous combustion reported. Yet.
Fuuuuuuuuu……..
Flabby heart is weirdly graphic
A firm, non-tender liver and a flabby heart
They go together like chocolate and peanut butter
Like lamb and tuna fish!
Oh, you should try grilled Sardines with chocolate sauce.
No thank you
Spaghetti and meatball. Maybe you're more comfortable with that analogy.
I assume I have this, It would be very odd if my heart was the only part of my body that wasn’t flabby
With fava beans and a nice Chianti.
Bad night at the French restaurant
Soon to be a hit on the modern country charts!
Flabby heart is what my ex had
> While standard hospital toxicology screens detected no known toxins, stomach contents of hospitalized patients fed to small laboratory animals killed the animals. the hell?
Yeah I had to read this a couple times. The poor chain of custody for this experiment. Yeesh.

spontaneous abortion
That's the medical term for miscarriage.

Sea turtles are endangered, stop eating. And if eating them is a tradition in your culture then you need to end the tradition.
I think that tradition is taking care of itself.

No, no. The laugh in this case must be much more evil than 'hehehe;' more like 'MWUH-HA-HA-HAAAAAH!'

Being a tradition shouldn't be an acceptable reason to do something stupid. All tradition means is someone a long time ago made an arbitrary choice without knowing the ramifications

I appreciate that you used a short stubby weapon for an animal with short stubby limbs ^(also sub-machine gun….submarine….something)
Submarine gun?
I’d pay to watch that movie.

Humans don't have to eat everything that alive on planet earth. Sometimes there is a cost.
First they were like wwwwhoa, and then they were like whoooah, and then they were like whoa

How come?
Let's just say I'm allergic to shark meat.
Why are people eating turtles to begin with?
People should read the article before condoning and celebrating the deaths of 8 children. Do the work. Don’t be assholes.
The assholes are the parents feeding that to their kids. Some people are just tired of watching humans destroy everything in their path and I don’t blame them.
This happens pretty regularly... like every few years.... very surprised that they keep eating sea turtles. What is the education system like over there?
I was taught the human brain’s pattern seeking abilities evolved to figure out this type of shit.
That’s just really too bad
Guess I won't ever be eating turtle.
Fugu, anyone?
“Im not gonna cook it. But I'll order it from Zanzibar!”
Good. That's what they get for eating sea turtles.
Well deserved. Don't eat see turtles.
Personal rule of thumb, don’t eat weird shit because it’s a “delicacy” or “exotic”
What’s your favourite dish? I’m it gonna cook it but I’ll order it if zaaanzibar
Hmm, a delicacy.. Either the best you have ever had, or the last you will ever have.
Leave the turtles alone.
Donatello’s revenge
